African State’s PM Calls for End To French ‘Occupation’
A third of the Senegalese capital region is occupied by foreign bases, according to its PM
Senegalese Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko has suggested closing French military bases in the country, claiming their long-term presence is incompatible with the West African nation’s desire for complete control over its affairs.
The minister made the remarks at a joint conference with the French left-wing politician Jean-Luc Melenchon in Senegal’s capital, Dakar, on Thursday.
“More than 60 years after our independence... we must question the reasons why the French army for example still benefits from several military bases in our country and the impact of this presence on our national sovereignty and our strategic autonomy,” Sonko said.
France currently has about 350 troops in Senegal after it began downsizing the contingent of 1,200 based there in 2010. Critics have condemned the troops’ presence as a continuation of French dominance over the former colony, despite independence in 1960.
On Thursday, Sonko, a popular former opposition leader who became prime minister after his hand-picked presidential candidate, Bassirou Diomaye Faye, won a landslide in elections in March, said several countries have promised Senegal defense agreements.
“But this does not justify the fact that a third of the Dakar region is now occupied by foreign garrisons,” he said.
Senegal’s neighbors – military-ruled Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger – have all turned to Russia for security assistance after expelling French troops. The three West African nations have accused the former colonial power of internal meddling and failing to tackle jihadist insurgencies in the Sahel region after more than a decade of operations.
Ouagadougou, Bamako, and Niamey have also formed an alliance of Sahel states and jointly announced in January their exit from the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS). The military authorities accused the 15-nation regional bloc, which has long pressed them to restore democratic rule, of serving foreign interests and posing a threat to their countries.
In his speech, Sonko declared that Senegal would deepen relations with the coup-installed governments in Mali, Burkina Faso, and Niger.

Iranian President Raisi's Helicopter Goes Down in Remote Area, Rescuers Trying to Reach Site
There are breaking reports that Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi has been in a helicopter crash in a remote northern area of the country and that rescuers are trying to reach him and his crew.
State media is currently calling it a "hard landing"—suggesting that the president is alive and well, however no other details on the precise nature of the helicopter incident have been revealed.
What is known is that Raisi's helicopter went down while in the country's East Azerbaijan province and that it happened near the border city of Jolfa, and up to three helicopters total made up the air convoy at the time.
State-run IRNA news agency indicated that among the officials aboard the aircraft included Iran’s Foreign Minister Hossein Amirabdollahian.
The Associated Press has quoted at least one Iranian official to say it was a "crash" and that there's an urgent rescue mission currently underway in a forested area:
It appears Raisi was traveling in connection with a trip to Azerbaijan earlier in the day, where he had overseen the inauguration of a dam with Azerbaijan’s President Ilham Aliyev this morning. Iran’s semi-official Tasnim news agency has stated on X Sunday (May 19):

In her letter, she accuses Joe Biden of using Jewish people to justify US support for the mass killing of Palestinians and says the US president “has the blood of innocent people on his hands.”
Call asserts that Washington has long enabled “Israeli war crimes and the status quo of apartheid and occupation,” highlighting that Biden has the power to end the suffering of civilians in Gaza.
“The President has the power to call for a lasting cease-fire, to stop sending weapons to Israel, and to condition aid. The US has used nearly no leverage throughout the last eight months to hold Israel accountable,” she said.
...“He is making Jews the face of the American war machine. And that is so deeply wrong,” Call said, noting that her ancestors were killed by “state-sponsored violence.”
Her resignation coincided with the 76th anniversary of the Nakba, or catastrophe, a day that commemorates the ethnic cleansing of hundreds of thousands of Palestinians at the hands of Zionist paramilitaries in 1948.
Call is at least the fifth mid- or senior-level government staffer to resign in protest of the White House’s military and diplomatic support of the genocide in Gaza and is the second political appointee to do so after an education department official of Palestinian heritage resigned in January.

China's Military Shows Off Machine Gun-Equipped Robot 'Dogs of War' in Cambodia
On Thursday (May 16), China's military showed off its machine gun-equipped robot battle “dogs” at the start of its biggest ever drills with Cambodian forces.
More than 2,000 troops, including 760 Chinese military personnel, are taking part in the drills at a remote training center in central Kampong Chhnang Province and at sea off Preah Sihanouk Province.
The 15-day exercise, dubbed Golden Dragon, also involves 14 warships—three from China—two helicopters and 69 armored vehicles and tanks, and includes live-fire, anti-terrorism and humanitarian rescue drills.
The hardware on show included the so-called “robodogs”—remote-controlled four-legged robots with automatic rifles mounted on their backs.
Opening the exercises, Cambodian armed forces commander-in-chief Vong Pisen said that they would “enhance the capabilities” of the two armies in the fight against terrorism.

