Netanyahu Implored Qataris to Continue Funding Hamas in 2018 Letter
As Israel’s war on Palestinians living in the besieged Gaza Strip continues escalating, a secret 2018 letter penned by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to the leadership in Doha exposes Tel Aviv’s diplomatic efforts to ensure tens of millions of dollars would reach Hamas every month. The decades-long policy of Netanyahu’s far-right Likud Party to directly and indirectly fund Hamas has been well documented by the US and Israeli press.
In the letter, only seen by a handful of people, Netanyahu implored the Qatari government to send Hamas another major cash infusion. According to Ynet, an Israeli news outlet, Qatari funding for Hamas between 2007 and 2014 was conducted largely without international oversight. But following Israel’s 2014 war on Gaza, the transfers were carried out with a new system worked out by the US, Israel, the UN, and Qatar, ensuring Hamas was provided with $30 million per month ostensibly to cover fuel costs, welfare payments for the needy, as well as government salaries.
Until 2018, the payments were cleared with Israel and the illegally occupied West Bank’s Palestinian Authority (PA). The PA is trained and backed by Tel Aviv, London, and Washington. Essentially trustees in an Israeli prison, the PA is not a sovereign state by any means.
Nevertheless, Dr. Udi Levi, the Mossad official charged with cracking down on the funding of terrorism until 2016, told Ynet “The PA said it would no longer agree to fund Hamas and rather than let the terror group collapse, Israel decided on an alternative route for its funding.”
He continued, “That was part of Israel’s policy to buy quiet. Hamas demanded that the $30 million per month would be delivered directly to the ruling faction. It was naïve to believe Hamas would provide the money to the population in Gaza.”
Levi goes on to explain that Doha was reluctant to fund Hamas as well, saying, “In 2018 Qatar was concerned that funding Hamas – which had been designated a terror organization – would create problems with international institutions.”..
Subsequently, Treasury Secretary Steve Mnuchin “agreed to a request from Netanyahu and sent an additional letter to Doha, this time from Washington, in effect, ensuring Qatar that the funding of Hamas would not be considered funding terror.”
...The long-standing policy of backing Hamas was part of a larger effort by Netanyahu and Likud to divide the Palestinians, weaken Fatah, preclude negotiations over a Palestinian state, and continue the de facto annexation of land in the West Bank with expanding illegal settlements.

Biden Says He’ll Halt Offensive Weapons to Israel If It Invades Gaza in Unprecedented First
President Biden on Wednesday (May 8) warned he would stop supplying Israel with offensive weapons like bombs and artillery shells if Israeli forces launch an invasion of Rafah, laying down a clear line amid outcry over the conflict in Gaza.
“Civilians have been killed in Gaza as a consequence of those bombs and other ways in which they go after population centers,” Biden told CNN’s Erin Burnett in an interview.
“I made it clear that if they go into Rafah—they haven’t gone in Rafah yet—if they go into Rafah, I’m not supplying the weapons that have been used historically to deal with Rafah, to deal with the cities—that deal with that problem,” Biden added.
The White House has urged Israel against sending forces into Rafah without a clear plan to evacuate civilians safely, as the war has already left tens of thousands of Palestinians dead. About a million refugees have settled in Rafah after fleeing fighting in northern Gaza.
Biden has grown increasingly frustrated with Netanyahu in private, and last month suggested in a call with the prime minister that the U.S. could reassess its support for Israel if it did not do more to protect civilians and humanitarian workers.
The U.S. reportedly paused a shipment of bombs to Israel last week over concerns of a looming full-scale invasion of Rafah. But Wednesday’s comments are the first time he has explicitly threatened to cut off the shipment of offensive weapons to the U.S. ally.

Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk divulged Thursday that NATO forces had been deployed in Ukraine, and the alliance is aiding Kiev to the greatest extent possible,

