There’s "Widespread" Belief Among US Officials That Israel Can’t Beat Hamas

There is a “widespread belief” among US officials that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s goal of “eradicating” Hamas in Gaza is unattainable, The New York Times reported on Thursday (May 2).

Throughout the past seven months, there have been multiple signs that the US doesn’t believe Israel could achieve its goals in Gaza, yet the Biden administration has continued to support the slaughter of Palestinians in the Strip.

In March, the US intelligence agencies released their annual “threat assessment,” and it said Israel will face “lingering armed resistance” for “years to come” and that the Israeli military would struggle to destroy Hamas’s underground infrastructure.

The Washington Post also reported in March that the US didn’t think Israel had clear or attainable goals as far back as October. “We never had a clear sense that the Israelis had a definable and achievable military objective,” a source familiar with an October 27 Biden administration meeting on the situation in Gaza told the Post. “From the very beginning, there’s been a sense of us not knowing how the Israelis were going to do what they said they were going to do.”

🚨BREAKING: Israel Gives Hamas a Week to Strike a Deal or Rafah Offensive Will Begin — WSJ

Israel has given Hamas a week to agree to a cease-fire deal or it will begin a military operation in Rafah, Egyptian officials briefed on the matter said Friday, as the militant group stalls for better terms that would ensure its survival.

Egypt worked with Israel on a revised cease-fire proposal that it presented to Hamas last weekend, according to Egyptian officials. Hamas’s political leadership was expected to consult with its military wing in Gaza and respond on the proposal. But Yahya Sinwar, the group’s military leader in Gaza, who is believed to be hiding in tunnels in the enclave and makes the final decisions, hasn’t responded, the officials said.

Times of Israel (1/2):

Tensions rise in Netanyahu’s coalition government as military replacements announced:

○ On 2 May, the Israeli army announced the promotion of 5 generals to replace the recent resignations across the 'General staff', the senior command in charge of the different branches in the military.

○ The announcement has been met with criticism from Israeli ministers, lawmakers, and media, citing disapproval over allowing current government and military officials, responsible for the security failure on 7 October, to select incoming replacements.

○ There has also been condemnation over promoting generals from within the military, prior to reviewing their potential involvement in what led to the failure on 7 October.
Forwarded from The Cradle
Times of Israel (2/2):

○ Concerns have also been expressed over the potential instability caused by making changes to the military leadership during a time of war.

○ The appointment considered the most controversial is General Shlomi Binder, head of the Operations Division, meant to replace the head of ‘Aman’ the Military Intelligence Directorate Aharon Haliva.

○ Extremist far-right ministers Itamar Ben Gvir and Bezalel Smotrich publicly denounced the appointments, they attributed to War Minister Yoav Gallant, claiming that he had no jurisdiction to make new appointments given his culpability in the security failure of 7 October. They also called on Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to fire Gallant.

US Lawmakers Grill Former Biden Admin Officials Who Pressured Social Media Companies to Censor

In a session of the Select Subcommittee on the Weaponization of the Federal Government, Congressman Jim Jordan intensely questioned Rob Flaherty, former White House Director of Digital Strategy, on the Biden administration’s messaging on COVID-19 and its interactions with Big Tech platforms.

During the hearing, Jordan pressed Flaherty on several controversial statements made by the administration regarding the pandemic. Flaherty was specifically grilled about whether these statements constituted misinformation or disinformation, particularly in relation to claims that vaccinated individuals could not contract the virus, the effectiveness of masks, and the denial of natural immunity.

“Was that a guess or was that a lie?” Jordan asked pointedly about the administration’s early assurances regarding vaccines—that they prevent disease transmission.

The Congressman also scrutinized Flaherty’s role in influencing content moderation on social media platforms, citing specific instances where the White House appeared to have urged tech giants to censor certain viewpoints, particularly conservative ones.

Congressman Matt Gaetz aggressively questioned Rob Flaherty on his role in influencing content moderation on social media platforms, particularly regarding COVID-19 information. Flaherty dodged most of the questions, seemingly reluctant or unwilling to provide a specific answer.

Gaetz pressed Flaherty on who specifically directed the efforts to flag and possibly censor online content. Gaetz asked pointedly, “When we say we, I just want to know which human beings were involved in deciding like this Leonardo DiCaprio meme had to go.”

