Microsoft and Meta Detail Plans To Combat “Election Disinformation” Which Includes Meme Stamp-Style Watermarks and Reliance on “Fact Checkers”
And so it begins. In fact, it hardly ever stops – another election cycle in well on its way in the US. But what has emerged these last few years, and what continues to crop up the closer the election day gets, is the role of the most influential social platforms/tech companies.
Pressure on them is sometimes public, but mostly not, as the Twitter Files have taught us; and it is with this in mind that various announcements about combating “election disinformation” coming from Big Tech should be viewed.
Although, one can never discount the possibility that some – say, Microsoft – are doing it quite voluntarily. That company has now come out with what it calls “new steps to protect elections,” and is framing this concern for election integrity more broadly than just the goings-on in the US.
From the EU to India and many, many places in between, elections will be held over the next year or so, says Microsoft, however, these democratic processes are at peril.
“While voters exercise this right, another force is also at work to influence and possibly interfere with the outcomes of these consequential contests,” said a blog post co-authored by Microsoft Vice Chair and President Brad Smith.
By “another force,” could Smith possibly mean, Big Tech? No. It’s “multiple authoritarian nation states” he’s talking about, and Microsoft’s “Election Protection Commitments” seek to counter that threat in a 5-step plan to be deployed in the US, and elsewhere where “critical” elections are to be held.
Critical more than others why, and what is Microsoft seeking to protect – it’s all very unclear.
But one of the measures is the Content Credentials digital metadata scheme, similar to meme stamp watermarking. However, considering that the most widely used browser, Chrome, is not signed up to the group (C2PA) that spawned Content Credentials, the question remains how helpful it will be to political campaigns using this tech in their images or videos, “to show how, when, and by whom the content was created or edited, including if it was generated by AI.”
Meta (Facebook) also announced its own effort in the same vein, seeking to combat altered content such as deepfakes – in case they “merge, combine, replace, and/or superimpose content onto a video, creating a video that appears authentic (… and) would likely mislead an average person.”

A senior Ukrainian military officer with deep ties to the country’s intelligence services played a central role in the bombing of the Nord Stream natural gas pipeline last year, according to officials in Ukraine and elsewhere in Europe, as well as other people knowledgeable about the details of the covert operation.

Palestinian Woman Whom Liberal Media Compared to Rosa Parks Is Accused of Threatening to Drink Jews’ Blood and Eat Their Skulls
A Palestinian who was heralded as a “hero” and compared to Rosa Parks by liberal media after she assaulted an Israel Defense Forces soldier in Nabi Selah, a village in the West Bank, was arrested Monday by the IDF for allegedly inciting terrorism and calling for drinking the blood of Jews.
“The IDF has carried out substantial numbers of counterterrorism activity since Oct. 7 and has apprehended hundreds of suspects. Overnight, the IDF carried out activity to apprehend individuals suspected of involvement in terrorist activity and incitement,” the IDF said. “During the activity, Ahed Tamimi, who is suspected of inciting violence and calling for terrorist activity to be carried out, was apprehended in the town of Nabi Saleh. Tamimi was transferred to Israeli security forces for further questioning.”
Tamimi’s arrest pertained to a social media post allegedly from her social media account, which called for Palestinians to drink Jewish blood and eat their skulls.
“Our message to the herd of settlers, we are waiting for you in all the West Bank cities from Hebron to Jenin – we will slaughter you and you will say what Hitler did to you was a joke, we will drink your blood, and eat your skulls, come on, we are waiting for you,” the image, posted to IG Stories, allegedly said.
Tamimi’s mother first denied that the posts were from her daughter’s official account, and later said the account was hacked.

For two years, Menachem Gida wrestled with a dark sense of foreboding.
The communications hobbyist was part of a team of volunteers who, using a “satellite farm” in southern Israel, compulsively monitored Gaza’s communications networks and Arab media, passing on nuggets of information to the Israeli military.
It was a semi-formal relationship. But when they repeatedly warned that Hamas fighters were conducting elaborate war games near the border, the amateur snoops were brushed aside. “The Israeli military officer told us: ‘You’re not important, we don’t need you,’” Gida said.
Gida was not alone. Michael Milstein, an ex-military intelligence officer, told his former colleagues and wrote numerous articles in the press saying that Israel’s approach to Hamas was not working — but nobody paid much attention. “The writing was on the wall,” said Milstein, a former government adviser on Palestinian affairs in Gaza and the West Bank. “Hamas was preaching war.:
Even warnings from Israel’s Combat Intelligence Corps, which monitors the country’s frontier with Gaza, were ignored. One soldier, Noa Melman, told her superiors earlier this year that Hamas militants were practising attacks on a mock fence, blowing it up again and again.
“But everyone treated it like it was normal, like it was routine,” she said in a subsequent television interview.
...The synchronised attack shattered Israel’s faith in its military and intelligence services. Not only had they failed to track what one of its main enemies was planning, they had ignored multiple warnings that Hamas was preparing a major offensive, often in plain sight.
....The lessons that Israeli security officials have drawn from their failure to anticipate the assault have deadly implications. Their conclusion is that Israel can no longer depend on intelligence to provide an early warning of attacks from Gaza, or on the country’s military might to deter them. Instead, it must pre-empt potential threats by directly eliminating them.
“The only solution is: no more relying on intelligence,” the senior Israeli official said. “Deterrence is no longer enough . . . It is a new paradigm.”

