U.S. Confirms Russian Forces Deployed to Same Niger Airbase as American Troops

The US secretary of defence, Lloyd Austin, has confirmed Russian security forces have been deployed to the same airbase as American troops in the Nigerien capital, Niamey.

It remains unclear when the Russian troops, who have been in Niger for weeks, were deployed to Airbase 101, which is next to Diori Hamani international airport in Niamey. It is also unclear how many troops are on the ground.

“Airbase 101 where our forces [are], is a Nigerien air force base that is co-located with an international airport in the capital city. The Russians are in a separate compound and don’t have access to US forces or access to our equipment,” Austin said at a press conference in Honolulu.

Israeli Tanks Shut Down Gaza Side of Rafah Border Crossing with Egypt

An Israeli tank brigade took control Tuesday (May 7) of the Gaza Strip side of the Rafah border crossing with Egypt, authorities said, appearing to move forward with an offensive in the southern city even as cease-fire negotiations with Hamas remain on a knife's edge.

The move came after hours of whiplash in the Israel-Hamas war, with the militant group saying Monday (May 6) that it had accepted an Egyptian-Qatari mediated cease-fire proposal. Israel, however, insisted the deal didn't meet its core demands and rejected it.

Israel had already fully controlled all of Gaza's border crossings since it launched its war on Hamas seven months ago, but the tanks rolling in on Tuesday marked a significant increase in the Israeli military presence at the Rafah crossing.

Two Ukrainian Security Officials Detained Over Zelensky Assassination Plot

Two Ukrainian security officials have been detained for planning to assassinate President Volodymyr Zelensky, according to the country’s State Security Service (SBU).

Two Ukrainian government protection unit colonels have been detained and are accused of leaking classified information to Russia, the SBU said Tuesday (May 7), after it “exposed a network of agents” belonging to Russia’s state security service (FSB).

The SBU said it had “foiled” the “actively developing plans” to assassinate Zelensky.

“One of the tasks of the FSB’s agent network was to find perpetrators among the military close to the President’s security who could take the Head of State hostage and then kill him,” the SBU said.

The SBU said the assassination plans also targeted other senior Ukrainian officials, including the head of the SBU, Vasyl Maliuk, and the head of the Defence Intelligence of Ukraine, Kyrylo Budanov.

U.S. Soldier Detained in Russia, White House Confirms

A U.S. soldier was detained in Russia last week, the Army and National Security Council confirmed Monday (May 6).

On May 2, “Russian authorities in Vladivostok, Russia, detained an American Soldier on charges of criminal misconduct,” U.S. Army spokesperson Cynthia O. Smith said in a statement to The Hill.

Smith said the Russian Federation notified the State Department of the criminal detention, and the Army thereafter notified the soldier’s family.

The State Department “is providing appropriate consular support to the Soldier in Russia,” she added.

And a NSC spokesperson told The Hill that the State Department “is actively seeking consular access to this individual, who was not in Russia on behalf of or in affiliation with the U.S. government.”

“Loyal Friend”: Kevin Spacey Endorses RFK Jr. for President

Actor Kevin Spacey endorsed independent candidate Robert F. Kennedy Jr. in the race for president Monday (May 6), calling him "a formidable fighter for justice and a loyal friend."

"There's a lot I can learn from this man. When the world turned its back on me, Bobby leaned in," Spacey wrote in a post on X.

Spacey has faced wide-reaching sexual misconduct allegations since accusations against him surfaced in 2017.

Last year, Spacey, 64, was acquitted of nine sexual assault charges after a 4-week-long trial in London. He had been charged with sexual and indecent assault and causing a person to engage in penetrative sexual activity without consent after accusations by four men in Britain.

In 2019, prosecutors in Massachusetts dropped indecent assault and battery charges filed against Spacey after a man claimed the actor had groped him at a Nantucket bar. Spacey said he was innocent. His accuser also dropped a civil lawsuit.

Despite the allegations, Spacey has not been found in guilty in court.

The Twitter co-founder Jack Dorsey has left the board of Bluesky, the decentralised social network he helped start, and encouraged users to remain on his first site, now owned by Elon Musk and called 𝕏, which he described as “freedom technology.”

