US Lawmakers Grill Former Biden Admin Officials Who Pressured Social Media Companies to Censor

In a session of the Select Subcommittee on the Weaponization of the Federal Government, Congressman Jim Jordan intensely questioned Rob Flaherty, former White House Director of Digital Strategy, on the Biden administration’s messaging on COVID-19 and its interactions with Big Tech platforms.

During the hearing, Jordan pressed Flaherty on several controversial statements made by the administration regarding the pandemic. Flaherty was specifically grilled about whether these statements constituted misinformation or disinformation, particularly in relation to claims that vaccinated individuals could not contract the virus, the effectiveness of masks, and the denial of natural immunity.

“Was that a guess or was that a lie?” Jordan asked pointedly about the administration’s early assurances regarding vaccines—that they prevent disease transmission.

The Congressman also scrutinized Flaherty’s role in influencing content moderation on social media platforms, citing specific instances where the White House appeared to have urged tech giants to censor certain viewpoints, particularly conservative ones.

Congressman Matt Gaetz aggressively questioned Rob Flaherty on his role in influencing content moderation on social media platforms, particularly regarding COVID-19 information. Flaherty dodged most of the questions, seemingly reluctant or unwilling to provide a specific answer.

Gaetz pressed Flaherty on who specifically directed the efforts to flag and possibly censor online content. Gaetz asked pointedly, “When we say we, I just want to know which human beings were involved in deciding like this Leonardo DiCaprio meme had to go.”

Columbia Crackdown Led By University Prof Doubling as NYPD Spook

The NYPD crackdown on Columbia U students was led by a member of the school’s faculty

Rebecca Weiner is a Columbia prof who leads an NYPD intel division that maintains an office in Tel Aviv

Weiner said student "rhetoric" necessitated the violent raid

Just a few hundred meters from the Gaza protest encampment, Weiner maintained an office at Columbia’s School of International and Public Affairs (SIPA). Her SIPA bio describes her as an “Adjunct Associate Professor of International and Public Affairs” who simultaneously serves as the “civilian executive in charge of the New York City Police Department’s Intelligence & Counterterrorism Bureau.”

In that role, according to SIPA, Weiner “develops policy and strategic priorities for the Intelligence & Counterterrorism Bureau and publicly represents the NYPD in matters involving counterterrorism and intelligence.”

The NYPD’s Counterterrorism Bureau currently maintains an office in Tel Aviv, Israel, where it coordinates with Israel’s security apparatus and maintains a department liaison. Weiner appears to serve as a bridge between the Bureau’s offices in Israel and New York.

One Twitter / X user commented:
This is fucking INSANE.

American campuses with intel offices with professors reporting back to Tel Aviv — to a foreign state.

While politicians say idiotic garbage like “Hamas has infiltrated campuses” — Israel is LITERALLY SPYING ON AMERICAN STUDENTS WITH NYPD SUPPORT

Syrian Forces Kill Dozens of ISIS Militants Near US Occupation Base

Russia and Syria say the US harbors and trains militants from ISIS and other groups in the 55 km buffer zone surrounding its base in Al-Tanf

ISIS militants launched a massive attack on 3 May on several points belonging to the forces supporting the Syrian army in the Al-Sukhna desert in the Homs countryside in eastern Syria, Sputnik reported.

A Sputnik correspondent in Homs said that the Syrian army and its auxiliary forces were able to repel the attack with the help of reinforcements, killing and wounding 40 ISIS militants. At the same time, 13 members of the Syrian army's auxiliary forces were killed in the battle.

ISIS launched the attack on Syrian military outposts in the Al-Sukhna desert, which lies north of the 55-kilometer buffer area surrounding the illegal US base at Al-Tanf on the Syrian–Jordanian–Iraqi border.

The US claims it occupies the Al-Tanf base to fight ISIS. However, the Russian and Syrian governments say US forces use the 55-kilometer buffer zone around the base to harbor and train militants from ISIS and other mercenary groups, including the Syrian Revolutionary Commandos, Ahrar al-Sharqiya, and the Ahmed al-Abdo Army.

US warplanes bomb any Syrian forces attempting to enter the Al-Tanf buffer zone to fight these groups.

