Israeli Officials Seize AP Equipment, Cut Live Feed of Gaza

Israeli officials seized broadcasting equipment belonging to the Associated Press on Tuesday, arguing it was used to provide images to Al Jazeera, whose Jerusalem bureau was shuttered earlier this month following the passage of a new foreign broadcast law.

Why it matters: Press advocates have warned that the law creates a dangerous precedent for censoring independent news outlets in the region amid the ongoing war with Hamas.

Israeli lawmakers passed the measure last month, empowering the country's communications minister to take action against any foreign media network that it can prove poses a national security risk.
Tuesday's seizure has already garnered sharp criticism, with Israeli opposition leader Yair Lapid calling it "an act of madness."

...In a statement, AP's vice president of corporate communications Lauren Easton said the wire service "decries in the strongest terms" the actions of the Israeli government.

"The shutdown was not based on the content of the feed but rather an abusive use by the Israeli government of the country's new foreign broadcaster law," she added.

She also urged Israeli authorities to return the company's equipment and allow the news agency to reinstate its live feed immediately.

The German Parliament reportedly passed a bill Thursday downgrading the possession of child sexual abuse materials from a felony to a misdemeanor.

Possession and acquisition of child pornography will now receive “a minimum sentence of three months imprisonment in the future, and distribution with a minimum sentence of six months imprisonment,” the German Parliament, the Bundestag, writes in a press release issued Wednesday. It states that the possession and acquisition of child pornography will in the future be “classified as misdemeanors and not as crimes.” The bill received a majority of votes in the Parliament Thursday night, Reduxx reports.

Iran Orders ‘Special Commission’ to Probe Presidential Chopper Crash

Former foreign minister Javad Zarif said on Monday that the US was to blame for Raisi’s death due to sanctions on Tehran’s aviation program

The Iranian army’s Chief of Staff, Major General Mohammad Bagheri, ordered on 20 May an investigation into the helicopter crash northwest of Iran the day prior, which killed the country’s president Ebrahim Raisi, Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian, and several other officials.

Bagheri “commissioned a high-ranking delegation … to investigate the dimensions and causes of the President's helicopter crash,” according to Iran’s ISNA news agency. The investigation will be headed by General Ali Abdulahi, Deputy Coordinator of the Armed Forces General Staff, ISNA added.

Former Iranian foreign minister Javad Zarif said in a phone interview with state media earlier on Monday that he holds the US responsible for the crash, citing Washington’s sanctions on Tehran’s aviation program.

“One of the causes of this tragic event is the United States, which sanctioned the sale of the aviation industry to Iran,” Zarif said.

He added that US sanctions prevent Iran from maintaining adequate aviation facilities, adding that the crash will be “recorded in the blacklist of American crimes against the Iranian nation.”

The 45-year-old US-made BELL 212 helicopter carrying the Iranian president, foreign minister, and delegation was likely purchased by Iran’s Shah – an ally of the US and Israel – prior to the 1979 revolution that saw the establishment of the Islamic Republic.

US sanctions against Iran prevent the country from purchasing spare parts to maintain its fleet of civilian aircraft, most of which are over two decades old.

The sudden demise of Raisi and Amir-Abdollahian has prompted social media users and observers to speculate about Israeli involvement in the crash.

France Backs ICC After It Seeks Arrest Warrants for Israel’s Netanyahu, Hamas Leaders — [So Does Belgium]

France backs the International Criminal Court and the "fight against impunity", its foreign ministry said after the ICC prosecutor requested arrest warrants for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Hamas leaders for alleged war crimes.

On Monday, ICC prosecutor Karim Khan said he had requested arrest warrants for Netanyahu, his defence chief Yoav Gallant and three Hamas leaders, including its chief, Yahya Sinwar.

If such warrants are issued, members of the court, which includes nearly all countries of the European Union, could be put in a diplomatically difficult position.

"France supports the International Criminal Court, its independence and the fight against impunity in all situations," the foreign ministry said in a statement late on Monday.

While U.S. President Joe Biden called the legal step against Israeli officials "outrageous", the French foreign ministry took a different stance.

Media Manipulation: The Truth About The Gaza Death Toll

Controlling narratives is critical in the context of international war and the media. The UN’s reported death toll from Gaza has recently come under fire; allegations suggest that the UN dramatically reduced its numbers downward. The UN has denied this accusation, but it seems to be a part of a larger disinformation operation meant to support Israeli state propaganda and hide the truth about Palestinian suffering.

The UN promptly refuted the initial accusation that it had significantly altered the death toll from Gaza. UN Security Council Rejects Russia’s Space Weapons Resolution

The United Nations Security Council rejected a Russian-backed resolution that called to prevent the deployment of weapons in space after the U.S., France and the U.K. all voted against the measure.

The final vote was 7-7 with one abstention. In favor of the measure were Algeria, China, Ecuador, Guyana, Mozambique, Russia, and Sierra Leone.

Against the resolution were France, Japan, Malta, the Republic of Korea, Slovenia, the U.K., and the U.S., with Switzerland abstaining. The U.S., the U.K. and France are permanent members and have veto power.

The Monday (May 20) vote came after Russia vetoed a resolution last month that called to reaffirm a commitment to the 1967 Outer Space Treaty, which calls to prevent the deployment of nuclear weapons in outer space, a renewed fear after the U.S. accused Moscow of preparing to potentially put such a weapon in space.

Russia said it had vetoed that measure because it wanted to prohibit all weapons from being deployed in space.

Say Goodbye to Cloud Anonymity? New US Regulations Demand User Identification

The US Department of Commerce is seeking to end the right of users of cloud services to remain anonymous.

