Iran Will Build Nuclear Bomb if Israel Threatens Existence, Supreme Leader’s Advisor Says

Iran will change its nuclear doctrine if Israel threatens its existence, an adviser to Iran's supreme leader said, the latest comment by an Iranian official that raises questions about what Tehran says is its peaceful nuclear program.

Tehran has always said it had no plans to obtain nuclear weapons. Western governments suspect that it wants nuclear technology to build a bomb; its nuclear program has been at the centre of a long-running dispute that has led to sanctions.

In April, in the middle of a tense standoff with Israel, which is widely believed to have nuclear weapons, a senior Iranian Revolutionary Guards commander also said Israeli threats could prompt Iran to change its nuclear doctrine.

"We have no decision to build a nuclear bomb but should Iran's existence be threatened, there will be no choice but to change our military doctrine," Kamal Kharrazi, an adviser to Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, was reported as saying by Iran's Student News Network on Thursday (May 9).

In 2022, the same adviser said Iran was technically capable of making a nuclear bomb but had not yet decided whether to build one.

Two More Palestinians Killed By Aid Drops on Gaza

Two more Palestinians were killed by airdrops of aid in Gaza this week when a parachute failed, and a pallet smashed into a warehouse, prompting the head of Gaza’s Government Media Office to renew his call for an end to the practice.

Several countries, including the US, Jordan, and the UK, have been dropping pallets of aid on Gaza as Israel is restricting humanitarian assistance through border crossings.

According to Gaza’s Media Office, at least 21 Palestinians have been killed during aid drops, including 12 who drowned while trying to retrieve aid that went into the sea, eight who were killed by falling pallets or stampedes, and one who was shot by Israeli forces.

Last month, a 13-year-old Palestinian boy who survived an Israeli airstrike in November was killed by an aid drop.

Despite imposing mask and vaccine mandates, and forcibly closing down businesses during "Covid", former New York governor Andrew Cuomo now claims "it was really all voluntary".

"Government had no capacity to enforce any of this... If [people had] said 'I'm not wearing a mask', there was nothing I could do about it."

"It was extraordinary, when you think about it, that society acted with that uniformity voluntarily, because I had no enforcement capacity."

In a sense he is right, though. If enough people had refused to comply with lockdowns, mask mandates, vaccine mandates and the closing down of businesses, there wouldn't have been enough enforcement goons to make any of it enforceable.

A lesson for next time for the people who complied last time.

Barclays Increases Investment in Israeli Arms Firms: Report

According to reports, Barclays invested $2.4 billion in Israeli arms firms despite shareholder pressure to divest

According to a report by a collective of activist organizations, Barclays, one of the UK's largest banks, has ramped up its investment in firms that provide arms and military technology to Israel.

Activist groups such as the Palestine Solidarity Campaign (PSC), Campaign Against Arms Trade (CAAT), and War on Want were behind the investigation. The British multinational bank continues to bolster its investments in Israeli arms trade despite several shareholders pushing for mass divestment.

The reports indicate that Barclays has invested $2.4 billion in the shares of companies directly complicit in producing weapons and technology used by the Israeli army against Palestinians in the wake of their wide-scale assault on the Gaza Strip.

The report indicates that an additional $7.66 billion has been allocated to firms engaged in the arms trade with Israel through loans and underwritings.

Researchers said the figures amounted to a 55 percent increase in shareholdings since 2022 and a 54.5 percent increase in loans and underwritings since the same year.

On 8 May, dozens of pro-Palestine demonstrators assembled outside the headquarters of Barclays Bank in London, as the demanded the bank to end “Its complicity in Israel's attack on Palestinians” by severing financial ties with arms companies that sell weapons to Tel Aviv.

The weapons firms that Barclays had invested in include Israeli drone producer Elbit Systems, BAE Systems, Raytheon, and General Dynamics, a Washington-based arms firm responsible for the production of warplane parts.

Earlier this week, around 50 percent of the artists scheduled to play at Brighton-based The Great Escape festival insisted that it cut its sponsorship with Barclays in solidarity with Palestine.

Senate Bill Seeks to Place Campus Protesters on No-Fly List

A bill introduced in the Senate by two Republicans seeks to place campus protesters on a no-fly list.

According to the legislation posted on Senator Marsha Blackburn’s website on Wednesday (May 8), S.4274 will require the US government to place the campus protesters on a no-fly list. A press release from Blackburn and her Republican colleague Roger Marshall explains, “The No Flights For Terrorists Act, would put any individual including: students, faculty, professors, or paid agitators, on the No-Fly List if they have called for violence against Jewish people, pledged allegiance to US-designated Foreign Terrorist Organizations, or have been subject to disciplinary action by the institution of higher education related to such action.”

It adds, “This legislative action comes in response to the continued antisemitic, pro-Hamas protests and encampments that have wreaked violence and chaos on college campuses nationwide.” Blackburn has also called for campus protesters to have their student loans revoked and supports a separate bill that would prevent the activists from having federal student loans relieved.

