The Altalena Affair: Is Israel Heading Towards a Civil War?
“There will be no civil war” in Israel, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said on June 18. But he might be wrong.
Netanyahu’s statement was made in the context of the growing popular protests in Israel, especially following the long-anticipated resignations of several Israeli War Cabinet Ministers, including Benny Gantz and Gadi Eisenkot – both former chiefs of staff in the Israeli army.
These resignations did not necessarily isolate Netanyahu, as the man’s popularity rests almost entirely on the support of the right and the far right. However, the move further illustrated deep and growing rifts in Israeli society, which could ultimately take the country from a state of political upheaval to an actual state of civil war.
Divisions in Israel cannot be viewed the same way as other political polarizations currently rife among Western democracies. This assertion is not necessarily linked to the legitimate view that, at its core, Israel is not an actual democracy but, rather, due to the fact that Israel’s political formation is unique.
The story began long before the current Gaza war.
In February 2019, the leaders of three Israeli parties formed a coalition, Kahol Lavan, or ‘Blue and White’. Two of Kahol Lavan’s founders, Gantz and Moshe Ya’alon, were also military men, widely respected among the country’s powerful military establishment, thus society at large. Despite their relative electoral successes, they still failed to dislodge Netanyahu from office. So, they went to the streets.
Taking the conflict to the streets of Tel Aviv and other Israeli cities was a decision not made lightly. It followed the collapse of a strange government coalition, cobbled up by all of Netanyahu’s enemies, unified around the single objective of ending the right and far-right reign over the country. Naftali Bennet’s failure was simply the last straw.
The terms ‘right’ and ‘far-right’ may give the impression that the political conflict in Israel is essentially ideological. Though ideology does play a role in Israeli politics, anger at Netanyahu and his allies is largely motivated by the feeling that the new right in Israel is attempting to reconfigure the very political nature of the country.
So, starting in January 2023, hundreds of thousands of Israelis launched unprecedented mass protests that lasted until the start of the Israeli war on Gaza. The initial collective demand of the protesters, supported by Gantz and the who’s who of the Israeli military and liberal elites, was to prevent Netanyahu from altering the political balances of power that have governed Israeli society for the last 75 years. With time, the demands, however, turned into the collective chant of regime change.

Many point to the tense political situation in Israel prior to Oct 7th as potentially playing into Netanyahu’s motives to ignore intelligence indicating an attack.

...Before Oct 7th, Netanyahu was scared to allow / disallowed the defense minister, Gallant, to meet with US officials without him being present, the majority of Israelis were afraid of civil war, and Israeli citizens were leaving or looking to leave the country in “unprecedented” numbers.

Former Army Maj. Harrison Mann recently resigned over US support for Israel
A former US military intelligence analyst has warned that Israel is risking a major war in Lebanon for Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s political survival.
Former US Army Maj. Harrison Mann resigned from the Pentagon’s Defense Intelligence Agency earlier this year over the US’s backing of the Israeli slaughter of Palestinians in Gaza and has been speaking out against President Biden’s policy of full-throated support for Israel.
In comments to The Guardian, Mann said, “We know specifically that the Israeli prime minister must continue to be a wartime leader if he wants to prolong his political career and stay out of court, so that motivation is there.”
His comments echo a report from The Washington Post that was published at the beginning of the year. It said US officials were concerned that Netanyahu might view war in Lebanon as key to his political survival.
Mann said he expects Israel to target residential areas in southern Lebanon in the event of a full-blown war, a tactic known as the Dahiya Doctrine, named after a neighborhood in Beirut that Israel bombarded in 2006.
“It’s not like an actual written doctrine, but I think we can be very comfortable assessing that bombing civilian centers as a way to compel the enemy is clearly an accepted and shared belief in the IDF and Israeli leadership. We’ve just seen them do it in Gaza for the past nine months,” Mann said.
He warned that Hezbollah would be able to hit back hard against Israel. “They probably have the ability to at least partially overwhelm Israel’s air defenses, strike civilian infrastructure around the country, and inflict a level of destruction on Israel that I’m not sure Israel has really ever experienced in its history – certainly not in its recent history,” he said.

A couple days after this went viral, Gad Saad called for censoring the Anti-Zionist League which was drawing attention to him being a former Israeli intelligence agent. Musk’s twitter had obliged the request to censor the Anti-Zionist League.
Elon Musk had replied to Gad Saad 4 times in 2 hours, including this exchange. Elon Musk having obliged this request to “shut it down!”, responded: "I have actual Mossad Merch btw. But the CIA has some really great merch."
To me, this felt very much like the infamous “We will coup whoever we want! Deal with it.”..., as I was writing this, the Wall Street Journal published an exclusive titled, “Musk’s SpaceX Forges Tighter Links With U.S. Spy and Military Agencies”
"SpaceX is deepening its ties with U.S. intelligence and military agencies, winning at least one major classified contract and expanding a secretive company satellite program..."
... towards the end of a big article I wrote in August, titled, "The Suspiciously Convenient Timing of Covid for the Davos Elite and the WEF's 'Great Reset' — I sought to address red flags of Elon Musk’s twitter, notably “Freedom of speech, not freedom of reach” and comments on “lawful but awful” content, by Linda Yaccarino.
"If you're going to post something that is lawful but is awful, you get labeled. You get deamplified which means it cannot be shared. And it is certainly demonetized" - Linda Yaccarino on twitter policy
See what she is saying there? “Okay we won’t overtly censor you if its awful, but if we, or our advertisers, (or maybe the mossad and CIA) don’t like it, we deamplify you so nobody actually sees it”.