BRICS Members Determined to Ditch Dollar in Trade Transactions: Iran Diplomat
Iran says member countries of the BRICS group of emerging economies are resolute in pursuing efforts to ditch the US dollar in trade and economic transactions.
Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister Ali Bagheri Kani made the remarks on Saturday while speaking to reporters on the sidelines of the 15th International Economic Forum "Russia-Islamic World: KazanForum 2024" in Kazan, the Republic of Tatarstan.
He said the BRICS members are seriously determined to reduce dependence on the US dollar but they need to develop the necessary infrastructures in various fields to make that happen.
He added that experts of the BRICS states are holding constant consultations to establish mechanisms for achieving the de-dollarization objective of the group.
BRICS consists of Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa. The group accounts for 42 percent of the global population and about 27 percent of both the world's land area and the world’s economy.

Cracks Deepen in Israel as Opposition Head Issues ‘Ultimatum’ to Netanyahu
War minister Benny Gantz is threatening to leave the government if the Israeli prime minister does not articulate a plan to win the war and in Gaza
Israeli War cabinet minister Benny Gantz issued an ultimatum in a speech on 18 May, threatening to abandon Benjamin Netanyahu’s ruling coalition if the Israeli prime minister fails to present a clear plan for how Gaza will be ruled should Hamas be defeated in the current war.
In his speech, Gantz criticized Netanyahu’s management of the war, saying the army should have launched the ongoing invasion of Rafah months ago in defiance of international warnings that such an invasion would kill and displace vast numbers of Gaza civilians already on the brink of starvation.
“A war is only won with a clear and realistic strategic compass,” said Gantz, who brought his National Unity party into the governing coalition after the start of the war on 7 October....
Gantz warned that he will abandon the ruling coalition if Netanyahu does not implement a clear plan to win the war by 8 June.
Gantz demanded that Netanyahu work to accomplish six strategic goals:
Bring home the roughly 100 Israeli captives still held by Hamas in Gaza.
Topple Hamas, demilitarize Gaza, and gain Israeli security control over the strip.
Create an international civilian governance mechanism for Gaza, including US, European, Arab, and Palestinian elements, while excluding Hamas and the Palestinian Authority (PA).
Return settlers to their homes in the north and southwest of Israel who have been evacuated due to the wars with Hezbollah and Hamas, respectively.
Advance normalization with Saudi Arabia.
Pass legislation requiring Haredi (ultra-Orthodox) Jews to serve in the army.
In his speech, Gantz vowed to “go after Hamas and all our enemies in every situation and everywhere and at all times” and that “we will not allow any outside power, friendly or hostile, to impose a Palestinian state on us.”
“But if you choose the path of the zealots and lead the whole state into the abyss, we will be forced to leave the government,” he warned, referring to Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich and National Security Minister Itamar Ben Gvir.
Netanyahu relies on the support of the two Jewish supremacist ministers to keep his coalition intact. Both have called for the destruction of Gaza, the expulsion of Palestinians from the enclave, and the building of Jewish settlements there...
Gantz’s demands would mean “an end to the war and defeat for Israel, abandoning the majority of the hostages, leaving Hamas in power, and creating a Palestinian state,” Netanyahu claimed.
In response, Gantz issued a separate statement reiterating his opposition to a Palestinian state.
National Security Minister Ben Gvir accused Gantz of being “a small leader with large eyes” and that since he joined the government, he has “mainly been involved in attempts to dismantle it.”
Finance Minister Smotrich said the country “will win with Gantz or without him.”
Amid growing calls by far-right lawmakers to establish Jewish settlements in Gaza, Smotrich urged Netanyahu “to make a strategic decision on full Israeli control of Gaza,” which Gallant explicitly said he would not allow during his remarks earlier in the week.

“But if you choose the path of the zealots and lead the whole state into the abyss, we will be forced to leave the government,” he warned, referring to Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich and National Security Minister Itamar Ben Gvir.
Netanyahu relies on the support of the two Jewish supremacist ministers to keep his coalition intact. Both have called for the destruction of Gaza, the expulsion of Palestinians from the enclave, and the building of Jewish settlements there...
Gantz’s demands would mean “an end to the war and defeat for Israel, abandoning the majority of the hostages, leaving Hamas in power, and creating a Palestinian state,” Netanyahu claimed.
In response, Gantz issued a separate statement reiterating his opposition to a Palestinian state.
National Security Minister Ben Gvir accused Gantz of being “a small leader with large eyes” and that since he joined the government, he has “mainly been involved in attempts to dismantle it.”
Finance Minister Smotrich said the country “will win with Gantz or without him.”
Amid growing calls by far-right lawmakers to establish Jewish settlements in Gaza, Smotrich urged Netanyahu “to make a strategic decision on full Israeli control of Gaza,” which Gallant explicitly said he would not allow during his remarks earlier in the week.

