Civilians Ordered Out of Rafah as Israeli Military Ground Attack to Proceed

The last several hours have seen a significant escalation of the situation in the southern Gaza city of Rafah, sending Western diplomats scrambling and resulting in new threats and counterthreats between Hamas and Israeli leaders.

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) have urged many thousands of Palestinian civilians to urgently evacuate ahead of an impending ground offensive. In the overnight hours Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant told US Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin that Israel now believes it has no choice but the carry on with the major ground operation, despite it having been stalled for months.

Gallant cited that a Hamas rocket attack was carried out from Rafah, killing four Israeli soldiers. Airstrikes in eastern Rafah have already begun, and residents and refugees there are being dropped flyers—and homes are also reportedly receiving urgent messages—telling them to evacuate immediately.

"Driving through Rafah, the tension was palpable with people evacuating as rapidly as they could," a British humanitarian health workers was cited by Al Jazeera as saying.

Israel Strikes Gaza City of Rafah Shortly After Evacuation Order

Israel's military carried out airstrikes in Rafah on Monday (May 6), residents said, hours after Israel told Palestinians to evacuate parts of the southern Gaza city where more than a million people uprooted by the war have been sheltering.

Fears are growing of a full-blown assault in Rafah, long threatened by Israel, against holdouts of the Palestinian militant group Hamas as ceasefire talks in Cairo stall. Hamas official Izzat al-Rashiq said in a statement that any Israeli operation in Rafah would put the truce talks in jeopardy.

There was no immediate comment from Israel, which Hamas-affiliated Al-Aqsa TV said had targeted areas in eastern Rafah near neighbourhoods given evacuation orders.

Instructed by Arabic text messages, phone calls, and flyers to move to what the Israeli military called an "expanded humanitarian zone" around 20 km (12 miles) away, some Palestinian families began trundling away in chilly spring rain.

Iran sentences rapper Toomaj Salehi to death over 2022-23 unrest

An Iranian revolutionary court has sentenced well-known Iranian rapper Toomaj Salehi to death for charges linked to Iran's 2022-23 unrest, his lawyer told Iranian newspaper Sharq on Wednesday.

Salehi in his songs supported months of protests in Iran in 2022 sparked by the death in police custody of Mahsa Amini, a 22-year-old Kurdish Iranian woman arrested for allegedly wearing an "improper" hijab.

Salehi was initially arrested in October 2022 after making public statements in support of the nationwide protests.

He was sentenced in 2023 to six years and three months in prison, but avoided a death sentence due to a Supreme Court ruling.

"Branch One of the Revolutionary Court of (the central city of) Isfahan in an unprecedented move, did not enforce the Supreme Court's ruling .... and sentenced Salehi to the harshest punishment," his lawyer Amir Raisian told Sharq.

Iranian judiciary has not confirmed the sentence yet. Salehi has 20 days to appeal the ruling."

Hamas to Remain in Power: Netanyahu’s Hidden Motive Unveiled – Opinion by Jerusalem Post

The IDF ended the intense fighting in Gaza over two months ago. At the height of the ground invasion, about 20 brigades were in the Strip. At the beginning of April, the 98th Division left the Strip, and thus Israel completed the evacuation of about 95% of soldiers in Gaza. The hostages and Rafah were left behind, the two major lifelines of Hamas.

Immediately after October 7, Israel enjoyed enormous and complete support from the US administration and most Western governments. The obvious question is, therefore, why didn't Israel take advantage of this support in the first months of the campaign for the occupation of Rafah and the complete defeat of Hamas in the south?

Netanyahu has a collection of negative personality traits, but stupidity is not one of them. He is also very experienced in managing and indoctrinating people. Therefore, the fact that Israel ended the ground maneuver in Gaza and voluntarily dropped all the levers of pressure from October-December 2023, at a time when Hamas is far from eliminated, and the hostages are still in the tunnels, is concerning.

Netanyahu prefers a weakened Hamas that still controls Gaza, over any other entity that receives international recognition and cooperation. This is for his personal and political reasons that are not hard to comprehend.

Hamas, weakened but alive and in control of Gaza, is the key to Netanyahu's chances of allowing the status quo to remain in place, including his remaining in power.

In the interview, Bourla praised the measures as a “very good cost containment” campaign, crediting it for the “very good results” his company showed in early 2024. Pfizer is also on the verge of striking gold again with its new strategy, he said.

“Oncology, it is our new Covid,” the Pfizer CEO said. “We did what we did with Covid. We are very proud to have saved the world but it is behind us now. We want to do [it] once more and I think oncology is our best chance to do it.”

Republican Senators Threaten ICC: ‘Target Israel and We Will Target You’

The senators threatened 'severe sanctions' and referenced a law that would allow the US to use force against the court

A group of 12 Republican senators sent a letter to the chief prosecutor of the International Criminal Court (ICC) that threatens “severe sanctions” and hints at other action if the court issues arrest warrants for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and other Israeli officials.

