Google Is Ordered To Identify Who Watched Certain YouTube Videos
US federal law enforcement and courts have gone a step further in the extreme efforts they are making to surveil people’s activities online, including on Google’s vast platforms.
The latest is that the tech giant gets orders to identify all people who happen to be watching certain videos or livestreams on YouTube.
After directly censoring creators and channels, giving geolocation data of its users to the authorities in response to the controversial geofencing warrants, this is a new example of how Google can be used and abused in dragnet-style “investigations.”
Unmasking everyone who watched a particular video is similar to geofencing in that it makes everyone a suspect – and this, a number of experts and rights groups believe, is unconstitutional, i.e., in violation of the 4th Amendment, that protects from unreasonable searches.
Forbes writes that it has had access to several orders that name certain YouTube videos, citing one unsealed case originating in Kentucky and having to do with people viewing content posted by a user who law enforcement suspects of money laundering for selling bitcoin for cash.
Undercover agents had contacted the user, sending links to drone mapping and AR tutorials, to next turn to Google, asking to be told who watched the videos.
The videos had more than 30,000 views, and a court ordered that any user who did, between January 1 and 8, 2003, must be thoroughly unmasked.
The order wanted names, addresses, phone numbers, and account activity of each Google user, and IP addresses of everyone who watched the videos without an account.
“It’s fair to expect that law enforcement won’t have access to that (sensitive personal) information without probable cause,” commented Electronic Privacy Information Center’s John Davisson. “This order turns that assumption on its head.”
When the police asked for the order to be issued, they stated, “There is reason to believe that these records would be relevant and material to an ongoing criminal investigation.”
Although Google complied with the demand to keep silent about all this until the records were unsealed last week, according to Forbes, they “do not show whether or not Google provided data in the case.”

IDF Officer: ‘We Demolishing Everything Before Entering’
A senior Israel Defense Forces (IDF) officer said that Tel Aviv is engaged in an overly wasteful war in Gaza. The soldier went on to estimate that Israelis could have achieved similar results against Hamas with only ten percent of the destruction inflicted upon the Strip.
Speaking with Haaretz, the IDF officer said the operations were wasteful, and the same objectives could have been accomplished with far less destruction. “Our form of combat at the moment is unusually wasteful. You could term it ’a war of cruel rich people.’ We’re attacking innumerable targets, without asking whether it’s worth attacking them, and artillery is being used in places where it’s not really obligatory,” he said.
“The fact that we are demolishing everything before entering is being manifested in the duration of the operation. If you’d asked before the war how long it would take us to conquer Gaza, the answer would’ve been that we were talking about a situation that could be accomplished in far less than four months.” The officer added, “In principle, it would be possible to arrive at similar achievements with 10 percent of the destruction we have caused.”
While Tel Aviv does not publish official numbers, some sources told Haaretz that over the past six months, Israel has “dropped tens of thousands of bombs on the Strip, along with the hundreds of thousands of shells that have been fired into the enclave.” The IDF officer described “the amount of munitions” used in Gaza as “unprecedented, and to critical eyes this is wasteful, protracted combat.”
At least 32,000 Palestinians, including 13,000 children, have been killed by the brutal onslaught. The heavy bombing of Gaza has destroyed most of the infrastructure in the Strip. The Guardian reports the widespread bombing campaign could amount to a form of ethnic cleansing called “domicide.”
The Israeli outlet +972 Magazine has also reported on the IDF’s widespread bombing campaign in Gaza. The IDF is using an AI program dubbed “The Gospel” to generate hundreds of targets per day. In an effort to cripple Palestinian society, the IDF is additionally targeting infrastructure such as banks and universities
The officer claimed the IDF employed this tactic to reduce troop casualties but questioned the policy’s effectiveness. “Our assumption is that if we had sown less destruction, we would have sustained more casualties,” he said. “On the other hand, however, less destruction would have meant that we would be on the ground there for less time – and less time means fewer casualties.” The officer added, “We… prefer to apply force powerfully and cruelly over taking risks.”
As Israel is committed to relying heavily on munitions to fight in Gaza, Tel Aviv’s arms stockpiles are running short. Tel Aviv mainly relies on Washington for arms. However, Israel has been forced to seek other sources and fire thousands of munitions with high dud rates. Duds present a problem for Israel as an investigation by The New York Times found most of Hamas’s explosives are made from Israeli bombs which failed to denotate.
Israel’s extensive use of munitions to fight should give the White House increased leverage over Tel Aviv. President Biden, however, has refused to condition any US military aid to Israel. Last week, Congress authorized sending the annual $3.8 billion in military assistance to Tel Aviv as part of a $1.2 trillion spending bill.

Israel’s Attempt to Destroy UNRWA is Part of Its Starvation Strategy in Gaza
This attack could not come at a worse time for Palestinians. Hunger is widespread in Gaza, and famine is projected in the north by May
Israel’s vendetta against the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (Unrwa) illustrates the callousness with which Benjamin Netanyahu’s far-right government has fought the war in Gaza. It also reflects an effort to use Hamas’s 7 October attack as an opportunity for demographic re-engineering.
... In January 2024, the Israeli government alleged that 12 members of Unrwa’s staff had taken part in the 7 October attack. Although Israel has been slow to provide evidence, Unrwa immediately dismissed 10 of the 12 (the other two were said to be dead) and vowed to hold accountable anyone implicated in the attack. The UN also launched an investigation. These steps are exactly what a responsible agency should take.
But the Israeli government saw a broader opportunity. It distributed “intelligence reports” that were said to show that 10% of Unrwa’s staff had unspecified “ties” to Islamist militant groups in Gaza. Israel then pressed governments to suspend funding for Unrwa, which many did, including the United States, Unrwa’s largest funder, and Britain. Some of these governments, including those of the EU, Canada and Australia, have now at least partially resumed funding. Britain and others are awaiting a report on the UN’s internal investigation. The budget deal earlier this month that kept the US government funded through the end of September barred any US funding of Unrwa for a year. (US military aid and arms sales continue, even as Israel bombs and starves Palestinian civilians.)
This attack on UNRWA could not come at a worse time for the Palestinian civilians of Gaza. As has been widely reported, hunger is widespread in Gaza, and famine is projected in the north by May if current trends persist.
With UNRWA’s 13,000 employees in Gaza, “No other entity has the capacity to deliver the scale and breadth of assistance that 2.2 million people in Gaza urgently need,” according to UN leaders. Eight of the biggest private humanitarian agencies working in Gaza said: “The plain reality is that Unrwa’s humanitarian role in this crisis is indispensable and cannot remotely be replaced by any other aid organization.”
Destroying Unrwa thus furthers the Netanyahu government’s starvation strategy for Gaza. Since the siege it imposed on 7 October, the Israeli government has been letting in just enough food to avoid widespread deaths but nowhere near enough to alleviate hunger or to dim the prospects of famine.

Spain, a European Union member, has joined – even if only for a short while – China, Iran, Cuba, Pakistan and Thailand in blocking the encrypted messaging app Telegram.
The country’s High Court made the decision and said the ban was temporary, citing alleged copyright infringements happening on the app as the reason. The judge in charge of the case, Santiago Pedraz, first tried to get Telegram to hand over “certain information” regarding the case.
When those behind the app ignored this, the judge issued the temporary ban order that is expected to last several days – while the claims are being investigated. “Lack of cooperation,” is how Pedraz described Telegram’s attitude.
Although the ban was short-lived, it could serve as a dangerous precedent for how European countries treat secure messaging apps, for whatever reason might suit them at a given time.

As calls grow among critics of Israel around the world to limit arms sales to the Jewish state over the ongoing war against Hamas in the Gaza Strip, data released in recent days shows nearly all of Israel’s weapons imports are from companies in the United States and Germany.
According to a 2023 report by the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute, which studies conflicts and arms, 69 percent of Israel’s arms purchases come from US firms, 30% from Germany and 0.9% from Italy.
“At the end of 2023, the USA rapidly delivered thousands of guided bombs and missiles to Israel, but the total volume of Israeli arms imports from the USA in 2023 was almost the same as in 2022. By the end of 2023, pending deliveries of major arms to Israel included 61 combat aircraft from the USA and 4 submarines from Germany,” the SIPRI report read. By guided bombs, it was apparently referring to kits that convert simple bombs into precision weaponry, via systems like the Joint Direct Attack Munition (JDAM), made by American companies. Israel does not manufacture such systems itself.
The SIPRI report stated that US sales of fighter jets to Israel over recent decades have played “a major role in Israel’s military actions against Hamas and Hezbollah.”
All of the Israeli Air Force’s current manned aircraft are American-made, aside from one helicopter built by France’s Airbus Helicopters.

A WIRED investigation uncovered coordinates collected by a controversial data broker that reveal sensitive information about visitors to an island once owned by Epstein, the notorious sex offender.
NEARLY 200 MOBILE devices of people who visited Jeffrey Epstein’s notorious “pedophile island” in the years prior to his death left an invisible trail of data pointing back to their own homes and offices. Maps of these visitations generated by a troubled international data broker with defense industry ties, discovered last week by WIRED, document the numerous trips of wealthy and influential individuals seemingly undeterred by Epstein’s status as a convicted sex offender.
The data amassed by Near Intelligence, a location data broker roiled by allegations of mismanagement and fraud, reveals with high precision the residences of many guests of Little Saint James, a United States Virgin Islands property where Epstein is accused of having groomed, assaulted, and trafficked countless women and girls.
Some girls, prosecutors say, were as young as 14. The former attorney general of the US Virgin Islands alleged that girls as young as 12 were trafficked to Epstein by those within his elite social circle.
The coordinates that Near Intelligence collected and left exposed online pinpoint locations to within a few centimeters of space. Visitors were tracked as they moved from the Ritz-Carlton on neighboring St. Thomas Island, for instance, to a specific dock at the American Yacht Harbor—a marina once co-owned by Epstein that hosts an “impressive array” of pleasure boats and mega-yachts. The data pinpointed their movements as they were transported to Epstein’s dock on Little St. James, revealing the exact routes taken to the island.
The tracking continued after they arrived. From inside Epstein's enigmatic waterfront temple to the pristine beaches, pools, and cabanas scattered across his 71-acres of prime archipelagic real estate, the data compiled by Near captures the movements of scores of people who sojourned at Little St. James as early as July 2016. The recorded surveillance concludes on July 6, 2019—the day of Epstein’s final arrest.

After months of warnings, a recent UN-backed report offered hard statistical evidence that the humanitarian catastrophe in Gaza is turning into a man-made famine.
It has increased the pressure on Israel to fulfil its legal responsibilities to protect Palestinian civilians, and to allow adequate supplies of humanitarian aid to reach the people who need it.
The UN's most senior human rights official, Volker Türk, said in a BBC interview that Israel bore significant blame, and that there was a "plausible" case that Israel was using starvation as a weapon of war in Gaza.
Mr Türk, who is the UN high commissioner for human rights, said that if intent was proven, that would amount to a war crime.
...The US Navy is also sending an engineering flotilla across the Atlantic to build a temporary pier to land aid by sea.
None of that would be necessary if Israel granted full road access to Gaza and expedited the delivery of relief supplies through the modern container port at Ashdod, only about half an hour's drive north of the Gaza Strip.
In an interview from Geneva, Mr Türk said evidence had emerged that Israel was slowing down or withholding the delivery of aid.
Mr Türk condemned the Hamas attacks on Israeli civilians and soldiers on 7 October, including killing, rape and hostage-taking. But he also said that no side in the war should evade accountability for its actions, including for any attempt to withhold aid supplies from the people who need it in Gaza.

Annelle Sheline, who served as a foreign affairs officer in the State Department’s Bureau of Democracy, Human Rights and Labor, has resigned from her post after a year due to President Biden’s unconditional support for the Israeli slaughter of Palestinians in Gaza.
“For the past year, I worked for the office devoted to promoting human rights in the Middle East. I believe strongly in the mission and in the important work of that office,” Sheline wrote in an op-ed for CNN announcing her resignation.
“However, as a representative of a government that is directly enabling what the International Court of Justice has said could plausibly be a genocide in Gaza, such work has become almost impossible. Unable to serve an administration that enables such atrocities, I have decided to resign from my position at the Department of State,” she wrote.

World Court Orders Israel to Take Action to Address Gaza Famine
Judges at the International Court of Justice on Thursday unanimously ordered Israel to take all the necessary and effective action to ensure basic food supplies arrive without delay to the Palestinian population in Gaza.
The ICJ said the Palestinians in Gaza face worsening conditions of life, and famine and starvation are spreading.
"The court observes that Palestinians in Gaza are no longer facing only a risk of famine (...) but that famine is setting in," the judges said in their order.
The new measures were requested by South Africa as part of its ongoing case that accuses Israel of state-led genocide in Gaza.
In January the ICJ, also known as the World Court, ordered Israel to refrain from any acts that could fall under the Genocide Convention and to ensure its troops commit no genocidal acts against Palestinians in Gaza.
In Thursday's order the court reaffirmed the January measures but added Israel must take action to ensure unhindered provision of basic services and humanitarian assistance including food, water and electricity as well as medical supplies and medical care to Palestinians throughout Gaza.

Russia Is Preparing for an All-out War With NATO to Happen Sooner Than Originally Believed: ISW
Russian President Vladimir Putin's focus on reviving the Russian economy isn't just about funding the country's war on Ukraine, the Institute for the Study of War says.
"Several Russian financial, economic, and military indicators suggest that Russia is preparing for a large-scale conventional conflict with NATO, not imminently but likely on a shorter timeline than what some Western analysts have initially posited," the ISW wrote in a report on Wednesday.
The think tank cited a meeting Putin held with the Russian Duma on Tuesday, just days after the Russian leader claimed a landslide victory in his fifth presidential election on Sunday.
...This isn't the first time analysts have said a war between Russia and NATO could be imminent.
Estonia's foreign-intelligence service said in a report last month that Russia was preparing for a "confrontation with the West."
"Russia has chosen a path which is a long-term confrontation," the agency's chief, Kaupo Rosin, told journalists at the report's launch, according to Reuters. "The Kremlin is probably anticipating a possible conflict with NATO within the next decade or so."

Russia’s Foreign Ministry rejected a U.S. claim to a vast territory of seabed under the Arctic Sea, accusing Washington of violating international law. The ministry’s statement, released on March 25, comes three months after the United States made its unusual pronouncement, asserting ownership of around 1 million square kilometers of undersea territory off the coast of Alaska. The move raised eyebrows among legal and polar experts since Washington cited a major UN treaty setting out rules for the world’s oceans for the claim, even though it is not part of the treaty. Russia, meanwhile, is a signatory to the treaty.
