US Beefs up Illegal Presence in Syria’s North
Washington is reinforcing its presence in fear of a renewed surge of attacks against its bases in both Iraq and Syria
The US army reinforced its occupation in northern Syria throughout the month of April in fear of a renewed surge of resistance attacks against US military bases in the country.
“The US began an additional reinforcement plan for its illegal bases in Syria, since the incident of the [Israeli] targeting of the Iranian embassy in Damascus, for fear of a response that would target its bases. The reinforcements included weapons and equipment,” sources told Al-Mayadeen on 29 April.
More than 120 trucks and eight military cargo planes loaded with various types of weaponry and equipment, including air defenses, arrived at the Kharab al-Jir base in Hasakah and the US-occupied Al-Omar oilfield in Deir Ezzor this month, according to Al-Mayadeen.
The report comes just a week after a US base in Syria was attacked with rockets for the first time since February. No group has since claimed responsibility for the attack.
The Ain al-Assad base in Iraq was also targeted with drones on 22 April.
In October, the Islamic Resistance of Iraq (IRI) coalition of armed groups began attacking US bases in Iraq and Syria in solidarity with the resistance in Gaza. Following an attack that killed three US soldiers on the Jordanian–Syrian border in late January, the IRI suspended attacks on US bases but continues to target sites within Israel.
The IRI “focused its attacks during the last period on the occupied Palestinian territories and the occupied Syrian Golan in support of the people of Gaza,” however, it is ready “for a resumption of escalation in Syria and Iraq if it senses American evasion of the decision to gradually withdraw from Iraq,” Al-Mayadeen’s sources added.
Baghdad and Washington have recently been discussing a time frame for an end to the US combat presence in Iraq and its transition into an advisory role.

Facebook and Instagram Face EU Probes in Content Crackdown
Facebook and Instagram will get European Union investigations into potential infringements of content-moderation rules as soon as today (April 29), four people told POLITICO.
The probes are likely to target a range of issues including Meta's handling of ads, especially political ads, to examine suspected breaches of the Digital Services Act (DSA), said the people who were granted anonymity to discuss a confidential procedure.
Hundreds of millions of Europeans will go to the polls on June 6-9 to elect new Parliament representatives, who will set the bloc’s agenda for the next five years. EU governments are worried about a surge in Russian meddling that could sway voters’ opinions. A French minister even warned that the country was "overwhelmed with propaganda."

Canadian municipality now requires a QR code
A Canadian town in the Gulf of St. Lawrence has become the first municipality in the country to officially require a QR code to enter and leave.
Officials say that the requirement of a QR code to enter or leave the archipelago Îles-de-la-Madeleine will only be for tourists, while residents will be required to show their driver’s licence to enter or leave.
The decision to require a QR code and identification for the municipality’s 12,000+ residents came after the municipal government announced they would begin charging all visitors who come to Îles-de-la-Madeleine $30, something which hasn’t gone down well with the locals or their family members who visit them.
Of the many concerns, one that officials sought to address was ensuring that visitors had paid their fees before leaving, hence the introduction of a mandatory QR code to leave the islands. If you don’t pay, you can’t get the QR code and won’t be able to leave.
This was initially intended for residents, too, but following an outpour of criticism, officials backed down and now say that residents only have to show their driver’s licence.

Friends,
It is sad to see conservative/right wingers who claimed to care about free speech during COVID1984 drop the cause now that protesters are calling out Israel's crimes. You don't have to endorse all the actions of the protesters (like encampments, or breaking into buildings) to support freedom of speech.
If you spoke up when college campuses were stifling free speech on topics you care about, or of people you follow, and now are calling for violently arresting protesters on campuses, you are part of the problem.
Your principles don't matter if you abandon them at a moment's notice, or when there's a cause you don't support.
This article highlights how in 2019 TX Governor Greg Abbot signed a law to protect free speech on college campuses and now he is excitedly sending in state troopers to disrupt and attack protesters.
Hypocrisy at its finest.
Texas GOP and UT-Austin leaders shift from championing free speech to policing protesters’ intentions
The arrest of dozens of Pro-Palestinian demonstrators since last week has left First Amendment advocates asking who gets to enjoy speech protections in Texas.