...Yet while twitter’s official policy is to limit visibility and algorithmically suppress whatever is deemed “lawful but awful” speech, Elon Musk talks out the other side of X’s mouth to say Twitter will uphold speech to the maximum extent the law allows, as he has repeatedly said since buying twitter - a claim he repeated just days ago:
...Maximum Free Speech Allowed by Law? Or “Lawful but Awful” Content Gets Censored and “Freedom of Speech, Not Reach”…. Which is it? You Can’t Have Both
I think the continued censorship (both covert and overt) a year after Musk taking over twitter, the declared “freedom of speech not reach” policy, and other red flags, such as his major companies having major contracts with the US military (and apparently now intelligence agencies), point to Musk having rebranded censorship, rather than eliminated it.
Despite censorship being abound in twitter 2.0, many still view twitter as a good faith actor trying to revive free speech, as Elon still promotes himself as the savior of free speech. Elon Musk recently tweeted a meme reemphasizing the new twitter being branded as pro free speech. He has been making a lot of tweets like this recently, really leaning into the free speech marketing as he cozies up with intelligence agencies.

Even a former Mossad Chief attended the Israeli protest, taking aim at Netanyahu, and his political motives for failing to reach a deal with Hamas for the return of the hostages.
....Former Mossad Chief Danny Yatom said during the demonstration that Netanyahu was seeking to keep the war in Gaza going because "it seems to him that as long as the guns are roaring, it is easier for him to 'dissolve' his criminal trial," and that freeing the captives was not a priority for the prime minister...
....Israeli defense minister Gallant, who is seen as a political rival of Netanyahu alongside Gantz, at this time in April called for a Hostage deal to be made. Gantz was one of the officials identified by Haaretz having “increasingly believed that Netanyahu didn’t consider the return of the hostages the main mission in the war”...
A hostage deal did not pan out.
After all, Netanyahu has been sabotaging all Hostage negotiations.
....The same day the Hostage Families account made its debut on twitter, on June 4th, Mediate ran the headline: "Biden Implies Netanyahu Is Prolonging Israel-Hamas War For His Own Political Gain".
This implication by Biden echoed what many Israelis have been saying, including a former Mossad Chief as discussed earlier in the article: Netanyahu is prolonging the war for his own political agenda (implication is against the best interests of Israelis)
From my observations, the protests by the Israeli families have gotten very little attention in American media, and in discussion by Americans. I think this is by design.
If the Israeli protests were front and center... I think there would be much more hesitation to support Netanyahu & Co, even amongst those who fashion themselves pro-Israel. More may see that Netanyahu and Israel's far right are leading Israel off a cliff
I think that many of those in America blindly in support of Netanyahu and the ruling government would potentially see things differently if they understood the opposition to Israeli leadership is being led by Israel families, and why that is happening..
Again, it is easy for the people on the right, lost in cultural conditioning and partisan expectations, to dismiss college protestors calling for a ceasefire as “blue haired marxist Hamas supporters”, but it would not be so easy to dismiss the family members of the victims of Oct 7th as Hamas.. Not that Netanyahu’s allies in the Likud party haven’t tried.

US and Venezuela Agree to Improve Ties
A top Venezuelan negotiator reported that Caracas and Washington agreed to work on improving the relations between the two nations. The US has waged an economic war and supported multiple coup attempts against Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro.
In a post on X, President Nicolas Maduro’s top negotiator Jorge Rodriguez said the two sides agreed to a “willingness” to “improve relations” during an initial meeting. The negotiator wrote that the US and Venezuelan teams agreed to continue the talks.
The US has maintained sanctions on Venezuela for over a decade. Under President Donald Trump, the economic war escalated to a maximum-strength attempt to destroy the Venezuelan economy and lead to the overthrow of Maduro. Additionally, during the Trump presidency, the US-backed Juan Guaido, who made several unsuccessful overt coup attempts.
The Biden White House has largely continued Trump’s policy. At times, Biden has engaged Caracas in talks but conditioned all sanctions relief in Venezuela to comply with US dictates in Venezuelan presidential elections. Previous negotiations between Caracas and Washington broke down when Venezuela disallowed the US-preferred candidate to run for president.
The economic war on Venezuela has pushed Caracas into developing ties with other nations sanctioned by the US, including Iran. The sanctions have also impoverished the Venezuelan people, contributing to tens of thousands of deaths.
