According to an Iranian diplomatic source who spoke to Al-Akhbar on 10 April, Iran has suggested it would abandon plans for a response to the Israeli attack on its consulate in Damascus if Israel agrees to a ceasefire and calls off plans for a Rafah Operation.

The source added that Israel is trying to instigate a direct confrontation between Iran and the US, and that recent indirect communications between Tehran and Washington have been aimed at containing such a scenario.

Scoop: Senior U.S General To Visit Israel To Coordinate on Iran Attack Threat

The senior U.S. military commander in charge of the Middle East is expected to go to Israel Thursday to coordinate around a possible attack on Israel by Iran and its proxies, two Israeli officials said.

Why it matters: Iranian officials have publicly threatened to retaliate against Israel for an attack in Syria last week that killed a top Iranian general. An attack on Israel or its bases could lead to another regional escalation.

Gen. Erik Kurilla, commander of the U.S. Central Command, is expected to meet Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant and senior Israel Defense Forces officials.

Israeli officials say they are preparing for a possible unprecedented direct attack from Iranian soil using ballistic missiles, drones and cruise missiles against Israeli targets.

In such a scenario, Israel will retaliate with a direct attack against Iran, the officials said.

A U.S. defense official said it was Department of Defense policy to "not discuss flag officer travel for operational security."

Catch up quick: An Israeli strike on Damascus last week killed Brig. Gen. Mohammad Reza Zahedi, a top Iranian Quds Force general in charge of Iran's military operations in Lebanon and Syria.

Zahedi was the most senior Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps officer to be killed since the U.S. assassinated Qasem Soleimani in 2020.

Zahedi was killed along with other Iranian officers in an Israeli strike on a building adjacent to the Iranian Embassy in Damascus.

The Iranians claim the building was a consulate and said the strike is an attack on its soil in violation of international law.

Israeli officials claim it was not a diplomatic facility but a building used by the IRGC for military operations.

AstraZeneca Ordered to Disclose Data Regarding Its COVID Vaccine

🇬🇧💉
@COVID19Up: Following the authorization of the coronavirus vaccine developed by the British-Swedish company AstraZeneca, concerning reports emerged. The vaccine, known as “Vaxzevria,” was associated with severe side effects in extremely rare instances.

Some individuals vaccinated experienced thrombosis in the brain or abdominal organs, resulting in fatalities. Initially believed to predominantly affect young women, the vaccine was initially advised only for individuals over 60 in Germany and later not recommended at all.

Questions arose regarding what AstraZeneca knew about these occurrences and whether they could have been prevented. A woman from Upper Franconia, who suffered from thrombosis in the intestine and fell into a coma after receiving the AstraZeneca vaccine in March 2021, demanded not only compensation from the pharmaceutical company but also the disclosure of documents from the clinical trials.

A partial victory was achieved by the woman before the Bamberg Higher Regional Court. On Monday (April 8), a civil chamber ruled that the company must provide comprehensive information regarding all known effects and side effects of its coronavirus vaccine, specifically those relevant to the plaintiff’s clinical condition. This encompassed any additional findings gathered between the vaccine’s approval in December 2020 and February 2024.

The clinical condition of the plaintiff is referred to as “thrombosis with thrombocytopenia syndrome” (TTS). This severe thrombosis, occurring extremely rarely not only after vaccinations with AstraZeneca’s COVID vaccine but also with the similar vaccine from Johnson & Johnson, is accompanied by a decrease in blood platelets. It appears to stem from antibodies formed post-vaccination attacking the blood platelets. Both AstraZeneca and Johnson & Johnson’s COVID vaccines are based on modified cold viruses.

According to an 11 April report by Israeli newspaper Yedioth Ahronoth, the world’s largest Muslim country, Indonesia, has begun moving towards normalizing ties with Israel, in exchange for membership in the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD).

The report claims that discreet negotiations have been taking place between the parties over the last three months.

In a letter to Foreign Minister Israel Katz, Secretary-General Mathias Cormann of the OECD wrote, "I am pleased to announce the Council has officially agreed to the clear and explicit early conditions according to which Indonesia must establish diplomatic relations with all OECD member countries before any decision is made to admit it to the OECD.”