On 19 April, at least 20 fighters from Liwa al-Quds, a Palestinian armed group supporting the Syrian army, were killed when their bus was ambushed by ISIS militants in Al-Sukhna.

ISIS militants attacked the bus with heavy machine guns and B7 artillery shells as it was traveling between the village of Al-Koum and the city of Al-Sukhnah in the eastern Badia desert near Palmyra.

Last Tuesday, the Deputy Head of the Russian Reconciliation Center between the warring parties in Syria, Major General Yuri Popov, announced that the Russian Air Force destroyed two bases for militants who had left the Al-Tanf area and were hiding in difficult-to-reach mountainous areas in Homs Governorate in central Syria.

Popov said, “Russian air force strikes destroyed two bases for militants who left the Al-Tanf area and were hiding in inaccessible areas in the Al-Amur mountain range in Homs province.”

ISIS emerged in Syria as part of the covert US and Israeli war on Damascus that began in 2011. Through Operation Timber Sycamore, the CIA and allied intelligence agencies funneled billions of dollars in weapons and aid to Al-Qaeda-linked militants in Syria from Iraq, Saudi Arabia, the UK, and Libya in an effort to topple Syrian President Bashar al-Assad's government.

CT Police Release Dash Footage Showing Police Cutting Off Oncoming ATV Rider Causing Him To Crash

New Haven, CT police release dash cam footage showing their police cruiser cutting off an ATV rider.

Police were called after they received reports of ATV and dirt bike riders at East Rock Park.

When one of the officers noticed an ATV rider coming down the road, he angled his car in front of the man causing him to crash into the car.

After receiving backlash online, the police issued a statement, defending the officer’s action.

"The officers slowed the cruiser and angled it to protect the families and pedestrians they had just passed, while providing a point of egress to the side of them for the oncoming ATV to pass the cruiser,"
they said.

"As the cruiser was slowing down, the operator lost control of his ATV, and struck the front passenger side window of the cruiser.
"

The man on the ATV was taken to the hospital with serious injuries.

Australian Authorities Push for Encryption Backdoors After Internet Censorship Attempt

In a relentless bid to give some of the most authoritarian regimes in the world a run for their money where internet censorship is concerned, Australia’s government continues to come up with one dubious initiative after another.

Recently, there was an attempt to censor content globally (related to two stabbing attacks in Australia), and shortly after, the country’s intelligence chief Mike Burgess, and Federal Police Commissioner Reece Kershaw addressed the National Press Club, to launch yet another attack on encryption by urging compliance with encryption backdoors legislation.

Burgess chose to call this—“accountable encryption.”

It isn’t “accountable” right now because, while Australia has passed laws to essentially break encryption, those who are supposed to implement them, technology companies, are not cooperating.

“I am asking the tech companies to do more. I’m asking them to give effect to the existing powers and to uphold existing laws. Without their help in very limited and strictly controlled circumstances, encryption is unaccountable,” he said.

ISIS Attacks Pro-Government Fighters in Syria, Killing at Least 15

ISIS forces carried out a series of attacks against pro-government military sites In the eastern Homs desert of Syria on Friday (May 3), sparking gun battles that left at least 15 pro-government forces dead and an unknown number of others wounded.

The wounded were evacuated to hospitals in Homs Province, with the number of wounded expected to rise as sites recover from the onslaught.

Weakened in protracted offensives during the Syrian Civil War, ISIS has been attempting to return to its previous level of power and influence across the nation and is carrying out a growing number of attacks.

In addition to the attacks on pro-government forces, ISIS reportedly threw a grenade against a house in Deir Ezzor, further to the east. One person was injured.

This is the first big series of attacks since April 19, when ISIS killed 28 soldiers and other pro-government fighters across the east of the country.

Israel Gives Extremist Settler ‘Absolute’ Control of Occupied West Bank

The new head of the army's Central Command has overseen several major army major operations and stood by as settlers carried out pogroms in the occupied West Bank

Brigadier General Avi Bluth, an extremist religious settler, has been appointed to the position of Central Command commander of the Israeli army, Israeli media reported on 2 May.

Bluth has previously served as commander of the Army’s Judea and Samaria Division and as Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s Military Secretary.

