UN's Top Court Orders Israel to "Immediately Halt" Rafah Offensive

The top United Nations court, the International Court of Justice (ICJ), has on Friday (May 24) issued an emergency order for Israel to halt its military operations in the southern Gaza city of Rafah.

"Israel must immediately halt its military offensive," judges at the ICJ, or world court (which deals with disputes between countries, while the ICC prosecutes individuals) said, saying conditions had been met to issue a new emergency order.

Israel must further halt "any other action in the Rafah Governorate, which may inflict on the Palestinian group in Gaza conditions of life that could bring about its physical destruction in whole or in part," according to the ruling issued by the body's president Nawaf Salam. He also called the situation 'disastrous' for the Palestinians.

Ukraine Enforces Desperate Conscription Laws As Russian Troops Close In On Kharkiv

Ukraine is now enforcing a new mobilization law which is being called 'divisive' among many Ukrainian citizens and some political leaders.

The law requires men ages 18-60 to carry their military paperwork at all times to be presented to authorities on demand. It lowers the minimum draft age from 27 to 25 (Ukraine has a demographic shortage of men ages 18-25). And, all military age Ukrainian men abroad must come back to Ukraine to renew their passports, including refugees driven from their homes in the early days of the war.

Conscripts must update their address, contact information, and military records within 60 days through government institutions or a mobile application. This is in preparation for a national draft database containing information on every fighting age male in the country. The conscription measures are expected to greatly reduce Ukraine's labor pool, forcing many businesses to shut down. Essential workers are not exempt from the draft.

Vladimir Zelensky signed two other bills into effect, one allowing prisoners to be deployed to the front lines, the other bill quintuples fines for people caught trying to evade the draft.

The Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) is the most famous of the 18 US government agencies that comprise the Intelligence Community (IC) of the United States of America. Unlike the Federal Bureau of Investigations (FBI), the law strictly prohibits CIA employees or contractors from spying upon or running clandestine operations against American citizens on US soil.

But now, a new Twitter Files investigation reveals that a member of the Board of Trustees of the CIA’s mission-driven venture capital firm and ostensibly “former” IC and CIA analysts were involved in a 2021-2022 effort to take over Twitter’s content management system.

The effort also involved:

— a long-time IC contractor and senior Department of Defense R&D official who spent years developing technologies to detect whistleblowers (“insider threats”) like Edward Snowden and Wikileaks’ leakers;

— the proposed head of the DHS’ aborted Disinformation Governance Board, Nina Jankowicz, who aided US military and NATO “hybrid war” operations in Europe;

— Jim Baker, who, as FBI General Counsel, helped start the Russiagate hoax, and, as Twitter’s Deputy General Counsel, urged Twitter executives to censor The New York Post story about Hunter Biden.

These existing or former IC employees, contractors, or intermediaries weren’t satisfied with simply controlling Twitter. They also wanted to use PayPal, Amazon Web Services, and GoDaddy in a totalizing effort to de-platform, de-monetize, and excommunicate from the Internet entirely those individuals that the IC et al. deems to be a threat.

There is much that we still do not know about the effort. We do not know if officials within the CIA or any other IC organization ran the operation. It is possible that the only individuals involved in the effort were the ones we discovered. And none of the individuals involved responded to our request for information except for one.

But thousands of pages of Twitter Files and documents contained therein paint a clear picture of an organized operation by existing or former IC employees and contractors, using well-established IC tradecraft, to take control of Twitter’s content moderation.

Our investigation comes at a moment when governments and intelligence agencies around the world are stepping up their efforts to monitor and censor their citizens. It thus has large implications for policymakers and the public in Western nations that look to the US as a model for free speech and citizen control of the military.

This is a joint Public-Racket investigation....

Palestinians Stranded in Gaza Even After Paying Egypt $5,000 Each to Flee

The Rafah crossing between Egypt and Gaza has been closed indefinitely since the Israeli military seized the crossing on 7 May, a closure which has left thousands of Palestinians in limbo.

Since the beginning of Israel’s war on Gaza in October, and the subsequent closure of all other crossings, the Rafah crossing with Egypt has been the only passageway for civilians fleeing the conflict.

