🚨BREAKING: ICC Requests Arrest Warrants for Netanyahu, Hamas Leaders Over ‘War Crimes

An International Criminal Court prosecutor announced Monday that he has filed applications for arrest warrants against Israel Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, Defense Minister Yoav Gallant and Hamas leaders for allegedly committing "war crimes" during the conflict in Gaza. 

Prosecutor Karim Khan said in a statement that based on evidence collected and examined by his office, he has "reasonable grounds" to believe Netanyahu and Gallant "bear criminal responsibility for... war crimes and crimes against humanity committed on the territory of the State of Palestine." 

He said those alleged crimes include "starvation of civilians as a method of warfare" and "intentionally directing attacks against a civilian population."

Three Americans are accused of being involved in a failed coup attempt in Congo that left multiple people dead.

According to the Democratic Republic of Congo military, they stopped an attempted coup near the presidential palace.

Among the 50 people who were involved were three Americans who have been arrested.

A passport for one of these Americans is now spreading online, a 36-year-old U.S. citizen born in Maryland. (WaPo)

US ambassador to Congo, Lucy Tamlyn has acknowledged the involvement of US citizens...

The coup was allegedly led by US-based Congolese politician Christian Malanga.

He was killed at the presidential palace after he resisted arrest.

Belgium and Hungary Launch Controversial Digital IDs, Vaccine Passport, Ahead of EU Regulations

Belgium and Hungary are leading the way in launching digital ID wallets ahead of EU’s eIDAS (“electronic identification and trust services”) 2.0 regulation and EUDI Wallet coming into force later this month.

In Belgium, the MyGov.be app, covering all of the country’s federal public services, was launched on Tuesday, with the government promoting the digital identity as “simplifying” the use of its services, and “making life easier.”

In other words, the authorities there are playing the convenience card – while downplaying the risks that come with this type of centralization of people’s identities.

The wallet, via “eBox” mailbox, gives access to government-issued documents, as well as 683 services, identity data, Covid vaccination records, and more.

However, the success of the scheme is by no means guaranteed – on the one hand it is not mandatory, so people are free to decide not to use it.

Judging by an opinion poll Deloitte carried out last year, “71 percent of Belgians do not want a digital ID on their phone,” reports say, adding that the same survey showed that 79 percent “do not want a mobile driver’s license, while half refuse to fully digitize their IDs.”

“Ease of use” is also how digital ID is pushed in Hungary, where the appropriate app will be made available for download as soon as this week, while the service will be fully operational from September.

Enthusiastic reports about this development describe the digital ID program as “innovative,” “handy” and “saving costs.”

At the same time, putting all of a person’s data in one place and storing it in the cloud is advertised as something positive, instead of what opponents consider as scary – from the security standpoint alone.

The operation is centralized via Hungary’s Digital Citizenship Program. Wallet users will have all their administrative, etc., documents in that one place, plus a digital mailbox, their vaccine passport, and can rely on a pan-EU electronic signature, while electric payments will be “fully integrated.”

Hungary’s digital identity scheme uses biometric data obtained through facial recognition to match a user’s face “against a government database.”

Meanwhile, some security researchers in other EU countries are warning that as many as 75 percent of what are described as high-risk organizations (healthcare, banking, air travel…) “do not use the strongest verification method.”

Biden, Blinken Slam "Outrageous" ICC Arrest Warrants for Netanyahu: "We Will Always Stand With Israel"

U.S. President Joe Biden and Secretary of State Antony Blinken released statements on Monday (May 20) “fundamentally” rejecting the announcement from the chief prosecutor of the International Criminal Court (ICC) about arrest warrants for top Israeli officials along with Hamas terrorists.

“We reject the Prosecutor’s equivalence of Israel with Hamas,” Blinken wrote.

Blinken called the arrest warrant announcement “shameful” for equating Israel and Hamas.

“Hamas is a brutal terrorist organization that carried out the worst massacre of Jews since the Holocaust and is still holding dozens of innocent people hostage, including Americans,” Blinken wrote.

In the president’s statement, he echoed the point about creating a dangerous “equivalence” between Israel and Hamas.

“The ICC prosecutor’s application for arrest warrants against Israeli leaders is outrageous,” Biden wrote. “And let me be clear: there is no equivalence between Israel and Hamas. We will always stand with Israel against threats against its security.”

Blinken said the ICC has “no jurisdiction over this matter.”

“Fundamentally, this does nothing to help, and could jeopardize, ongoing efforts to reach a ceasefire agreement that would get hostages out and surge humanitarian assistance in, which are the goals of the United States continues to pursue relentlessly,” he wrote.

New 9/11 Evidence Points to Deep Saudi Complicity

For more than two decades, through two wars and domestic upheaval, the idea that al-Qaeda acted alone on 9/11 has been the basis of U.S. policy. A blue-ribbon commission concluded that Osama bin Laden had pioneered a new kind of terrorist group—combining superior technological know-how, extensive resources, and a worldwide network so well coordinated that it could carry out operations of unprecedented magnitude. This vanguard of jihad, it seemed, was the first nonstate actor that rivaled nation-states in the damage it could wreak.

That assessment now appears wrong. And if our understanding of what transpired on 9/11 turns out to have been flawed, then the costly policies that the United States has pursued for the past quarter century have been rooted in a false premise.

