WAPO: Lindsey Graham, visiting Kyiv, Urges Ukraine to Pass Mobilization Law

US senator Lindsey Graham urged young Ukrainians to continue to risk their lives for the Kiev regime, encouraging legislators there to pass a new mobilization law which would lower the country’s draft age to 25.

“I would hope that those eligible to serve in the Ukrainian military would join. I can’t believe it’s at 27.

You’re in a fight for your life, so you should be serving — not at 25 or 27.

We need more people in the line
,” he said.

He also urged Ukrainians not to base their decisions to join the military on whether the United States continues to support them. “No matter what we do, you should be fighting,” he said. “No matter what we do, you’re fighting for you.”

Netanyahu Doubles Down On Plans To Invade Rafah In Response To US Objection

Israel’s premier claims that invading Gaza’s southernmost city necessary to ‘eliminate’ Hamas

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu told lawmakers on 19 March that deterring Hamas requires a ground incursion by the Israeli army into Rafah, negating international pleas against it.

“We have a disagreement with the Americans about the need to enter Rafah,”
Netanyahu told the Foreign Affairs and Defense Committee. “Not about the need to eliminate Hamas – the need to enter Rafah. We do not see a way to eliminate Hamas militarily without destroying these remaining battalions. We are determined to do it.”

Netanyahu held a phone call with US President Joe Biden on Monday, in which the latter said that a ground invasion into Rafah would be a “mistake.”

During a press briefing on Monday, US National Security Advisor Sullivan said that “a major ground operation there would be a mistake. It would lead to more innocent civilian deaths, worsen the already dire humanitarian crisis, deepen the anarchy in Gaza, and further isolate Israel internationally.”

Addressing Washington's comments, Netanyahu said that he “made it clear to the president in our conversation, in the clearest way, that we are determined to complete the elimination of these battalions in Rafah … There is no way to do it, except by going in on the ground.”

“We need to complete the military elimination of Hamas,”
the Israeli premier said. “There is no substitute for that, you can’t go around it, you can’t say ‘we’ll destroy 80 percent of Hamas, we’ll [leave] 20 percent because that 20 percent will reorganize and retake the Strip..."

Sullivan said that Israel has yet to present the US with a plan for where the 1.5 million civilians sheltering in Rafah would go and how they would be taken care of.

In relation to those displaced, Israeli army spokesman Daniel Hagari previously said, "We need to make sure that 1.4 million people – or at least a significant amount of the 1.4 million people – will move … Where? To humanitarian islands that we will create with the international community.”

Biden Knew Israel Was Bombing Civilian Targets in October

WaPo reported on a briefing in October on Israel bombing buildings without having 'solid intelligence' that they were military targets

Biden administration officials knew back in October that Israel was bombing buildings in Gaza without having “solid intelligence” that they were military targets and continued to provide full support for the Israeli military operations anyway, The Washington Post reported on Monday.

The report said that a briefing took place at the White House on October 27, three weeks into the brutal Israeli military campaign. Due to the sheer destruction in Gaza, it was clear Israel was bombing the Strip indiscriminately, and a report from +972 Magazine published in November revealed Israel was actually intentionally hitting civilian targets.

Israeli intelligence sources told +972 that Israel targeted what it called “power targets,” which include civilian infrastructure, such as high-rise apartment buildings, banks, universities, and other public buildings. The sources said that the Israeli military would also approve strikes that kill large numbers of civilians in an attempt to target only one Hamas member.

Biden officials also acknowledged during the October 27 meeting that Israel had no clear plan on how to defeat Hamas. “We never had a clear sense that the Israelis had a definable and achievable military objective,” a source familiar with the meeting told the Post. “From the very beginning, there’s been a sense of us not knowing how the Israelis were going to do what they said they were going to do.”

The Bank Of Japan Ends Its Negative Interest Rate Policy, Opting For Its First Hike In 17 Years

Japan’s central bank raised its benchmark interest rate Tuesday for the first time in 17 years, ending a longstanding policy of negative rates meant to boost the economy.

The Bank of Japan’s lending rate for overnight borrowing by banks was raised to a range of 0 to 0.1% from minus 0.1% at a policy meeting that confirmed expectations of a shift away from ultra-lax monetary policy.

It was the first rate hike since February 2007. The negative interest rate policy, combined with other measures to inject money into the economy and keep borrowing costs low, “have fulfilled their roles,” Bank of Japan Gov. Kazuo Ueda told reporters.

