Zelensky Seeks Saudi Support For Peace Deal With Russia
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky landed in Saudi Arabia on 27 February for talks with Crown Prince Mohammed Bin Salman (MbS) regarding a possible peace deal with Russia.
"I had a meaningful and candid conversation with His Royal Highness Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman," Zelensky said via social media. "We discussed the Peace Formula's points and the progress that can be made in implementing them. Saudi Arabia's leadership can assist in finding equitable solutions."
Zelensky's peace plan was laid out in the 2022 G20 Summit in Indonesia. The plan involves reaching agreements regarding nuclear safety, food, and energy security, with the final step being signing a peace accord.
Zelensky has visited several nations seeking to rally global leaders in support of Ukraine's proposed peace deal.
In Riyadh, Zelensky said the two parties spoke about their "efforts and dialogue with partners in preparation for the upcoming Global Peace Summit in Switzerland. We discussed the summit's substance and the steps that can be taken to restore true security to Ukraine, Europe, and the global community of nations."
...MbS has been one of a short list of world leaders to have met with Russian President Vladimir Putin since the beginning of the Ukraine war two years ago.
In 2023, Putin flew to Saudi Arabia and the UAE as part of a snap Gulf tour in which he discussed deepening trade and energy ties and continued cooperation within the OPEC+ bloc of nations.

US Intel Warns Israel Determined To Invade Lebanon In ‘Coming Months’
Washington and Paris have been pushing a de-escalation proposal, which Lebanon views as one-sided and unsatisfactory
Israel is reportedly considering launching a ground operation in southern Lebanon in the spring or early summer if diplomatic efforts to push Hezbollah away from the border fail.
“We are operating in the assumption that an Israeli military operation is in the coming months,” an anonymous US official told CNN on 29 February.
“Not necessarily imminently in the next few weeks but perhaps later this spring. An Israeli military operation is a distinct possibility,” the official said.
“I think what Israel is doing is they are raising this threat in the hope that there will be a negotiated agreement. Some Israeli officials suggest that it is more of an effort at creating a threat that they can utilize. Others speak of it more as a military necessity that’s going to happen.”
Another US official said that there are elements of the Israeli government that support a ground operation in southern Lebanon, but others who do not. The second official added that any such operation could result in an unprecedented escalation.
According to CNN, there is also a possibility that the current Israeli aerial campaign against Lebanon could expand.
This could reach “much further north into populated areas of Lebanon and eventually grow to a ground component as well,” a third source familiar with US intelligence told the outlet.
Israel has escalated its attacks on Lebanon recently. In response, the resistance group has widened its target range and struck deeper into the occupied Israeli north.

Reuters Exclusive: Musk's Neuralink Brain Implant Company Cited By FDA Over Animal Lab Issues
U.S. Food and Drug Administration inspectors found problems with record keeping and quality controls for animal experiments at Elon Musk's Neuralink, less than a month after the startup said it was cleared to test its brain implants in humans, according to an agency report reviewed by Reuters.
The inspectors identified quality control lapses at the company's California animal research facility. A similar inspection at Neuralink's Texas facility did not find problems, according to agency records.
Those visits took place last year from June 12-22, and represent the FDA's sole inspections of Neuralink facilities on record. The inspector reports were shared with Reuters by Redica Systems, opens new tab, a data analytics company that obtains FDA compliance reports through open records requests.
"These issues show a lack of attention to detail," said Jerry L. Chapman, a senior quality expert with Redica Systems.
The laboratory problems identified by FDA inspectors included missing calibration records for instruments such as a pH meter used in one of the studies. For another study, seven instruments including a "vital signs monitor" had no record of having been calibrated. Neuralink conducted experiments on hundreds of animals, including monkeys.
Other issues included quality assurance officials not signing off on the final study report or documenting any deviations from approved protocols or standard operating procedures.
...The FDA has its own requirements for animal research, known as Good Laboratory Practice, to demonstrate that any scientific data being collected in the development of a drug or medical device is reliable, three regulatory experts told Reuters.
Neuralink cited its animal research data in its FDA request to test the implants in humans. Musk, the company's billionaire founder, announced in May that his device was cleared for human trials, and said last month the first patient had received an implant and was recovering well.
Neuralink did not respond to questions about the FDA visit.

Chemicals once commonly found in a range of products, including pizza boxes and microwave popcorn bags, are no longer being used in food packaging in the U.S., the FDA said Wednesday (Feb 28).
Eliminating the grease-proofing substances ends a yearslong campaign by the agency to phase out per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances, or PFAS, toxic chemicals that may be linked to serious health problems, including cancer, birth defects and immune system suppression.
They were once unavoidable in people’s day-to-day lives, being used in everything from fast-food wrappers to pet food bags.
Following extensive research over the last decade that found the chemicals can leach into food and may be associated with serious health problems in humans, food manufacturers gradually began to phase them out. In 2020, the FDA said it received commitments from the remaining food manufacturers to remove PFAS from their products voluntarily over the next few years.

