CoinDesk Opinion: A CBDC Alternative to SWIFT?
There are more ongoing cross-border CBDC trials with cute names than one can possibly keep track of (such as Cedar, Icebreaker, Jasper, Mariana and many more). But one stands out: the mBridge project.
Why? For the following reasons:
- It involves 23 central banks, including the BIS (the official organization for central banks)
- It is designed to bypass the US dollar-based global financial system
- It is almost ready to go live
...mBridge is set to become the first functioning blockchain-based payment platform involving official entities. Its nucleus is in Asia, but organizations from all continents are also involved. And while it is unlikely to knock the dollar off its global reserve currency perch, it could end up impacting international flows, trade agreements and the power of sanctions.

The Coindesk contributor here trying to positively brand the cross-border CBDC platform as sanction resistant feels like propaganda to make it sound like a liberating technology, when CBDCs are *not*]
..Until recently, mBridge was running on a proprietary blockchain based on Ethereum’s Solidity language and developed “by central banks for central banks”, unlike other initiatives that run on blockchains built by third parties. A couple of weeks ago, Chinese press reported that mBridge was transitioning to the Dashing protocol, which was developed by the PBoC’s Digital Currency Research Institute and Tsinghua University (affiliated with and funded by the Ministry of Education of China, and President Xi Jinping’s alma mater)...
This is significant in that it highlights just how much mBridge is a Chinese project, with international add-ons. China is the main trading partner for all the other key participants, and the UAE has been making moves to also deepen its investment and military relationship with the region. The UAE central bank representative on the project, Shu-Pui Li, spent 17 years at the HKMA. And the CEO of the UAE’s principal sovereign wealth fund is also the Presidential Special Envoy to China...
...The mBridge project is much more than a few organizations tinkering with tokens and addresses. The project has committees focused on key issues such as the legal framework, the policy implications, governance, redemption terms, ownership rights, AML compliance. It is leagues ahead of most other cross-border investigations...
...China, on the other hand, has long been working to expand its economic reach beyond its borders – with smoother and broader trade comes greater global influence. Throw in a growing number of countries struggling to obtain enough dollars to pay for imports, and you get a simmering and widespread demand for an alternative. Countries with geopolitical grievances with the U.S. have strong reason to think the current system could become even more weaponized.
There is a chance mBridge is not that alternative. China’s heavy influence in the group may deter some. And even if not, it’s possible that it doesn’t get much traction. SWIFT has over 11,000 affiliated banks. That kind of market penetration will be extremely hard to dislodge...But even if the use remains geographically limited to China and its main trading partners, that’s still potentially a lot of volume. And China already has a functioning CBDC that could make the initial launch smoother.

In UN Talks for a Global Plastic Treaty, Delegates to Face Off Over Production Limits
As the world's nations enter another round of talks this week on creating a first-ever treaty to contain plastic pollution, officials are bracing for tough negotiations over whether to limit the amount of plastic being produced or just to focus on the management of waste.
Working with a document called a "zero draft" that lists possible policies and actions to consider, national delegates to the weeklong meeting in Nairobi, Kenya, will be debating which of those options to include in what eventually would become a legally binding treaty by the end of 2024, officials involved in the negotiations said.

New York Post columnist Miranda Devine told Fox News' Maria Bartiromo on Sunday that Republican Rep. James Comer's subpoenas for Hunter and James Biden are ratcheting the probe to a "very aggressive level."
"I think this is the next phase. The subpoenas that James Comer signed last week and the requests for various associates and family members of the Bidens to come in for transcribed interviews is really notching it up to a very aggressive level. And this is why you see Hunter Biden's lawyer panicking, writing to the speaker, Mike Johnson, and saying, ‘call your dogs off.’ This is why you're seeing hit jobs on James Comer spreading out through the so-called prestige media," she said.
Devine said the Bidens know that Comer "has the receipts."
"And one by one, he'll be wrapping up these various Biden family members, including Hunter and James Biden," she said, adding that Comer also had his eyes on one of President Biden's donors.
"It's alarming to me that Democrats are trying to deny what we have learned from the House Oversight Committee. Do you think they're just trying to support their guy or is it partly because the media, they know will give them a pass by not reporting any of this?" Bartiromo asked.
Devine said it was both, and said that there were a lot of people "compromised by the fact that they've covered up for the Biden family."
"So many people in the DOJ, in the FBI, in the CIA, and throughout Joe's vice presidency, it was evident, and we now know there were more than two dozen complaints [that] came into the DOJ from all sorts of sources about Joe Biden's potential corruption, and they were all ignored and buried and suppressed," Devine said.

Axios reports that Lloyd Austin 'expressed concern' about the fighting with Hezbollah in a Saturday phone call with Yoav Gallant
Some members of the Biden administration are concerned that Israel is looking to provoke Hezbollah as a pretext for a wider war in Lebanon that could draw in the US, Axios reported on Sunday.
Since the October 7 Hamas attack on southern Israel, Hezbollah and Israel have been fighting across the Lebanon-Israel border, including a November 5 Israeli airstrike that killed a woman and three children. The skirmishes have killed over 60 Hezbollah fighters, several Lebanese civilians, and about 10 Israeli soldiers and civilians.
The Axios report said Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin “expressed concern” about the fighting on the border in a Saturday call with his Israeli counterpart, Yoav Gallant. The White House requested Austin relay the message due to “growing anxiety” that Israel’s military action is exacerbating tensions on the border.
The Pentagon’s readout of the call said Austin “emphasized the need to contain the conflict to Gaza and avoid regional escalation,” but it did not specifically mention Lebanon. Sources told Axios Austin asked for clarification about Israeli airstrikes in Lebanon and asked what steps would be taken to avoid a regional war.

Pentagon UFO Chief Resigns After Warning Recent Sightings Could be Foreign Powers — or Aliens
The Pentagon’s UFO chief will step down next month after saying that several reported sightings of objects flying through the sky over the US are either the work of foreign nations or aliens, warning that the latter would be the preferred scenario.
Sean Kirkpatrick, head of the All-domain Anomaly Resolution Office (AARO), announced his plans to leave last week after heading the department for 18 months, a job he deferred his retirement for in hopes of finding evidence of extraterrestrials.
After investigating more than 800 cases during his brief stint as director, Kirkpatrick warned of the presence of UFOs, and although there has yet to be any hard evidence of aliens, he said the alternative was much more frightening