According to Muhammad Shehada of Euro Med Human Rights, Bluth will now have absolute powers over the West Bank, including the ability to demolish homes and conduct army raids.

Bluth contributed to pogroms against Palestinians in the towns of Huwara and Burqa by standing by as Jewish settlers lynched civilians and burned and destroyed homes, shops, and vehicles.

He also played a role in incorporating extremists from a religious settler group called the Hilltop Youth into units of the Israeli army.

Bluth pushed for Operation Break the Wave in 2022, in which the army killed 149 Palestinians in the West Bank and abducted 2000 others in a series of raids, and Operation Bayit Vagan in July 2023, in which the army carried out a massive assault on Jenin, killing 12 Palestinians and leaving widespread destruction in its wake.

Bluth is a signatory to the army’s 2015 policy change, which loosened the conditions for using live fire against Palestinians throwing stones and carrying out ramming operations.

Shehada adds that Bluth has links to the Religious Zionism Party led by Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich, which is committed to stealing and annexing Palestinian land in the West Bank.

As Russian Forces Advance, Ukraine Struggles to Build New Defensive Lines

Russian forces are advancing in several places across the 600-mile frontline in Ukraine, straining Kiev’s ability to build rear fortifications. Some in the Ukrainian military fault the country’s leadership for not building stronger second and third-line defenses last year while Russian troops were stalled.

According to a dozen Ukrainian soldiers, government officials, and construction company directors who spoke with the Associated Press, Kiev is struggling to set up new defensive lines as its forces retreat. The officials cited several issues including decision-making last year, bureaucracy in doling out military contracts, and ammunition shortages.

A deputy infantry commander fighting near Avdiivka explained that the defensive line needed to be built last year during Ukraine’s offensive. “There was an absence of responsibility. … People didn’t understand that fortifications can save your life if you do it in advance,” he stated. “Many people thought we … wouldn’t need to prepare such lines. They didn’t expect a new Russian offensive.”

Last summer, at Washington’s insistence, Kiev launched a counteroffensive that failed to retake much territory due to deeply entrenched Russian defensive lines. Ukraine lost a significant number of troops and military equipment during the failed assault.

The AP notes that “Ukraine’s lack of adequate defensive lines has helped Russia make significant military gains, and constant enemy fire hinders building.”

What Comes First, a Rafah Invasion or a Netanyahu Ousting?

Facing domestic and international pressure for Israel’s US-backed Gaza assault, the Biden administration appears poised to throw Netanyahu under the proverbial bus.

In Gaza, a metaphorical “hostage” scenario has emerged, centered on Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, whose political future is being bartered at a steep political price.

Although not physically detained, Netanyahu has been shackled by a complex situation since the 7 October Operation Al-Aqsa Flood...

Internationally, Israel’s carefully constructed image has entered pariah status, as accusations of “genocide,” “war crimes,” and “apartheid” fly liberally around global capital buildings and in mass street protests. This is a language that signals a strategic defeat for Tel Aviv – not at all the ‘military victory‘ Netanyahu had promised his constituents and allies.

Resignations and repercussions

After seven months of grossly disproportionate aggression against the mainly civilian, densely-populated Gaza, the Israeli premier’s prospects of deriving strategic benefits from further military action are dwindling.

Even his attempts to pivot to political achievements – like ceasefire deals and grand bargains – are fraught with considerable risks for his shaky government coalition.

Today, Netanyahu’s threat to invade Rafah, the southernmost area of Gaza where over a million displaced Palestinians seek relief, could either further entrench him in crisis or precipitate his political downfall.

The bad news keeps rolling in. Last week’s resignation of Israel’s head of Military Intelligence, Aharon Haleva, over failures related to 7 October, signals a broader national crisis about to unfold. Reports from Yedioth Ahronoth suggest that additional senior military and security officials are also expected to resign.

“The domino effect of the resignation of the head of military intelligence may soon occur, including the Chief of Staff as well,
” the Hebrew daily reported.

Despite its enthusiasm for Palestinian bloodshed, Israeli public opinion, as reflected in various polls over recent months, overwhelmingly holds Netanyahu and his administration accountable for the now obvious failures of the war. This sentiment is compounded by the inability of the once-touted “invincible army” to secure the release of any of the Israeli captives held in Gaza by the Palestinian resistance.