Founded in 1961, the OECD is an intergovernmental organization committed to “democracy and free market economy." Its member states are considered “high income" or developed economies that form 62% of global nominal GDP.

Membership in the OECD requires consensus from all 38 member states.

As part of the agreement, Indonesia must undergo an extensive process prior to joining the organization, involving 26 committees to examine legislation, policies, and regulations in the country. Each committee will include an Israeli “expert,” giving Israel systematic veto power over Indonesia’s membership, should it fail to normalize ties with Israel.

SEC Moves Against Decentralized Finance, Targets Uniswap

SEC's latest enforcement notice targets decentralized crypto exchange, sparking legal tussle and DeFi industry concerns.

The US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) has delivered an enforcement notice to Uniswap, a decentralized cryptocurrency exchange.

Known as a Wells notice, the enforcement wrangle points toward a future legal dispute between the regulatory body and Uniswap, reflecting its reputation as a precursor to enforcement actions.

The enforcement notice is seen as a move against decentralized finance (DeFi) for several reasons. First, this action signifies increased regulatory scrutiny on DeFi platforms, which fundamentally operate on principles of decentralization and less regulatory oversight. The SEC’s focus on Uniswap, particularly on issues surrounding the classification of its native token UNI and its operation as a potential unregistered securities market, suggests an attempt to apply traditional financial regulatory frameworks to DeFi.

DeFi platforms like Uniswap offer an alternative to traditional financial systems by enabling financial transactions without central intermediaries, using blockchain technology. This enforcement notice challenges the very nature of such platforms, potentially leading to stricter regulations that could limit their decentralized nature.

Uniswap’s leadership, viewing this as an attack on the broader DeFi space, indicates a perceived threat to the industry’s future, especially if tokens and platforms are subjected to traditional securities laws. This scenario could lead to increased compliance costs and operational changes for DeFi entities, impacting their decentralized and open nature.

🚨BREAKING: US Cyber Agency Says Russian Hackers Used Microsoft Access To Steal Government Emails

The U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency said Russian government-backed hackers have used their access to Microsoft's (MSFT.O), opens new tab email system to steal correspondence between officials and the tech giant, an emergency directive, opens new tab by the U.S. watchdog released on Thursday showed.

In the directive dated April 2, the agency warned that hackers were exploiting authentication details shared by email to try to break into Microsoft's customer systems, including those of an unspecified number of government agencies.

The warning that government agencies are being targeted using stolen Microsoft emails follows the company's announcement in March that it was still wrestling with the intruders, which it nicknames "Midnight Blizzard."

That disclosure, which set alarm bells ringing across the cybersecurity industry, was followed just last week by a report from the U.S. Cyber Safety Review Board which said that a separate hack - blamed on China - had been preventable, faulting the company for cybersecurity lapses and a deliberate lack of transparency.

Over 13,000 Missing in Unmarked Graves Across Gaza

Rescue teams in the strip are in dire need of international help in providing equipment to remove bodies from underneath the rubble

Over 13,000 Palestinians have gone missing since the start of Israel’s war on the Gaza Strip, the Euro-Mediterranean Human Rights Monitor said in a report released on 11 April.

This includes Palestinians trapped under the rubble of buildings destroyed by airstrikes, as well as those who have been forcibly disappeared and detained, or left buried in unmarked mass graves.

In the report, Euro-Med called for “urgent international action to provide specialized teams and equipment to remove the rubble of homes and buildings bombed by Israeli army forces, rescue people trapped under its rubble who may still be alive, and recover thousands of bodies of others who died underneath since the start of the military attack on October 7.”

“This estimate is based on the volume of initial reports of missing persons … It is difficult to estimate the true numbers of missing persons at this stage, given the continuing Israeli military attacks and the siege of many areas in which the Israeli army carries out its operations
,” the report added.

It also condemned Israel’s policy of forcible displacement against Palestinians in the strip.

Last weekend, Israeli forces withdrew a significant bulk of troops from the Gaza Strip, leaving a limited number of forces in the strip to maintain control over the Netzarim corridor – which cuts Gaza in half and effectively prevents the return of displaced to the north.