Columbia Crackdown Led By University Prof Doubling as NYPD Spook

The NYPD crackdown on Columbia U students was led by a member of the school’s faculty

Rebecca Weiner is a Columbia prof who leads an NYPD intel division that maintains an office in Tel Aviv

Weiner said student "rhetoric" necessitated the violent raid

Just a few hundred meters from the Gaza protest encampment, Weiner maintained an office at Columbia’s School of International and Public Affairs (SIPA). Her SIPA bio describes her as an “Adjunct Associate Professor of International and Public Affairs” who simultaneously serves as the “civilian executive in charge of the New York City Police Department’s Intelligence & Counterterrorism Bureau.”

In that role, according to SIPA, Weiner “develops policy and strategic priorities for the Intelligence & Counterterrorism Bureau and publicly represents the NYPD in matters involving counterterrorism and intelligence.”

The NYPD’s Counterterrorism Bureau currently maintains an office in Tel Aviv, Israel, where it coordinates with Israel’s security apparatus and maintains a department liaison. Weiner appears to serve as a bridge between the Bureau’s offices in Israel and New York.

One Twitter / X user commented:
This is fucking INSANE.

American campuses with intel offices with professors reporting back to Tel Aviv — to a foreign state.

While politicians say idiotic garbage like “Hamas has infiltrated campuses” — Israel is LITERALLY SPYING ON AMERICAN STUDENTS WITH NYPD SUPPORT

Syrian Forces Kill Dozens of ISIS Militants Near US Occupation Base

Russia and Syria say the US harbors and trains militants from ISIS and other groups in the 55 km buffer zone surrounding its base in Al-Tanf

ISIS militants launched a massive attack on 3 May on several points belonging to the forces supporting the Syrian army in the Al-Sukhna desert in the Homs countryside in eastern Syria, Sputnik reported.

A Sputnik correspondent in Homs said that the Syrian army and its auxiliary forces were able to repel the attack with the help of reinforcements, killing and wounding 40 ISIS militants. At the same time, 13 members of the Syrian army's auxiliary forces were killed in the battle.

ISIS launched the attack on Syrian military outposts in the Al-Sukhna desert, which lies north of the 55-kilometer buffer area surrounding the illegal US base at Al-Tanf on the Syrian–Jordanian–Iraqi border.

The US claims it occupies the Al-Tanf base to fight ISIS. However, the Russian and Syrian governments say US forces use the 55-kilometer buffer zone around the base to harbor and train militants from ISIS and other mercenary groups, including the Syrian Revolutionary Commandos, Ahrar al-Sharqiya, and the Ahmed al-Abdo Army.

US warplanes bomb any Syrian forces attempting to enter the Al-Tanf buffer zone to fight these groups.

On 19 April, at least 20 fighters from Liwa al-Quds, a Palestinian armed group supporting the Syrian army, were killed when their bus was ambushed by ISIS militants in Al-Sukhna.

ISIS militants attacked the bus with heavy machine guns and B7 artillery shells as it was traveling between the village of Al-Koum and the city of Al-Sukhnah in the eastern Badia desert near Palmyra.

Last Tuesday, the Deputy Head of the Russian Reconciliation Center between the warring parties in Syria, Major General Yuri Popov, announced that the Russian Air Force destroyed two bases for militants who had left the Al-Tanf area and were hiding in difficult-to-reach mountainous areas in Homs Governorate in central Syria.

Popov said, “Russian air force strikes destroyed two bases for militants who left the Al-Tanf area and were hiding in inaccessible areas in the Al-Amur mountain range in Homs province.”

ISIS emerged in Syria as part of the covert US and Israeli war on Damascus that began in 2011. Through Operation Timber Sycamore, the CIA and allied intelligence agencies funneled billions of dollars in weapons and aid to Al-Qaeda-linked militants in Syria from Iraq, Saudi Arabia, the UK, and Libya in an effort to topple Syrian President Bashar al-Assad's government.

Australian Authorities Push for Encryption Backdoors After Internet Censorship Attempt

In a relentless bid to give some of the most authoritarian regimes in the world a run for their money where internet censorship is concerned, Australia’s government continues to come up with one dubious initiative after another.

