Ministry Of Truth: Japan’s Communications Ministry Proposes Disinformation Law

Only recently, the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS), an influential Washington think tank, outlined how the US and Japan could bolster their cooperation in “combating misinformation.”

In areport, CSIS noted almost in passing that Japan has in general fallen behind in this activity, but also that the group’s representatives had meetings with officials in Tokyo.

Coincidentally or not, news out of Japan this week says that the country’s Internal Affairs and Communications Ministry is looking at introducing new “anti-disinformation measures.” And, a draft report notes that here, “efforts are not sufficient” while transparency and accountability (ostensibly on the part of internet companies) have not been “adequate.”

That would suggest yet another “Ministry of Truth” and “disinformation law” are in the making somewhere in the world, these taking shape as a draft report details possible measures that social media companies would have to adhere to, going forward.

Thereport, which notably comes from the Interior Ministry (also in charge of Communications), speaks about the necessity of companies behind social platforms setting up “counter-disinformation systems” themselves, that would deal with what is deemed to be “disinformation” by deleting this content, but also, stepping up “screening of advertisers.”

UK Reverses Suspension of UNRWA Funds

Many western countries cut funding to the UN agency for Palestinian refugees after Israel falsely accused some its employees of links to Hamas and the 7 October attacks

Britain’s new Labour government says it will resume funding the UN Palestinian refugee agency UNRWA, the Times of Israel reported on 19 July.

New British Foreign Minister David Lammy told parliament, “I can confirm to the house that we are overturning the suspension of UNRWA funding, Britain will provide 21 million [pounds] in funds” to the agency.

Lammy added he was reassured that the agency had taken steps to “ensure it meets the highest standards of neutrality.”

In January, Britain was one of multiple countries to halt their funding to UNRWA, the largest provider of humanitarian aid to Palestinians suffering from shortages of food, water, and medical supplies due to Israel’s brutal blockade and siege on Gaza.

Led by the US, western countries cut aid to UNRWA following accusations by Israel that some of the agency’s staff were involved in the Hamas attack on Israeli military bases and settlements on 7 October.

Israel never provided any evidence to back up its claims and has long sought to dismantle the UN agency, which upholds the right of return of Palestinian refugees to their homes in Israel.

An unpublished February report from UNRWA said some of its employees released from Israeli detention were tortured into falsely stating that the agency has Hamas links and that staff took part in the attack, Reuters reported.

“Agency staff members have been subject to threats and coercion by the Israeli authorities while in detention and pressured to make false statements against the Agency, including that the Agency has affiliations with Hamas and that UNRWA staff members took part in the 7 October 2023 atrocities,” the report says.

Speaker Johnson: Supporting Israel Is One Of America’s ‘founding Principles’

Johnson also threatened to arrest Democrats who protest Netanyahu's address to Congress if they 'get out of hand'

House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) described US support for Israel as one of America’s “founding principles” during a speech at an event hosted by the Republican Jewish Committee on July 18.

“It is an important principle that America and Israel stand together resolutely. That is part of who we are as a country. It’s one of our founding principles. I believe that we maintain peace through strength, and I think that the relationship with Israel is essential to who we are as Americans,” Johnson said.

Since the modern state of Israel was created in 1948, it’s unclear what Johnson meant when he said the US-Israel relationship is a “founding principle.” The most well-known Founding Fathers would also disagree with Johnson since they strongly warned against permanent alliances and “attachments” to other nations.

In his farewell address in 1796, George Washington said, “A passionate attachment of one nation for another produces a variety of evils. Sympathy for the favorite nation, facilitating the illusion of an imaginary common interest in cases where no real common interest exists and infusing into one the enmities of the other, betrays the former into a participation in the quarrels and wars of the latter, without adequate inducement or justification.”

Johnson also threatened Democratic lawmakers with possible arrest if they protest Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s address to Congress, which is scheduled for this Thursday.

“There’s a number of Democrats in the House who have said they are going to boycott the event, and then some others are gonna protest,” he said. “We’re gonna have extra sergeants at arms on the floor, and if anybody gets out of hand the Speaker of the House will bang the gavel. We’re gonna arrest people if we have to do it. We’re gonna get the message out.”

Rumble CEO Discusses Ad Center As Free Speech Solution To Pro-Censorship Ad Cartels

Rumble’s new advertising platform, Rumble Advertising Center , was launched as an alternative to those creators and businesses targeted by blacklisting, alarmingly frequently for political reasons.

The most egregious example is the most powerful of the groups accused of such practices: the World Economic Forum-affiliated Global Alliance for Responsible Media (GARM) .

While GARM maintains that its sole purpose is to provide “brand safety,” critics see it as a censorship tool, particularly undermining voices, allegedly going as far as to organize boycotts aimed against entire platforms (and the US House Judiciary Committee is investigating these claims ).

Rumble’s reaction to this situation is to provide an alternative, with CEO Chris Pavlovski explaining in an interview with Breitbart at the Republican National Convention (RNC) that he views GARM as an “advertising cartel” and that he has been aware that his platform would struggle where advertising is concerned because of its focus on free speech.

Jordan’s Quagmire: NATO Sets up Shop in Amman

The Atlanticists have arrived in Amman to sharpen western influence in West Asia, raising the specter of a potential ‘Arab–Israeli NATO’ and efforts to counter the region’s Resistance Axis.

The timing of NATO’s decision to establish a liaison office in Jordan earlier this month is far from coincidental, given the extraordinary turbulence rolling through West Asia.

This move aligns with the western military organization’s recent aggressive interventions in Libya and Ukraine, alongside ongoing involvement in Syria, Yemen, Afghanistan, Sudan, and the former Yugoslavia.

NATO’s actions illustrate a consistent pattern of interventionist policies by its member states, often flouting international law and exacerbating regional instability.

NATO’s strategic positioning in West Asia

NATO is now positioned in the heart of West Asia, specifically in Jordan, amidst the turbulence in Iraq, Syria, and occupied Palestine. Despite the robust presence of the US and western military and intelligence in the Hashemite Kingdom over the years, establishing a NATO office today suggests an urgent strategic necessity.

Many observers see this as either a preparation for a major war or a perception exercise aimed at deterrence, particularly in light of Iran’s Operation True Promise against the occupation state in April. However, It is worth noting that the Jordanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced the decision to open the NATO liaison office in July 2023, several months before the Palestinian resistance’s Operation Al-Aqsa Flood on 7 October 2023.

But informed observers, including Jordanian analysts, could not separate NATO’s infiltration into the region from the unprecedented regional clash...

A Precursor to Regional Turmoil

Establishing the NATO office in Jordan – a first in the region – could be seen as the initial step toward deeper involvement in West Asian conflicts. As Jordanian strategic expert Munther al-Hawarat tells The Cradle:

Jordan wants to strengthen a diplomatic partnership in anticipation of developments in the region and also aspires to support NATO in many logistical operations, but why at this time? I believe that there is a possibility of dangerous developments and fears of a major regional war if a confrontation occurs between the occupation state and Hezbollah...

Hawarat adds that, given the possibility of further Iranian intervention in this conflict, “Jordan is a target area for future military operations if they occur, and therefore, NATO wants to establish some form of deterrence.”

But the scene is broader than just Jordan. Hawarat explains:

The major, clear, and broad message that NATO wants to send is that we are here, and in any major conflict in the region, NATO as an alliance will be a part of it and will not abandon the region to any party, whether it is Iran, Russia, or even China. However, the alliance is still interested in the Middle East region and still sees it as a hotbed of regional conflicts that may lead to an international conflict. If things go towards a military confrontation, NATO will be active in this conflict, and therefore, it will stand in the face of any military challenge practiced by any regional party.

With the exception of Israel, of course.

Digital Rights Groups Rally Against UN Convention That Threatens Free Speech and Privacy

The Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF), a digital rights group, joined by nearly two dozen other similar civil organizations, has appealed to the EU Commission (EC) regarding the developments around the UN’s Cybercrime Convention.

The reason for turning to the EU mere days ahead of the finalization of the controversial text, criticized as a threat to free speech and privacy, is the bloc’s own data protection framework (concerning personal data transfers).