An Egyptian company with exclusive control on exits and transfers via the terminal had been charging Palestinians at least $5,000 per adult and $2,500 per child to cross to the Egyptian side.

In April, Hala Consulting and Tourism Services, a firm owned by Sinai tribal leader and business tycoon Ibrahim al-Organi, made at least $2 million per day from Palestinians, Middle East Eye has revealed.

Now, those who were due to travel in May after paying thousands of dollars in advance have no clear means of getting a refund.

California Approves Online Digital ID Rules for Social Media Use

The California Senate has approved SB 976, a bill mandating age verification for social media use, sparking concerns over online anonymity and free speech. Critics argue that this legislation could pose significant threats to privacy, affecting not just Californians but potentially all Americans.

SB 976 imposes strict regulations on social media interactions for minors. It prohibits notifications during school hours and late at night without parental consent and mandates that social media feeds for minors be presented chronologically rather than algorithmically, again without parental approval. Social media companies can implement these measures only if they have “reasonably determined” the user is not a minor, a definition set to be clarified by the California Attorney General by 2027. Critics fear this could lead to the requirement of sensitive personal information, such as government IDs, for verification.

Though SB 976 stops short of mandating ID-based verification, similar laws have already taken root in states like Arkansas, Ohio, and Utah, with Florida considering similar measures. Given California’s market size, experts warn that companies might adopt age verification nationwide to simplify compliance.

The bill narrowly passed the Senate, with only two Republicans, Brian Jones and Kelly Seyarto, voting against it. Notably, the bill’s lone Republican co-author, Scott Wilk, abstained from voting.

Israeli Troops Abduct Injured Civilians From Gaza Hospitals: Report

Many reports have now emerged of Israeli forces torturing Palestinians in detention camps in the Negev

The Israeli army has been abducting injured Palestinian civilians from hospitals in Gaza and transporting them to a detention camp in the Negev, where they are shackled to beds and undergo major surgeries, often without painkillers, the Guardian reported on 24 May.

A whistleblower from the Sde Teiman detention camp told the Guardian some patients had come from hospitals in Gaza after being abducted by Israeli forces. “These were patients who had been captured by the Israeli army while being treated in Gaza hospitals and brought here. They had limbs and infected wounds. They were moaning in pain,” the source said.

The source described how the field hospital in the detention camp consisted of tents, including an emergency room where patients underwent surgery on a stretcher as there was no operating table.

The patients were handcuffed to the beds, made to wear diapers, and blindfolded.

In one case, a detainee’s hand had been amputated “because the wrists had become gangrenous due to handcuffing wounds.”

A second whistleblower who spoke with the Guardian said, “There were about 15 patients in total, they were all handcuffed and blindfolded. They were naked, wearing diapers and were covered by blankets. Most of them appeared to have obvious war injuries; some had undergone amputations, and others underwent major abdominal or chest surgery. They were practically naked except for a diaper.”

The source said he witnessed a patient undergoing painful medical procedures without any painkillers.

In the other section of the camp, the whistleblowers said up to 200 Palestinian detainees from Gaza are being held in cages under severe physical restrictions.

“The prisoners are detained in a sort of cages, all blindfolded and handcuffed,” the source said. “If someone speaks or moves, they are immediately silenced or they are forced to stand with their hands raised above their head and handcuffed for up to one hour.”

“If they are unable to keep their hands raised, the soldiers attach the handcuffs to the bars of the cage. Many of the detainees had infected wounds that were not being properly treated.”

The source claimed the Israeli military had no proof that detainees were members of Hamas. Some inmates repeatedly asked why they were there. According to the whistleblower, most were considered suspects, and some were released. “But they had not been formally charged. It was a kind of filtering camp, a provisional detention,” he said.

Biden to Make Kenya Major Non-NATO Ally as Country Delays Armed Deployment to Haiti

President Joe Biden announced the US would make Kenya a Major non-NATO Ally (MNNA) during President William Ruto’s visit to Washington. Countries that become MNNAs receive more access to American training, weapons, and technology. In exchange for Ruto agreeing to send Kenyan forces to Haiti, Biden lavished Nairobi with an upgraded military relationship.

