By voicing support for the expansion of Israel's borders to new territories while they can't even protect civilians in their current homes, Israeli far-right leaders are being very clear that keeping Israelis alive or securing the future by working toward a political solution are not on their list

UN: Israeli Authorities Responsible for Crimes Against Humanity

A United Nations inquiry into the Israeli onslaught in Gaza found officials in Tel Aviv were culpable for myriad war crimes

Speaking to the UN Security Council, the head of an investigatory body probing the Gaza war found Israeli officials committed war crimes during military operations in the Strip.

Navi Pillay, chairperson of the Independent International Commission of Inquiry on the Occupied Palestinian Territory, announced her findings to the UNSC on Wednesday, stating the commission had concluded that “Israeli authorities are responsible for war crimes, crimes against humanity, and violations of international humanitarian and human rights law.”

She explained that those crimes include “extermination, intentionally directing attacks against civilians and civilian objects, murder or willful killing using starvation as a method of War, forcible transfer, gender persecution, sexual and gender-based violence amounting to torture and cruel or inhuman treatment.”

The commission noted that Hamas has committed similar crimes throughout the latest conflict.

During the eight-month assault on Gaza, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) have killed over 37,000 Palestinians and injured an estimated 85,000. Israeli bombings have also destroyed most of Gaza’s homes, schools, mosques, hospitals, and farmland. Hundreds of thousands of Palestinians have been plunged into near-famine conditions.

Putin Accuses NATO of Threatening Security in Asia for Russia, Other Nations

The comments come amid Washington’s massive buildup for war with China and increased tensions with North Korea

President Vladimir Putin accused NATO of creating major security threats for Russia in Asia on Thursday, Reuters reported. This comes amid Washington’s escalating buildup for war with China, which has seen increased involvement by the North Atlantic alliance, as well as mounting tensions on the Korean Peninsula. Moscow maintains a “no limits” partnership with Beijing and inked a mutual assistance pact with Pyongyang this week.

During a subsequent visit to Vietnam, Putin told a press conference that Moscow “[sees] what is happening in Asia: a bloc system is being put together.” He continued, “NATO is already ‘moving’ there (to Asia) as if to a permanent place of residence. This, of course, creates a threat to all countries in the region, including the Russian Federation. We are obliged to respond to this and will do it.”

Additionally, the Kremlin leader threatened Seoul with retaliation following reports that South Korea is considering arming Kiev for its war with Russia, in which it serves as a NATO proxy. The comments from a senior South Korean presidential official followed the announcement that Pyongyang and Moscow had inked a mutual defense pact during Putin’s visit to the DPRK this week. Seoul has joined the US-led sanctions blitz against Russia and provided humanitarian aid to Ukraine, but has so far been reluctant to furnish Kiev with military hardware.

Putin assured reporters that South Korea “has nothing to worry about because our military assistance under the treaty we signed [with North Korea] only arises if aggression is carried out against one of the signatories. As far as I know, the Republic of Korea is not planning aggression against the DPRK.”

New Legal Powers for Jewish Settlers Open Door to ‘Actual Annexation’ of West Bank

The Israeli military has given religious settler and minister Bezalel Smotrich increased legal control over the occupied West Bank

The Israeli military has quietly handed over significant legal powers in the occupied West Bank to pro-settler civil servants working for Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich, the Guardian reported on 21 June, in a move that will help accelerate Israel’s illegal annexation of the occupied Palestinian territories.

The Israeli military announced the transfer of responsibility for dozens of bylaws at the Civil Administration on its website on 29 May. The Civil Administration governs the West Bank under the military's direction.

Michael Sfard, an Israeli human rights lawyer, said: “The bottom line is that [for] anyone who thought the question of annexation was foggy, this order should end any doubts. What this order does is transfers vast areas of administrative power from the military commander to Israeli civilians working for the government.”

The transfer will allow Smotrich and his civilian appointees from his religious settler movement to further remove domestic legal obstacles to the theft of Palestinian land for Jewish settlement in the West Bank.

It will also allow Smotrich to further limit Palestinians from building new homes on their own land, which are needed as their population grows.

Israel captured the West Bank and militarily occupied it in 1967. It is home to millions of indigenous Palestinian Christians and Muslims.

Acquiring territory through war and establishing foreign settlements therein is illegal under international law.

The Guardian notes that Israeli politicians have long sought to​ find ways to annex the occupied Palestinian West Bank and make it formally part of Israel.

The transfer of laws, which received little attention in the Israeli press, follows a years-long campaign by pro-settlement politicians to acquire legal powers in the West Bank previously held by the Israeli military as the occupying power.

IDF: Rafah Crossing Completely Destroyed, No Longer Usable - 2 Days Ago

Prior to its destruction, the crossing served as a crucial lifeline to bring food and other aid to over a million Palestinians

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) said that Gaza’s lone border crossing with Egypt had been completely destroyed by its operations in the area. In recent days, the IDF has targeted the few undestroyed areas left in the Strip.

On Wednesday, Israeli Army Radio reported that the Rafah crossing was now unusable. “This is how Rafah crossing looks today, completely destroyed and no longer usable, after being taken over by Brigade 401 in one night,” the radio station stated. “Due to its relative proximity to the border, the Israeli army used the crossing as a stopping point and resting area.”

The Gazan media ministry reported the destruction on Monday, stating that “Occupation forces damaged Rafah crossing’s halls that were used by locals to exit the Strip.” Images reviewed by the Middle East Eye reportedly showed the exterior of the structure was incinerated.

Israel began its operations in Rafah on May 7. Prior to the assault, the crossing served as the main lifeline for more than one million displaced civilians who were sheltering in the city. Over the past six weeks, aid shipments into the Strip have plummeted by two-thirds, triggering fears of full-blown famine.
