US Spies To Use Secretive AI Service From Microsoft
Microsoft's AI platform for US intelligence agencies has been deployed and is in a testing and accreditation stage
U.S. intelligence agencies will soon be using a secretive generative artificial intelligence (AI) platform from Microsoft that will let America's spies safely use AI models in the process of analyzing sensitive data.
Microsoft's generative AI model for intelligence agencies aims to get around security issues that stem from large language models' (LLMs) connection to the internet, which typically is used as a resource for training those models. Bloomberg reported that the AI tool is the first major LLM fully separated from the internet.
William Chappell, Microsoft's CTO for strategic missions and technology, told Bloomberg the AI tool was deployed to an "air-gapped" cloud environment isolated from the internet and features a model based on GPT-4 along with supporting tools. The company announced the new product at the AI Expo for National Competitiveness this week.
"This is the first time we've ever had an isolated version — when isolated means it's not connected to the internet — and it's on a special network that's only accessible by the U.S. government," Chappell told Bloomberg.

New X Policy Forces Earners to Verify Their Government ID with Israeli Verification Company
X, formerly Twitter, is now mandating the use of a government ID-based account verification system for users that earn revenue on the platform—either for advertising or for paid subscriptions.
To implement this system, X has partnered with Au10tix, an Israeli company known for its identity verification solutions. Users who opt to receive payouts on the platform will have to undergo a verification process with the company.
This initiative aims to curb impersonation, fraud, and improve user support, yet it also raises profound questions about privacy and free speech, as X markets itself as a free speech platform, and free speech and anonymity often go hand-in-hand. This is especially true in countries where their speech can get citizens jailed or worse.
“We’re making changes to our Creator Subscriptions and Ads Revenue Share programs to further promote authenticity and fight fraud on the platform. Starting today, all new creators must verify their ID to receive payouts. All existing creators must do so by July 1, 2024,” the update to X’s verification page now reads.

Israeli Forces Kill Dozens of Palestinians in Strikes Across Gaza
Israeli forces have killed at least 50 Palestinians in aerial and ground bombardments across the Gaza Strip and battled in close combat with Hamas-led fighters in the southern city of Rafah, health officials and the armed wing of Hamas say.
Israeli tanks advanced in Rafah’s southeast, edged towards the city’s western district of Yibna and continued to operate in three eastern suburbs, residents said on Thursday (May 23).
“The occupation [Israeli forces] is trying to move farther to the west. They are on the edge of Yibna, which is densely populated. They didn’t invade it yet,” one resident told the Reuters news agency, asking not to be named.

Hamas’ Military Ability Remains Largely ‘Intact’: US Intelligence
Only about a third of Hamas’ fighters have been killed, according to intelligence estimates, despite the nearly eight-month war on Gaza
US media reported on 21 May, citing intelligence estimates, that only about a third of the fighters from Hamas’ armed wing have been killed by Israel, while the majority of the group’s extensive tunnel network remains intact.
“Although Hamas’ communications and military abilities have been degraded, only 30 to 35 percent of its fighters — those who were a part of Hamas before the Oct. 7 attack — have been killed and about 65 percent of its tunnels are still intact,” Politico reported on Wednesday, citing US intelligence.
Washington has been “increasingly concerned that Hamas has been able to recruit during wartime — thousands over the last several months,” allowing it “to withstand months of Israeli offensives,” according to a person familiar with the intelligence.

Israel has previously claimed that around 12,000 Hamas fighters out of its supposed 30,000 have been killed, something the resistance group denies.
The Politico report comes just days after a Pentagon official, chair of the Joint Chiefs of Staff General CQ Brown, criticized Israel for failing to prevent Hamas’ return to prominence in areas where the Israeli army had operated.
Last week, US Deputy Secretary of State Kurt Campbell said that a “total victory” for Israel is not “likely or possible” in this war, adding that Tel Aviv is “struggling over what the theory of victory is” in Gaza.
Israel claimed in early January that all of Hamas’ battalions were dismantled in northern Gaza, including in the northern city of Jabalia, where Israeli forces are now operating once again and are taking heavy losses during battles with the Palestinian resistance, including Hamas’ Qassam Brigades and other groups.
The resistance remains entrenched in several other areas across Gaza, particularly in the southernmost city of Rafah – which Israel had labeled Hamas’ final stronghold...
Fighters continue to emerge from tunnels to ambush soldiers with RPGs and explosive devices and have recently stepped up the tactic of rigging buildings with bombs and detonating them with Israeli troops inside.
At the start of the war, Israel said its goal was to “eliminate” Hamas. Nearly eight months into the fighting, the group remains nowhere near elimination.
Experts, including Israeli and western analysts, have said that Israel has failed to achieve all its goals in the Gaza Strip, including wiping out the resistance and freeing prisoners held by Hamas.