The bank has an inflation target of 2% that it used as a benchmark for whether Japan had finally escaped deflationary tendencies. But it had remained cautious about “normalizing” monetary policy, or ending negative borrowing rates, even after data showed inflation at about that rate in recent months.

Russian Spy Chief Claims France Planning to Send 2K Soldiers to Ukraine, Says French Military In Ukraine Would Be Priority Target For Russia"

Schill’s statement comes after French President Emmanuel Macron refused in February to rule out deploying ground troops to help Ukraine fight Russia.

Macron's stance toward Russian President Vladimir Putin has been hardening, and the French leader recently described Putin as a threat not just to Ukraine but to the security of all Europeans.

Schill said France could assemble a division of 20,000 troops in a coalition within 30 days and command an army of around 60,000 soldiers by joining other allied nations.

The French army says it has 121,000 soldiers and can call up 24,000 reservists.

Naryshkin claimed 2,000 French troops would be deployed to Ukraine in the “initial stage” of a wider mission.

Al, Arabiya reported: "Russian Spy Chief Says French Military In Ukraine Would Be Priority Target For Russia"

Sergei Naryshkin, chief of Russia’s foreign intelligence service, said on Tuesday that any French military sent to Ukraine to help fight Russia would be a priority target for Russian troops, the TASS news agency reported.

“It (a French contingent) will become a priority and legitimate target for attacks by the Russian Armed Forces. This means that the fate of all Frenchmen who have ever come to the territory of the Russian world with a sword would await it,” Naryshkin said.

US Finalising F-35 Sale To Israel As Tensions Over Gaza War Plan Boil

The US is planning to move ahead with several major arms transfers to Israel.

The sales are notable because they come amid rising tensions between Biden and Netanyahu over the course of the fighting in Gaza ⤵️

Congress was notified of the $2.5bn sale of F-35 Fighter Jets in 2008, but Israel may take possession of them as it readies a Rafah invasion

Part of the package of arms transfers that the US will notify to Congress is a new shipment of precision-guided munitions worth more than $1bn dollars and a $2.5bn sale of F-35 fighter jets, Josh Paul, the former director of congressional and public affairs for the State Department’s bureau of political-military affairs, said.

On Monday, US national security advisor Jake Sullivan said that Biden warned his Israeli counterpart it would be a “mistake” to launch a full-scale ground invasion of Rafah, the southern Gaza city where 1.5 million Palestinians are sheltering.

Israel is set to send a technical team to the US to discuss its invasion plans as early as this week, Sullivan said. But on Tuesday, Netanyahu reaffirmed his intention to launch a “ground incursion” into Rafah.

US Should Immediately Suspend Arms Transfers To Israel: Rights Groups

Oxfam and HRW submit report to Biden administration listing Israeli violations of int'l law, including use of white phosphorus, blocking of US aid

The
US should immediately suspend arms transfers to Israel, Human Rights Watch (HRW) and Oxfam said Tuesday, citing Israel’s violations of international humanitarian law including with US weapons and the blocking of US-funded humanitarian assistance.

The two organizations submitted a report to the US government listing a wide range of Israeli violations of international humanitarian law since Oct. 7 last year, including the use of white phosphorus, strikes on ambulances and hospitals, and the systematic blocking of assistance, they said in a joint statement.

“There are good reasons why US law prohibits arms support for governments that block life-saving aid or violate international law with US weapons,
” Sarah Yager, Washington director at Human Rights Watch, said in a statement.

“Given ongoing hostilities in Gaza, the Israeli government’s assurances to the Biden administration that it is meeting US legal requirements are not credible,
” Yager added.

“The time has long passed for the Biden administration to end lethal arms sales to Israel, and we call on them to do so now and work to end the death and suffering in Gaza,
” said Scott Paul, associate director for peace and security at Oxfam America.

Journalist Abd Sabbah from the North reports on an attack on a warehouse in the northern Gaza Strip. This warehouse, crucial for receiving aid, was targeted by the occupation army with a reconnaissance missile, significantly undermining efforts to support the resilience of the local population. The attack not only destroyed vital supplies but also claimed the lives of two young men. The occupation also targeted Fayek Al Mabhouh, the head of central operations of the Palestinian police, who played a key role in overseeing the aid’s arrival and security. Sabbah highlights the occupation’s relentless attempts to weaken the steadfastness of the people by preventing the delivery of essential aid, exacerbating the dire conditions of hunger and famine faced by residents in the north of the Gaza Strip.

