The US military’s top general said on Tuesday that Iran’s recent attacks in the region were “below the threshold” of the US restarting its bombing campaign against the Islamic Republic, as the US continues to downplay the flare-ups in the Strait of Hormuz that occurred a day earlier.
“Since the ceasefire was announced, Iran has fired at commercial vessels nine times and seized two container ships. They’ve attacked US forces more than 10 times. All below the threshold of restarting major combat operations at this point,” Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Gen. Dan Caine told reporters at a press briefing at the Pentagon.
Secretary of War Pete Hegseth also said at the briefing that the ceasefire is “not over” and claimed that the conflict in the Strait of Hormuz is “separate and distinct” from the war that the US and Israel launched against Iran on February 28, likely an effort to obscure the status of the conflict, which was launched without congressional authorization, a violation of the US Constitution.
The incidents on Monday included Iran firing warning shots at US warships, an attack on a South Korean oil tanker, and the US firing on Iranian boats. The US claimed it destroyed six “attack boats” while Iran said the attack actually hit two cargo boats and killed five civilians.
The UAE has also come under drone and missile attacks, including strikes that hit oil facilities in its port of Fujairah. Iranian media and officials hinted that Iran was responsible for the attacks, but the Iranian military claimed on Tuesday that it was not behind the strikes.

Iranian forces fired two missiles at a US Navy frigate attempting to cross the Strait of Hormuz on 4 May, Iran’s Fars News Agency reported.
“The frigate – which had been moving near Jask on Monday, violating maritime security and navigation rules in an attempt to transit the Strait of Hormuz – came under missile attack after ignoring warnings from the naval forces of the Islamic Republic of Iran,” sources told the agency.
“As a result of these strikes, the US vessel was unable to continue its course and was forced to turn back and flee the area,” the sources added.
Fars News Agency went on to say that “No further details regarding the extent of damage or possible casualties have been released yet.”

According to the framework, ships can obtain transit authorization from Iran after contacting the authority and paying tolls.

In Blow to Syria Cover-up, Dissenting OPCW inspector Wins Case at International Tribunal
The OPCW has been ordered to pay damages to Dr. Brendan Whelan, a veteran inspector who challenged the manipulation of a chemical weapons probe in Douma, Syria. Whelan now tells his story.
[Note: When veteran inspector Dr. Brendan Whelan challenged the manipulation of a probe into an alleged April 2018 chemical weapons attack in the Syrian city of Douma, the leadership of the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) publicly disparaged and censured him. After a lengthy arbitration case, the OPCW has been ordered to reverse its decision and pay Dr. Whelan moral damages and legal costs. For the first time, Dr. Whelan tells the story of his years-long, Orwellian ordeal for justice. -Aaron Maté]
..My ordeal began in 2019 when an engineering study of two industrial chlorine gas cylinders, purportedly dropped from a helicopter in an alleged chemical weapons attack in Douma, Syria, in April 2018, was leaked from inside the OPCW. The unauthorized release contradicted the findings of the OPCW’s official Douma Report of March 2019, which concluded there were ‘reasonable grounds to believe’ a chemical attack had occurred. The report, according to the US Department of State, vindicated the reprisal missile attacks launched against Syria at the behest of US President Donald Trump before OPCW inspectors could enter Douma to investigate.
In response to the embarrassing leak, the OPCW Director-General instigated a major inquiry. Two OPCW inspectors involved in the Douma probe were in the crosshairs. I was one of them.
I was told by the OPCW that ‘Information ha[d] come to light indicating that [I] may have been involved in the breach,’ and despite having left the Organisation some eight months before the leak, that I was a suspect.

Right off the bat, the document highlights the fact that the main groups driving the insurgency are Islamic extremists.
It goes on to acknowledge the US's support for these extremists..
- "It is worth noting that while Obama’s warning addressed Assad and “any player on the ground,” nothing was actually done when rebels used sarin gas two times in March and April, on government soldiers in the time between the red-line declaration and Assad’s first alleged sarin attack on Ghouta in August of 2013. Days after the Ghouta sarin attack, two more sarin gas attacks were launched by rebels on government soldiers and civilians.
These four sarin attacks by the rebels on government forces were confirmed by the UN in the December 2013 report.
Why would Assad have used chemical weapons after being explicitly warned by the commander in chief of the most powerful military in the world to not use such weapons? Would the rebels have more to gain if they perpetrated the attack, but blamed Assad for it, as they clearly had sarin gas and the willingness to use it."