In the letter, the signatories state that with the final negotiations looming (the UN Ad Hoc Committee on Cybercrime (AHC) session is scheduled for July 29-August 9), the EU Commission and delegates from EU’s member countries should urgently “push back on the draft convention’s (treaty’s) many flaws.”

We obtained a copy of the letter for you here.

Among those flaws, the letter mentions an excessively broad scope that is not accompanied by proper human rights and data protection provisions. If left as is, the treaty will give “intrusive surveillance powers” to those who implement the document.

Russia, Iran Kick Off Joint Naval Exercise In Caspian Sea

Iran and Russia have expanded their military cooperation in recent years

The Iranian and Russian navies began joint maritime security exercises in Iran’s territorial waters in the Caspian Sea on 22 July, TASS news agency reported.

“The maneuvers will involve both naval ships and naval aircraft, including the guided-missile destroyers Darafsh, Separ, and Paykan, two AB-212 helicopters, the ship Shahid Basir from the Navy of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps [IRGC, Iran’s elite armed forces],” the Iranian spokesman for the drills, Captain 1st Rank Abbas Hassani, stated.

“The Russian ship SB-45 has recently entered Iran’s territorial waters and will take part [in the drills],” Tasnim News Agency quoted the spokesman as saying.

Representatives of the navies of states bordering the Caspian Sea are present at the naval drills as observers, the spokesman said.

The Israeli bombing of Hodeidah killed at least six people

On Sunday, Houthi leader Abdul-Malik al-Houthi said Yemenis were “pleased to be in a direct confrontation” with Israel and vowed to hit back hard at the Israeli bombing of Yemen’s Red Sea port of Hodeidah.

“Yemeni people are pleased to be in direct confrontation with the Israeli enemy, and they are steadfast and brave people,” al-Houthi said, according to Iran’s Press TV .

Al-Houthi said that Israel’s attack “was aimed at Yemen’s economy” since the port of Hodeidah is a vital entry point for fuel and humanitarian aid. Since 2015, Yemen has been under a US-backed Saudi blockade, which has been eased but not fully lifted.

In Cyprus, a proposal to criminalize the dissemination of “misinformation” and “offensive” comments, with penalties reaching up to five years in prison, has stirred considerable controversy. This proposed amendment to the criminal code, debated earlier this month by the Cypriot Parliamentary Committee of Legal Affairs, aims to elevate certain offenses from civil to criminal status.

Deputy Attorney General Savvas Angelides, and Committee Chair Nicos Tornaritis expressed that this amendment is only a “first step” in combating the spread of harmful “misinformation.”

Angelides cleared recently of corruption allegations, emphasized the need to balance freedom of speech with the curtailment of reckless misinformation, stating, “There are defenses when there is good faith.” He assured that the amendment would not restrict professional journalists from performing their duties, as it explicitly excludes opinion and criticism.

However, this stance is met with skepticism and alarm from various press freedom groups. Eleni Mavrou, representing the Association of Newspapers and Periodicals Publishers, described the amendment as a “blow to democracy,” arguing it would lead to self-censorship among journalists wary of criminal repercussions. Similarly, George Frangos, President of the Cyprus Union of Journalists, highlighted the subjective nature of terms like “fake news,” which could be exploited to suppress dissent.

U.S. Secret Service Director Kimberly Cheatle resigned Tuesday amid widespread outrage over her agency’s failure to prevent the attempted assassination of former President Donald Trump at a Pennsylvania campaign rally earlier this month.

Cheatle’s resignation, which was first reported by NBC News citing sources, came a day after she was blasted by members of a House committee at a hearing on the Secret Service’s actions leading up to Trump’s July 13 rally in Butler Township.

Cheatle rejected calls at that hearing to resign, saying she was the best-qualified person to head the Secret Service, which is responsible for protecting the president, vice president, their family members and leading presidential candidates.

The director angered members of the House Oversight and Accountability Committee by refusing to answer many questions about the Secret Service’s actions surrounding Trump’s rally...

On Tuesday, Cheatle in a letter wrote to Secret Service staff, “In light of recent events, it is with a heavy heart that, I have made the difficult decision to step down as your Director.”
