The OPCW has been ordered to pay damages to Dr. Brendan Whelan, a veteran inspector who challenged the manipulation of a chemical weapons probe in Douma, Syria. Whelan now tells his story.
[Note: When veteran inspector Dr. Brendan Whelan challenged the manipulation of a probe into an alleged April 2018 chemical weapons attack in the Syrian city of Douma, the leadership of the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) publicly disparaged and censured him. After a lengthy arbitration case, the OPCW has been ordered to reverse its decision and pay Dr. Whelan moral damages and legal costs. ..My ordeal began in 2019 when an engineering study of two industrial chlorine gas cylinders, purportedly dropped from a helicopter in an alleged chemical weapons attack in Douma, Syria, in April 2018, was leaked from inside the OPCW. The unauthorized release contradicted the findings of the OPCW’s official Douma Report of March 2019, which concluded there were ‘reasonable grounds to believe’ a chemical attack had occurred. The report, according to the US Department of State, vindicated the reprisal missile attacks launched against Syria at the behest of US President Donald Trump before OPCW inspectors could enter Douma to investigate.
In response to the embarrassing leak, the OPCW Director-General instigated a major inquiry. Two OPCW inspectors involved in the Douma probe were in the crosshairs. I was one of them.
I was told by the OPCW that ‘Information ha[d] come to light indicating that [I] may have been involved in the breach,’ and despite having left the Organisation some eight months before the leak, that I was a suspect.

Somaliland Seeking 'Security Partnership' With Israel To Counter Yemen
Yemen's armed forces have threatened to close the strategic Bab al-Mandab waterway if the US and Israel launch attacks on Iran from the Red Sea
A senior official in Somaliland said the breakaway territory in northern Somalia is ready to cooperate with Israel to confront the "threat" from the Yemeni Armed Forces (YAF) to the strategic Bab al-Mandab strait, Israel's Channel 12 reported on 2 May.
The official said that any "disruption of maritime security" would push Somaliland to expand its relations with Israel, including to the level of a security alliance.
The official noted that Somaliland currently cooperates with partners such as the US and UAE, which have a presence in the territory's port of Berbera, and that a similar partnership with Israel is possible.
The UAE operates the Berbera port, using it as a logistics hub to transfer arms and mercenaries to fight for the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), who are accused of committing a genocide of non-Arab tribes in Sudan.
Somaliland declared its independence from Somalia in 1991. It is located on the Horn of Africa on the Sea of Aden, opposite southern Yemen.

The Israeli military has constantly violated the US-backed ceasefire deal that was signed in early October 2025, with daily attacks across Gaza, killing at least 832 Palestinians, according to the latest numbers from Gaza’s Health Ministry .
The reporting from Israeli media suggests Israel is preparing a major escalation, back to the levels of the height of the genocidal war, when dozens or hundreds of Palestinians were being killed every day.
According to the Army Radio report, senior Israeli military officials are pushing for the “resumption of fighting,” saying that the “best time to defeat Hamas is now.”
The report cited Hamas’s refusal to disarm as the reason to restart the full-scale bombing campaign, as Hamas has insisted it will not discuss the issue until the first phase of the ceasefire is actually implemented.

The refusal to boost output despite soaring prices has undermined Washington’s push to shield US consumers from a fuel crisis
US oil majors ExxonMobil and Chevron have pushed back against White House pressure to raise production levels despite an ongoing energy crisis triggered by the US-Israeli war on Iran, the Financial Times (FT) reported on 1 May.
Senior executives from both companies said there would be no shift in strategy despite surging prices and political pressure.
Exxon chief financial officer Neil Hansen stated there had been “no change” to operations in the Permian Basin, adding, “There’s really no need for us to shift up because we’re already up, we’re already in high gear.”

Russia has become Syria’s leading supplier of oil since the collapse of former Syrian president Bashar al-Assad’s government and the rise to power of former Al-Qaeda chief Ahmad al-Sharaa, according to Reuters.
Shipments of Russian oil have risen by 75 percent this year to roughly 60,000 barrels per day (bpd), based on Reuters calculations using official data and vessel tracking from LSEG, MarineTraffic, and Shipnext.
While these volumes account for only a small fraction of Russia’s total global oil exports, they are significant for Syria. With domestic production still well below demand, Russian supplies have made Moscow the country’s leading crude provider.
According to two analysts and three Syrian officials cited by Reuters, the trade is driven by economic necessity in Damascus while also allowing Moscow to maintain influence in Syria.
The energy supplies risk complicating Syrian ties with Washington and the EU, sources were cited as saying.

The map published by Iranian media outlines an “area of control” between two maritime lines, one running from the western tip of Iran’s Qeshm Island to Umm al-Quwain in the UAE, and the other extending from Kuh-e Mobarak in Iran to waters south of Fujairah.

Experts who reviewed the analysis said the damage at the sites suggested that the U.S. military had underestimated Iran’s targeting abilities, not adapted sufficiently to modern drone warfare and left some bases under-protected.
‘The Iranian attacks were precise. There are no random craters indicating misses,’ said Mark Cancian, a senior adviser with the Center for Strategic and International Studies and a retired Marine Corps colonel, who reviewed the Iranian images at our request. The Post previously revealed how Russia provided Iran with intelligence to target U.S. forces.
During the war, Iranian state-affiliated news agencies repeatedly shared their own satellite imagery of damage at U.S. bases.
The Post verified the authenticity of 109 of the those Iranian satellite images by comparing them with lower-resolution imagery from the European Union’s satellite system, Copernicus, as well as high-resolution images from Planet where available. No Iranian imagery was found to have been manipulated.’