Israel Abandoning Captives To Hunt Hamas Leaders, Say Military Officers
Officers tell MEE the war has become personal for Netanyahu, who is planning a long-term presence in Gaza 'partially approved' by the US
Israel has abandoned its goals of freeing the captives in Gaza, instead seeking to establish a long-term presence with its Rafah ground offensive and pursue top Palestinian leaders, Israeli military officers have told Middle East Eye.
Speaking on condition of anonymity, three officers, one of whom is serving in Gaza, questioned Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s strategy in the ongoing war on Gaza, which has killed at least 34,800 Palestinians and failed to return captives taken by Hamas on 7 October.
One officer told MEE the government’s aims were unclear and the objective of rescuing captives and destroying Hamas had “collapsed”.
“Netanyahu's operations in Gaza are fundamentally aimed at ... hunting down Yahya Sinwar,” said the officer in Gaza, adding that the war had become “personal” for the Israeli premier.
Sinwar, Hamas’s leader in the enclave, is Israel’s number one target and has not been seen in public since the war began.
The officer told MEE that Israel’s military had become “obsessed” with Sinwar and the upper echelons of the Qassam Brigades, the armed wing of Hamas.
Last month, a Hamas official said Sinwar had visited combat zones above the ground and held deliberations with the group's leadership abroad.
Speaking to the pan-Arab news outlet Al-Arabi Al-Jadeed (or The New Arab), the Hamas official said Sinwar was not always staying in tunnels, as claimed by Israel, but also performing his duties in the field. MEE could not independently verify the reports on his whereabouts.
The military officer in Gaza said that conducting special operations targeting high-ranking individuals in a densely populated area risked making the conflict “perpetual”, and would be impossible without Israeli casualties and subsequent "retaliations" by the army.
“The army and intelligence are unable to make the right decisions in this respect,” one source said.
An officer not currently serving in Gaza said a “new phase” of the war was being planned involving a long-term military presence through special operations.
“This plan has been partially approved by the US,” the officer told MEE. “It's all part of a plan agreed upon by the two countries for a Hamas-free Gaza.”...
Captives 'No Longer of Concern' ...[Were they ever?]
“A few hostages might be exchanged. However, hostages are no longer of concern to anyone,” the source said.
Israel estimates that 128 of around 250 captives taken to Gaza during Hamas's surprise attack on Israel in October remain there, including 35 who the military says are dead. Hamas says at least 70 captives have been killed in Israeli air strikes.
Protests in Israel led by the families of captives have called on the government to end the war on Gaza and bring their loved ones home.

Sinwar, Hamas’s leader in the enclave, is Israel’s number one target and has not been seen in public since the war began.
The officer told MEE that Israel’s military had become “obsessed” with Sinwar and the upper echelons of the Qassam Brigades, the armed wing of Hamas.
Last month, a Hamas official said Sinwar had visited combat zones above the ground and held deliberations with the group's leadership abroad.
Speaking to the pan-Arab news outlet Al-Arabi Al-Jadeed (or The New Arab), the Hamas official said Sinwar was not always staying in tunnels, as claimed by Israel, but also performing his duties in the field. MEE could not independently verify the reports on his whereabouts.
The military officer in Gaza said that conducting special operations targeting high-ranking individuals in a densely populated area risked making the conflict “perpetual”, and would be impossible without Israeli casualties and subsequent "retaliations" by the army.
“The army and intelligence are unable to make the right decisions in this respect,” one source said.
An officer not currently serving in Gaza said a “new phase” of the war was being planned involving a long-term military presence through special operations.
“This plan has been partially approved by the US,” the officer told MEE. “It's all part of a plan agreed upon by the two countries for a Hamas-free Gaza.”...
Captives 'No Longer of Concern' ...[Were they ever?]
“A few hostages might be exchanged. However, hostages are no longer of concern to anyone,” the source said.
Israel estimates that 128 of around 250 captives taken to Gaza during Hamas's surprise attack on Israel in October remain there, including 35 who the military says are dead. Hamas says at least 70 captives have been killed in Israeli air strikes.
Protests in Israel led by the families of captives have called on the government to end the war on Gaza and bring their loved ones home.

Ukraine Warns Nationwide Power Outages Coming Amid 'Massive' Russian Strikes
Large-scale Russian aerial strikes on Ukraine's energy infrastructure has become an almost daily event, but Wednesday (May 8) saw a "massive" wave of Russian missiles launched on vital power grid sites, according to Ukraine authorities.
Ukraine is now warning of nationwide power cuts. "Russians have launched a new massive attack on thermal and hydroelectric power plants," the state-owned Ukrenergo energy operator announced. "There may be power cuts for household and industrial consumers across Ukraine... due to new damage to the equipment of Ukrainian power plants caused by Russian strikes."

