PM Ariel Henry has been unable to return to Haiti, as gangs have targeted nation's international airport

Haiti’s government said Thursday that it was extending a state of emergency and nighttime curfew to try and curb violent gang attacks that have paralyzed the capital of Port-au-Prince in a fierce battle for political power.

An initial three-day curfew was announced over the weekend, but gangs have continued to attack police stations and other state institutions at night as Haiti’s National Police struggles to contain the violence with limited staff and resources.

"The people with the guns are essentially the current arbiter of Haitian politics," said Robert Fatton, a Haitian politics expert at the University of Virginia. "The gangs have won the battle so far."

The attacks began a week ago, shortly after embattled Prime Minister Ariel Henry agreed to hold general elections in mid-2025 while attending a meeting of Caribbean leaders in Guyana. He then flew to Kenya to push for the deployment of a U.N.-backed police force from the East African country to help fight gangs in Haiti. But a court in January ruled that the deployment was unconstitutional, and it wasn’t clear if the force would deploy given the worsening violence in Haiti.

Haiti Extends State Of Emergency As Intruders Break Into Key Port Terminal

Intruders broke into a major port terminal in Haiti Thursday as violence in the country escalated after the government extended its state of emergency.

The Haitian government decreed the state of emergency would be extended to April 3 in the country’s West Region and the capital Port-au-Prince. A curfew has been extended to March 10.

It comes as Port-au-Prince’s Caribbean Port Services (CPS) terminal, a major player in Haiti’s food import supply chain, was broken into around 8 a.m., two security sources told CNN. The intruders headed to the terminal’s gated warehouse area that houses many containers, the sources said.

Video of the port on Thursday showed hundreds of people on the streets around the facility and what appeared to be dozens of people breaking into the gated warehouse. CPS did not respond to CNN’s requests for comment.

The source said the unrest at the port continues.

Haiti Health Care Near Collapse, Says UN, As State Of Emergency Extended

Haiti's government on Thursday said it would extend a state of emergency around Port-au-Prince for another month as gang violence that has threatened to bring down the government and led thousands to flee their homes appeared to show no sign of abating.

The U.N. humanitarian affairs agency warned that the country's health system was "nearing collapse," with shortages of staff, equipment, beds, drugs and blood to treat patients with gunshot wounds.

Two dozen trucks carrying vital equipment, medical supplies and food were stuck at the capital's port, according to the U.N.'s World Food Programme (WFP), which said it had suspended its maritime transport service, citing the "insecurity."

Authorities first announced a state of emergency on Sunday after fighting escalated, inmates were broken out of prison by armed gangs, and an estimated tens of thousands were displaced while Prime Minister Ariel Henry was in Kenya, seeking its leadership of an international force intended to fight the gangs.

Henry, who has been in Puerto Rico since Tuesday, spoke with U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken by phone on Thursday, senior State Department official Brian Nichols said in Washington.

In an "intensive" conversation, Blinken spoke with Henry about "the urgent need to accelerate transition to a broader, more inclusive government," said Nichols.

The prime minister has been apparently unable or unwilling to return to Port-au-Prince, where gunfire has broken out around key transport hubs, including the international airport.

Trump on Israel’s Gaza Slaughter: ‘You’ve Got to Finish the Problem’

Former President Trump, the likely GOP candidate for the 2024 presidential election, said he supported Israel’s brutal military operations in Gaza in an interview with “Fox & Friends” on Tuesday.

Trump agreed when a host described him as being “firmly in Israel’s camp.” He was then asked if he was “on board” with the way the Israeli military was carrying out its campaign.

“You’ve got to finish the problem. You had a horrible invasion that took place, that would have never happened if I was president, by the way,” Trump replied.

Trump did not elaborate on his position and only claimed the October 7 Hamas attack wouldn’t have happened if he was still president. When asked whether or not he would support a ceasefire in Gaza, Trump said, “Look, I hate seeing what’s happening. Again, it would have never happened. This attack on Israel and, likewise, Israel’s counter-attack, which is what it is, would never have happened if I was president.”

During his time in office, Trump was extremely pro-Israel and carried out several policies to support Israeli claims to occupied land. His administration recognized the Golan Heights as Israeli territory and declared that illegal Israeli settlements in the West Bank do not violate international law.

Trump’s administration moved the US embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem and unveiled a so-called “peace plan” that would have seen Israel annex large swathes of the West Bank.

Febuary 8th Flashback: IDF Intelligence Officer Resigns Over October 7 Failure

Resignation could spiral into other larger resignations

An IDF intelligence officer, with the mid-level rank of major from the Palestinian analysis branch, has resigned, becoming the first Israeli intelligence officer to resign over the failure to anticipate and warn of Hamas’s October 7 invasion of southern Israel.

The development, reported first by KAN news, and confirmed by The Jerusalem Post, is a major event in and of itself, but also could set the stage for additional much larger resignations.

...Given that these are complex strategic issues that could take several months or more to resolve, some have started to predict that none of the top officials would be resigning earlier than late 2024.

...In addition, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has aggressively tried to blame others for the October 7 failure and to prevent any probes into the failure which might study his role and strategic decisions in handling Hamas since he was reelected prime minister in 2009.Gallant very belatedly took more responsibility than Netanyahu, but questions linger on his future in office.

The resignation of the IDF major is the first sign that the above officials may not be able to delay resigning or addressing the consequences of October 7 as long as they might like.

