Morning Bid: Middle East Tensions Spook Markets

European stocks are in for a rocky start on Friday with futures pointing to the sharpest daily percentage fall in months, rattled by escalating tensions in the Middle East.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's comments that the country would harm "whoever harms us or plans to harm us" stoked fears of a wider war. Israel is bracing for the possibility of a retaliatory attack for Monday's presumed Israeli air strike on Iran's embassy.

That took the shine off Wall Street's stellar run in a late fall on Thursday, which left Asian shares a sea of red and sent oil prices jumping.
Europe's unlikely to be spared too, with the EURO STOXX 50 index futures already down more than 1.5% - a large move for Asian time.

Britain's FTSE futures likewise fell more than 1.4%.

The risk of a prolonged Israel-Hamas war - once overshadowed by the global rate cut cheer - has come back to the fore. That's proving to be a wild card for central bankers just as markets reassess their expectations of Federal Reserve rate cuts this year.

🚨BREAKING: UN Rights Body Demands Israel Be Held Accountable for Possible ‘War Crimes’, Calls for Halt to Weapons Shipments to Israel

UN Human Rights Council also backs call to halt all arms sales to Israel, highlighting warnings of ‘genocide’ in Gaza.

The United Nations Human Rights Council has adopted a resolution calling for Israel to be held accountable for possible war crimes and crimes against humanity committed in the Gaza Strip, and demanding a halt to all arms sales to the country.

Friday’s vote marked the first time that the UN’s top rights body has taken a position on the nearly six-month war, highlighting warnings of “genocide” in the conflict that has killed more than 33,000 people.

The resolution passed with 28 of the council’s 47 member states voting in favour. The United States and Germany were among the six countries that opposed it, while France, Albania and 11 other countries abstained.

The council said the vote was a necessary measure, among other things, “to prevent further violations of international humanitarian law and violations and abuses of human rights”.

It stressed that the International Court of Justice (ICJ) ruled in January “that there is a plausible risk of genocide” in Gaza, as it expressed “grave concern at reports of serious human rights violations … including of possible war crimes and crimes against humanity” in the enclave.

The World Court in March unanimously ordered Israel to take all the necessary and effective action to ensure basic food supplies arrive without delay to the territory, warning that Palestinians face worsening conditions and famine and starvation are spreading.

“Symbolically this is significant. This is the first time that the top human rights body had taken a position on this conflict. This is reflective of the unprecedented nature of this [conflict],” Marc Owen Jones, an associate professor on Middle Eastern studies at Hamad Bin Khalifa University in Qatar, told Al Jazeera.

The vote follows the UN Security Council’s passage of a resolution calling for a ceasefire in March.

While countries like Canada, the Netherlands, Japan, Spain and Belgium have suspended arms sales to Israel, several other Western nations continue to supply lethal weapons despite mounting criticism over the growing civilian casualties.

The United States has supplied the bulk of Israel’s defence requirements, including 2000-pound bunker buster bombs. This year, the US Congress also approved an additional $14bn military aid package to Israel.

The council resolution also condemned “the use of starvation of civilians as a method of warfare in Gaza”, where the UN has warned that famine is looming.

Scientists Still Baffled From Giant Human Skeletons up to 10 Feet Tall Decades After Initial Discovery

A series of mysterious giant skeletons up to 10 feet tall reportedly discovered in and around Nevada caves last century — dubbed the “Giants of Lovelock” — are still baffling scientists decades later.

The claims about supersized humans who roamed the area around Lovelock, a remote town 90 miles northeast of Reno, thousands of years ago are rooted in Native America lore, which tells of fierce, redheaded, pale-skinned giants who arrived from Central America by boat and attacked local tribes.

After years of war, the foreign invaders were chased into a cave and slaughtered en masse, according to stories passed down by the indigenous Paiute people.

Experts believe the tale of the giant warriors’ violent extermination is likely a legend, but reports of discoveries made in the area of Lovelock decades ago have continued to raise many unanswered questions.