The proposal first emerged in January, documents show, detailing new rules (National Emergency with Respect to Significant Malicious Cyber-Enabled Activities) for Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS) providers, which include Know Your Customer (KYC) regulation, which is normally used by banks and financial institutions.

But now, the US government is citing concerns over “malicious foreign actors” and their usage of these services as a reason to effectively end anonymity on the cloud, including when only signing up for a trial.

Another new proposal from the notice is to cut access to US cloud services to persons designated as “foreign adversaries.”

As is often the case, although the justification for such measures is a foreign threat, US citizens inevitably, given the nature of the infrastructure in question, get caught up as well. And, once again, to address a problem caused by a few users, everyone will be denied the right to anonymity.

That would these days be any government’s dream, it appears, while the industry itself, especially the biggest players like Amazon, can implement the identification feature with ease, at the same time gaining a valuable new source of personal data.

The only losers here appear to be users of IaaS platforms, who will have to allow tech giants yet another way of accessing their sensitive personal information and risk losing it through leaks.

Meanwhile, the actual malicious actors will hardly give up those services – leaked personal data that can be sold and bought illegally, including by those the proposal says it is targeting.

Until now, providers of cloud services felt no need to implement a KYC regime, instead allowing people to become users, or try their products, simply by providing an email, and a valid credit card in case they signed up for a plan....

Fluoride in Pregnancy May Harm Child’s Brain Development: Study

A new study suggests a link between greater fluoride intake in pregnancy and toddlers with behavioral problems.

Children in the womb exposed to higher levels of fluoride — a mineral found naturally in water in varying amounts — later were more likely to experience temper tantrums, headaches, stomachaches, anxiety and symptoms linked to autism, according to research published Monday in JAMA Network Open.

“Exposure to fluoride during pregnancy does not mean that a child will experience greater neurobehavioral problems,” senior study author Tracy Bastain, an associate professor of clinical population and public health sciences at the University of Southern California’s Keck School of Medicine, told The Post.

“We found an association between higher prenatal exposure and more neurobehavioral problems at age 3 but more studies are needed to establish a causal link,” she explained.

Data for the study came from USC’s MADRES Center for Environmental Health Disparities.

The American Empire Is Crumbling Under Its Debt

This is part 3 of Washington DC: The Unaffordable and Unnecessary War Capital of the World. Read part 1 and part 2.

Since WWII was arguably the nation’s last “good war”, an illuminating way to measure the folly that has unfolded during the seven decades since then is to unpack the cost of veterans disability compensation and medical care by cohort of war service. The following figures are extremely conservative and exclude survivors, dependents, pensioners, housing, education and other VA benefits. But they do encompass roughly $180 billion or 52% of the current $346 billion per year Veterans Administration (VA) budget.

The disability compensation cost for each cohort is detailed by the VA, while the cost of medical care is assumed to be equal to the current annual average of $8,200 for each of the 9.18 million enrollees. Self evidently, the $286 million cost for WWII beneficiaries is a rounding error.

Number of beneficiaries and current budget cost for Disability Compensation And Medical Care:

WWII: 11,488 vets and $286 million.
Korean War: 59,092 vets and $1.4 billion.
Vietnam Era: 1,385,131 vets and $44.3 billion.
Gulf War era: 3,374,670 vets and $112.1 billion.
Other Peacetime: 831,932 vets and $20.5 billion.
Total: 5,662,273 vets at an average of $31,705/beneficiary= $179.5 billion.

For want of doubt, it is now nearly universally agreed that the two Iraq wars were sheer folly in which upwards of $1.5 trillion was wasted, to say nothing of the hundreds of thousands of Iraqis killed or injured by these pointless invasions and occupations. Yet the compensation and medical care cost for the 3.375 million disability beneficiaries of this cohort currently totals $112 billion per annum.

While that figure seems exceedingly large by any standard, it is evidently driven by the huge number of beneficiaries, not the $33,480 cost for each. As it happens, fully 41% of the 8.193 million Gulf War Era veterans are on disability...

In any event, given an average life expectancy of 75 years the Gulf War Era vets alone will generate deferred costs in current dollars of purchasing power (FY 2024 $) equal to about $5.6 trillion (50 years at $112 billion per year).

That’s right. The deferred cost of just one set of pointless Forever Wars amounts to 155% of the entire regular military budget of Russia on an annual basis; and on a lifetime basis, it’s actually equal to 17% of the entirety of the nation’s current towering public debt of $34 trillion!..

...In a word, there is something really haywire here. Official Washington is so caught up in its role as War Capital of the World that it does not even notice that the deferred cost of now long-forgotten wars in Korea, Vietnam and the Persian Gulf exceed the defense budgets of every friend or foe on the planet by a long-shot, and that only 0.1% of the current massive $346 billion VA budget is attributable to surviving veterans of the last war which arguably contributed to homeland security.

Needless to say, the issue goes far beyond the startling dollars and cents of the matter. What is actually at issue is the entire framework of post-WWII foreign policy that generated a permanent Warfare State and entailed the extension of a Washington-based empire across the length and breadth of the planet.

But that shift from a peaceful Republic thriving socially and economically behind the great ocean moats to an Empire straddling the globe was more than the fragile machinery of our Madisonian democracy could successfully handle. Elected officialdom was soon caught up in the excitement and intrigue of managing the Empire, trotting the globe and touring the allies, vassals and provinces as visiting plenipotentiaries of the Indispensable Nation.

So doing, they became shills for a global policeman narrative that served the interests of arms merchants and national security bureaucrats alike...