But when election campaigns get in full swing, especially in the US, but also the EU, the way Meta reacts, announcing all sorts of yet new policies and new units to deal with information related to elections, shows that it could have a massive influence on their outcome.
And while it’s repeatedly said that (mostly arbitrarily “defined”) misinformation is the scourge of democracy, there is another, this time, no doubt about it: censorship, sometimes based on such flimsy excuses as basically somebody’s subjective opinion – for example, “potential threats.”

Macron Doubles Down on Remarks About NATO Sending Troops to Ukraine
French President Emmanuel Macron on Thursday (Feb 29) stood behind his comments about NATO not ruling out sending troops to Ukraine despite the uproar it caused and the warning it drew from Russia.
“These are sufficiently serious issues; every one of the words that I say on this issue is weighed, thought through, and measured,” Macron told reporters.
Following a meeting of European leaders on the Ukrainian proxy war on Monday, Macron said, “There’s no consensus today to send in an official, endorsed manner troops on the ground. But in terms of dynamics, nothing can be ruled out.”
His comments appeared to confirm a warning from Slovakia’s Prime Minister Robert Fico, an opponent of NATO support for Ukraine, who said earlier that some NATO members were considering sending troops to Ukraine on a “bilateral basis.”
Macron’s comments caused many NATO members to refute the idea that they’re considering sending combat troops to Ukraine, although it’s an open secret that there are a small number of NATO special operations forces already in the country.

Germany Considers Getting Its Own Nuclear Weapons Despite Rejecting Nuclear Energy
Germany has sworn off nuclear weapons since World War II...more recently, nuclear energy.
Germans are beginning to discuss whether the country will eventually need its own nuclear weapons amid fears of U.S. disengagement with Europe, even as Germany continues to spurn nuclear power.
German officials have begun discussing a nuclear fallback plan with the U.K. and France, thanks in large part to Russia's continued aggression as well as former President Trump's pressure on European allies to meet defense spending thresholds, the Wall Street Journal reported Tuesday.
German Finance Minister Christian Lindner gave voice to concerns in an article published in German media.
....Since the end of World War II, Germany has maintained a pacifist stance, and it has sworn off nuclear weapons and, more recently, nuclear energy.
Germany began shutting down its last three nuclear reactors in April of last year amid its push for "clean" energy. Without the plants, however, Germany is currently relying mostly on coal and natural gas to power its economy.

Biden Walks Back Prediction That a Gaza Ceasefire Will Be Reached by Monday
President Biden on Thursday (Feb 29) walked back a prediction he made earlier this week that a ceasefire in Gaza could be reached by Monday (March 4) as Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu called Hamas’s demands “delusional,” signaling a hostage deal is not close.
“Hope springs eternal,” Biden told reporters when asked if he still thought a ceasefire by Monday was possible. “I was on the telephone with the people in the region. I’m still — probably not by Monday, but I’m hopeful.”
When Biden first predicted a ceasefire by Monday, both Hamas and Israeli officials said he spoke too soon. Hamas officials have said the main gap between the two sides is that they want a permanent ceasefire, while Israel and the US only want to pause the slaughter of Palestinians.

“In October, Science, Innovation and Technology Secretary, Michelle Donelan, hosted a roundtable with the UK leaders of social media companies Google, Meta, X, TikTok, and Snapchat to discuss the spread of antisemitism, violent content, and misinformation following the Hamas attack on Israel,” one report said.
And Bhatti, the “tech nerd,” thinks another such “intervention” could be needed – this time related to the general election.
Bhatti’s by no means an outlier here – this is clearly the current UK government’s policy. Only this week, Home Secretary James Cleverly was in the US, to “convene” with Apple, Google, Meta, and X.

Hundreds Of Lawmakers Worldwide Demand Cutting Arms Sales To Israel
UN experts have recently warned that providing Israel with arms is likely to constitute a violation of international law
Over 200 MPs from 12 states signed a letter urging their governments to impose a ban on weapons sales to Israel.
In the letter, organized by Progressive International and signed on 1 March, the MPs say they refuse to be complicit in “Israel’s grave violation of international law” in Gaza.
The organizers believe that certain governments supplying arms to the Israeli military could be held legally accountable, given the scale of death and destruction in the Gaza Strip. Those who signed the letter are all MPs of states that supply Israel with military aid.
Nine are current or former party leaders, including the former British Labor Party leader Jeremy Corbyn, a staunch supporter of Palestinian rights.
The Australian Green Party leader, Larissa Waters, and other MPs from Canada, France, Belgium, and elsewhere signed the letter. Congresswomen Cori Bush and Rashida Tlaib were the only signatories from the US.
“An arms embargo has moved beyond a moral necessity to become a legal requirement,” the MPs wrote, given the International Court of Justice’s (ICJ) ruling that Israel must ensure its forces do not engage in genocidal acts.