The first foray into the Lovelock cave was made in 1911, when a pair of miners searching for guano, or bat excrement used as fertilizer, allegedly unearthed 60 human skeletons, including some measuring between 7 and 8 feet tall.

EU’s Plan To Mass Surveil Private Chats Has Leaked

A new version of controversial "chat control" regulation has leaked, revealing unchanged mass surveillance plans and threats to digital privacy.

The latest version of the proposed European Parliament (EP) and EU Council regulation to adopt new rules related to combating child sexual abuse has been made available online.

Despite its declared goal, the proposal, which first saw the light of day in May 2022 and is referred to by opponents as “chat control” is in fact a highly divisive draft of legislation that aims to accomplish the stated objective through mass surveillance of citizens’ private communications.

Now, the French site contexte.com has the full text of the newest version of the proposal – yet another controversial undertaking of the current, 6-month Belgian EU presidency. Judging by the leaked document, the key and most contentious components of “chat control” have not been changed.

German EP member (MEP) Patrick Breyer and long-time vocal critic of the proposal said on his blog that the text would be discussed by a law enforcement working party at the Council on Wednesday, with the target date for adoption being sometime in June.

California Governor Gavin Newsom Announces AI-Powered Surveillance Rollout

California's plan to boost safety with 480 new AI-powered cameras sparks concerns over mass surveillance and the erosion of privacy.

California Governor Gavin Newsom has announced that 480 new cameras are being installed “along freeways and in Oakland to make the area safer.”

Describing the cameras as “high tech,” the Democrat said in a video posted on X that this will “help law enforcement identify vehicles linked to crimes using real-time information and alerts.”

What Newsom was talking about are Flock Safety’s cameras that critics say are used to create AI-powered mass surveillance networks that keep a very close eye on movement but also the behavior of people caught in its “sights.”

Flock is in the business of automatic number plate recognition tech, primarily sold to law enforcement, that can be installed even in areas with no electricity by using solar panels. The real-time component stems from Flock using databases of cars “marked” in advance, while the cameras’ connection to phone towers means the police and federal agencies can be alerted to their location instantly.

In addition to raising the issue of mass surveillance as such, and how even nominally democratic governments can swiftly descend into authoritarianism (see: pandemic restrictions), something that is vastly aided by said surveillance, there is also the question of the veracity of the claims of the effectiveness of systems like that currently touted by Governor Newsom.

Blinken: Israel Becoming ‘Indistinguishable’ From Hamas

America’s top diplomat says Israel must allow aid shipments to Gaza to meet US demands

Secretary of State Antony Blinken issued a stark warning to Tel Aviv that Israel risked becoming no different from Hamas if it did not curb civilian casualties in Gaza. The senior official also said that the White House welcomed the opening of another border crossing into the territory, but would not be satisfied until more aid reached the Palestinians.

During a press conference in Brussels on Thursday, Blinken pinned blame on Hamas for the severe deprivation in Gaza but said Tel Aviv shared some responsibility and must assist the millions of refugees displaced by its bombing spree.

“What happened after October 7th could have ended immediately if Hamas had stopped hiding behind civilians, released the hostages, and put down its weapons,” the diplomat said. “But Israel is not Hamas. Israel is a democracy; Hamas, a terrorist organization. And democracies place the highest value on human life – every human life.”

He added, “It’s what distinguishes us from terrorists like Hamas. If we lose that reverence for human life, we risk becoming indistinguishable from those we confront.”

Blinken’s statement came amid Israel’s brutal six-month-long onslaught in Gaza, which has earned Tel Aviv much negative press in recent days given the scale of destruction and human carnage.

No, It Does Not Make You a Racist to Reject Eating Bugs or Living in Pods

The corporate media propagandists are working overtime to convince the public there’s no reason to fear eating bugs or living in tiny pods.

In early March, NPR released a propaganda piece attempting to draw a line between racism and people who are questioning the agenda to encourage the public to eat bugs and to live in smaller spaces.

The opposition to these proposals sometimes comes packaged in memes stating “I will not eat ze bugs” or “I will not live in ze pod”, complete with faux German accent meant to mock World Economic Forum founder Klaus Schwab. The WEF and Schwab are largely responsible for helping propel the idea that bugs are the preferred protein source in the fight against climate change.