Iran Will Build Nuclear Bomb if Israel Threatens Existence, Supreme Leader’s Advisor Says
Iran will change its nuclear doctrine if Israel threatens its existence, an adviser to Iran's supreme leader said, the latest comment by an Iranian official that raises questions about what Tehran says is its peaceful nuclear program.
Tehran has always said it had no plans to obtain nuclear weapons. Western governments suspect that it wants nuclear technology to build a bomb; its nuclear program has been at the centre of a long-running dispute that has led to sanctions.
In April, in the middle of a tense standoff with Israel, which is widely believed to have nuclear weapons, a senior Iranian Revolutionary Guards commander also said Israeli threats could prompt Iran to change its nuclear doctrine.
"We have no decision to build a nuclear bomb but should Iran's existence be threatened, there will be no choice but to change our military doctrine," Kamal Kharrazi, an adviser to Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, was reported as saying by Iran's Student News Network on Thursday (May 9).
In 2022, the same adviser said Iran was technically capable of making a nuclear bomb but had not yet decided whether to build one.

Two More Palestinians Killed By Aid Drops on Gaza
Two more Palestinians were killed by airdrops of aid in Gaza this week when a parachute failed, and a pallet smashed into a warehouse, prompting the head of Gaza’s Government Media Office to renew his call for an end to the practice.
Several countries, including the US, Jordan, and the UK, have been dropping pallets of aid on Gaza as Israel is restricting humanitarian assistance through border crossings.
According to Gaza’s Media Office, at least 21 Palestinians have been killed during aid drops, including 12 who drowned while trying to retrieve aid that went into the sea, eight who were killed by falling pallets or stampedes, and one who was shot by Israeli forces.
Last month, a 13-year-old Palestinian boy who survived an Israeli airstrike in November was killed by an aid drop.

Despite imposing mask and vaccine mandates, and forcibly closing down businesses during "Covid", former New York governor Andrew Cuomo now claims "it was really all voluntary".
"Government had no capacity to enforce any of this... If [people had] said 'I'm not wearing a mask', there was nothing I could do about it."
"It was extraordinary, when you think about it, that society acted with that uniformity voluntarily, because I had no enforcement capacity."
In a sense he is right, though. If enough people had refused to comply with lockdowns, mask mandates, vaccine mandates and the closing down of businesses, there wouldn't have been enough enforcement goons to make any of it enforceable.
A lesson for next time for the people who complied last time.

Barclays Increases Investment in Israeli Arms Firms: Report
According to reports, Barclays invested $2.4 billion in Israeli arms firms despite shareholder pressure to divest
According to a report by a collective of activist organizations, Barclays, one of the UK's largest banks, has ramped up its investment in firms that provide arms and military technology to Israel.
Activist groups such as the Palestine Solidarity Campaign (PSC), Campaign Against Arms Trade (CAAT), and War on Want were behind the investigation. The British multinational bank continues to bolster its investments in Israeli arms trade despite several shareholders pushing for mass divestment.
The reports indicate that Barclays has invested $2.4 billion in the shares of companies directly complicit in producing weapons and technology used by the Israeli army against Palestinians in the wake of their wide-scale assault on the Gaza Strip.
The report indicates that an additional $7.66 billion has been allocated to firms engaged in the arms trade with Israel through loans and underwritings.
Researchers said the figures amounted to a 55 percent increase in shareholdings since 2022 and a 54.5 percent increase in loans and underwritings since the same year.
On 8 May, dozens of pro-Palestine demonstrators assembled outside the headquarters of Barclays Bank in London, as the demanded the bank to end “Its complicity in Israel's attack on Palestinians” by severing financial ties with arms companies that sell weapons to Tel Aviv.
The weapons firms that Barclays had invested in include Israeli drone producer Elbit Systems, BAE Systems, Raytheon, and General Dynamics, a Washington-based arms firm responsible for the production of warplane parts.
Earlier this week, around 50 percent of the artists scheduled to play at Brighton-based The Great Escape festival insisted that it cut its sponsorship with Barclays in solidarity with Palestine.

Researchers said the figures amounted to a 55 percent increase in shareholdings since 2022 and a 54.5 percent increase in loans and underwritings since the same year.
On 8 May, dozens of pro-Palestine demonstrators assembled outside the headquarters of Barclays Bank in London, as the demanded the bank to end “Its complicity in Israel's attack on Palestinians” by severing financial ties with arms companies that sell weapons to Tel Aviv.
The weapons firms that Barclays had invested in include Israeli drone producer Elbit Systems, BAE Systems, Raytheon, and General Dynamics, a Washington-based arms firm responsible for the production of warplane parts.
Earlier this week, around 50 percent of the artists scheduled to play at Brighton-based The Great Escape festival insisted that it cut its sponsorship with Barclays in solidarity with Palestine.
