UAE, Ukraine Announce ‘Historic‘ Trade Deal
Emirati officials say the UAE is looking to Ukraine as its gateway into Europe
The UAE and Ukraine have concluded talks for a bilateral trade deal, according to a statement released on 29 April, ahead of the official signing.
The two countries finalized a Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA). Ukrainian Deputy Prime Minister Yulia Svyrydenko described it via social media as “the first agreement of its kind in the Middle East, covering not just [the UAE] but the entire region. The deal cuts trade barriers and boosts investment, leading to more jobs and economic growth.”
The CEPA seeks to remove or reduce taxes on various goods and products and ease the barrier to market access for exporters from Kiev and Abu Dhabi.
CEPA will also “support Ukraine’s recovery and the rebuilding of key industries and infrastructure, while also helping to strengthen supply chains to the [Middle East and North Africa] region for major exports such as grains, machinery, and metals.”
Non-oil trade between Abu Dhabi and Kiev reached $386 million in 2023, down from over $800 million before the Russia–Ukraine war started in 2022.
UAE Minister of State for Foreign Trade Thani bin Ahmed al-Zeyoudi said in an interview that the drop is not unique to the UAE but reflects similar trends across the region and the world over.
“We want to be ready for the next era of Ukraine,” Zeyoudi said. “It [the CEPA] is an important step for us to have another gateway to Europe through Ukraine.”
In a social media post, Zeyoudi said that “this is a major deal for both nations,” adding, “while Ukraine offers the UAE a bridge into Europe, the UAE provides a global gateway for Ukraine’s exports.”

Ukraine Army Chief Admits 'Tactical' Retreat Underway
The Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine Oleksandr Syrskyi has just issued a new dire assessment confirming widespread international reports that Ukraine forces are getting beaten back from the frontlines.
He has confirmed that his outnumbered troops have fallen back to new positions on the eastern front, west of the villages of Berdychi and Semenivka, outside of Avdiivka—and near Novomykhailivka. Gen. Syrskyi has essentially admitted for the first time that a 'tactical' retreat is underway.
"The situation at the front has worsened," Syrskii wrote on Telegram, ironically coming just days after President Biden signed into effect a $61 billion defense aid package for Ukraine. The Pentagon has vowed to ship new weapons as fast as possible, while some Ukrainian officials have been warning that it is too little, too late.
"In general, the enemy achieved certain tactical successes in these areas, but could not gain operational advantages," Syrskii said, noting too that Russia has been able to pour additional manpower into the east with ease.

Israel Dismisses US Call to Investigate Mass Grave Discovered at Gaza Hospital
Israel has rejected a US call for an investigation into a mass grave that was discovered at Nasser Hospital in the southern Gaza city of Khan Younis.
US officials have said they want Israel to investigate the situation itself and has not backed international calls for an independent investigation. When asked by POLITICO if Israel would conduct an investigation, Israeli military spokesman Nadav Shoshani said, “Investigate what?”
Shoshani said the military had already cleared itself of any wrongdoing. “We gave answers. We don’t bury people in mass graves. Not something we do,” he said.
Israel’s story is that a mass grave was already there when its troops showed up and that its forces dug up the bodies to look for Israeli hostages, then returned them to the ground. But Gaza’s Civil Defense agency said only about 100 people were buried at the hospital before the Israeli raid, and a total of 392 bodies have been discovered.
Gaza’s Civil Defense said some children were found in the mass grave, some bodies had their hands in restraints, and there were signs of torture.

Columbia University leadership asked protesters to voluntarily leave their encampment on Monday (April 29) afternoon or risk suspension.
Tensions have escalated at universities across the country with Columbia under the spotlight since its leadership called the New York Police Department to break up pro-Palestinian protesters' encampments.
Students who don't abide by Columbia's mandates will become ineligible to graduate this spring or participate in academic and extracurricular activities.
Students are asked to voluntarily leave by 2pm and sign a form committing to abide by university policies through June 30, 2025, or by their graduation.
"Sanctions include probation, access restriction, suspension for a term or more and expulsion," per a Monday notice from the university.