On Thursday (May 23), Biden informed Congress of his intent to make Kenya the 19th MNNA. “Kenya is one of the US Government’s top counterterrorism and security partners in sub-Saharan Africa,” the letter from the White House to the Capitol said. “And the designation will demonstrate that the US sees African contributions to global peace and security as equivalent to those of our Major Non-NATO Allies in other regions.”

Becoming a MMA will significantly upgrade Kenya’s military ties with the US. Nairobi will get access to advanced US weapons, training, and technology. The arms include depleted uranium anti-tank ammunition.

The State Department Human Rights report on Kenya in 2023 found that government forces had engaged in significant and creditable acts of “arbitrary or unlawful killings, including extrajudicial killings; enforced disappearances; torture or cruel, inhuman, or degrading treatment or punishment by the government.” It notes Nairobi did not improve its human rights practices last year.

Israel Green Lights Autopsy of Gazan Doctor Tortured to Death in Detention

Former prisoners and Israeli officials have given multiple accounts of the inhumane conditions inside Israeli detention centers, where Palestinians are often shackled 24 hours a day and made to endure severe torture

Israeli authorities on 23 May authorized an autopsy on the body of Dr Adnan al-Bursh, who served as the head of orthopedic surgery at Al-Shifa Hospital before being arrested and tortured to death in Israeli detention.

The autopsy will be performed in the presence of a doctor representing the family.

A request submitted last week by Bursh's wife, Yasmin al-Bursh, for the investigation of her husband's death, was approved by Judge Gad Arenberg, who gave Tel Aviv seven days to respond.

According to the autopsy request, the doctor's health was good at the time of his arrest.

A statement from the Palestinian Prisoners Society released earlier this month said that Bursh, 50, was tortured to death on 19 April in Ofer Prison, an Israeli-run incarceration facility in the occupied West Bank. The group characterized his murder as a “deliberate assassination.”

Israeli media reports have claimed that the circumstances of Bursh's death “remain unknown and that Israeli authorities had not informed his family about them.”

Palestinians who met with the late surgeon in prison said he was in a “deplorable medical condition.”

“We barely recognized him … It was clear he had gone through hell, torture, humiliation, and a lack of sleep. He suffered from pains and a severe lack of food,” an unnamed Palestinian doctor told Haaretz.
“We tried to talk to him and calm him down, but he was shocked and sounded like he was scared and in pain. This was not the person we knew, but a shadow [of his former self],” the doctor added.

Bursh was arrested last December along with 10 other medical workers during the Israeli military ground assault on Jabalia refugee camp as he was treating patients at Al-Awada Hospital in northern Gaza.

Netanyahu Received Four Intel Warnings of ‘Security Risks’ Before 7 Oct

Many Israelis blame the prime minister for allowing Hamas' Operation Al-Aqsa Flood to happen

Israeli media reported on 24 May that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu had received four warnings before Hamas carried out its military operation Al-Aqsa Flood on 7 October.

Israeli Channel 13 reported Thursday that “Netanyahu received four warnings or reports from the Military Intelligence Agency, Aman, during the past year, 2023, indicating the existence of security risks, before October 7th.”

“The Israeli army spokesman indicated that, between March and July 2023, the Aman Military Intelligence Division sent four warning messages to Netanyahu that the country’s enemies are exploiting the ongoing internal divisions to prepare for any military operations to attempt to harm Israel,” the channel added.

Netanyahu has denied such foreknowledge, saying that all reports or intelligence briefings he received showed that “Hamas is deterred and wants to reach a settlement.”

Israeli intelligence issued multiple reports suggesting Hamas was planning to invade Israeli settlements and military bases surrounding Gaza. However, these reports were ignored by higher-level intelligence officials, including warnings issued in the weeks and days ahead of 7 October.

These reports, as well as the ease with which Hamas fighters breached the Gaza border fence and the slow response of the air force and army, have led some Israelis to speculate that Netanyahu and others in Israeli intelligence and the military welcomed a Hamas attack. The events of 7 October, including many false claims of Hamas atrocities, such as rape and beheading babies, have given Israel a pretext to wage its brutal war on Gaza.

Claims of Hamas atrocities were further amplified by Israel’s killing of many of its own civilians during the Hamas attack under the Hannibal Directive. Israeli forces used heavy weapons from attack helicopters, drones, and tanks to kill Hamas fighters and the Israelis they had taken captive from settlements (kibbutzim) and the Nova music festival.

