Turkish Exports to Israel Down 99 Percent in May Following Trade Ban

Ankara announced last month that it was suspending shipments to Israel until Gaza received a ‘sufficient flow' of aid

Exports from Turkiye to Israel nosedived as Ankara enacted a policy to cease all shipments to Israel until Gaza receives enough humanitarian aid, Bloomberg reported on 3 June.

According to preliminary data from TurkStat, annual shipments from Turkiye to Israel plummeted 99 percent to $4.4 million. The official statistics service will issue full trade data for May later on in June.

Turkish exports to Israel for the first five months of 2024 decreased by 40 percent compared to the same period last year.

Ankara announced in early May that it would suspend its trade ties with Tel Aviv until Israel allows sufficient aid into Gaza.

“Export and import transactions related to Israel have been stopped, covering all products,
” The Turkish Trade Ministry said in a statement.

The government body added that “Turkey will strictly and decisively implement these new measures until the Israeli Government allows an uninterrupted and sufficient flow of humanitarian aid to Gaza.”

In turn, the Israeli finance ministry announced that they would terminate the free trade agreement with Turkiye and issue a 100 percent tariff on all imports. ,,

Before the war on Gaza began in October, Turkiye and Israel were in the process of normalizing ties following decades of tensions, Bloomberg writes.

Erdogan has been vocally critical of Israel throughout the war, increasing after a defeat in the nation’s local elections to gain support for his party.

Despite the public criticism of Israel by Turkiye, it took Ankara six months to implement its ban on exporting construction materials to Israel.

However, this move was temporarily lifted one month later in May to allow Turkish factories already working with Israel to continue exporting these materials.

Turkiye also decided last month to participate in South Africa’s case at the International Court of Justice (ICJ) that accuses Israel of committing genocide against the Palestinian people while it entered its fifth month.

IRGC Vows Revenge for Israel Killing Iranian Military Advisor in Syria

The commander of Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) vowed on Wednesday (June 5) that Israel will “pay” for killing an Iranian military advisor in Syria in strikes that hit targets north of Aleppo on Monday (June 3) night.

Iranian media reported that IRGC advisor Saeed Abiyar was killed in the strikes, marking the first Iranian killed by Israel since the April 1 Israeli bombing of Iran’s consulate in Damascus.

“The child-killing Zionist criminals should know that they will pay for the innocent blood that was shed in this crime; they should wait for the response,” said IRGC chief Maj. Gen. Hossein Salami.

Putin Claims Russia May Supply Long-Range Weapons to Enemies of West in Retaliation for Ukraine Support

Vladimir Putin has claimed Russia could retaliate in kind against those permitting Ukraine to target Russia with their long-range missiles—by providing such weapons to countries within striking distance of Western nations.

In wide-ranging remarks at his annual economic forum in St Petersburg, the Russian president sought to insist that Moscow “does not care” about the upcoming US election, claimed candidate Donald Trump’s hush money conviction was “political,” and dismissed fears that Russia wants to attack NATO as “nonsense.”

But he warned that the United States and Germany’s recent authorization for Ukraine to use their weapons to hit specific Russian targets close to Kharkiv could lead to “very serious problems,” calling Berlin’s decision a “very dangerous step.”

“That would mark their direct involvement in the war against the Russian Federation, and we reserve the right to act the same way,” Putin told a three-hour meeting with the senior editors of international news agencies.

Because using such Western weapons involves military personnel of those countries controlling the missiles and selecting targets, Putin claimed Moscow could take “asymmetrical” steps elsewhere in the world.

“If they consider it possible to deliver such weapons to the combat zone to launch strikes on our territory and create problems for us, why don’t we have the right to supply weapons of the same type to some regions of the world where they can be used to launch strikes on sensitive facilities of the countries that do it to Russia?” he said.

“We will think about it,” Putin added.

Russian Warships Steam for Caribbean as Ukraine Tensions Go Global

In a show of force perhaps prompted by President Biden's authorization of Ukrainian strikes inside Russia using US weapons, a group of Russian warships is en route to the Caribbean, a senior US official has told McClatchy and the Miami Herald.

