Billionaire investor Ray Dalio believes the chances of a second American Civil War stand better than one out of three and is urging investors to move part of their assets out of the country.
Dalio, who founded the world’s largest hedge fund Bridgewater Associates before relinquishing control in September 2022, believes this year’s presidential election between incumbent Joe Biden and challenger Donald Trump is the most important one of his lifetime and be serve as a litmus test that determines whether risks spiral out of control.
“We are now on the brink,” he told the Financial Times in an interview published on Thursday (May 16), estimating the probability of strife erupting at somewhere between 35% to 40%.

Biden's Spin on Marijuana's Rescheduling Exaggerates Its Practical Impact
In practical terms, the two main benefits of moving marijuana to Schedule III are fewer regulatory barriers to medical research and a financial boon to state-licensed cannabis suppliers, who will no longer be barred from deducting standard business expenses when they file their federal tax returns. But when Biden calls it "an important move toward reversing longstanding inequities" and links it to "righting [the] wrongs" suffered by cannabis consumers, he is promising more than rescheduling can possibly deliver.
Although Biden promised to "decriminalize the use of cannabis" during his 2020 campaign, rescheduling does not do that. Nor do the pardons he touts. Despite those two moves, low-level marijuana possession will remain a federal offense punishable by a minimum $1,000 fine and up to a year in jail. Only Congress can change that. Biden has invested little, if any, effort in urging it to do so, and he opposes outright federal legalization based on "gateway drug" concerns that pot prohibitionists have been voicing since the 1950s.
Neither rescheduling nor pardons will remove the unfair "barriers" that Biden decries. Although Biden claims he is "expunging thousands of convictions," that is not true, since pardons do not entail expungement. Nor do pardons eliminate the various legal disabilities associated with marijuana convictions, cannabis consumption, or participation in the cannabis industry, which include loss of Second Amendment rights (a policy that Biden defends) and ineligibility for admission, legal residence, and citizenship under immigration law.
As his pardons reflect, Biden's concern about unjust incarceration is curiously limited. Because those pardons did not apply to people convicted of growing or selling marijuana, they did not free a single federal prisoner. Neither will rescheduling.

Germany Deports 7 Ukrainian Soldiers for Wearing Nazi Symbols
Germany deported seven Ukrainian soldiers who were training in the country on Thursday (May 16) over their use of Nazi symbols, Kommersant reported. According to the report, the training of the Ukrainian soldiers was immediately halted after some were found to be wearing Nazi symbols.
German authorities announced that all Ukrainian military personnel arriving for training in Germany will now be explicitly instructed that it is prohibited to display Nazi symbols.
The use of Nazi symbols is banned in both Germany and Russia. Russia has condemned Western support for Ukraine, including the training of its soldiers.

An increase in cases involving the more lethal strain of the monkeypox virus—broken into two genetically distinct groups called clades—“raises concerns” the virus could spread to other countries, according to the CDC, which called for “coordinated, urgent global action” to contain the virus.
The Clade I virus detected in the DRC causes more severe illness and results in more deaths than the Clade II virus that caused a global outbreak in 2022: Some 1.4% to 10% or more of Clade I cases end in death, compared to just 0.1% to 3.6% for Clade II, which killed nearly 60 Americans, the CDC said.
Since 2023, the DRC has reported an “unprecedented number” of suspected Clade I virus cases, according to the CDC, which previously warned of cases in surrounding Central African countries.
The global outbreak in 2022 primarily affected gay and bisexual men and other men who have sex with men, but in two DRC-based outbreaks of Clade I, the virus was reported among men who have sex with men and both male and female sex workers, the CDC said.

Spain says it does not want to contribute to Israel's genocidal war in Gaza
Spain will not authorize ships carrying weapons for Israel to call at its ports, Foreign Minister Jose Manuel Albares said on 17 May, because Spain does not “want to contribute to war” in Gaza.
Albares said the refusal was consistent with the government’s decision not to grant weapon export licenses to Israel since 7 October.
The announcement came after Spanish Transport Minister Oscar Puente confirmed in a social media post his country’s refusal to allow a ship carrying weapons to Israel to dock at the port of Cartagena in southeast Spain.
The Marian Danica, which was carrying approximately 27 tons of explosive materials from the Indian city of Madras to Israel, requested permission to arrive in Cartagena on 21 May, Spanish newspaper El Pais reported.
The Spanish government does not wish to contribute to Israel’s ongoing war and siege on Gaza, which is widely viewed as a genocide, in part due to pressure from the far left parliamentary block, Sumar, a minority partner in Spain’s ruling socialist coalition.
Israeli political leaders have expressed their desire to eradicate Gaza and its population of 2.3 million people to make way for Jewish settlement of the enclave.
“There are no half measures,” Finance Minister Smotrich said on 30 April, according to Israeli newspaper Haaretz.
“Rafah, Deir Al-Balah, Nuseirat – total annihilation. ‘You will blot out the remembrance of Amalek from under heaven’ – there’s no place under heaven.”

Israel to End Turkiye Free Trade Deal, Impose ‘100 Percent Tariff’ on Imports
Ankara recently imposed an embargo on Israeli trade to protest the genocide in Gaza
The Israeli finance ministry announced on 16 May the country would abolish its free trade agreement with Turkiye and levy a 100 percent tariff on all imports in response to a trade embargo imposed by Ankara earlier this month.
“[Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan's] announcement of the stoppage of imports to Israel constitutes a declaration of an economic boycott and a serious violation of international trade agreements to which Turkiye has committed,” Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich said in a statement.
He added that the Israeli decision would last as long as Erdogan remained in power.
“If at the end of Erdogan's term the citizens of Turkiye elect a leader who is sane and not a hater of Israel, it would be possible to return the trade route with Turkiye,” the ultranationalist official stressed.
The statement also said that the Israeli Finance, Economy, and Foreign Ministries would take steps to strengthen the country's manufacturing sector while diversifying sources of import to reduce their dependency on their long-time ally.
Earlier this month, Ankara announced an official halt to all trade with Israel in protest to the genocide unfolding in Gaza, building upon the decision in April to restrict some exports.
Nevertheless, days later, the Turkish government issued temporary approval for the renewed supply of construction materials to Tel Aviv.
Turkiye and Israel signed a free trade agreement in 1996 that mutually exempted both countries from customs duties on industrial product imports.
According to data from the Turkish Exporters Assembly (TIM), Turkish exports to Israel expanded five-fold from $1.4 billion in the early 2000s to $5.1 billion in 2023. Moreover, Turkiye is among the top four states for Israeli imports.
Data from the TUIK shows that Turkiye exported $105,000 worth of weapon parts to Israel last October and that in 2023, arms exports amounted to $823,112. This included firearms and accessories, as well as firearm components.