Sen. Marshall said, “Hamas terrorist sympathizers don’t just hate Israel, they hate America and everything we stand for. These radical Marxists who are doing Hamas’ bidding across the country on college campuses, threatening the safety of our Jewish students and communities, should be treated the same way we treat the terrorist organization.”

Russia Launches Surprise Offensive In Kharkiv, Aims to Extend Border 10km Deep Into Ukraine

Following several more cross-border attacks from Ukraine, including direct drone hits on Russian oil facilities over the past 48 hours, Russian forces have launched a surprise ground offensive which seeks to break through front lines in the northeastern Kharkiv border region on Friday (May 10).

"Russia launched a new wave of counteroffensive actions... Ukraine met them there with our troops, brigades, and artillery," Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky confirmed of the new action in a briefing. "Now there is a fierce battle underway."

Civilians have also been witnessed fleeing border areas in droves as heavy fighting ensues. Already Moscow forces have penetrated at least 1 kilometer deep in what's being described as an effort to create a larger 'buffer zone' in order to help prevent Ukrainian attacks from reaching Russian territory.

Ukraine's defense ministry said that the new offensive began at 5am local time with armored vehicles leading the charge of infantry troops in this major effort to effectively push the border itself deeper into Ukraine territory.

Israeli Troops Amass Near Rafah as Officials Tell Biden ‘We Cannot Be Subdued’

Tel Aviv has remained steadfast with its plan to raid the city of Rafah, where over one million Palestinians remain trapped

Israeli tanks and troops amassed on the outskirts of Gaza's southernmost city of Rafah on 9 May, opening fire on the severely overcrowded city mere hours after US President Joe Biden declared he would not provide weapons for the planned Israeli ground invasion...

Hundreds of Palestinians have been killed in Rafah over recent weeks, as Israeli jets have continuously bombed the city, including illegal deployments of white phosphorus munitions on civilian areas.

As the army continued to gather outside Rafah, top Israeli officials fired back against Biden's announcement....

For his part, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu took to social media to post an excerpt from a speech he gave earlier this week in occupied Jerusalem when he insisted “Israel will stand alone.”

“Today, we again confront enemies bent on our destruction … I say to the leaders of the world – no amount of pressure, no decision from any international forum, will stop Israel from defending itself," the premier says in the video, stressing: “If Israel is forced to stand alone, Israel will stand alone.”

Earlier in the day, Biden told CNN that his government would not support or provide weapons for an expanded Israeli assault on Rafah.

“I’ve made it clear to Bibi and the war cabinet: They’re not going to get our support if they go [into] these population centers,” Biden told the US news outlet, adding: “I made it clear that if they go into Rafah… I’m not supplying the weapons that have been used historically to deal with Rafah, to deal with the cities, to deal with that problem.”

Nevertheless, the US leader stressed his government is “not walking away from Israel’s security. We’re walking away from Israel’s ability to wage war in [populated] areas.”

Biden also claimed that Israel has “not yet” crossed the “red line” of conduct in Gaza despite killing nearly 40,000 people – over a third of whom were children.

Israel Likely Violated Intl Law in Gaza, ‘No Evidence’ To Stop Arms Transfers: White House

In a highly contradictory report, Washington stopped short of making an assessment that could threaten the delivery of weapons fueling the genocide of Palestinians in Gaza

The White House on 10 May issued a highly anticipated report on Israel's conduct during its genocidal war in Gaza, saying it is “reasonable to assess” Tel Aviv used US-provided weapons in ways that are “inconsistent” with international law but stopping short of identifying violations that would put an end to the ongoing military aid.

“It is reasonable to assess that defense articles covered under [national security memorandum] NSM-20 have been used by Israeli security forces since October 7 in instances inconsistent with its IHL [international humanitarian law] obligations or with established best practices for mitigating civilian harm,” the report, drafted by the State Department, says.

The White House issued NSM-20 in February, calling on Israel and other countries receiving military aid to provide written assurances that all US-supplied weapons were used “in a manner consistent with international law.”

The report also stipulates that Washington found “credible and reliable” Israeli assurances that the country will use US weapons in accordance with international humanitarian law.

"[Israel has] the knowledge, experience, and tools to implement best practices for mitigating civilian harm in its military operations," the report says, noting, however, that results in the field, “including high levels of civilian casualties, raise substantial questions.”

The highly contradictory report also points to “limitations” regarding US access to evidence from Israel, saying officials provided some information "on request" about specific incidents but stressing that “more details are needed.”

"Although we have gained insight into Israel’s procedures and rules, we do not have complete information on how these processes are implemented," the report said. “Israel has not shared complete information to verify [IHL violations].”

Washington's subdued assessment of Israel's campaign of genocide comes as the death in Gaza has surpassed 35,000 – more than two-thirds of whom are women and children – with over 10,000 Palestinians still missing across the strip and hundreds still being found inside mass graves.

Furthermore, it follows a new Israeli blockade on humanitarian aid deliveries, as the head of the World Food Programme (WFP) has declared a “full-blown famine” in the northern part of the narrow enclave.