🚨BREAKING: ICC Requests Arrest Warrants for Netanyahu, Hamas Leaders Over ‘War Crimes
An International Criminal Court prosecutor announced Monday that he has filed applications for arrest warrants against Israel Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, Defense Minister Yoav Gallant and Hamas leaders for allegedly committing "war crimes" during the conflict in Gaza.
Prosecutor Karim Khan said in a statement that based on evidence collected and examined by his office, he has "reasonable grounds" to believe Netanyahu and Gallant "bear criminal responsibility for... war crimes and crimes against humanity committed on the territory of the State of Palestine."
He said those alleged crimes include "starvation of civilians as a method of warfare" and "intentionally directing attacks against a civilian population."

Three Americans are accused of being involved in a failed coup attempt in Congo that left multiple people dead.
According to the Democratic Republic of Congo military, they stopped an attempted coup near the presidential palace.
Among the 50 people who were involved were three Americans who have been arrested.
A passport for one of these Americans is now spreading online, a 36-year-old U.S. citizen born in Maryland. (WaPo)

Belgium and Hungary are leading the way in launching digital ID wallets ahead of EU’s eIDAS (“electronic identification and trust services”) 2.0 regulation and EUDI Wallet coming into force later this month.
In Belgium, the MyGov.be app, covering all of the country’s federal public services, was launched on Tuesday, with the government promoting the digital identity as “simplifying” the use of its services, and “making life easier.”
In other words, the authorities there are playing the convenience card – while downplaying the risks that come with this type of centralization of people’s identities.
The wallet, via “eBox” mailbox, gives access to government-issued documents, as well as 683 services, identity data, Covid vaccination records, and more.
However, the success of the scheme is by no means guaranteed – on the one hand it is not mandatory, so people are free to decide not to use it.
Judging by an opinion poll Deloitte carried out last year, “71 percent of Belgians do not want a digital ID on their phone,” reports say, adding that the same survey showed that 79 percent “do not want a mobile driver’s license, while half refuse to fully digitize their IDs.”
“Ease of use” is also how digital ID is pushed in Hungary, where the appropriate app will be made available for download as soon as this week, while the service will be fully operational from September.
Enthusiastic reports about this development describe the digital ID program as “innovative,” “handy” and “saving costs.”
At the same time, putting all of a person’s data in one place and storing it in the cloud is advertised as something positive, instead of what opponents consider as scary – from the security standpoint alone.
The operation is centralized via Hungary’s Digital Citizenship Program. Wallet users will have all their administrative, etc., documents in that one place, plus a digital mailbox, their vaccine passport, and can rely on a pan-EU electronic signature, while electric payments will be “fully integrated.”
Hungary’s digital identity scheme uses biometric data obtained through facial recognition to match a user’s face “against a government database.”
Meanwhile, some security researchers in other EU countries are warning that as many as 75 percent of what are described as high-risk organizations (healthcare, banking, air travel…) “do not use the strongest verification method.”

U.S. President Joe Biden and Secretary of State Antony Blinken released statements on Monday (May 20) “fundamentally” rejecting the announcement from the chief prosecutor of the International Criminal Court (ICC) about arrest warrants for top Israeli officials along with Hamas terrorists.
“We reject the Prosecutor’s equivalence of Israel with Hamas,” Blinken wrote.
Blinken called the arrest warrant announcement “shameful” for equating Israel and Hamas.
“Hamas is a brutal terrorist organization that carried out the worst massacre of Jews since the Holocaust and is still holding dozens of innocent people hostage, including Americans,” Blinken wrote.
In the president’s statement, he echoed the point about creating a dangerous “equivalence” between Israel and Hamas.
“The ICC prosecutor’s application for arrest warrants against Israeli leaders is outrageous,” Biden wrote. “And let me be clear: there is no equivalence between Israel and Hamas. We will always stand with Israel against threats against its security.”
Blinken said the ICC has “no jurisdiction over this matter.”
“Fundamentally, this does nothing to help, and could jeopardize, ongoing efforts to reach a ceasefire agreement that would get hostages out and surge humanitarian assistance in, which are the goals of the United States continues to pursue relentlessly,” he wrote.