The global War on Terror was based on a mistake.

A new filing in a lawsuit brought by the families of 9/11 victims against the government of Saudi Arabia alleges that al-Qaeda had significant, indeed decisive, state support for its attacks. Officials of the Saudi government, the plaintiffs’ attorneys contend, formed and operated a network inside the United States that provided crucial assistance to the first cohort of 9/11 hijackers to enter the country.

The 71-page document, released in redacted form earlier this month, summarizes what the plaintiffs say they’ve learned through the evidence obtained in discovery and recently declassified materials.

World Economic Forum Founder Klaus Schwab Steps Back From Executive Post

🌍@COVID19Up: World Economic Forum founder and executive chairman Klaus Schwab will be stepping back from his role running the global gathering since he founded it in 1971.

Schwab announced his intentions in an email to staff on Tuesday (May 21) that was shared with Semafor by a person connected to the organization.

He will be stepping down as executive chairman and transitioning to a role as non-executive chairman, he said, adding the change in his role is pending approval by the Swiss government but should be finalized ahead of the WEF’s annual meeting in 2025.

Schwab has not named his successor, but said that over the last year, the group’s executive board, “under the leadership of President Børge Brende, has taken full executive responsibility.”

ICC Seeks Arrest Warrants for Israeli and Hamas Leaders

On Monday, the International Criminal Court announced it was seeking arrest warrants for senior Israeli and Hamas leaders for “war crimes and crimes against humanity” related to the October 7 Hamas attack on southern Israel and the relentless Israeli bombing campaign and starvation blockade on Gaza that has followed.

Karim Khan, the ICC’s chief prosecutor, said his office was seeking warrants for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Defense Minister Yoav Gallant. In a statement, Khan alleged the Israeli leaders were responsible for the following crimes:

Starvation of civilians as a method of warfare, as a war crime
Wilfully causing great suffering, or serious injury to body or health contrary, or cruel treatment as a war crime
Wilful killing, or Murder as a war crime
Intentionally directing attacks against a civilian population as a war crime
Extermination and/or murder, including in the context of deaths caused by starvation, as a crime against humanity
Persecution as a crime against humanity
Other inhumane acts as crimes against humanity

“We submit that the crimes against humanity charged were committed as part of a widespread and systematic attack against the Palestinian civilian population pursuant to State policy. These crimes, in our assessment, continue to this day,” Khan said.

The action by The Hague-based court came despite pressure from the US not to pursue Israeli officials, including a letter from 12 Republican senators that threatened sanctions or other action in response. The Biden administration also made its opposition known to the ICC’s plans despite supporting the court against Russian President Vladimir Putin. In a statement responding to the ICC, President Biden called its action against Israel “outrageous.”

“Let me be clear: whatever this prosecutor might imply, there is no equivalence — none — between Israel and Hamas. We will always stand with Israel against threats to its security,” Biden said.

The US could take extreme action against the ICC if it successfully arrests an Israeli official, although the court does not have its own police force. In 2002, then-President George W. Bush signed a bill into law nicknamed “The Hague Invasion Act” that allows the US to use “all means necessary and appropriate to bring about the release of any US or allied personnel being detained or imprisoned by, on behalf of, or at the request of the” ICC.

The ICC’s charges against Netanyahu and Gallant implicate President Biden and other US officials since they have provided so much military support and diplomatic cover for the Israeli campaign in Gaza. The US has also opposed South Africa’s genocide case against Israel at the International Court of Justice (ICJ) and rejected the ICJ’s ruling that it’s “plausible” Israel is committing genocide in Israel.

In his response to the ICC, Netanyahu accused Khan of being antisemitic, saying the prosecutor “takes his place among the great antisemites in modern times.” Netanyahu said that he “rejected with disgust the prosecutor’s comparison between democratic Israel and the mass murderers of Hamas. This is a complete distortion of reality. This is exactly what the new antisemitism looks like.”

Archaeologists Found an ‘Anomaly’ Near the Pyramids That May Reveal an Ancient Portal

A new study from Japanese and Egyptian researchers reveals the discovery of an L-shaped structure along with an accompanying anomaly right next to the Great Pyramids of Giza. Although its impossible to know for sure what the anomaly is, the researchers guess that the L-shaped discovery could be an entrance to a deeper structure.

According to the team’s research paper, published earlier this month in the journal Archeological Prospection, the structure is roughly 6.5 feet from the surface, measures 33 feet in length, and was backfilled after construction.

Below this L-shaped structure was an anomaly, lying 16 to 33 feet down, that the researchers described as “highly electrically resistive.” Such an anomaly could have a few explanations, but the team identified two main possibilities—a mixture of sand and gravel, or “sparse spacing with air voids.”

So, what exactly could this L-shape structure and its lower anomaly represent? Speaking with Live Science, Sato said the structure is likely not natural, as the shape is too sharp.

“It may have been an entrance to the deeper structure,” Sato and his colleagues wrote in the paper. That deeper structure sounds suspiciously like a tomb. “We believe that the continuity of the shallow structure and the deep large structure is important. From the survey results, we cannot determine the material causing the anomaly, but it may be a large subsurface archaeological structure.”