While the major had responsibility for downplaying the threat of a Hamas invasion, that was part of a much larger trend and strategic framing of Hamas as a non-threat.

Some have even accused Netanyahu of using Hamas as an indirect “asset” with which to weaken the Palestinian Authority, while not fully preparing for the potential risks of such a path.

Also, the major is far from the only IDF officer who dismissed the Hamas invasion threat.

Piecing together the different insider accounts along with leaked information, the Post has reported that Non-Commissioned Unit 8200 Officer “V” is the female hero who foresaw the full scope of Hamas’s plans and warned about it multiple times leading into October 7.

There also seems to be little question that her superior officer, Lt.-Col. “A” in IDF intelligence, will be depicted as one of the prime culprits who failed, and dismissed her warnings as “imaginary.”

That said, the Post understands that this same lieutenant colonel remains in IDF intelligence, that there had been no plans to dismiss him, and that there might even have been plans to continue his movement up the ladder of IDF intelligence roles."

Washington Quietly Flooded Israel With Weapons Used To Ethnically Cleanse Gaza

As the White House publicly feigns concern for the mass murder of Palestinian civilians by Israel, for the past five months, the Pentagon has delivered tens of thousands of bombs used to flatten the Gaza Strip

The US government has secretly made over 100 weapons shipments to Israel since 7 October, fueling the genocide of Palestinians in Gaza by delivering tens of thousands of precision-guided munitions, small-diameter bombs, bunker busters, small arms, and other lethal weapons without notifying Congress.

“The administration has organized more than 100 individual transfers of arms to Israel, but has only officially notified Congress of two shipments made under the major foreign weapons sales process, which are usually submitted to lawmakers for review and then publicly disclosed,” US officials who spoke with the Wall Street Journal (WSJ) revealed.

US President Joe Biden bypassed Congress to approve the two publicly disclosed arms transfers by invoking an emergency authority. However, to hide dozens of other transfers, the White House relied on “less public mechanisms,” which include “drawing from US stockpiles, accelerating previously approved deliveries and sending weapons in smaller batches that fall below a dollar threshold that requires the administration to notify Congress.”

“That’s an extraordinary number of sales over a pretty short amount of time, which really strongly suggests that the Israeli campaign would not be sustainable without this level of US support,” Jeremy Konyndyk, a former senior White House official and current president of Refugees International, told the Washington Post.

“This stuff is non-transparent by design,” Josh Paul, a State Department official who resigned in October in protest of Washington's blind support for Israel's genocide campaign in Gaza, told the WSJ.

Skeptical About Israeli Claims, Washington Asked Turkiye To Foot UNRWA Bill: Report

Despite its deep mistrust of Israeli claims that the UN agency has 'ties to Hamas,' the White House has yet to resume critical funding for the humanitarian body

The US government secretly lobbied Turkiye into increasing its donations to the UN Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA) shortly after the White House cut its funding in response to Israel's smear campaign against the humanitarian organization.

“US Deputy Secretary of State Victoria Nuland told Turkish officials in late January that even though Washington had decided to freeze its funding to UNRWA, Ankara and Gulf nations should fill the gap,” Middle East Eye (MEE) revealed on 4 March, citing Turkish sources familiar with the talks.

On 26 January – the same day the International Court of Justice (ICJ) ordered Israel to take measures to prevent acts of genocide in the Gaza Strip – Tel Aviv accused UNRWA staff members of participating in Operation Al-Aqsa Flood on 7 October, leading the US and 18 other nations to swiftly suspend funding for the organization.

A draft bill in the US Congress is currently trying to ban funding to the agency permanently.

US intel agencies cast doubt on Israel's allegations earlier this month. However, the White House has yet to announce a resumption of just over $345 million in US funding to the agency, which covers humanitarian aid to the 2.3 million people being ethnically cleansed in Gaza, as well as millions of Palestinians in the occupied territories, Lebanon, and Jordan.

US Aid Policy On Gaza 'Absurd' Given Military Support For Israel, UN Expert Says

A U.N. expert on Friday criticised U.S. efforts to boost humanitarian aid to Gaza, such as plans for a temporary port and recent air drops, which he said were "absurd" and "cynical" methods so long as military aid to Israel continues.

Amid warnings of looming famine five months into Israel's campaign against the Palestinian group Hamas in Gaza, the U.S. military has carried out air drops of meals into Gaza and plans a temporary port for aid imports on its Mediterranean coast.

Air drops in particular "will do very little to alleviate hunger malnutrition, and do nothing to slow down famine," Michael Fakhri, U.N. special rapporteur on the right to food, told reporters in Geneva.

He warned of chaos as starving people joust for supplies. As for the port, he said no one had asked for it. He called the port and air drops methods of "last resort".

..."That's more than allyship. That's a marriage ... It's almost incomprehensible," he said of U.S. support to Israel, calling the recent aid measures a "performance to try to meet a domestic audience with (U.S. presidential) elections around the corner".

"That's the only rational coherent interpretation (for these aid announcements) because ...from a humanitarian perspective, from an international perspective, from a human rights perspective, it is absurd in a dark, cynical way," he said.

Fakhri, who has been critical of Israel on social media, on Thursday told the Geneva Human Rights Council that Israel was destroying Gaza's food system as part of a broader "starvation campaign". Israel's envoy called this a lie and it strongly denies restricting aid into Gaza.
