US, Israel Divided Over ‘Unrealistic’ Rafah Plans

Tel Aviv has rejected Washington's assertion that an evacuation of Rafah could take several months

Significant differences emerged between Washington and Tel Aviv during a recent virtual meeting on Israel’s planned attack on Gaza’s southernmost city of Rafah, according to US and Israeli officials.

US representatives, led by National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan, expressed concerns over “unrealistic” Israeli plans to evacuate over one million besieged Palestinians in the city, three sources with knowledge of the meeting told Axios on 3 April, adding that “deep divides” were evident.

The virtual meeting was held on Monday, 1 April.

Israeli officials in the meeting presented “general ideas” for evacuating Rafah’s stranded population, with the US saying “it is an unrealistic estimate and told the Israelis they are underestimating the difficulty of the task,” the sources told Axios.

Washington’s representatives told Israeli officials that the humanitarian catastrophe that has unfolded in Gaza has negatively affected confidence in Israel’s ability to properly evacuate Rafah. Two of the sources said the US believes an evacuation could take up to four months, something that was rejected by Israel during the meeting.

Israeli officials reportedly disagreed that Gaza is facing severe famine, responding to Washington’s warnings on the unmatched food security crisis in the strip – a result of Tel Aviv’s continued blocking of sufficient amounts of aid from entering the enclave.

"It is clear to everybody that we will have to find a middle ground here," one source said.

Regarding military operations, Washington stressed an alternative approach to a full-scale invasion of the city, according to the sources. The alternative includes “isolating Rafah from the rest of the Gaza Strip, securing the Egypt–Gaza border, focusing on targeting senior Hamas commanders in the city and conducting intelligence-based raids.”

The virtual meeting on Rafah came after Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu canceled an initial meeting in response to a US abstention on the UN Security Council’s 25 March resolution calling for a ceasefire in Gaza.

Irish Government Wants Pre-Election Pact With Tech Giants To Counter Online “Disinformation”

Many governments around the world are no longer at least pretending they don’t see Big Tech as a major political asset, or that they will not try to use that asset to their advantage. Instead, this behavior is slowly being normalized – albeit always qualified as a democracy-preserving, rather than undermining policy.

In other words, something driven by the need to combat “disinformation” and not what critics suspect it is – the need to harness and control the massive reach, influence, and power of major social platforms.

Judging by reports out of Ireland, it is among those countries, with big words like “supercharged disinformation threats to democracy” flying around as the government looks to use what some might call “supercharged fearmongering” to secure no less than a “pre-election pact with tech giants.”

Some of this is yet to be enacted through the Electoral Reform Act, so in the meanwhile Big Tech representatives have been summoned to a meeting, via lobbyists representing them, Technology Ireland, to discuss the said “threats.”

The Electoral Reform Act is supposed to formalize new rules for both platforms and those buying ads, while during the meeting, set to take place in late April, tech companies will be expected to sign “the Irish Election Integrity Accord.”

A letter signed by Minister for Housing Darragh O’Brien and Minister of State Malcolm Noonan explained that the Accord will be new, but based on the Electoral Reform Act from 2022, and always focusing on “disinformation,” and advertising. What the giants are expected to sign up to is “a set of principles for the sector and the state to work by to safeguard our democracy over these crucial next few months.”

Dave Smith: As the Israeli assault on Gaza becomes even more transparently indefensible, I’d like to take on the three main “justifications” that I get the most.

1) They have to finish the job! Hamas must be defeated!

The obvious moral hypocrisy of believing that you are justified in killing babies to maybe kill some terrorists aside, this argument demonstrates a complete lack of understanding about what creates terrorism.

Pat Buchanan said that terrorism is the price of empire. I think it’s the price of domination over other people. Honestly, how hard is it to put yourself in their shoes? If someone killed your baby, would you be ready to go kill someone over it?

What Israel has done to Gaza since October guarantees more Hamas or Hamas like groups.

2) What about the hostages?

It is mind boggling that anyone can look at what Israel is doing and believe that their primary goal is to get the hostages out alive. How many of them has Israel already killed? I don’t think anyone actually knows, but it should be self evident that destroying a city that you claim contains hostages is not motivated by valuing their safety above all.

Continuing the war doesn’t help the hostages. Israel can negotiate for them, as they have in the past. They hold all of the chips and they’ve got plenty of hostages of their own.

3) If Israel doesn’t finish the job there will be more 10/7s

This is laughably stupid. I don’t care what the loudest member of Hamas said they wanted to do, what matters is their ability to do it. Hamas has never pulled off anything like 10/7 before and they’re not likely to ever be able to again. Israel underestimated/supported the threat, they can just not do that again. Israel is a fortress and can easily secure its borders.

There is simply no justification for this war to continue and you should never support anyone who wants to force you to fund it.

World Central Kitchen Founder Says Israel Targeted His Aid Workers ‘Systematically, Car by Car’

Celebrity chef José Andrés previously defended Israel's conduct in Gaza

José Andrés, a celebrity chef and founder of the World Central Kitchen, said Wednesday that Israel killed aid workers for his organization “systematically” and “car by car.”

Seven WCK workers, including an American and three British nationals, were killed by an Israeli drone that targeted three cars with at least three missiles until there were no survivors left. Israeli officials have claimed it was an accident, an assertion backed by the US, but Andrés said he wasn’t buying the story.

The WCK workers also coordinated with the Israeli military and were traveling along a pre-approved route when they were killed. “This was not just a bad luck situation where ‘oops’ we dropped the bomb in the wrong place,” Andrés said, according to Reuters. “Even if we were not in coordination with the (Israeli military), no democratic country and no military can be targeting civilians and humanitarians.”

