Russia and China ‘Close’ To Replacing Swift — Business Regulator

The two countries have been promoting their own domestic payment systems as a reliable alternative

Moscow and Beijing are developing a system of settlements which could allow cross-border transactions without the use of the Western financial messaging system SWIFT, Russian Presidential Business Rights Commissioner Boris Titov has revealed.

Addressing the results of the “Russia and China: Cooperation in a New Era” international conference held in Moscow last week, Titov told TASS the two countries have accelerated efforts to move away from SWIFT to trade using their respective national currencies.

“Many regional banks are already replacing it (SWIFT) with the Chinese analogue CIPS,” the official said on Monday, adding that the Chinese system’s use for payments in yuan will continue to expand.

Titov is also the Russian Chairman of the China-Russia Friendship Committee for Peace and Development.

Moscow has been promoting its own domestic payment system as a reliable alternative to SWIFT since many of the country’s banks were disconnected from the Western financial network in 2022.

Russia’s SPFS interbank messaging system was created in 2014, and functions like SWIFT. It ensures the secure transfer of financial messages between banks both inside and outside the country.

In January, the Bank of Russia said that 557 banks and foreign organizations from 20 countries had received access to SPFS.

Report: Israeli Officials Think Netanyahu Remarks Could Sabotage Ceasefire Deal

Israeli officials are worried that recent comments from Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu could sabotage the chances of the Gaza ceasefire proposal put forward by President Biden, Axios reported on Monday.

The Israeli officials said there was “constructive ambiguity” in the proposal that could allow Israel and Hamas to enter the first phase of the deal, which involves a six-week truce and initial hostage and prisoner exchange, without Israel committing to a permanent ceasefire.

A permanent ceasefire and Israeli withdrawal from Gaza has been Hamas’s main demand for a hostage deal. But since Biden outlined the potential agreement, Netanyahu and his close aides have said Israel would not agree to a permanent ceasefire until it achieves its goals, which include “destroying” Hamas’s capabilities.

Under the potential deal, the two sides would negotiate the terms for a permanent ceasefire during the first phase. A senior Israeli official told Axios that Netanyahu was “killing” the ambiguity by ruling out a permanent truce.

“Instead of keeping things ambiguous, his statements are pushing Hamas to ask for more clarification, making it harder to get a deal,” a second Israeli official said.

The official added that it appeared Netanyahu was trying to placate Ministers Bezalel Smotrich and Itamar Ben Gvir, who are threatening to resign and bring down the coalition government if the war cabinet agrees to the deal.

Blinken Urges Israeli Officials To Stand Behind Tel Aviv’s Ceasefire Deal

Israeli leaders do not appear ready to accept the ceasefire and prisoner exchange deal they themselves proposed

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken spoke to Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant and war cabinet minister Benny Gantz on 2 June to discuss the latest ceasefire and prisoner exchange deal unveiled late last week by US President Joe Biden...

On Friday, President Biden said the deal would “bring all the hostages home, ensure Israel's security, create a better day after in Gaza without Hamas in power, and set the stage for a political settlement that provides a better future for Israelis and Palestinians alike.”

Though the deal was unveiled by President Biden, it was proposed by Israel.

However, Israeli leaders do not appear ready to accept the deal they themselves proposed and are instead committed to continuing the war.

The Times of Israel reported that “While Israeli officials have confirmed that the offer publicly laid out by Biden on Friday was, in fact, the proposal Jerusalem submitted, Israeli leaders have asserted that the war will continue until Hamas has been destroyed, and large sections of the Israeli government have criticized Biden for failing to provide clarity as to how that would be achieved.”

This forced President Biden to urge Israel to “stand behind” the deal as he laid out its details in his Friday speech.

The Times of Israel reported as well that two ultra-nationalist ministers in Prime Minister Netanyahu's ruling coalition, Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich of Religious Zionism and National Security Minister Itamar Ben Gvir of Otzma Yehudit, have vowed to bring down the government if any ceasefire deal is signed.

The two parties won 14 seats when running together in the 2022 elections and are crucial to the governing majority of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's core 64-strong coalition.

On Monday, Netanyahu invited National Security Minister Ben Gvir to a meeting to discuss the deal.

The Israel Hayom daily quoted sources in Netanyahu's office as saying that contrary to Biden's remarks, the draft does not have a clause obligating Israel to end the fighting and Netanyahu plans to show Ben Gvir that it is not an “irresponsible deal,” the source said.

... Smotrich has held a series of meetings with rabbis associated with his Religious Zionism party to discuss quitting the government, Kipa News reported.

"The Federal Reserve Bank of New York has written a report outlining the narratives around "declining dollar shares in official reserves, and increasing roles for gold holdings by central banks," which is says has been "inappropriately" generalized beyond "the actions of a small group of countries."
The report authors found global central banks and finance ministries held nearly $12 trillion of foreign exchange reserves as of the end of 2023, with nearly $7 trillion composed of U.S. dollar assets. World Gold Council data shows "global central banks purchased over 1,100 tons of gold in 2022—more than double the purchase amounts of the previous year—and maintained a similar purchase level in 2023," according to the report.
"The Fed now admits some countries are moving to gold," tech investor and former Coinbase chief technology officer Balaji Srinivasan posted to X, pointing to what the Fed says is a "small group" that "represents 3 billion people. So 37.5% of the world is moving away from dollars towards gold."

Covid Vaccines May Have Helped Fuel Rise in Excess Deaths — The Telegraph

Experts call for more research into side effects and possible links to mortality rates

Covid vaccines could be partly to blame for the rise in excess deaths since the pandemic, scientists have suggested.

Researchers from The Netherlands analysed data from 47 Western countries and discovered there had been more than three million excess deaths since 2020, with the trend continuing despite the rollout of vaccines and containment measures.

They said the “unprecedented” figures “raised serious concerns” and called on governments to fully investigate the underlying causes, including possible vaccine harms.

U.S. Seizes Scott Ritter’s Passport

The US State Department has seized the passport of former Marine and UN weapons inspector Scott Ritter, he told RT on Monday (June 3).

Ritter was on his way to Russia for the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum (SPIEF) when he was pulled off the plane and had his documents confiscated.

“I was boarding the flight. Three [police] officers pulled me aside. They took my passport. When asked why, they said ‘orders of the State Department’. They had no further information for me,” Ritter told RT. “They pulled my bags off the plane, then escorted me out of the airport. They kept my passport.”

Ritter is a former US Marine Corps intelligence officer, who later served as the US and UN weapons inspector in Iraq. He is also a RT contributor, writing about international security, military affairs, Russia, and the Middle East, as well as arms control and nonproliferation.

Nearly Half of Israelis Support Lasting Occupation of Gaza: Poll

Almost two-thirds of Israelis agree that the army’s conduct in Gaza is either ‘appropriate’ or ‘hasn’t gone far enough’

Forty percent of Israelis are in favor of their army establishing control over post-war Gaza, according to a new poll published in Hebrew media.

The survey, released on 1 June by Israeli news site I24, was conducted between the end of March and the start of April.

Those forty percent are “advocating for Israel to assume control over Gaza following the ongoing conflict,” according to results obtained from 1,001 Israelis, which also show “broad support for current military actions.”

The poll also reveals that 39 percent of respondents believe that the Israeli army’s conduct in Gaza has been “appropriate.” Another 34 percent believe that the army has “not gone far enough.”

Only 19 percent said Israel’s war on Gaza has been excessive and disproportionate..
