Top IDF Commander in WCK Aid Strike Wanted to Block Humanitarian Supplies Into Gaza

Investigation shows officer signed a letter to Israel’s War Cabinet demanding a ‘siege’ of Gaza City

The most senior IDF commander dismissed for his role in the drone strike which killed seven aid workers in Gaza is a settler who signed an open letter in January calling for the territory to be deprived of aid, The Telegraph can reveal.

A senior British lawyer said its contents – including a call for a “siege” of Gaza City – should be considered by the Israeli authorities investigating the killings.

Col (Res) Nochi Mandel, the chief of staff of the Nahal Infantry Brigade, was one of two officers dismissed last week following the incident in which three vehicles belonging to the charity World Central Kitchen (WCK) were attacked by drones, killing all those inside, including three Britons.

An investigation by the Israeli Defence Forces (IDF) characterised the strikes as a “grave mistake” but concluded there was no intentional harm. “Those who approved the strike were convinced that they were targeting armed Hamas operatives and not WCK employees,” it said.

In the letter, Col Mandel, a religious nationalist who lives in a settlement in the occupied West Bank, called with more than 130 other reserve officers and commanders for the flow of aid into Gaza to be restricted.

...The letter was sent on January 20 to the Israeli War Cabinet and the IDF chief of staff and implored them to “do everything in your power” not to allow “humanitarian supplies and the operation of hospitals inside Gaza City” following its evacuation.

...Michael Mansfield KC, head of Nexus Chambers and one of Britain’s leading barristers, said the letter should “absolutely” be considered by those investigating the incident.

“The document is plainly relevant to a particular state of mind,”
Mr Mansfield said. “In other words it is not indicating that the target of the Israeli army is primarily Hamas but Gaza as a whole by weaponising aid under siege conditions."

Iran Attack Puts Israeli Rafah Invasion on Ice: Report

An Israeli military response to Iran's attack would take resources away from continuing the genocide in Gaza

Israel was on the verge of launching a ground offensive on the Gazan city of Rafah but delayed the campaign after Iran launched a massive retaliatory attack on Israel over the weekend, CNN reported on 15 April.

Citing Israeli sources, CNN reported that the Israeli Air Force was set to begin dropping leaflets on parts of Rafah on Monday in preparation for a ground offensive into Rafah – Gaza’s southernmost city where more than 1 million displaced Palestinians are sheltering from Israel’s six-month bombing campaign.

Those plans were allegedly halted after Iran launched an attack of some 300 missiles and drones toward Israel late Saturday. Most were intercepted by Israeli anti-missile systems, but several missiles successfully penetrated Israel’s vaunted defenses and hit a key military base and intelligence collection center.

Israel’s war cabinet spent Sunday and Monday debating a possible response to the Iranian attack...

CNN wrote that according to one Israeli official, “Israel remains determined to carry out a ground offensive in Rafah, although the timing of civilian evacuations and the coming ground offensive remains unclear at the moment.”

The Israeli military declined to comment.

Netanyahu has publicly threatened to invade Rafah for months, claiming it is necessary to dismantle Hamas’s remaining battalions. UN officials and aid workers have warned an invasion of the border city would result in a “bloodbath” due to the roughly 1.4 million civilians concentrated there, including many living in tents and with no safe place to flee.

💸 Bank of Japan Brings Negative Rate Experiment to a Close

It was bad for society and only helped the central planners to consolidate. But what does it mean for the economy?

For those who believe that interest rates are a key driving force in the economy and markets the higher rates provided however few reasons to fret: while higher rates are often said to slow economic growth, the Bank of Japan only raised rates from –0.1% to the range of zero to 0.1%. Not earth-shattering.

But there are those – like myself – who have said many years ago that negative or zero interest rates are not a good idea: instead of stimulating the economy, they do the opposite: They impose a penalty on the banks and this usually has negative consequences for the customers of banks, especially those key players in the economy that employ the majority of the workforce in the country, namely small and medium-sized enterprises: it is well-established in the economic research literature that the small firms are largely dependent on borrowing from banks for external funding.

Israel To Take ‘Less Aggressive’ Approach to Iran Response: Report

The US believes Israel may choose to target 'Iranian proxies' such as Hezbollah in Syria rather than directly attack Iranian territory

Washington believes Israel’s response to Iran’s massive drone and missile strike will be “limited” and will focus on targets outside of Iranian territory, US officials said on 16 April.

Four US officials told NBC that they expect the Israeli response “to be limited in scope and most likely involve strikes against Iranian military forces and Iranian-backed proxies outside Iran.”

The assessment is based on talks between Israeli and US officials prior to Operation True Promise, which saw hundreds of Iranian drones and missiles target Israeli military sites late on 13 April and into the following morning.

“As Israel was preparing for a possible Iranian attack last week, Israeli officials briefed US officials about possible response options,”
the officials added.

However, the officials emphasized that they have not been informed about any final decision and that Tel Aviv’s plans for a response may have shifted since the Iranian operation took place.

Israel had been debating what a potential retaliation to its strike on Iran’s consulate would look like last week, as well as possible Israeli responses to the retaliation – which “ranged from no military action to strikes inside Iran,” NBC said.

Japan’s Yen Sinks To Fresh 34-Year Low Against Dollar

The yen dropped to the mid-154 range against the dollar on Monday, touching the lowest level since June 1990 as speculation about early U.S. interest rate cuts receded amid persistent inflation.

The dollar is rising against a broad range of currencies in the face of a strong U.S. economy. Betting that the situation in the Middle East is unlikely to deteriorate quickly, speculators are building up short yen positions, hastening the Japanese currency's fall.