Trump-RFK Jr. Feud Comes to a Head at Libertarian Convention
Tensions between former President Trump and Robert F. Kennedy Jr. are set to come to a head at the Libertarian Party convention this weekend in Washington as both presidential candidates court the party’s voters.
Both candidates will address the convention, and Kennedy has even challenged Trump to a debate at the gathering.
Trump’s surprising decision to appear at the event underscores the potential threat Kennedy could have as he seeks another term in the White House.
“What the Trump campaign wants to do is paint the picture that despite what you think about and hear about RFK Jr., and the words coming out of his mouth, he is nothing more than a far-left whacko,” said Ford O’Connell, a Republican strategist.

Israeli Officials Sweat Looming ICJ Order To Stop Gaza Blitz: Report
Concerns are growing in Tel Aviv that an unfavorable ruling by the World Court will markedly increase international pressure against the genocidal war in Gaza
Authorities in Israel “anticipate” that the International Court of Justice (ICJ) will rule on 24 May that the country needs to stop its genocidal war in Gaza and are scrambling to find the “next steps,” according to officials who spoke with Israel Hayom.
“Legal experts assessed there was a high probability the court would rule to issue injunctions following a petition filed by South Africa against Israel’s military actions,” a diplomatic source told the Israeli daily.
Tel Aviv is particularly concerned that the World Court will “order a cessation of Israeli operations in the city of Rafah in southern Gaza, or further, that it could seek to halt the broader war in Gaza entirely through court injunctions.”
The main fear among authorities is that an unfavorable ruling from the ICJ would “precipitate a similar resolution by the UN Security Council,” where the US would once again have to issue a veto as part of its continued campaign of covering up Israeli war crimes.
The ICJ has announced it will deliver its order on the additional measures requested by South Africa against Israel on Friday afternoon. ..
The Rafah campaign is “the last step in the destruction of Gaza and its Palestinian people,” argued Vaughan Lowe, a lawyer representing Pretoria.
“It was Rafah that brought South Africa to the court. But it is all Palestinians as a national, ethnic, and racial group who need the protection from genocide that the court can order,” he added.
Around one million Palestinians have fled Rafah over recent weeks to escape the Israeli onslaught. Nevertheless, violent clashes are raging across the besieged enclave as the Palestinian resistance remains far from defeated.