Robert F. Kennedy Jr. hit back at former President Trump following his “barely coherent” rant on Truth Social on Friday (April 26) night targeting the independent presidential candidate.
“When frightened men take to social media they risk descending into vitriol, which makes them sound unhinged,” Kennedy said Saturday (April 27) in a post on the social platform X. “President Trump’s rant against me is a barely coherent barrage of wild and inaccurate claims that should best be resolved in the American tradition of presidential debate.”
Kennedy’s rebuttal comes as Trump went after the independent White House candidate in a series of Truth Social posts published Friday. The former president argued the independent candidate's views on vaccines are "fake" and has been inserted in the field to help President Biden.

The British government is refusing to reveal how a large part of the billions in weaponry it is sending to Ukraine is being spent. The policy raises particular concerns following revelations it is supplying depleted uranium ammunition to Ukraine.
“A significant proportion of our lethal aid [for Ukraine] is procured overseas and for both operational and commercial reasons, the detail of these contracts will not be published,” the Ministry of Defence (MoD) has told parliament.
The announcement raises suspicion that Britain is sending more controversial weaponry to Ukraine that it does not want made public.
Declassified first reported last week that the UK was sending ammunition containing depleted uranium to Ukraine.
Vladimir Putin, Russian president, responded by announcing he would station tactical nuclear weapons in neighbouring Belarus.
The MoD said the only contracts it will publish will be those with British companies for equipment replenishing existing stockpiles.
It is unclear which foreign companies the government does not want to reveal its contracts with—or what weapons systems they are for.
The UK provided £2.4bn in military equipment to Ukraine in 2022 – more than any country other than the United States. It has committed to providing the same amount in 2023.
The UK has supplied 10,000 anti-tank weapons, including 5,500 NLAWs, which are designed by Saab in Sweden and made by French arms manufacturer Thales in Belfast. The UK has also provided Javelin and Brimstone missiles.
UK lethal aid to Ukraine has also included thousands of surface to air missiles including Starstreak, again produced by Thales.
“The UK arms export regime is defined by a chronic lack of transparency,” Katie Fallon, advocacy manager at Campaign Against the Arms Trade (CAAT), told Declassified.
“That the public might never know how a large part of the weaponry budgeted for Ukraine is being spent, not only raises the risk of corruption, profiteering and procurement of inappropriate equipment, but it also reduces the ability of the UK public to provide badly needed scrutiny of government actions taken in their name.”

Twitter Files journalist Michael Shellenberger, who has recently been covering the public clash between X owner Elon Musk and the President of Brazil’s Superior Electoral Court (TSE) and Supreme Federal Court (STF) justice Alexandre de Moraes, is now likely to himself be targeted by one of those courts, the STF.
If the court starts a criminal prosecution against Shellenberger, it will be at the request of Brazil’s Attorney General Jorge Messias, who claims that there is information proving that the US journalist has committed a “probable crime” against the rule of law and institutions, along with an “attempt to destabilize the democratic state.”
Messias further accuses Shellenberger of disclosing confidential information related to the events of January 8, 2023.
The memo sent to STF says that the journalist on April 3 published, as part of the Twitter Files that concern Brazil, a number of emails exchanged by the court and X employees, which are referred to as “confidential files.”
And, of course, Shellenberger is “guilty” of making accusations against Moraes, Messias wrote, remarking that the journalist—“attributes authoritarian and anti-democratic measures” to the STF justice.
Shellenberger has denied these claims made against him, in turn describing Messias’ move as an “abuse of power,” urging the country’s Congress to investigate and finally end such conduct, and noting that in a democracy, there is no law against “destabilizing the democratic state” through non-violent means.

Attorneys Inside the Biden Administration Urge U.S. to Cut Off Israel
A group of at least 90 lawyers, including 20 who work in the Biden administration, are urging President Biden to cut off military aid to Israel because its slaughter in Gaza doesn’t comply with US and international law.
The attorneys will make their case in a letter to Attorney General Merrick Garland that was obtained by POLITICO. They argue in the letter that Israel has violated the Arms Export Control Act, the Leahy Laws, and the Geneva Convention.
“The law is clear and aligned with the majority of Americans who believe the US should cease arms shipments to Israel until it stops its military operation in Gaza,” the letter reads, citing polling data that shows Biden voters support ending military aid to Israel.
The letter’s supporters include lawyers from the Departments of State, Homeland Security, Justice, Labor, and Energy. The letter is still being circulated, so the number of signatories could increase.
“This is a moment where the US government is violating its own laws and policy,” a Justice Department staffer who signed the letter told POLITICO.
