On Wednesday, the alliance issued a communiqué that slammed China for its trade relationship with Russia, and NATO has been working to build alliances in the Asia Pacific in line with the US’s military buildup against China.
Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto was asked about these efforts and said, “NATO is a defense alliance… we can’t organize it into an anti-China bloc.”
NATO started targeting China in its documents in 2020, and in 2022, it formally declared the North Atlantic military alliance was facing a security “challenge” from Beijing. “The PRC continues to pose systemic challenges to Euro-Atlantic security,” the communiqué reads.
China has reacted by strongly warning the alliance to stay out of the Asia Pacific. This week, the Chinese military is conducting drills with the Belarusian military inside Belarus near the Polish border, a move seen as a message to NATO.

Dozens of corpses were found scattered across alleys and destroyed homes in Gaza City on 12 July, civil defense crews reported, coming hours after Israeli forces withdrew from the area and left a trail of destruction behind them.
“Our crews have begun operations to retrieve the martyrs in the industrial area, Al-Katiba, and Tal al-Hawa, and we are working to extinguish the fires in homes burned by the occupation forces,” civil defense spokesman Mahmoud Basal said.

Officials have been split on the designation of the IRGC, which some believe would harm London’s diplomatic relationship with Tehran
The UK Labour Party has signaled that it is unlikely to rush into designating Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) as a terrorist organization.
David Lammy, the newly-appointed UK Foreign Secretary and member of the Labour party, told The Guardian on 8 July that he would consult with his colleagues on the implications for Iranian foreign policy after the election of reformist Masoud Pezeshkian as Iran’s president last week.
“I’ve seen the development over the last 24 hours. I want to speak to other colleagues about that and what that really means on the ground, I think it’s a little bit early to say,” Lammy said.
“We recognize there are real challenges from state-sponsored terrorist activity, and I want to look closely at those issues, and how the predecessor system works for states, as well as for specific terrorist organizations,” he added.
The Foreign Secretary also said he was looking into potentially amending existing legislation that would allow London to “put targeted proscription-style restrictions” on state-affiliated organizations such as the IRGC.
...James Cleverly, Shadow Home Secretary, said in August 2023 that proscribing the IRGC would be “counterproductive.” UK officials were reportedly divided on the matter at the time.
Last year, advisor on terrorism law Jonathan Hall argued in a paper that proscribing the IRGC would mean London would have to accept that state actors can be “concerned in terrorism” under the Terrorism Act 2000.
According to the paper, this would be a deviation from the longstanding UK policy position.

The report adds that it “does not know if and how many soldiers and civilians were harmed as a result of these instructions, but from the accumulated information, it appears that quite a few of them were at risk, exposed to Israeli fire – even if they were not the target.”