Biden Admin Working With Social Media Companies to Limit Pro-Palestinian Content
The Biden administration has publicly admitted that it is working with tech companies to “limit Hamas's use of online platforms, including social media,” part of a campaign to suppress pro-Palestinian and anti-Israel sentiment. Though there has been much speculation that the federal government is pressuring social media companies to police their networks, this is the first official confirmation of its counterterrorism efforts.
A little-noticed readout for a May 15 Hague meeting between the State Department’s Coordinator for Counterterrorism Elizabeth Richard and other governments said that Richard “updated the group on U.S. efforts to engage tech companies in voluntary collaboration to limit Hamas’ use of online platforms, including social media, for terrorist purposes.” The readout also notes that another similar meeting took place on December 13, in which the U.S. coordinated with partner governments to “target Hamas’ online propaganda.”
Platforms like Instagram, TikTok and Facebook have long banned terrorist organizations like Hamas. Now, however, the federal government is pressuring companies to ban “Hamas-linked” accounts and those of pro-Palestinian Americans.
Hamas is a formally designated terrorist organization, so it makes sense that counterterror officials like Richard would target their communications broadly speaking. But with overwhelming evidence that Americans are getting banned from social media for posts regarding the Israel-Hamas war, the U.S. government needs to make clear what the exact nature of its coordination with social media companies is on this subject and how Americans’ speech is being protected. (The State Department and the National Security Council did not immediately respond to requests for comment.)
Virtually every major social media platform has banned Hamas from their platforms. But some like Meta, parent company to apps like Instagram and Facebook, went a step further, banning “Hamas-linked” accounts and even ones without any link to Hamas for alleged “praise” of “dangerous organizations” — a category the company relies heavily on the U.S. government’s list of terrorist organization to define.
That’s exactly what happened to Shaun King, a prominent activist and former surrogate for Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders’ presidential campaign. In December, Meta informed King that his Instagram account with five million plus followers had been permanently suspended for “praise” of one of Meta’s designated dangerous organizations.
“The account was disabled due to multiple instances of praise for designated entities in violation of our policies,” a Meta spokesperson said in an email to King.
King told me that the ban came in response to a letter he had posted to his Instagram that December. In it, King praised the Houthi rebels in Yemen for blocking commerce heading toward Israel in the Red Sea, calling it “one of the most peaceful options to stop this genocide available to you” and thanking them for “trying to end the murder of over 25,000 Palestinians.”
...Since Hamas’s October 7 attack on Israel, cases like King’s are becoming increasingly common, according to a report by Human Rights Watch detailing 1,050 takedowns and other actions against pro-Palestinian content on Instagram and Facebook. In all but one case, the content was peaceful in nature, HRW says...

China Holds Taiwan War Games, Vows Blood of "Independence Forces"
China on Thursday (May 23) encircled Taiwan with naval vessels and military aircraft in war games, as it vowed the blood of "independence forces" on the self-ruled island would flow.
The two days of drills are part of an escalating campaign of intimidation by China that has seen it carry out a series of large-scale military exercises around Taiwan in recent years.
The drills come after Lai Ching-te was sworn in as Taiwan's new president this week and made an inauguration speech that China denounced as a "confession of independence."
As the drills got underway, China's military said they would serve as "strong punishment for the separatist acts of 'Taiwan independence' forces."

Germany’s Far Right in Turmoil After Its Top Candidate Defends SS
Maximilian Krah steps down from AfD board and suspends campaigning after saying not all SS members were criminals
The far-right Alternative for Germany’s lead candidate in EU elections has stopped campaigning and stepped down from the party’s board after a controversial interview with the Financial Times in which he said not all people who served in the SS were criminals.
Maximilian Krah on Wednesday said he had resigned from the AfD’s executive committee and would no longer appear at the party’s campaign events ahead of next month’s vote for the European parliament.
His comments on the SS have prompted the AfD’s French ally, the far-right Rassemblement National, to say it is severing ties with the German populists. The two parties sit in the same group in the EU parliament, Identity and Democracy.
“Enough is enough now: the AfD is just going from one provocation to another,” Marine Le Pen, the RN’s leader, told Europe 1 radio on Wednesday, explaining the party’s decision.
Prior to the SS comments, Krah made headlines after German police arrested one of his staffers, Jian Guo, on suspicion of spying for China.
In his interview with the FT, Krah said of the SS, which ran Adolf Hitler’s extermination camps: “Before I call someone a criminal, I’d really like to know what he did personally.”
He added that many of the 900,000 SS members were “simple farmers who didn’t have another choice”. He also noted Günter Grass, the celebrated German writer, had been a member of the Waffen-SS.
“It doesn’t mean that there wasn’t a particularly high proportion of criminals in these units and that on the whole it was the SS that took part in crimes — that is clearly true,” he said. “But I won’t say that [someone] was automatically a criminal because he wore the wrong uniform.”
The SS was declared a criminal organisation at the Nuremberg War Crime Trials.