The letter, dated April 24, was obtained by Zeteo and says that action against Israeli officials would result in “severe sanctions.” The senators referenced the American Service-Members’ Protection Act, a law that authorizes the president to use any means to free any US or allied personnel detained by the ICC. The law is nicknamed the Hague Invasion Act.

“If you issue a warrant for the arrest of the Israeli, we will interpret this not only as a threat to Israel’s sovereignty but as a threat to the sovereignty of the United States. Our country demonstrated in the American Service-Members’ Protection Act the lengths to which we will go to protect that sovereignty,” the letter reads.

The senators said the ICC didn’t have jurisdiction to issue warrants since neither the US nor Israel are members of the court. But the State of Palestine, which includes Gaza and the West Bank, was accepted as a member of the ICC in 2015, and any warrant would be related to Israel’s actions in Gaza.

The letter concludes: “The United States will not tolerate politicized attacks by the ICC on our allies. Target Israel and we will target you. If you move forward with the measures indicated in this report, we will move to end all American support for the ICC, sanction your employees and your associates, and bar you and your family from the United States. You have been warned.”

Israeli Tanks Seen Close to Rafah Border Crossing: Egyptian Official

A Palestinian security official and an Egyptian official say Israeli tanks have approached Rafah, and reached as close as 200 yards from the crossing with neighboring Egypt, reports Associated Press.

It’s understood that area where the tanks are is on the outskirts of Rafah, in southern Gaza.

The Egyptian official said the operation appeared to be limited in scope, the AP reported. The news agency could not independently verify the scope of the operation.

The Israeli military declined to comment and the Guardian has not been able to independently verified the reports.

The Egyptian official, located across the border from Rafah, and the Palestinian security official spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to talk to the press.

U.S. Confirms Russian Forces Deployed to Same Niger Airbase as American Troops

The US secretary of defence, Lloyd Austin, has confirmed Russian security forces have been deployed to the same airbase as American troops in the Nigerien capital, Niamey.

It remains unclear when the Russian troops, who have been in Niger for weeks, were deployed to Airbase 101, which is next to Diori Hamani international airport in Niamey. It is also unclear how many troops are on the ground.

“Airbase 101 where our forces [are], is a Nigerien air force base that is co-located with an international airport in the capital city. The Russians are in a separate compound and don’t have access to US forces or access to our equipment,” Austin said at a press conference in Honolulu.

Israeli Tanks Shut Down Gaza Side of Rafah Border Crossing with Egypt

An Israeli tank brigade took control Tuesday (May 7) of the Gaza Strip side of the Rafah border crossing with Egypt, authorities said, appearing to move forward with an offensive in the southern city even as cease-fire negotiations with Hamas remain on a knife's edge.

The move came after hours of whiplash in the Israel-Hamas war, with the militant group saying Monday (May 6) that it had accepted an Egyptian-Qatari mediated cease-fire proposal. Israel, however, insisted the deal didn't meet its core demands and rejected it.

Israel had already fully controlled all of Gaza's border crossings since it launched its war on Hamas seven months ago, but the tanks rolling in on Tuesday marked a significant increase in the Israeli military presence at the Rafah crossing.

Two Ukrainian Security Officials Detained Over Zelensky Assassination Plot

Two Ukrainian security officials have been detained for planning to assassinate President Volodymyr Zelensky, according to the country’s State Security Service (SBU).

Two Ukrainian government protection unit colonels have been detained and are accused of leaking classified information to Russia, the SBU said Tuesday (May 7), after it “exposed a network of agents” belonging to Russia’s state security service (FSB).

The SBU said it had “foiled” the “actively developing plans” to assassinate Zelensky.

“One of the tasks of the FSB’s agent network was to find perpetrators among the military close to the President’s security who could take the Head of State hostage and then kill him,” the SBU said.

The SBU said the assassination plans also targeted other senior Ukrainian officials, including the head of the SBU, Vasyl Maliuk, and the head of the Defence Intelligence of Ukraine, Kyrylo Budanov.

U.S. Soldier Detained in Russia, White House Confirms

A U.S. soldier was detained in Russia last week, the Army and National Security Council confirmed Monday (May 6).

On May 2, “Russian authorities in Vladivostok, Russia, detained an American Soldier on charges of criminal misconduct,” U.S. Army spokesperson Cynthia O. Smith said in a statement to The Hill.

Smith said the Russian Federation notified the State Department of the criminal detention, and the Army thereafter notified the soldier’s family.

The State Department “is providing appropriate consular support to the Soldier in Russia,” she added.

And a NSC spokesperson told The Hill that the State Department “is actively seeking consular access to this individual, who was not in Russia on behalf of or in affiliation with the U.S. government.”