US Debt Interest Bill Rockets Past a Cool $1 Trillion a Year
US Treasuries may face renewed selling pressure into the new year if one measure of the nation’s swelling debt repayment bill is any guide.
Estimated annualized interest payments on the US government debt pile climbed past $1 trillion at the end of last month, Bloomberg analysis shows. That projected amount has doubled in the past 19 months from the equivalent figure forecast around the time.
Thomas Massie would comment on the matter: "So much for reaching the stars… One week of interest on the national debt is roughly equivalent to NASA’s entire annual budget. (~$20 billion)"

It happened last Saturday. Families who lost loved ones in the Hamas attack gathered in Jerusalem and brought down the barriers that stood between them and Netanyahu's residence. Their volcanic rage started to erupt. They can no longer stand the fact that this man is still prime minister
It started with a “J’Accuse” speech by Gadi Kedem, who lost six family members in the Hamas massacre. “I accuse Benjamin Netanyahu of leading Israel to the biggest disaster in its history,” said Kedem, a resident of Kibbutz Ein Hashlosha, in a video posted last Friday. “I accuse him of tearing apart the nation with the judicial coup, which dismantled and weakened the state in the face of its enemies; of forsaking the communities near the Gaza border for years; of strengthening Hamas by way of suitcases of money; of ignoring the warnings of the heads of defense organizations. The blood of my family is on his hands.”

Study Explores Limits of DNA Structure and Function, May Expand Use of Modified DNA in Medicine
A team led by Professor Michal Hocek at IOCB Prague has explored the limits of the structure and function of DNA and successfully pushed forward known boundaries. Their latest research has just been published in Nucleic Acids Research.
They prove that even heavily modified double helices of DNA are stable enough to be used for special applications. This discovery might expand the possibilities of utilizing modified DNA, for example, in medicine.
DNA consists of two long negatively charged chains that hold together even though they repel each other. This is made possible by what is known as stacking interactions and base pairing. Hocek and his colleagues advanced the known limits when they modified DNA by adding an extra negative charge to each letter of the genetic code.
This doubled the repulsive forces, yet the DNA double helix remained stable. They also found that such modified DNA not only holds together but that it can also be synthesized or replicated and sequenced using the enzyme DNA polymerase.
"Think of DNA as a scaffold on which you can attach various chemical compounds with different functions. These are small molecules, such as side chains of amino acids, which occur naturally only in peptides and proteins," says Hocek.
"In current medicine, we are able to use these molecules only to a relatively limited extent. The reason is that they are markedly unstable and get decomposed rapidly when inside an organism. One solution to this would be a stable skeleton to which they could be firmly attached. And DNA could be just such a base structure in the future.
"The aim of this research is to create DNA molecules that will mimic other chemical compounds. This would enable us to leverage the medicinal potential of certain biomolecules that are difficult to retain in the body. Examples of such biomolecules are the already mentioned peptides or proteins."

2016 Flashback: Peter Thiel Wants to Inject Himself With Young People’s Blood
The Silicon Valley billionaire reportedly sees blood transfusions as the pathway to radical life extension.
Tump delegate and Gawker bankrupter Peter Thiel is no stranger to the idea of increasing his lifespan through science. “I stand against confiscatory taxes, totalitarian collectives, and the ideology of the inevitability of the death of every individual,” he wrote in libertarian journal Cato Unbound seven years ago. On Bloomberg TV in 2014, Thiel explained that he was taking human-growth hormone pills as part of his plan to live 120 years. “It helps maintain muscle mass, so you’re much less likely to get bone injuries, arthritis,” he said.
Given Thiel’s obsession with warding off death, it comes as no surprise that the Silicon Valley billionaire is interested in at least one radical way of doing it: injecting himself with a young person’s blood.
On Monday, Jeff Bercovici of Inc. magazine published part of a year-old interview with Thiel, in which the venture-capitalist explains that he’s interested in parabiosis, which includes the practice of getting transfusions of blood from a younger person, as a means of improving health and potentially reversing aging:
“I'm looking into parabiosis stuff, which I think is really interesting. This is where they did the young blood into older mice and they found that had a massive rejuvenating effect,” he said. “And so that’s . . . that is one that . . . again, it’s one of these very odd things where people had done these studies in the 1950s and then it got dropped altogether. I think there are a lot of these things that have been strangely under-explored.”
It’s unclear whether the 48-year-old entrepreneur is currently receiving parabiosis treatments. Bercovici reports that a Thiel Capital employee—actually, the “Personal Health Director to Peter Thiel,” according to his LinkedIn page—previously expressed interest in the technique to Jesse Karmazin, the founder of Ambrosia LLC, a company that has been looking for volunteers over the age of 35 to receive blood transfusions from individuals under the age of 25. Bercovici notes that Silicon Valley is abound with rumors of wealthy tech elites experimenting with parabiosis, and Gawker has reported that it received a tip in June claiming that Thiel “spends $40,000 per quarter to get an infusion of blood from an 18-year-old based on research conducted at Stanford on extending the lives of mice.”