UK MPs Applaud Ukrainian Neo-Nazis
British lawmakers cheered a delegation of the Azov Ukrainian military unit at a roundtable in Parliament on Wednesday (May 22), while Boris Johnson called them “heroes.”
The neo-Nazi militia was founded in 2014 by white supremacist Andrey Biletsky, who designed its logo with symbols once used by the SS. It was integrated into the Ukrainian armed forces, while retaining its Third Reich iconography. The battalion has been accused by Human Rights Watch, Amnesty International, and the UN of human rights abuses, including rape & torture of civilians.
3 members of Azov visited London and spoke before a group of parliamentarians. Lieutenant Arseniy Fedosiuk & Ruslan Serbov had been captured in Mariupol in 2022, while the third, Sergeant Vladimir Vernygora, joined the unit in 2023.
Fedosiuk & Serbov were presumably among the Azov members Russia handed over to Türkiye on condition they not return to Ukraine until the end of the hostilities.

AI Relies on Mass Surveillance, Warns Boss of Signal
The AI tools that crunch numbers, generate text and videos and find patterns in data rely on mass surveillance and exercise concerning control over our lives, the boss of encrypted messaging app Signal told AFP on Thursday (May 23).
Pushing back against the unquestioning enthusiasm at VivaTech in Paris, Europe's top startup conference where industry players vaunt the merits of their products, Meredith Whittaker said concerns about surveillance and those about AI were "two framings of the same thing".
"The AI technologies we're talking about today are reliant on mass surveillance," she said.
"They require huge amounts of data that are the derivatives of this mass surveillance business model that grew out of the 90s in the US, and has become the economic engine of the tech industry."

Under Pressure From Prisoners’ Families, Israel To Resume Truce Talks
A new video showing Hamas fighters holding captive soldiers on 7 October was released by prisoners’ families to pressure the Israeli government
Israel’s war cabinet approved a resumption of indirect prisoner talks with the Palestinian resistance on 23 May, coming after the release of a video showing female captives being held by Hamas’ armed wing on 7 October.
A source told Hebrew media that Tel Aviv’s negotiating team was given new directives to try to make a breakthrough in the prisoner talks.
The source was briefed on the details of a high-level Israeli meeting on the matter but did not elaborate on the specific guidelines for resuming the talks.
Meanwhile, the office of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said in a statement that the war cabinet has ordered Israel’s negotiating team “to continue negotiations for the return of the hostages.”
At the high-level meeting, Major General Nitzan Alon, one of the Israeli negotiators, presented an updated plan. This came after a previous plan for resuming talks was rejected by Netanyahu on 18 May.
A source told Kan radio that the Israeli negotiating team did not receive everything it asked for but that “at least progress can be made.”
Talks have recently stalled over Hamas’ insistence that a prisoner exchange be linked to an Israeli commitment for a permanent ceasefire, withdrawal of troops, and an end to the war, among the resistance group’s main terms, which it has refused to back down from.
Israel’s refusal has been among the leading obstacles to reaching an agreement.
The approval for renewed talks came a day after the families of Israeli prisoners released footage of a group of female soldiers being held captive by fighters of Hamas’ Qassam Brigades at the Nahal Oz military site on 7 October, one of the bases stormed by resistance fighters during Operation Al-Aqsa Flood. All five of the female soldiers remain captive in Gaza.
Hebrew media’s translation of the video claims that Hamas fighters described the prisoners as “women who can get pregnant,” implying that the fighters had intentions to rape the women. However, the Arabic word used by the fighters to describe the soldiers is sabaya, which translates to ‘female captives’ and bears no relation to pregnancy.
...The Hostages and Missing Families Forum released the video to pressure the Israeli government toward a deal that returns their relatives to Israel. Representatives of the prisoners’ families have repeatedly accused Netanyahu’s government of deliberately sabotaging talks.

Hungary is reassessing its role within the bloc as it has no wish to take part in a conflict against Moscow, the PM has said
In a discussion with Kossuth Radio, PM Orban said that Hungary is seeking ways to maintain NATO membership while abstaining from participating in operations it disagrees with.
Hungary’s position must be redefined, our lawyers and officials are working on ways to allow Hungary to continue to exist as a NATO member without participating in NATO activities outside the bloc’s territory. We need to create a new approach, a new definition for our position as a pro-peace force within NATO.