White House officials alerted members of Congress to the Russian move on Wednesday (June 5).

The deployment signals Russia's capacity to operate globally while still fully engaged its third year of war in Ukraine. “This is about Russia showing they are still capable of some level of naval power projection,” the official said. “We should expect more of this activity going forward.” In March, Ukraine claimed it had either sunk or disabled a full third of Russia's ships in the Black Sea.

CBS News reports that long-range Russian bombers will rendezvous with the ships for combined naval and air maneuvers. Such exercises are not without precedent: Russia conducted similar combined-arms Caribbean maneuvers in 2019, and had a streak of sending ships into the Western Hemisphere at least annually from 2013 to 2020. Following the summer exercises, Russia is expected to engage in a worldwide naval exercise this fall, sources tell CBS.

The Pentagon is tracking a "handful" of ships and support craft that are expected to reach Caribbean waters in the upcoming weeks. US analysts speculate that the flotilla will make port calls in both Cuba and Venezuela.

EU Commission is confidentially planning an unprecedented expansion of surveillance measures of digital devices, extending even to household appliances, including smart refrigerators.

“The draft is titled: "Recommendations from the High-Level Group on Access to Data for Effective Law Enforcement." In German: Recommendations of the expert group on how access to digital data can be regulated in order to ensure effective prosecution.”

Why would you need to be prosecuted for something you have in your fridge?

Giant Venomous Flying Spiders With 4-Inch Legs Heading to New York Area as They Spread Across East Coast, Experts Say

First came the spotted lanternflies, then the cicadas — and now, the spiders? The Northeast U.S. is bracing for an invasion of giant venomous spiders with 4-inch-long legs that can parachute through the air.

Earlier this year, New Jersey Pest Control warned of the incoming spiders, saying Joro spiders will be "hard to miss" as females have a leg span of up to 4 inches and are known for their vibrant yellow and grey bodies.

"What sets them apart, however, is their ability to fly, a trait uncommon among spiders,"
the company said. "While not accurate flight in the avian sense, Joro spiders utilize a technique known as ballooning, where they release silk threads into the air, allowing them to be carried by the wind."

...A peer-reviewed study published last October by invasive species expert David Coyle found that the invasive species is "here to stay." The arachnids are native to Asia, but were introduced to north Georgia around 2010, the study said, and are continuing to spread. Experts have warned that the spiders could spread to New York since 2022, but none have been detected – yet.

"Anyone that doesn't sort of like all the creepy crawly things, this has all of the characteristics that makes them squeamish,"
Coyle previously told CBS News, saying a press release that "data show that this spider is going to be able to inhabit most of the eastern U.S.."

NATO to Expand Defense Tech, Intelligence Sharing with Kyiv

NATO is planning to expand cooperation with Ukraine on defense technology and share more intelligence about Russia’s electronic warfare capabilities, as some of its members lift constraints on Kyiv’s ability to wage war.

The conflict has pushed the North Atlantic Treaty Organization to devote more resources to cybersecurity deterrence and tracking Russia’s military tech, Assistant Secretary General David van Weel told journalists this week.

“Ukrainians are innovating at a very high speed,” he said Tuesday (June 4) in Krakow, Poland. “But of course, the Russians are not stupid. That means innovation in the battlefield is not a static thing. It’s more like chess.”

Recent Russian advances have led Ukraine’s allies to loosen restrictions on weapons they provide, with the US and Germany authorizing attacks on Russian territory for the first time. Such strikes had previously been forbidden for fear of antagonizing the country with the biggest nuclear arsenal.

An agreement that introduces new frameworks for sharing information, including on supply chains for drones, will be finalized in time for the alliance’s July summit in Washington, according to van Weel.

Joining BRICS+ ‘Good Alternative’ to EU: Turkiye

Turkiye’s interest in joining BRICS+ will be discussed at the bloc’s upcoming foreign ministers’ meeting this month

Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan said on 4 June during a trip to China that his country is interested in joining the BRICS+ group of emerging economies.