Israeli writer and historian Yuval Harari argues in a recent Haaretz article that “the ruinous policy of the Netanyahu government following October 7 has placed Israel in existential danger.”

With US elections around the corner, President Joe Biden is seeking to strike the posture of a “peacemaker” who averted a greater catastrophe in Gaza – redeeming himself for Washington’s unabashed military and political support for genocide by forcing through a fragile truce in Rafah.

Tel Aviv’s Gaza war has left bruises all over the Biden administration and its western allies. They now calculate that a Rafah invasion will not produce results different from Israel’s northern and central Gaza invasions.

Collision course with the US

As the electoral countdown begins in the United States, Biden’s already low poll ratings are further eroded by images of mass student protests at prestigious American universities across the country – almost 80 campuses at the time of writing... Continue Reading⤵️

Houthis Threaten to Target Israel-Bound Ships in the Mediterranean

Yemen’s Houthi rebels have threatened to extend their attacks on Israel-bound shipping to the Mediterranean after months of strikes on vessels in the Red Sea.

The Iran-backed Houthis, who say they are acting in support of Palestinians during the Israel-Hamas war, said the escalation would take effect “immediately.”

In a televised speech Friday (May 3), military spokesman Yaha Sarea said Yemen’s Houthis will target ships heading to Israeli ports in any area that is within their range. “We will target any ships heading to Israeli ports in the Mediterranean Sea in any area we are able to reach,” he said.

🔔 54 years ago today, on May 4, 1970, four students were killed and nine others were injured after the Ohio National Guard fired into a crowd of students protesting the Vietnam War.

The shooting lasted for 13 seconds and was followed with a brief period of silence before many in the crowd began to scream and cry.

Glenn Frank, a geology professor on campus, was a faculty peace marshal that weekend. Earlier that day he had jumped into an ambulance and requested the driver to take him to the scene. After helping to get the deceased and wounded students into the ambulances, a group of 1,000 students sat down in front of the guard.

Professor Frank’s actions on May 4, 1970, are said to have saved hundreds of lives. In an emotional plea to the students and protestors, Glenn Frank famously said:

“I don’t care whether you’ve never listened to anyone before in your lives. I am begging you right now if you don’t disperse right now they’re going to move in and it can only be a slaughter. Would you please listen to me. Jesus Christ. I don’t want to be a part of this.”

After hearing Glenn Frank’s plea, many students left the premise and no one else was killed by the National Guard that day.

However, for Glenn Frank himself, he remained deeply troubled by the events that took place. Glenn spent the rest of his life searching for the truth by investigating what led up to the senseless killing of four college students.

Three years ago, I sat down with Glenn's son, Alan Frank, who was a student at Kent State in 1970 and present at the shootings. Alan shared with me his father’s extensive research as well as his own personal experience on May 4, 1970.

My article/transcript of my interview with Alan Frank includes never-before-seen documentation on the shootings: https://www.globalresearch.ca/new-leaked-documents-related-kent-state-may-4th-shootings-raise-serious-questions/5744525

Alex Winter, Actor and Filmmaker, Publishes Essay in Rolling Stone Calling for Ross Ulbricht to Be Set Free

He Helped Create Silk Road — But Ross Ulbricht Should Be Freed

"I first met Ross while he was incarcerated in a high-security detention center in Manhattan awaiting trial, and after he was transferred to federal prison, we formed a closer relationship. The Ross I know is highly educated, insightful, remorseful, humane, and self-aware. He has been a model prisoner for these intervening years, teaching math and yoga and helping fellow prisoners get off drugs and prepare for release. It’s my firm opinion, and the opinion of many prison system and criminal-law experts, that his sentence is disproportionate to his charges and that he deserves clemency. This case indeed reflects just one of the millions of unjust sentences in the long and failed war on drugs, but that’s no excuse to ignore this case or any other that deserves to be heard and corrected. Our justice and carceral systems are long overdue for reform, and we can and should be arguing for clemency in all cases of unjust sentencing.

No matter what one thinks of Ross, Silk Road, or the crimes that may have been committed, 10 years in prison is more than sufficient and customary punishment for those offenses or sins. Ross Ulbricht should be free."