The US has asked a number of countries, including China, Turkiye, and Saudi Arabia, to urge the Islamic Republic against retaliating to Israel’s attack on its consulate in Damascus.

US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken discussed the topic with several officials over the week, including Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi.

“We have also engaged with European allies and partners over the past few days and urged them as well to send a clear message to Iran: that escalation is not in Iran’s interest, it’s not in the region’s interest and it’s not in the world’s interest,” State Department spokesman Mathew Miller said on 11 April.

Blinken also spoke to the foreign ministers of Turkiye and Saudi Arabia and told them to “urge Iran not to escalate."
While speaking with Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant, Blinken expressed Washington’s “strong support for Israel against these threats," Miller added.

“Washington has informed allies that Iran’s retaliation could be imminent,” an informed source told Financial Times (FT). Another source told FT that the US believes a direct Iranian strike on Israel is possible.

According to sources who spoke with Lebanese newspaper Al-Akhbar, Iran is “proposing the following:

If a ceasefire is reached in Gaza and Israel does not attack the city of Rafah, it is ready, in order to reduce escalation and tension, not to take any action against Israel at the present time.” The sources said there has been no response to this proposal.

They added that Israel is attempting to get out of the “impasse” it faces in Gaza by “provoking new crises” and trying to drag Iran and the US into direct confrontation.

No Consensus for Palestinian Statehood at UNSC

The Palestinian Authority resubmitted its application for membership last week, with Algeria potentially being at the helm of an upcoming vote

The UN Security Council failed on 11 April to reach a consensus on full UN membership for Palestine, which has held observer status since 2012.

Just a week earlier, the Palestinian government in Ramallah reapplied for full UN membership, resulting in a formal review process at the Security Council.

Malta’s ambassador to the UN, Vanessa Frazier – the temporary president of the council for the current month – said “there was no consensus” at the meeting, which took place behind closed doors. She added, however, that two-thirds of the members supported full Palestinian membership, without specifying which countries.

Diplomatic sources told AFP that a vote on the matter may be held on 18 April, and led by Algeria, the representative of Arab states on the council.

The Palestinian ambassador to the UN told reporters earlier in the week: “All we ask for is to take our rightful place among the community of nations.” Mansour sent a letter last week to UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres to resubmit the application.

The Palestinian Authority (PA) has been requesting statehood and full recognition at the UN for years. It had first applied for full membership in 2011 before the bid stalled.

“We’ve lost. Truth must be told … It’s no fun to admit that we’ve lost, so we lie to ourselves.”

Renowned Israeli journalist Chaim Levinson published a piece in Haaretz titled, ‘Saying What Can’t Be Said: Israel Has Been Defeated – A Total Defeat.’

“Hamas will not be eradicated. The hostages will not be returned through military pressure. Security will not be reestablished.”

To Levinson, Israel is being “held hostage by the worst leadership in the country’s history” and currently “has no diplomatic exit.”

The hostages in Gaza will never return, and Israel will not regain its security. He cites lies, procrastination, deceit and denial in dealing with the war.

He also points out that Israelis may not be able to safely return to the northern border following Hezbollah’s cross border attacks. The public is being deceived into thinking action will be taken against Hezbollah, but “the deadline keeps being pushed back.”

As for the Rafah invasion, Levinson calls it the “newest bluff” – and that by the time it actually happens (if it happens), “the actual event will have lost its significance.”

Al-Mayadeen Journalists Come Under Israeli Fire in South Lebanon

Over 130 journalists have been killed by Israeli forces in Lebanon and the Gaza Strip since the war began in October

Israeli forces at the Misgav Am military site on Lebanon’s southern border opened fire at several Lebanese journalists on 12 April.

An Al-Mayadeen crew was driving a vehicle marked with the word PRESS on the Al-Adaisseh road when the car was struck by several Israeli army bullets.

Israeli troops also opened fire at civilian cars along the same road, the outlet’s correspondent reported, adding that the attacks were witnessed by UNIFIL forces. No injuries were reported in the incident.

This was not the first time Al-Mayadeen journalists were attacked by the Israeli army.