Independent journalist James Corbett does a great job debunking NPR’s claims that only crazy people believe there is an effort to promote eating bugs. He highlights numerous examples of the mainstream implanting the idea that bug protein is humanity’s future. Even actress Nicole Kidman was a good propagandist and allegedly ate bugs for Vanity Fair. While the NPR podcast does everything it can to avoid actually investigating if groups like the WEF are involved in promoting the bug agenda, the WEF YouTube channel and website are rife with examples.

The podcast also spends a few moments poking fun at those who are concerned by articles and videos professing the benefits of living in smaller spaces, sometimes referred to as “pods”. The NPR hosts are quick to let you know that only white nationalists and those suffering from “white guilt” are worried about pods. However, many critics of this effort believe the focus on smaller living spaces is part of the same agenda that told the public “You Will Own Nothing and Be Happy”, a phrase first heard from the fine folks over at the World Economic Forum.

This phrase was also part of the WEF’s Great Reset agenda, announced in June 2020 with a book from Klaus Schwab, and flashy marketing videos promoting the concept. The Great Reset was described by the WEF as a transformation of the economic, governmental, healthcare, food production, and technological systems which underpin all of human life. The WEF said COVID-19 presented the opportunity to radically change the world and The Great Reset agenda was their effort to do just that.

Israel Ignored Deal to ‘Free All Civilians’ From Gaza Soon After 7 Oct: Qatar

Israeli officials have made their distrust of Qatari mediation efforts heard, calling Doha a 'wolf in sheep's clothing'

Qatari officials told The Jerusalem Post on 4 April about the “complex position” that the nation has been put in as it plays the key mediator in the Israeli war on Gaza.

The Post’s Zvika Klein spoke with officials about the nation’s roles, in one instance, prodding an official about Doha’s hosting of Hamas officials and financing of Gaza’s resistance forces.

One bureaucrat responded that the hosting of Hamas leaders in Doha was an attempt to create dialogue rather than an overt support of its politics, a decision also taken at the request of Washington.

“The Israeli and US governments are those who have asked us to prevent a humanitarian crisis and financially support Gazan citizens, as well as employees of the Palestinian Authority, to maintain a sense of stability in the region,” the Qatari official said, adding that Americans and Israelis “were also the ones who asked us to let Hamas leaders stay in Doha, as they would rather have them in Doha than in Tehran or Beirut.”

Qatar is the historic mediator of conflicts between Palestinian resistance forces and Israel.

In this round of war negotiations, Doha officials said that Israel impeded efforts toward the release of the captives in Gaza.

“We approached Israel very soon after 7 October since we were able to agree with Hamas about the release of all civilian hostages,” a senior source close to the Qatari government said.

The source added that Israel took too long to respond.

“We were only answered by Israel on 16 October,” he said, adding that Israel was adamant about conducting a siege on Gaza in an attempt to release the captives on its own and establish deterrence.

According to a Hamas source, Qatar reached out to Israel on 8 October to attempt to mediate a prisoner swap deal between the Palestinian resistance and Israel...

In March, Hamas’ military wing, the Qassam Brigades, estimated that the number of captives killed as a result of Israel’s attacks on the Gaza Strip “may have exceeded” 70.

‘196 Humanitarian Workers Killed in Gaza So Far and We Want To Know Why’: United Nations to Israel

U.N. Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said on Friday that he sincerely hopes Israel quickly and effectively boosts aid access to the Gaza Strip, describing the situation in the Palestinian enclave after six months of war as "absolutely desperate."

The U.N. says at least 196 humanitarian workers have now been killed in the six-month-long war as Israel retaliates against Hamas in Gaza over a deadly Oct. 7 attack on Israel by the Palestinian militant group. "The Israeli government has acknowledged mistakes," Guterres said. "But the essential problem is not who made the mistakes, it is the military strategy and procedures in place that allow for those mistakes to multiply time and time again."

