Blinken Bets Big on AI to Combat “Misinformation”

The current US secretary of state, Anthony Blinken, has revealed that his department is testing AI-based tools as a way to fight “misinformation.”

In conversation with the State Department’s chief data and AI officer Matthew Graviss, he cited a number of initiatives – such as the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals and Washington’s Enterprise AI Strategy as the foundations for the ultimate goal – using AI to “advance our foreign policy.”

The second part of the push to equip the State Department with AI tools is to – “strengthen this institution.”

According to Blinken, his department is a leader within the government when it comes to testing and “harnessing” the technology. Some reports speak about this as combating whatever happens to be considered foreign disinformation.

And while on the subject of meddling, the Washington Times says AI tests are “part of an ambitious media monitoring and analysis project that spans the globe.”

...Blinken’s remarks reveal how the technology is used seemingly innocuously as a (translation and summarization) tool “in multilateral organizations;” but then he praised the ability of AI-powered tools to make mass surveillance (“monitoring”) cover a much larger number of media, making its scope and scale “vast,” as the report put it.

And also – combat “disinformation” – which Blinken quite dramatically refers to as “one of the poisons in the international system today.”

Israel Approves Largest West Bank Land Grab in Three Decades

The theft of Palestinian land and illegal expansion of Jewish settlements seek to impair the creation of a Palestinian state

Israeli authorities last month approved the largest seizure of land in the occupied West Bank in over three decades, anti-settlement watchdog Peace Now revealed on 3 July.

The activists said the approval allows for the appropriation of 12.7 square kilometers of land in the Jordan Valley, northeast of the West Bank city of Ramallah. By illegally authorizing their seizure, Tel Aviv is allowing the land to be leased to Israelis and banning private Palestinian ownership.

According to Peace Now, this marks the largest single appropriation approved since the 1993 Oslo Accords. The move comes after the seizure of 8 square kilometers of land in the West Bank in March and 2.6 square kilometers in February.

“2024 marks the peak in the extent of declarations of state land,” Peace Now said in a statement.

Al Jazeera's West Bank correspondent Nida Ibrahim reported late on Thursday that Israeli authorities announced plans to confiscate "1,300 hectares” in Aqraba village in the north of the occupied West Bank.

“These lands are owned by Palestinians, and they’re located in Area C. When you look at the Palestinians who cannot build, you also look at the Israelis, who are not just allowed to build in Area C, but allowed to expand at the expense of the indigenous people living there,” Ibrahim said.

She added that Israeli authorities are holding meetings across the next two days to “regulate and allow the building and push for more units to be built in illegal Israeli settlements in … the occupied West Bank."

Israel's illegal land grabs are a direct threat to the formation of an independent Palestinian state. Although Israeli settlements in the occupied West Bank and East Jerusalem are illegal under international law, more than 700,000 Jewish settlers occupy over 200 settlements and outposts across the territory.

Ultranationalist Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich has overseen a surge in Palestinian land seizures and settlement expansions since coming to power as part of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's government coalition.

Wikileaks: Verified document from Israeli Ministry of Intelligence in October 2023 suggests forced displacement of Gaza civilians to Egypt would "yield positive and long term strategic results".

Ukraine Will Be Told It’s Too Corrupt To Join NATO at Next Week’s Summit

NATO is expected to announce that it's stationing a civilian official in Ukraine

Ukraine will be told that it is too corrupt to join NATO at the alliance’s summit in Washington next week, The Telegraph reported on Tuesday.

The report cited a US State Department official who said Ukraine needed to take “additional steps” before talks on its NATO membership could progress. “We have to step back and applaud everything that Ukraine has done in the name of reforms over the last two-plus years,” the official said.

“As they continue to make those reforms, we want to commend them, we want to talk about additional steps that need to be taken, particularly in the area of anti-corruption. It is a priority for many of us around the table,” the official added.

President Biden has frequently cited corruption as a reason for not admitting Ukraine into NATO, but that has not stopped him from spending over $100 billion on military and economic aid for the Ukrainian government with virtually no oversight.

The position is expected to be outlined in a NATO communique issued during the summit. During last year’s NATO summit, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky was looking for a clear roadmap to membership, but the alliance’s communique only offered a vague statement that it would invite Ukraine to join “when Allies agree and conditions are met.”

NATO is poised to make some gestures to show support for Ukraine, including the stationing of a senior civilian official in Kyiv, according to The Wall Street Journal. The idea is to show support for future Ukrainian NATO membership without actually offering an invitation.

The Journal also reported that the alliance will announce the establishment of a new command in Wiesbaden, Germany, to oversee military aid and training for the Ukrainian military. The idea is to have the alliance take over duties currently overseen by the US so they could continue in the event that a future US president wants to reduce US involvement in the proxy war.

The report said the steps to “Trump proof” the Ukraine proxy war have taken on a new urgency after President Biden’s poor performance in the first presidential debate