Andrés, a Spanish-American, said the US should do more to stop Israel’s slaughter of Palestinians in Gaza. “The US must do more to tell Prime Minister Netanyahu this war needs to end now,” he said.

Andrés had previously defended Israel’s conduct in Gaza in response to a Spanish minister calling it a genocide back in October. “You as minister have to first recognize that the Hamas attack against civilians is a terrorist act… and that Israel is defending its citizens… then you can ask for restraint and respect for the lives of civilians in Gaza,” he wrote on X.

The Grayzone recently reported that the US and Israel were working closely with Andrés and the WCK and saw the aid group as a potential replacement for the UN’s Palestinian relief agency, UNRWA. The US stopped funding UNRWA over unsubstantiated claims from Israel that 12 of its employees participated in the October 7 attack.

The Israeli killing of the aid workers has led the WCK and other aid organizations to suspend operations in Gaza, and some aid has been turned back, contributing to the Israeli starvation blockade on the Strip.

Astonishingly, every capital city of Latin America has eagerly signed on... The (hopefully) well-meaning regional governments have unwittingly paved the way for a sweeping surveillance apparatus tied to American intelligence that threatens to erode privacy and civil liberties under the guise of progress and combating the climate crisis.

Upon further observation, GREEN+’s connections reveal a disturbing narrative of financial interests melding with geopolitical ambitions. ... Pegasus Capital is the firm created by Craig Cogut, a key figure in the “junk bond” financial scandal at the now defunct Drexel Burnham Lambert. Drexel’s junk bond department, led by Michael Milken, engaged in blatantly illegal activity and used junk bonds to help fuel the takeovers of major corporations by the era’s infamous “corporate raiders” before the bank’s collapse. Specifically, Cogut was the lawyer who advised the Milken-run and scandal-ridden junk bond department on the legality of transactions, including those that saw Milken become a convicted felon. Following Drexel’s collapse, Cogut teamed up with a group of Drexel alumni led by Leon Black – now best known for his close association with the deceased sex trafficker and “financial adviser” Jeffrey Epstein – to co-found Apollo Advisers (now Apollo Global Management) in 1990. Cogut left Apollo to found Pegasus in 1996 and Pegasus has since became a key player in several UN-supported “green” finance initiatives. Cogut is also financially entangled with Satellogic’s co-founder, Emiliano Kargieman, as will be discussed later.

Cogut subsequently became a board member of Arizona State University’s Global Institute of Sustainability, which was created by Michael Crow (and who served on the board alongside Cogut). Crow is chairman of the board of trustees In-Q-tel, the CIA’s venture capital arm. Cogut also served on the board of ASU’S McCain Institute, named for the late Senator John McCain, which has links to Ashton Kutcher’s CIA-linked charity Thorn. Current board members of the McCain Institute include both Crow and former CIA director David Petraeus on its board, as well as Lynn Forester de Rothschild, who co-created the Council for Inclusive Capital with the Vatican. Cogut was also on the board of the Clinton Health Access Initiative (CHAI), part of the Clinton family philanthropies, and CHAI was largely shaped and influenced by notorious sex trafficker and “financial advisor for billionaires” Jeffrey Epstein, having been the chief reason for former president Bill Clinton’s flights on Epstein’s plane in the early 2000s.

Notably, Cogut is not the only Drexel alum to be involved in “green finance.” The field of “green finance” itself was essentially invented by Richard Sandor, who made millions at Drexel during the 1980s, pioneering “innovative” products like the collateralized mortgage obligation (CMO), which would later contribute to the 2008 financial crisis. Sandor had previously been deemed the “father of financial futures” and is also credited with helping create derivatives. After Drexel’s collapse, Sandor moved on to pioneering carbon emissions trading and carbon markets with the vision of creating “an all-electronic exchange for carbon trading,” a vision that has since taken shape.

Australian PM Rejects Israel’s Excuse for Killing Aid Workers

Tel Aviv justified the attack on WCK staff in Gaza, describing it as what ‘happens in war’

Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said on 4 April that Israel’s excuse over the killing of seven World Central Kitchen (WCK) aid workers in central Gaza was “not good enough.”

“We need to have accountability for how it has occurred, and what is not good enough is the statements that have been made, including that this is just a product of war,” Albanese said during a Sydney press conference.

Albanese added that Israel has “committed to a full and proper investigation. I want that to be transparent and I want those findings to be made public so that we find out how exactly this can occur.”

The Australian PM voiced his anger directly to Netanyahu during a phone call on Wednesday. He told reporters in Canberra that he “conveyed to Prime Minister Netanyahu in very clear terms that Australians were outraged by this death, by this tragedy, of this fine Australian.”

The statements in question that Albanese may have been referring to were those of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who said in a video statement on 2 April that the attack was what “happens in war.”

Australian Foreign Affairs Minister Penny Wong responded more harshly to the premier, saying, “I would say to Mr Netanyahu that wartime does not obviate responsibility for observing international humanitarian law, including the protection of aid workers.”

Israel carried out multiple airstrikes in Gaza on 1 April against the nonprofit’s vehicles – which were marked with the WCK logo – killing seven aid workers, including Australian national Zomi Frankcom.

WCK founder and celebrity chef Jose Andres said that Israelis targeted his workers “systematically, car by car.” Andres noted that the charity was in communication with the Israeli army, which was aware of WCK’s movements.