Israeli Army Admits Chopper Attack Killed 7 Oct Captive

Israeli attack helicopters, drones, and tanks killed many of the 1,200 Israeli civilians and soldiers who died during Hamas' Operation Al-Aqsa Flood.

The Israeli army released a statement on 5 April where it admitted that Efrat Katz, 68, was likely killed by Israeli helicopter fire that targeted a vehicle with Hamas fighters taking her captive to Gaza on 7 October.

"It appears that during the battles and the airstrikes, one of the combat helicopters that took part in the fighting, fired at a vehicle that had terrorists in it, and which, in retrospect, based on the testimonies, also had hostages in it," read the statement.

"As a result of the fire, most of the terrorists manning the vehicle were killed, and most likely, Efrat Katz was killed as well." Her body is said to remain in Gaza.

The army claimed that according to its investigation, the Israeli captives present in the vehicle "could not be distinguished by the existing surveillance systems." The commander of the Air Force "did not find fault in the operation by the helicopter crew, who operated in compliance with the orders in a complex reality of war," the statement added.

Israel's Channel 12 reported in December that Katz had been killed by Israeli helicopter fire, citing the testimony of Katz' grown daughter, Doron Katz-Asher. Doron explained that she and her two young daughters were injured in the same helicopter strike.

While the army claims Katz's killing was an accident, Israeli media has elsewhere reported that the military leadership issued the Hannibal Directive on 7 October. The controversial directive orders Israeli forces to deliberately kill their own soldiers or civilians if they are being taken captive by an enemy.

This indicates that the army's killing of Katz and its killing of many other Israelis who died on 7 October may have been deliberate. Hamas wished to take Israeli captives to exchange for the thousands of Palestinians held captive in Israeli prisons.

Through CC35’s Alcades por el Clima (Mayors for the Climate) initiative, over 15,000 local governments in Latin America have signed agreements with CC35 related to carbon emission trading schemes and limits, led by Brazil (5,564 local governments), Argentina (2,457 local governments), and Mexico (2,481 local governments). Presumably, those carbon neutrality/trading agreements will allow CC35 to push those municipalities into the GREEN+ program, if they aren’t already planning to participate directly (many are).

In other words, the vast majority of Latin America, unbeknownst to the vast majority of its populace, is already contractually yoked to one of the main organizations behind the GREEN+ program – run by interests tied to foreign banks, corporations and even intelligence services. "

In the 12th episode of The Pyramid of Power series, journalist Derrick Broze examines the history of the international intelligence community, specifically the British, American, Russian, Israeli, and Chinese intelligence agencies.

This clip focuses on Carbyne 911, a plugin for emergency call centers and an app for consumers which works by giving a 911 dispatcher access to the caller's camera and GPS to provide a live feed.

Carbyne's executive team is filled with former members of Israeli intelligence, including Unit 8200. Michael Chertoff, who ran Homeland Security under US President George Bush, serves on Carbyne's advisory board. Chertov wrote the Patriot Act, which authorized digital surveillance of Americans.

Whatcom County City Debates Removing Fluoride From Its Water

The issue surfaced after some Lynden residents and officials questioned the safety of the mineral additive, which is used to help prevent tooth decay.

For nearly 80 years, cities and towns across the United States have added fluoride to their public water systems, with the intent of helping prevent tooth decay.

The intended result for dental health was overwhelmingly positive, and is considered by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to be one of the greatest public health success stories of the 20th century. By 1992, 144 million Americans were receiving fluoridated water. By 2020, that number had climbed to over 208 million people, or roughly 75% of the country’s population.

In Whatcom County, however, only one municipality currently fluoridates its water: Lynden. Anacortes is the only other public system with fluoridation in Whatcom, Skagit and San Juan counties. Per the Department of Health, 46% of Washington residents receive fluoride-treated drinking water.

Although Lynden has treated its water with fluoride for over 60 years, it is now seriously weighing the removal of fluoride from city taps after a group of citizens expressed worry over the mineral’s safety. Those concerns have spread to social media, where a private Facebook group, Lynden Against Its Toxic City Water, has 421 members as of publication.