Recently, there was an attempt to censor content globally (related to two stabbing attacks in Australia), and shortly after, the country’s intelligence chief Mike Burgess, and Federal Police Commissioner Reece Kershaw addressed the National Press Club, to launch yet another attack on encryption by urging compliance with encryption backdoors legislation.

Burgess chose to call this—“accountable encryption.”

It isn’t “accountable” right now because, while Australia has passed laws to essentially break encryption, those who are supposed to implement them, technology companies, are not cooperating.

“I am asking the tech companies to do more. I’m asking them to give effect to the existing powers and to uphold existing laws. Without their help in very limited and strictly controlled circumstances, encryption is unaccountable,” he said.

ISIS Attacks Pro-Government Fighters in Syria, Killing at Least 15

ISIS forces carried out a series of attacks against pro-government military sites In the eastern Homs desert of Syria on Friday (May 3), sparking gun battles that left at least 15 pro-government forces dead and an unknown number of others wounded.

The wounded were evacuated to hospitals in Homs Province, with the number of wounded expected to rise as sites recover from the onslaught.

Weakened in protracted offensives during the Syrian Civil War, ISIS has been attempting to return to its previous level of power and influence across the nation and is carrying out a growing number of attacks.

In addition to the attacks on pro-government forces, ISIS reportedly threw a grenade against a house in Deir Ezzor, further to the east. One person was injured.

This is the first big series of attacks since April 19, when ISIS killed 28 soldiers and other pro-government fighters across the east of the country.

Israel Gives Extremist Settler ‘Absolute’ Control of Occupied West Bank

The new head of the army's Central Command has overseen several major army major operations and stood by as settlers carried out pogroms in the occupied West Bank

Brigadier General Avi Bluth, an extremist religious settler, has been appointed to the position of Central Command commander of the Israeli army, Israeli media reported on 2 May.

Bluth has previously served as commander of the Army’s Judea and Samaria Division and as Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s Military Secretary.

According to Muhammad Shehada of Euro Med Human Rights, Bluth will now have absolute powers over the West Bank, including the ability to demolish homes and conduct army raids.

Bluth contributed to pogroms against Palestinians in the towns of Huwara and Burqa by standing by as Jewish settlers lynched civilians and burned and destroyed homes, shops, and vehicles.

He also played a role in incorporating extremists from a religious settler group called the Hilltop Youth into units of the Israeli army.

Bluth pushed for Operation Break the Wave in 2022, in which the army killed 149 Palestinians in the West Bank and abducted 2000 others in a series of raids, and Operation Bayit Vagan in July 2023, in which the army carried out a massive assault on Jenin, killing 12 Palestinians and leaving widespread destruction in its wake.

Bluth is a signatory to the army’s 2015 policy change, which loosened the conditions for using live fire against Palestinians throwing stones and carrying out ramming operations.

Shehada adds that Bluth has links to the Religious Zionism Party led by Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich, which is committed to stealing and annexing Palestinian land in the West Bank.

As Russian Forces Advance, Ukraine Struggles to Build New Defensive Lines

Russian forces are advancing in several places across the 600-mile frontline in Ukraine, straining Kiev’s ability to build rear fortifications. Some in the Ukrainian military fault the country’s leadership for not building stronger second and third-line defenses last year while Russian troops were stalled.

According to a dozen Ukrainian soldiers, government officials, and construction company directors who spoke with the Associated Press, Kiev is struggling to set up new defensive lines as its forces retreat. The officials cited several issues including decision-making last year, bureaucracy in doling out military contracts, and ammunition shortages.

A deputy infantry commander fighting near Avdiivka explained that the defensive line needed to be built last year during Ukraine’s offensive. “There was an absence of responsibility. … People didn’t understand that fortifications can save your life if you do it in advance,” he stated. “Many people thought we … wouldn’t need to prepare such lines. They didn’t expect a new Russian offensive.”

Last summer, at Washington’s insistence, Kiev launched a counteroffensive that failed to retake much territory due to deeply entrenched Russian defensive lines. Ukraine lost a significant number of troops and military equipment during the failed assault.

The AP notes that “Ukraine’s lack of adequate defensive lines has helped Russia make significant military gains, and constant enemy fire hinders building.”