In November 2023, correspondent Farah Omar and her colleagues Rabie al-Maamari and Hussein Aqeel were killed in an Israeli airstrike in the town of Tair Harfa, southern Lebanon. At the start of the war the month before, Reuters photographer Issam Abdullah was killed by Israeli tank shelling in the southern Lebanese village of Alma al-Shaab.

Over 130 journalists have been killed by Israel in Gaza and Lebanon since the start of the war in October.

Israeli MK Says There Are Secret Plans To Establish Israeli Settlements in Gaza

Israeli MKs and ministers have been open about their desire to establish new settlements in Gaza

Limor Son Har-Melech, a member of the Israeli Knesset and the hardline Jewish Power party, has said there are secret Israeli plans to establish settlements in the Gaza Strip, The New Arab reported on Wednesday.

Har-Melech told the Israeli Knesset’s TV channel that there was “a vision for the day after (the war on Gaza), and the only optimistic vision is the renewal of the settlement of Gaza. Of course this will happen in stages, I think this will happen whether we like it or not.”

She said that she was “speaking about secret matters because we can see the large opposition (from external parties).” She added that starting in the next session of the Israeli Knesset, “you will see practical steps, including plans, and work in government offices and security services. There is intensive work behind the scenes on this.”

Other members of the Israeli Knesset and ministers in the government of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu have not been shy about their desire to re-establish settlements in Gaza. In January, 12 ministers and 15 MKs attended a conference on the settlement of Gaza.

Itamar Ben-Gvir, Israel’s minister of national security and the leader of the Jewish Power party, spoke at the conference and called for Netanyahu to take steps to allow for settlements. “If we don’t want another October 7, we need to go back home and control [Gaza]. We need to find a legal way to voluntarily emigrate [Palestinians] and impose death sentences on terrorists,” he said. “I turn to you, PM Netanyahu: this is time for brave decisions.”

Check out my latest article for TLAV:

Are the Violations of Mexican and Iranian Embassies a Sign of a ‘New Normal’ in Diplomatic Relations?

Recent actions taken by both the Israeli and Ecuadorian governments have called into question the sovereignty and sanctity of international embassies.

On April 1st, Israel launched missiles at the Iranian consulate in Damascus, Syria, killing seven military advisers, including a high-profile leader of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC). Iran’s ambassador to Syria noted that the strike hit a consulate building in the embassy compound.

On April 5, only days after Israel’s bombing of Iran’s embassy, Ecuadorean President Daniel Noboa broke diplomatic ties with Mexico and ordered Ecuadorian police to force their way into the Mexican embassy in Quito to arrest former Vice President Jorge Glas. Noboa’s decision to violate the sovereignty of Mexico’s embassy came in response to Mexico’s President Andrés Manuel López Obrador (AMLO) granting Glas asylum in Mexico as he fights off corruption charges.

An attack on Iran’s embassy — which is legally considered Iranian territory — is seen as a direct challenge of their sovereignty, especially because of the deaths of senior military officials.

Mexico called on Ecuador to issue a public apology acknowledging the “violations to the fundamental principles and norms of international law”. Mexico is also calling for the UN to secure the embassy and for Ecuador to allow Mexican officials to safely leave the diplomatic buildings and their private homes in Ecuador.

While the UN member states must approve any such action against Ecuador, the invasion of Mexico’s embassy is yet another sign that typical expectations of respecting national sovereignty may no longer be relevant.

Of course, this is not the first time that embassies have been attacked. It is also not the first time that international norms regarding national sovereignty have been violated.

Clearly, nations like the United States, Israel, Ecuador, and others are willing to violate the supposed sovereignty of nations when push comes to shove. Hopefully, the irony (and hypocrisy) of Israeli and the US governments complaining over violations of sovereignty and international law while they participate and fund genocide in Gaza is not lost on any of our readers.

Are we now in a “new normal” where nations will feel free to violate this allegedly “inviolable” space regardless of the potential outcomes?

Or, is the public finally recognizing that the imperialist, tyrannical nations of the world will, ultimately, always do what they want, international law and treaties be damned? More to the point, why should the public be expected to trust these nations which have made it clear they do not value individual sovereignty, freedom of choice, freedom of speech, or even human life?