Dorsey confirmed he had cut ties with Bluesky on Sunday (May 5), telling a user on 𝕏 that he was no longer on the social network’s board. The announcement was apparently unexpected, since Bluesky still listed him as a board member until late on Sunday evening.

Private U.S. Security Firm to Take Control of Rafah Border Crossing: Report

Haaretz reported on Tuesday (May 7) that the US, Israel, and Egypt have agreed that control of the Rafah border crossing that connects Egypt and Gaza will be handed over to a private American security firm.

The report came after Israel captured the border crossing in an operation that was approved by the Biden administration. The private American firm was not named, but Haaretz said that it employs veterans of elite US Army units and has been employed in several Middle Eastern and African countries to guard sensitive sites.

State Department spokesman Matt Miller was asked about the report and said he wasn’t aware of any plan for Israel to transfer control of the border crossing.

Under the reported arrangement, American mercenaries would take responsibility for overseeing the border crossing, which would include monitoring goods coming into Gaza and preventing Hamas from taking control. Vital deliveries have been cut off since Israel took control of the crossing early Tuesday.

Rumble CEO Chris Pavlovski and Journalist Michael Shellenberger Testify on Brazil Censorship Demands

During a House Committee on Foreign Affairs hearing on Brazil’s censorship demands to American social media companies, Rumble CEO Chris Pavlovski, American investigative journalist Michael Shellenberger, and Brazilian investigative journalist Paulo Figueiredo highlighted the troubling censorship demands and pressure they had been subject to from countries outside the US.

In his opening statement, Pavlovski, whose company is known for its staunch support of free speech, warned that the fundamental rights of freedom of speech and freedom of expression are being threatened by government censorship demands and provided a detailed account of the censorship pressures faced by Rumble. He drew attention to the alarming requests from various countries to suppress content that, although unpopular, did not violate Rumble’s guidelines.

“We were surprised in 2022 when we received a request from the French government to block certain news sources,” Pavlvoski said. “Rather than comply, we simply disabled access to the platform in France and challenged the legality of this demand.”

He also provided details on Brazil’s escalating censorship demands: “Earlier this year, we received requests from the Brazilian government to remove certain creators from our platform. Again, the content did not violate our terms and conditions, but instead shared opinions that were ‘unpopular’ in Brazil at the time.”

Rumble again took a bold step by not complying and instead choosing to disable access in Brazil while legally contesting the demands.

He concluded his opening remarks by criticizing the US for failing to defend freedom of speech and protect American businesses...

“Every totalitarian regime that has crushed the rights of individuals, has sought to control what people can say and hear,” Pavlovski warned. “It’s never the good guys doing the censoring. If the United States won’t stand up for freedom of speech – who will?”

Israeli media reports that an Israeli businessman was murdered in Alexandria, Egypt.

An Israeli-Canadian businessman by the name of Ziv Kipper was reportedly killed by unknown gunmen in the 'Smouha' area of Alexandria, Egypt on 7 May.

Al-Arabiya news website reported that the killing was being investigated by the Egyptian Ministry of Interior as a murder, while Israel's Ynet said that the Israeli Foreign Ministry was 'looking into it.'

According to Kipper's LinkedIn, he was the CEO of O.K Group LLC, an Egyptian company that exports frozen fruits and vegetables with "the head office in Alexandria, Egypt, and offices in Ukraine and Israel.”

An Egyptian group called the 'Vanguards of Liberation – Martyr Mohammad Salah Group' (Named after the border police officer who carried out a resistance operation that killed 3 Israeli soldiers on the border in June 2023) has claimed responsibility for the killing.

The statement, which has yet to be verified, reads:

"We ... declare our responsibility for targeting the criminal Israeli agent Ziv Kipper, who uses some business activities as a cover to carry out his activities in collecting information and recruiting the weak-souled for the Mossad. This is based on precise intelligence assessment of the target's activity, which we will publish details of gradually as security conditions allow."

Martyr Mohammad Salah Group, who claimed responsibility for the killing of Israeli 'businessman' Ziv Kipper in Alexandria, posted this photo captioned:
