Australia’s Authoritarian “Misinformation” Bill Has Fewer Protections Against Self-Incrimination Than For Murderers or Arsonists
The very foundations of free speech in Australia are under threat, warn legal experts, as the country considers adopting a chilling law that aims to tackle online “misinformation.” The proposed legislation could expose Australians, who are accused of disseminating misinformation on the web, to sometimes graver legal consequences than those suspected of severe criminal offenses, such as arson or even murder, the Daily Telegraph Australia reported.
Protection against self-incrimination is a key principle in Australian law, rooted in English common law traditions. It ensures individuals aren’t compelled to provide evidence or answer questions that might incriminate themselves in criminal proceedings. The Evidence Act and various regulatory statutes in Australia explicitly protect this right. However, there are exceptions, such as some regulatory contexts where individuals can be compelled to provide evidence, though with safeguards like “use immunity” to prevent the evidence from being used against them in criminal proceedings. Australia’s High Court has emphasized the importance of this right, even as debates emerge regarding its balance with community safety concerns, especially in contexts like terrorism and organized crime.
A profound concern among critics is the expansive power the draft bill confers upon government media regulators. They would wield the authority to summon anyone believed to have insights into the spread of “misinformation or disinformation.” Failing to appear when called would lead to hefty fines, escalating beyond $9,390 daily.
This development has stirred significant contention, as the bill seems to undermine the cherished “right to silence” principle, which shields Australians suspected of crimes.

NEW – CDC Data Shows the Infant Mortality Rate Increased for the First Time in 20 Years in 2022, Experts are Baffled
"This is the first we've seen this rate go up in about two decades. More deep dive and drill down will be needed to understand the reasons...There's a bigger story here tied to maternal health...Maternal health and infant health are intertwined. The data from the CDC actually indicates that maternal complications at birth have also gone up...It's still early, though, to say if this is a blip or is this something larger here at play."

US Special Operations Forces are in Israel Helping Locate Hostages
NYT reports the US commandos are not assigned combat roles
American special operations forces are on the ground in Israel helping locate the hostages Hamas brought into Gaza after the October 7 attack on southern Israel, a Pentagon official said on Tuesday.
“We’re actively helping the Israelis to do a number of things,” said Christopher P. Maier, the assistant secretary of defense for special operations, according to The New York Times. He said the main task is to “identify hostages, including American hostages.”
Maeir did not say how many US commandos were in Israel, but US officials told the Times that several dozen had been deployed in addition to a small team that was already in Israel on October 7. Shortly after the Hamas attack, the Pentagon offered Israel special operations support.
The Times report said that the US commandos were not assigned to combat roles, and so far, there’s no indication that US troops are on the ground in Gaza as Israeli forces are pushing further into the enclave. Maier said the special operators were talking through with their Israeli counterparts “what is going to be a very complex fight going forward.”

Wall Street Eyes 'Explosion Of Profits' From Gaza Destruction
A new article in The Guardian details the enthusiasm among the masters of Wall Street for the wars in Gaza (and Ukraine), issuing "buy" orders all around for US weapons manufacturer stocks. Meanwhile, Gaza's largest refugee camp was blown to pieces yesterday. The Biden Administration is now considering sending US troops as "peacekeepers" once the smoke clears. Good idea?

At US Universities, Free Speech Isn’t Free for Pro-Palestine Activists
Students have faced accusations of antisemitism and been targeted for speaking out against Israeli occupation since the latest war began
American universities claim to be places where ideas meet and unconventional views are challenged.
But most pro-Palestine students and faculty staff would likely say otherwise.
Since Palestinian armed groups launched a surprise attack on Israel on 7 October, and Israel responded with its declaration of war, tensions have raged on US university and college campuses - places that have traditionally served as hotbeds for political activism.
At elite universities such as Harvard, Columbia and Yale, amongst others, students say their attempts to speak out against the horrors being unleashed in Gaza are being conflated with antisemitism with devastating effect.
Late last week, the US Senate passed a resolution describing Palestinian student groups at several universities as "antisemitic, repugnant, and morally contemptible," adding that they were "sympathising with genocidal violence against the State of Israel and risking the physical safety of Jewish Americans."
Then, earlier this week, the Biden administration directed the Department of Justice, the Department of Homeland Security, and the Department of Education to partner with campus law enforcement to investigate anti-semitic incidents on campus.
Students from several leading US universities, many of whom spoke to MEE on condition of anonymity, said even the most benign efforts to call for a ceasefire, or lead a teach-in to shed light on Israeli occupation, were being met with vicious attempts to criminalise them, embarrass their families or destroy their career plans.
They said that discussions surrounding Israel's 75-year occupation of the Palestinian territories were muzzled for years, long before the latest round of hostilities began, but the level of intimidation had now become stark, with a growing obfuscation of Israeli crimes at an institutional level.

Lately, there have been questions coming in asking why Derrick and colleagues do not support or recommend donating Acapulco hurricane relief funds to Jeff Berwick.
For those who missed this video from Derrick in February 2019, it's worth revisiting to understand Derrick's concerns with giving money to Berwick.
We hear Berwick is a part of an effort that is indeed helping people on the ground. While we support and respect those efforts we cannot in good conscience recommend anyone donate to his crowdfunding.

Report: Netanyahu Lobbied EU to Pressure Egypt to Accept Refugees from Gaza
Key European countries dismissed Netanyahu's idea as unrealistic
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu lobbied European leaders to pressure Egypt into allowing Palestinian refugees into its territory from Gaza, Financial Times reported on Monday.
The report, which cited people familiar with the talks, said the discussions happened last week. But key European countries, including Britain, France, and Germany, dismissed the idea as unrealistic due to Egypt’s stated opposition to absorbing Palestinian refugees.
Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi said recently that he opposed “any attempt to liquidate the Palestinian issue by military means or through the forced displacement of Palestinians from their land, which would come at the expense of the countries of the region.”
The Financial Times report came after a document prepared by Israel’s Intelligence Ministry proposing pushing all of Gaza’s approximately 2.3 million residents into Egypt’s Sinai Peninsula was leaked and published by Hebrew-language media. The document outlined a plan to create a “sterile” buffer zone in Sinai to keep Palestinians away from the border.
In light of the leak, Cairo reiterated its opposition to the idea. “We, the Egyptians, are ready to sacrifice millions of lives so that nobody approaches a grain of sand [in North Sinai],” Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly said Tuesday, according to The New Arab.

Robert F. Kennedy Jr Discusses Flying on Jeffrey Epstein's 'Lolita Express'
Robert F. Kennedy Jr. has clarified the nature of his relationship with Jeffrey Epstein, after it was revealed that the presidential hopeful had flown on the convicted sex offender's private jet.
The independent 2024 presidential candidate was among a number of high-profile people who in 2021 were named as passengers on Epstein's jet, which was often used to transport guests to the financier's private Caribbean island, Little Saint James.
Epstein's luxury Boeing 727 was derisively referred to as the "Lolita Express" by a number of media outlets following allegations that it was used to fly underage girls to some of the multi-millionaire's properties.
Following Epstein's death in jail in 2019, which was ruled a suicide, lists have been shared on social media purporting to show the public figures who had visited the island, which is located east of Puerto Rico in the U.S. Virgin Islands.
....Amid mounting curiosity over Kennedy being listed as one of the passengers, a spokesperson for the former Democrat exclusively told Newsweek that he had "flown one time on Jeffrey Epstein's private plane. It was in 1993 from [New York City] to Palm Beach [Florida] to visit RFK Jr.'s mom for Easter."
The spokesperson added that the private jet trip was made possible by Kennedy's then-wife, Mary Richardson Kennedy, who was friendly with Epstein's partner at the time, Ghislaine Maxwell. Richardson Kennedy passed away in 2012. Kennedy has been married to Curb Your Enthusiasm star Cheryl Hines since 2014.
"Mary, Kennedy's wife, and two of their kids were on the flight," the representative said. "Mary knew Epstein's girlfriend Ghislaine Maxwell, who learned that they were going to Palm Beach for Easter and offered their family a ride."

Three Major Events in Russia the World Didn’t Notice
With global media attention focussed away from the war in Ukraine, several key events happened that the world didn’t enough notice. One continues to shape the state of global relations, one continues to shape the state of diplomacy toward ending the war, and one continues to shape the state of the battlefield.
The State of International Relations
The wider context of the war in Ukraine is the struggle on the global stage between US led unipolarity and the multipolarity preferred by Russia, China and the global south, or what Russia calls “the global majority.”
Russian foreign minister Sergey Lavrov spoke to his audience at the High-Level International Conference Eurasian Security of the “stage of truly landmark tectonic change” that the international community has entered. Putin has used the same phrase. What the world is witnessing, Lavrov said, is “the rise of a new and fairer multipolar world order.” This rise, this tectonic change, has “met with tenacious resistance from the Western minority,” Lavrov said. “The United States and its satellites are not trying to hide their motives – they are determined to maintain their dominance and monopolise the entitlement to make globally significant decisions.”
But, despite that resistance, the rebalancing of the international order was recently on display at the fifteenth annual BRICS summit in South Africa where a multitude of countries lined up at the door to enter the multipolar organization, and six countries – Argentina, Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates – did
...Though the Belt and Road International Cooperation Summit Forum held in Beijing on October 17 attracted little media attention, it showed, once again, both the strengthening Russia-China relationship and the rise of the multipolar world.
The State of Diplomacy in Ending the War in Ukraine
... In an October 20 interview, former German chancellor Gerhard Schröder, who, at the request of Ukraine, played a central role in the Istanbul talks, added his testimony that, in the end, “the Ukrainians did not agree to peace because they were not allowed to. They first had to ask the Americans about everything they discussed.”
The world did not take note of Schröder’s revelation or of its significance: that Ukraine and Russia agreed to peace and the US said no. Nor did the world take note that Russia did. In his speech to High-Level International Conference Eurasian Security, Lavrov made clear that Moscow had noted the significance of Schröder’s statement.
... The State of the Battlefield
Ukraine’s counteroffensive has failed. Little land has been won at the enormous cost of life and limb. But the significance of the failure is not just the disappointment of Ukraine’s goals. It is the setup for the reverse. Russia’s decimation of Ukraine’s soldiers and weapons has created the vulnerability and opportunity for a Russian counteroffensive.
That opportunity now seems to be taking place on several fronts. No longer concentrating on imposing heavy losses of life and weaponry from a defensive position, Russia is slowly advancing on several fronts and in several locations. Most importantly around the town of Avdiivka, three miles north of Donetsk City.
Ukraine has been holding on to Avdiivka since 2014. It has become one of the most heavily fortified towns in Ukraine. In recent weeks, Russia has launched a massive assault on the fortified city. Ukraine has reportedly reluctantly acknowledged that Russia has now captured important strategic positions, including, especially, an elevated piece of land called the Slag Heap and a railway line. The Slag Heap is critical because its elevated position gives Russia artillery control over the area, including over Ukraine’s main supply root.

Blinken Says US Needs to Fund Wars in Ukraine, Gaza Because of China
The administration is still pushing for the massive $105 billion spending package it has requested
iden administration officials are arguing that the US needs to fund the wars in Ukraine and Gaza to send a message to China in their pitch for Congress to authorize a massive $105 billion spending package that includes military aid for Israel, Ukraine, and Taiwan.
“What happens in Ukraine, what happens in the Middle East, also matters for the Indo-Pacific. Beyond Europe, we know that our allies, as well as our adversaries, as well as our competitors, are watching that conflict. They’re watching our response,” Secretary of State Antony Blinken said at a Senate Appropriations Committee hearing on Tuesday, according to The South China Morning Post.
“So the funding request … is vital to secure a free and open Indo-Pacific in the face of mounting challenges in that region,” Blinken added. The hearing came after Republicans in both the House and the Senate introduced bills to separate military aid for Israel from other issues.
Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin made the same argument at the hearing. “China would like to see the United States be unsuccessful,” Austin said. “They would like to see Russia continue to challenge us and keep us focused on that area so that we have less time, energy, and resources” to focus on the Asia Pacific."

🚨BREAKING: Biden Tells a Heckler Calling For Cease-Fire: ‘I Think We Need a Pause’
Biden was speaking to an audience of 200 people at a fundraiser when one person in the audience shouted out, “As a rabbi, I need you to call for a cease-fire right now.”
“I think we need a pause. A pause means give time to get the prisoners out,” Biden responded.
“I’m the guy that convinced Bibi to call for a cease-fire to let the prisoners out. I’m the guy that talked to Sisi to convince him to open the door,” he added, referring to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi.
He was referencing the news earlier Wednesday that American citizens are among those who began to leave Gaza through the Rafah border crossing with Egypt.

UN: Israeli Attacks on Gaza Camp Could Amount to War Crimes
The United Nations human rights office said on Wednesday it was concerned that Israeli air strikes on Gaza's Jabalia refugee camp could amount to war crimes.
"Given the high number of civilian casualties & the scale of destruction following Israeli airstrikes on Jabalia refugee camp, we have serious concerns that these are disproportionate attacks that could amount to war crimes," the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights wrote on X.

Boeing Says ‘Cyber Incident’ Hit Parts Business After Ransom Threat
Boeing (BA.N), one of the world's largest defense and space contractors, said on Wednesday it is investigating a cyber incident that impacted elements of its parts and distribution business and cooperating with a law enforcement probe into it.
Boeing acknowledged the incident days after the Lockbit cybercrime gang said on Friday it had stolen "a tremendous amount" of sensitive data from the U.S. planemaker that it would dump online if Boeing didn't pay ransom by Nov. 2.
The Lockbit threat was no longer on the gang's website as of Wednesday, and it didn't immediately respond to a request for comment.
Boeing declined to comment on whether Lockbit was behind the cyber incident it disclosed.
"This issue does not affect flight safety," a Boeing spokesperson said. "We are actively investigating the incident and coordinating with law enforcement and regulatory authorities. We are notifying our customers and suppliers."
Lockbit was the most active global ransomware group last year based on the number of victims, and it has hit 1,700 U.S. organisations since 2020, according to the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA).
The hacking group typically deploys ransomware on a victim organization's system to lock it up, as well as stealing sensitive data for extortion.

Countries Begin Downgrading Ties with Israel Over Relentless Bombing of Gaza
A trio of South American countries, along with Jordan, have downgraded ties with Israel over the onslaught in Gaza. According to Palestinian sources, the Israeli military operations in Gaza have killed nearly 9,000 people, half of which are women and children.
On Tuesday, Bolivia took the most extreme step and cut all ties with Israel. Deputy Foreign Minister Freddy Mamani explained that Bolivia “decided to break diplomatic relations with the Israeli state in repudiation and condemnation of the aggressive and disproportionate Israeli military offensive taking place in the Gaza Strip.”
The next day, Tel Aviv responded by saying Sucre’s move was “capitulation to terrorism and to the ayatollah regime in Iran.”
Colombia and Chile announced they would recall their ambassadors to Israel. Colombian President Gustavo Petro posted on X, “I have decided to call our ambassador in Israel for consultation. If Israel does not stop the massacre of the Palestinian people we cannot be there.”

Biden’s Conspiracy Theory About Gaza Casualty Numbers Unravels Upon Inspection
One Palestinian American lost more than 40 relatives in Gaza. We found them on the Ministry of Health list.
President Joe Biden asked last week what his government planned to do to reduce the number of civilian casualties in Gaza, responded by rejecting the idea that the numbers could be trusted. “I have no notion if Palestinians are telling the truth about how many people are killed,” Biden said on Wednesday. “I’m sure innocents have been killed and it is the price of waging war,” he added. “But I have no confidence in the number that Palestinians are using.”
A new analysis by The Intercept provides evidence refuting that claim.
Biden’s effort to delegitimize the numbers coming out of Gaza as fake news has created an opening for defenders of Israel’s indiscriminate bombing campaign to dismiss the crisis; they note that Hamas governs Gaza and therefore runs the Ministry of Health and is inflating the figures. (Biden later clarified he meant to say he didn’t trust Hamas, not all Palestinians, according to the Wall Street Journal.)