Far-right religious elements in Israel, led by prominent ministers in Netanyahu’s government, have long called for a war on Gaza to forcibly expel its population and build Jewish settlements in its place.

Israel responded by officially declaring war on the Gaza Strip, razing it with devastating bombing, and sending troops in for ground military operations.

‘Voluntary Migration’ From Gaza ‘Last Step’ To Full Israeli Control: Minister

Settler groups demand that Gaza be ethnically cleansed of Palestinians to make way for Jewish settlement and have regularly attacked humanitarian aid shipments trying to reach the strip to feed starving people

Israel’s far-right National Security Minister Itamar Ben Gvir said on 21 May that Gaza should be under full Israeli control and ethnically cleansed to pave the way for Jewish settlement.

Speaking with ultra-Orthodox news outlet Kikar HaShabbat, the national security minister said the “encouragement of voluntary emigration” of Palestinians from Gaza is the “last” and “most important” step in Israel being able to fully occupy and build settlements in the strip.

“If the emigration happens, and hundreds of thousands leave, you’ll be able to bring more and more and more people in,” the right-wing minister noted.

Ben Gvir added that he “would love to live in Gaza if possible,” should these goals be met.

Haaretz reported on Monday that while Ben Gvir was en route last week to a far-right rally calling for settlement building in Gaza, he was in shock over the police presence at the Tarqumiyah checkpoint, stationed to “protect” aid envoys to Gaza.

According to one witness at the checkpoint, Ben Gvir got out of his personal car and said, “This can't be what my cops are doing instead of fighting terrorism. That's not why I do what I do, ensuring your salaries. I don't want you doing these missions.”

“Why are my cops here? Why are they doing this, that's not their job,” the minister was heard saying over the phone while there.

After arriving at the right-wing rally, Ben Gvir said that he “opposes” aid trucks being sent to provide Gaza with needed resources.

Earlier this month, The head of the UN World Food Program said northern Gaza has entered “full-blown famine” due to Israel's blockade.

Despite the police presence, right-wing settlers have repeatedly succeeded in blocking off roads and violently attacked aid trucks to the besieged enclave, dumping aid contents on the street and setting several trucks on fire.

Witnesses noted that when the Southern District Police Commander, Amir Cohen, reached the Tarqumiyah checkpoint to respond to Ben Gvir’s criticism, he told the minister, “This is a policy decision, and this is the job of the Israel Police. We are exercising our responsibility.”

Ben Gvir was angry the police chief stationed two special units, the Coastal District Tactical Unit, and the Yoav Unit, to protect the humanitarian aid convoys.

Social Upheaval Will Lead Israel To Collapse in Coming Years: Study

Two Israeli government administration experts say deep divisions in Israel’s society will bring about the end of the ‘Zionist dream’

A new study by Israeli government administration experts Eugene Kandel and Ron Tzur says that Israel will not make it to its 100th anniversary as a state, particularly due to deep divisions plaguing its society and political landscape, as reported by Haaretz.

“After the government's attempt to weaken the judiciary last year, followed by Hamas' massacre in the south, a picture of total failure in the systems, management and operations of the administration has emerged,” the two wrote.

They added that in the “business-as-usual scenario in the political configuration today, there is a considerable likelihood that Israel will not be able to exist as a sovereign Jewish state in the coming decades.”

“In the Israeli political regime today, there is no possibility of ending the internal war. After the terrible disaster [of 7 October] and the functional break down it reflected, it is no longer possible to act within the same framework and expect better results.”

Kandel and Tzur highlight that Israel is divided into three main camps that clash in order to “impose their world view on the state,” according to Haaretz. They also note three main existential challenges: The economic challenge, the clash of values, and the fact that very few notice these dangers.

The three camps mentioned earlier are as follows. The first are those of the Jewish-democratic-liberal state who wish to live in a western-style democracy. Kandel and Tzur say that the majority of Israelis, including Arab Israelis and many religious Jews, identify with this “tribe.”

The second are those who support a religious state ruled by the Torah, who would prefer Rabbinic law over democracy. This camp is made up of the ultra-Orthodox.