Biden Reassures Netanyahu He’s Not Trying To Undermine Him

Netanyahu reaffirmed his plan to invade Rafah following a call with President Biden on Monday

President Biden reassured Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu that he wasn’t trying to undermine him politically by criticizing the Israeli government, Axios reported on Tuesday.

Biden gave Netanyahu the assurance during a phone call on Monday, which came after Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) said Netanyahu was an “obstacle to peace” and called for new Israeli elections. Biden said Schumer gave a “good speech.”

Sources told Axios that Netanyahu complained about Schumer’s speech and Biden’s approval of it, prompting Biden to say he was not looking to undermine the Israeli leader or intervene in Israel’s domestic politics.

Biden and other Democrats in the US have tried to distance themselves from the Netanyahu government while also supporting Israel’s mass slaughter of Palestinians and the starvation siege on Gaza. But the criticism has not amounted to a policy change as the US continues to provide Israel with unconditional military aid.

Biden and Netanyahu also agreed during the call that Israel will send a delegation to Washington to discuss its plans to invade Rafah, the Gaza city on the Egyptian border that’s packed with 1.5 million Palestinians. US officials have been cautioning against a full-scale invasion, and are suggesting a more limited operation.

According to the White House, Biden expressed to Netanyahu his “deep concerns about the prospect of Israel conducting a major ground operation in Rafah, where more than one million displaced civilians are currently seeking shelter after fleeing fighting in the north. ” But Netanyahu said on Tuesday that he brushed aside Biden’s concerns and reaffirmed that he’s planning to attack the city.

“I made it as clear as possible to the president that we are determined to complete the elimination of these battalions in Rafah, and there is no way to do this without a ground incursion,” Netanyahu told members of the Knesset Foreign Affairs and Defense Committee.

Netanyahu said Israel was under “international pressure” but said Israel was “rejecting in order to achieve the goals of the war.

US intelligence believes Israel cannot achieve Netanyahu’s goal of “eradicating” Hamas.
[And apparently neither does Israel]

🚨BREAKING: Julian Assange, Justice Department Exploring Guilty Plea to End 14-Year Legal Drama - WSJ

The U.S. Justice Department is considering whether to allow Julian Assange to plead guilty to a reduced charge of mishandling classified information, according to people familiar with the matter, opening up the possibility of a deal that could eventually result in his release from a British jail.

Assange, the divisive WikiLeaks founder, is fighting a drawn-out legal battle with the British government to avoid being extradited to the U.S. to face trial for publishing thousands of confidential U.S. military records and diplomatic cables around 2010. A U.K. court is currently considering whether to allow a last-ditch appeal by the 52-year-old. After U.S. prosecutors charged him in 2019, U.K. law-enforcement officials apprehended him, and he has been in a London prison ever since.

Austin Doubles Down on Military Aid for Israel and Ukraine

Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin pledged that the US would continue to ship weapons to Ukraine and Israel. Washington has provided Kiev with over $100 billion in aid over the past two years. Additionally, after October 7, the US began providing a significant number of arms to Tel Aviv as Israeli forces indiscriminately used the bombs to destroy Gaza.

During remarks to the press at the Ukraine Defense Contact Group, Secretary Austin explained that Washington had no plans to abandon support for Ukraine and hoped Congress would pass a $61 billion aid package for Kiev soon.

“Ukraine’s survival is in danger, and America’s security is at risk, and they don’t have a day to waste and we don’t have a day to spare, either
,” he said. “So I leave here today fully determined to keep US security assistance and ammunition flowing, and that’s a matter of survival and sovereignty for Ukraine and it’s a matter of honor and security for America.”

After Russia invaded Ukraine two years ago, Western leaders pushed Ukrainian President Zelensky to forgo a diplomatic settlement to the conflict. President Biden led the charge, pledging the US would support Ukraine for as long as it takes.

Two years into the war, the White House is struggling to make good on that promise. During the presser, Austin acknowledged that Ukrainians were currently losing territory and needed more ammunition. The White House has used multiple questionable budgetary tactics to stretch the funding appropriated to Ukraine by Congress. However, further funding is meeting a brick wall in the lower chamber.

Even if House Speaker Mike Johnson relents and allows the body to pass the foreign aid bill – that also includes $14 billion in military aid for Israel – Western arms depots are stretched thin. Currently, Russia is able to produce three times the amount of artillery shells as the collective West