“Certainly, we would like to become a member of BRICS. So, we’ll see how it goes this year,”
Fidan was cited as saying on Tuesday by the South China Morning Post (SCMP) newspaper.

Fidan noted that since some European nations have opposed Turkiye's joining the EU, authorities in Ankara are considering BRICS+ as a “good alternative.”

"We cannot ignore the fact that BRICS, as an important cooperation platform, offers some other countries a good alternative. We see potential in BRICS,” the Turkish diplomat said.

SCMP also cited Fidan as saying that he hopes to attend the BRICS+ foreign ministers meeting scheduled for this month in the Russian city of Nizhny Novgorod.

“One of the topics on the agenda is expected to be the possibility of Turkey, a NATO ally, joining the BRICS grouping.” T
urkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan declared an intention to join the bloc at its summit in Johannesburg six years ago, yet little progress has been made since then.

US Test Fires Two Unarmed Minuteman III Nuclear ICBMs

This week, the US test-fired two unarmed Minuteman III intercontinental ballistic missiles (ICBMs), which are designed to carry nuclear warheads and are part of the US nuclear triad.

The tests come amid soaring tensions between the US and Russia over the proxy war in Ukraine. The US Air Force insisted the two tests had nothing to do with “current world events,” although the US has previously canceled ICBM tests due to tensions with Russia.

According to Defense News, the tests were conducted on June 4 and June 6. The ICBMs were launched from the Vandenberg Space Force Base in California, and both the Air Force and Space Force were involved in the tests.

The ICBM launches came a few weeks after Russia conducted drills simulating the use of strategic nuclear weapons, which came in direct response to provocative rhetoric from Western officials. Russia pointed specifically to talk about NATO sending troops to Ukraine.

'Thank God I escaped': Palestinian journalist becomes target for" far-right" Israeli mob

Palestinian journalist Saif Al Qawasmi became a story in his own right when dozens of far-right Israelis attacked him in full view of the world’s media.

Al Qawasmi was covering the ultranationalist Flag March, which sees tens of thousands of far-right Israelis, mostly teenagers, parade through the Muslim Quarter of Jerusalem’s Old City on Wednesday.

A photo of Al Qawasmi being mobbed inside Damascus Gate by a swarm of teenagers quickly went viral online, and became a symbol of the danger the march poses to Palestinians, particularly journalists.

He was knocked to the ground and kicked repeatedly, sustaining a head injury.

“The settlers stole my phones, filming equipment and they beat me and insulted me,” he told The National on Thursday after his ordeal.

Twitter Founder Jack Dorsey Warns Social Media Algorithms Are Draining People of Their Free Will—and Elon Musk Agrees

If social media is the equivalent of a weapon of mass destruction, then Jack Dorsey would be a contender for the digital era’s Robert Oppenheimer.

Speaking at the 16th annual Oslo Freedom Forum on Wednesday (June 5), the remorseful Twitter co-founder expressed how conflicted he felt at his own creation born out of the noble ideals of open-source protocols before becoming corrupted by the realities of needing to survive in a competitive marketplace.

And he had a warning: social media and internet companies that grew into trillion-dollar behemoths by discovering content in the vast, unorganized expanse of the internet and curating it to maximize user engagement are just the first manifestation of this danger.

What Facebook and Google were for the Web, companies like OpenAI are for the coming era of artificial general intelligence.

AI tools will know us better than we know ourselves and, either through design or default, influence our thinking at a subconscious level, even if their algorithms are made transparent.

“This is going to sound a little bit crazy, but I think the free speech debate is a complete distraction right now. I think the real debate should be about free will,” he said in Norway’s capital of Oslo, home of the Nobel Peace Prize.

“We are being programmed. We are being programmed based on what we say we’re interested in, and we’re told through these discovery mechanisms what is interesting—and as we engage and interact with this content, the algorithm continues to build more and more of this bias.”

“Yeah, Jack is right,” the Tesla CEO posted on Wednesday.