The third are those who are against a Jewish state and prefer a state for all citizens. Kandel and Tzur say most of the Arab community prefers this type of state.

There’s no possibility of these three camps agreeing on a “social contract,” they write, adding that the divides can no longer be bridged.

The two experts say that after Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s attempt at overhauling the Israeli judiciary last year, it became clear that “the conceptions of identity and the visions of the two main Jewish groups clash and are even irreconcilable.”

Another phenomenon discussed in the study is one that is widely talked about: mass immigration.

Specifically, Kandel and Tzur believe mass immigration will start with the Israeli “elites.”

“This type of process can bubble for years, but if it happens, it is likely to be acute and fast, similar to a bank run. When the decision to leave comes, there is an advantage to do so before the big wave.”

...The departure of the elites will result in the end of Israel’s economic growth. “October 7 showed the terrible cost of the enemy's perception that Israel is weak. A further weakening could invite much more extreme and severe security challenges,” they go on to say, even potentially resulting in “the collapse of Israel and the end of the Zionist dream.”

Uncertainties have been more evident in recent years. A poll released in April last year shows that a majority of Israelis are fearful about the future of their state.

India and Iran’s Chabahar Deal Challenges US-Backed Trade Corridor

The 10-year India–Iran partnership to develop Chabahar Port could revolutionize regional geopolitics by bolstering the INSTC, undermining US influence and its IMEC project, and amplifying Indian and Iranian influence in Afghanistan despite US sanctions warnings.

On 13 May, India and Iran agreed to a 10-year partnership to establish a trade route connecting Iran, India, and Afghanistan through the strategic Chabahar Port. This move undermines hopes for a US-backed India–Middle East–Europe Corridor (IMEC) linking India with Europe, West Asia, and the Israeli occupation state.

The signing of a long-term agreement on Chabahar Port is strategically significant due to its anticipated role in the International North–South Transport Corridor (INSTC), an extensive land, rail, and seaside transport initiative linking Russia with Iran and India.

The Chabahar Port’s development under the Afghan–Iranian–Indian trilateral agreement will undoubtedly impact regional dynamics, as Iran and India will intensify their involvement in Afghanistan, further isolating the US and Pakistan.

Ziaul Haq Sarhadi, former director and coordinator of the Pakistan–Afghanistan Joint Chamber of Commerce and Industry (PAJCCI), tells The Cradle:

"Pakistan has already lost an 80 percent share of the transit trade with Afghanistan, despite Chabahar’s partial commissioning. With the signature of this deal, the remaining transit business would move to Iranian ports, cutting Pakistan completely out of the picture."...

US Response to the Iran–India Corridor

Washington’s dismay over the Iran–India corridor reflects a shift in priorities due to the realignment of tactics. Initially, the US did not object to India’s participation in the Chabahar project, believing it would rival China’s multibillion-dollar Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) and counteract Beijing’s expanding influence in the Indian Ocean and Arabian Sea. The US perceived the Iranian port as direct competition to the Chinese-funded Gwadar port in Pakistan’s Balochistan province, which softened its stance on Chabahar Port.

However, as Delhi and Tehran sealed the deal, the US prompted Iran’s neighboring countries to refrain from engaging in any trade with the Islamic Republic, which is already under US sanctions. Pakistani political circles assert that the US felt a geopolitical threat in the Indian endeavor, apprehending a more substantial economic and military partnership between Iran, Russia, and India through the establishment of Chabahar Port and its subsequent synchronization with the INSTC.

Biden's $320 Million Gaza Pier Has Detached & Drifted Onto Israeli Beach

A section of the $320 million floating pier built and erected off Gaza's coast has broken off and floated onto an Israeli beach. The Saturday (May 25) mishap is the latest setback for the US humanitarian aid project, after three US troops were reported injured aboard the pier two days prior, including one critically.

The Times of Isreal's military correspondent Emanuel Fabian has reported that "An American vessel used to unload humanitarian aid from ships into the Gaza Strip via a floating pier disconnected from a small boat tugging it this morning due to stormy seas, leading it to get stuck on the coast of Ashdod, eyewitnesses say."

The recovery operation has not gone well either, as "Another ship was then sent to try and extract the stuck vessel, but also got beached," Fabian writes.

American troops can be seen in footage standing helplessly on the beach.