..."Given the Bank of Japan's moves, the U.S.-Japan interest rate gap is unlikely to shrink anytime soon," said a currency trader at a Japanese bank, adding that "yen carry trades will continue for sometime."

In a carry trade, an investor borrows a currency carrying low interest rates and invests the money in a high-yielding currency.

Israel Hinders UN Query Into 7 Oct Events

An independent investigation into Hamas' alleged atrocities during Operation Al-Aqsa Flood might address reports Israel killed many of its own civilians and soldiers under the Hannibal Directive.

A UN-mandated commission of inquiry probing violations of international human rights law accused Israel on 16 April of obstructing its efforts to collect evidence from the victims of Hamas' attack on Israeli military bases and settlements on 7 October.

"So far as the government of Israel is concerned, we have not only seen a lack of cooperation but active obstruction of our efforts to receive evidence from Israeli witnesses and victims to the events that occurred in southern Israel,"
said Chris Sidoti, a member of a commission of inquiry established to investigate human rights abuses committed in Israel and the occupied Palestinian territories.

"We have contact with many, but we would like to have contact with more."

Sidoti pleaded with the Israeli government, as well as victims and witnesses of the attack, to cooperate with the commission to conduct its investigation.

According to Israel, Hamas killed 1,200 Israeli soldiers and civilians on 7 October while carrying out horrific atrocities, including beheading babies.

But rather than aid in an investigation that might confirm Israeli claims, Israel's diplomatic mission in Geneva said the victims would "never get any justice or the dignified treatment they deserve from the Commission of Inquiry and its members," describing the Commission as having "a track record of antisemitic and anti-Israel statements."

Israeli officials may fear a thorough and independent investigation of the events of 7 October due to clear evidence that allegations of Hamas atrocities were fabricated and that Israeli forces themselves killed many, if not most, of the Israeli civilians who died that day.

Israeli forces used attack helicopters, tanks, and drones to fire missiles and high-caliber machine guns to devastate their own settlements (kibbutzim), military bases, and border areas to repel the Hamas assault.

Under the Hannibal Directive, this included Israeli forces killing their own civilians and soldiers, including burning many alive, to prevent Hamas from taking them captive back to Gaza. Hamas had taken the Israelis captive to leverage the release of the thousands of Palestinian captives in Israeli jails and to demand that Israel lift its 17-year siege of Gaza.

Court Finds North Carolina Gov. Roy Cooper Violated Constitutional Rights of Bars Over ‘Different Reopening Standards’ During Pandemic

The North Carolina Court of Appeals ruled on Tuesday that Gov. Roy Cooper’s continued closure of some bars but not of restaurants in 2020 during the COVID-19 pandemic was “irrational” and not based on “science and data.”

On Tuesday, the North Carolina Court of Appeals issued a ruling in the North Carolina Bar and Tavern Association’s case against Gov. Roy Cooper. The court ruled that Cooper “violated” the association’s right to “equal protection” under the law, a right afforded in Article I of the North Carolina Constitution.

On March 17, 2020, Cooper issued Executive Order No. 118 which closed all bars, including those inside restaurants.

A couple months later, on May 20, 2020, Cooper issued Executive Order No. 141 which allowed some types of bars to reopen with specific safety precautions in place but required private bars to stay closed.

Executive Order No. 141 states: “[B]y their very nature, [bars] present greater risks of the spread of COVID-19. These greater risks are due to factors such as people traditionally interacting in that space in a way that would spread COVID-19 …. or a business model that involves customers or attendees remaining in a confined indoor space over a sustained period.”

Cooper’s attorneys said he based his decision on “science and data” when determining which types of bars would be closed.

“Our careful review of the Record does not reveal the existence of any scientific evidence demonstrating Plaintiffs’ bars, as opposed to the bars located in other establishments serving alcohol, posed a heightened risk at the time Executive Order No. 141 was issued,
” Judge April C. Wood wrote in a 39-page opinion. “Overall, the articles and data submitted by Defendant entirely fail to address any differences in the risk of spread of COVID-19 between the bars he allowed to reopen and Plaintiffs’ bars which remained closed.”

Wood claims Cooper based his decisions on news articles and reports of various incidents around the world.

“None of the information addresses any differences in risk of COVID-19 transmission between Plaintiffs’ bars and the other types of bars allowed to reopen,
” Wood wrote.

According to Wood, Cooper did not submit evidence detailing why the plaintiff in the lawsuit, the North Carolina Bar and Tavern Association, could not have reopened under the same requirements under which other establishments serving alcohol were allowed to reopen as part of Executive Order No. 141.

“It is illogical and arbitrary to attempt to achieve Defendant’s stated health outcomes by applying different reopening standards to similarly situated businesses that could have complied with those standards,”
Wood wrote. “In other words, if restaurants serving alcohol could operate at fifty percent capacity and keep groups six feet apart with both food and alcohol at the customers’ tables, Defendant has failed to present any forecast of evidence of any reason bars would not be able to do the same with alcohol service.”

The New Arab:

According to an unnamed Egyptian source and an American diplomat, the US administration has agreed to a limited Israeli attack on Iran in exchange for an operation in Rafah. The Israelis, who claim that four Hamas brigades remain in the southern city, have begun preparations for the operation.

The plan is said to rely on a method of displacement, dividing Rafah into four sections, forcing those in the city to move north towards Khan Younis and Al-Mawasi. It is said that the Egyptian Red Crescent will help facilitate this plan by setting up tents there to receive people.

According to the Israeli war ministry and the military, the military has stolen a total of 29 million shekels ($7.6 million) in cash from the Gaza Strip, and "forfeited" it to the Bank of Israel.

The cash was taken from what the military claims are “Hamas strongholds and homes of operatives.”