Texas Gov. Abbott in 2019: “I’m about to sign a law that protects free speech on college campuses in Texas. I shouldn’t have to do it. First Amendment guarantees it.”
Abbott in 2020: Makes a trip to Israel, visits the infamous “Wailing Wall,” and pledges support for the strengthening of “the bond between Texas and Israel.”
Abbott in 2024: Claims pro-Palestinian Protesters are “hate-filled” and “antisemitic,” cheers on police abuse of peaceful students, professors and journalists on the UT Austin campus.
So much for “free speech” being guaranteed on college campuses in Texas…

Russia Arrests More Journalists on "Extremism" Charges
Three Russian journalists were arrested Friday (April 26) and Saturday (April 27) and detained, as Russia continues a crackdown on media inside the country.
Konstantin Gabov and Sergey Karelin were charged with “extremism” on Saturday, The Associated Press (AP) first reported. They stand accused of working with a political group associated with the late Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny, who died earlier this year in prison.
The pair will be held in custody for at least two months before trial. The charges carry a sentence of two to six years in prison, if convicted.
Forbes Russia journalist Sergei Mingazov was also arrested Friday, his lawyer told the AP, on charges of spreading misinformation. Prosecutors said he was jailed for reporting about alleged Russian war crimes in the Ukrainian city of Bucha.
The three journalists jailed in recent days are all Russian citizens.

Israel ‘undoubtedly’ committing genocide says Holocaust scholar Amos Goldberg
Israeli researcher from Hebrew University argues that what is happening in Gaza does not need to resemble the Holocaust to qualify as genocide
"A professor of Holocaust history at the Hebrew University in Jerusalem, Amos Goldberg, has said that Israel is committing genocide in Gaza.
In an opinion piece published by The Palestine Project, he argued that the scale of killing and destruction inflicted by Israel on Gaza, constitutes a “deliberate crushing of Palestinian existence in Gaza”.
“It’s so difficult and painful to admit it, but despite all that… we can no longer avoid this conclusion. Jewish history will be henceforth stained,” Goldberg said."

Pelosi Accuses MSNBC Host of Being “Apologist for Donald Trump”
Former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) accused MSNBC’s Katy Tur of being an “apologist” for former President Trump on Monday (April 29).
During an appearance on the network, Pelosi touted President Biden’s record on the economy, saying, he “created 9 million jobs in his term in office. Donald Trump has the worst record of job loss of any president. So we just have to make sure people know.”
Tur briefly interjected, telling Pelosi “there was a global pandemic” during Trump’s presidency.
Pelosi paused, looking shocked, before shooting back at Tur that “he had the worst record of any president. We’ve had other concerns in our country.”
“If you want to be an apologist for Donald Trump, that may be your role, but it ain’t mine,” she added.
Tur pressed back, saying, “I don’t think anyone can accuse me of that.”

"A Shadow of What I Was": Dad Who Suffered Brain Injury Days After Getting COVID Vaccine Sues AstraZeneca - Sky News
🇬🇧💉@COVID19Up: A dad who suffered a brain injury just days after receiving a British-developed COVID vaccine has told Sky News he would never have had the jab if he had known of the risk of rare but serious side effects.
Jamie Scott, who has two young boys and is now unable to work, is suing AstraZeneca for what he says is damage caused by the jab in April 2021. He alleges the pharmaceutical giant exaggerated the vaccine's effectiveness and downplayed its risks.
In his first TV interview, Mr Scott told Sky News: "I took it to protect the elderly people around me."
"AstraZeneca and the government need to explain the risk whenever you take medicine. If there's a risk—I've got a young family—I would never have taken it."
Ten days after having his first dose of the vaccine, Scott woke up with a severe headache, started vomiting and had trouble speaking.
He was taken to hospital where he was diagnosed with a clot that was stopping blood draining from his brain, as well as a hemorrhage in the brain itself. Scott had surgery and was in a coma for just over a month. His wife Kate was told that if he survived he would never be the same again.
Scott now has a poor memory, has trouble reading, writing, listening and speaking, is partially blind in both eyes and suffers from pain and fatigue. He says he can't drive or play an active part in his boys' lives.
"Everything about me has changed. Everything is difficult," he said.
"I am happy to be alive. But I'm a shadow of what I was and every day is difficult."

Scoop: Congress Threatens ICC Over Israeli Arrest Warrants
Mike Johnson called for the Biden admin to "use every available tool to prevent such an abomination.
The International Criminal Court is being warned by members of Congress in both parties that arrest warrants for senior Israeli officials will be met with U.S. retaliation — and legislation to that effect is already in the works, Axios has learned.
Why it matters: Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has gone so far as to urge President Biden to intervene to help prevent the warrants, Axios' Barak Ravid reported.
- The ICC has been investigating allegations of war crimes against both the Israeli military and Palestinian militia groups dating back to 2014.
- The White House declined to comment on Netanyahu's call with Biden but said "the ICC has no jurisdiction in this situation and we do not support its investigation."
Driving the news: House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) issued a statement on Monday calling the reported warrants "disgraceful" and "lawless."
"If unchallenged by the Biden administration, the ICC could create and assume unprecedented power to issue arrest warrants against American political leaders, American diplomats, and American military personnel," Johnson said.
Johnson called for the Biden administration to "immediately and unequivocally demand that the ICC stand down" and "use every available tool to prevent such an abomination."
