Sweden Clears Final Hurdle to Join NATO as Hungary Approves Accession
Hungary's parliament approved Sweden's NATO accession on Monday (Feb 26), clearing the last hurdle before the historic step by the Nordic country whose neutrality lasted through two world wars and the simmering conflict of the Cold War.
Hungary's vote ended months of delays to complete Sweden's security policy shift and followed a visit by Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson on Friday (Feb 23) during which the two countries signed an arms deal.
"Today is a historic day," Kristersson said on X. "Sweden stands ready to shoulder its responsibility for Euro-Atlantic security."
Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban's government has faced pressure from NATO allies to fall in line and seal Sweden's accession to the alliance.

Ex-Fox News host said that the Biden administration had illegally spied on his text messages and leaked them to the media in order to prevent him from interviewing Putin three years ago. He also said that he was “pretty certain” that they did the same thing last month, but he decided to go to Moscow anyway."

The US has put Russian-Turkish trade on ice by threatening to impose sanctions on financial firms doing business with Moscow, thereby disrupting or slowing down money transfers for Turkish oil imports and exports, Reuters reported on 19 February.
Citing seven unnamed sources familiar with the matter, Reuters said that US threats made in December did not specifically target the energy sector but have made payments for Russian crude by Turkiye and Russian payments for broader Turkish exports more difficult...
Reuters stated the US hopes to reduce Russia’s trade revenues and hinder its war effort in Ukraine, but without affecting Russian oil flow into the global market to prevent a jump in US gasoline prices.
Turkiye is not alone in facing the problem of US sanctions when wanting to do business with Russia; the UAE, China, and India are also facing complications, according to oil traders.

The Israeli leader made the statement after the White House rolled out a new hostage release proposal
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu explained that if Tel Aviv agrees to a new hostage deal with Hamas, it will only “delay” the Israeli attack on Rafah. International aid organizations have warned that an attack on the city of 1.5 million will be devastating to the civilian population of Gaza.
On Friday, the US, Egypt, and Qatar presented a new hostage deal that would see the release of 40 Israeli captives in exchange for a six-week pause in fighting. The deal was negotiated without the input of Tel Aviv and Hamas. While US and Israeli officials have presented the hostage release proposal as progress, neither Tel Aviv nor Hamas have signed on to it.
...From north to south, Israel’s operations have systematically annihilated the Strip. The operations have killed over 30,000 Palestinians and driven 1.5 million to the southernmost city of Rafah. Aid organizations that operate in Gaza warn an assault on Rafah will be catastrophic as there is no other place for the Palestinian people to flee.
“Rafah is the end of the line. There is nowhere else to flee. Even if displaced people return north, they will find no homes to go back to, and no supply lines to bring in food, water, medicines, or any other essentials,” Avril Benoit, executive director of Doctors Without Borders, said. “The consequences of a full-scale assault on Rafah are truly unimaginable. We cannot stand by and wait for this to unfold.”

Robert Fico, a pro-Russia populist, offered no details of how Western soldiers could be sent to assist Ukraine, and commentators said he was probably just trying to stir up trouble.
He was speaking ahead of a hastily-arranged meeting of European leaders in Paris because of what his advisers say is an escalation in Russian aggression over the past few weeks.
The meeting implies that “a number of Nato and EU member states are considering that they will send their troops to Ukraine on a bilateral basis”, Mr Fico told a televised briefing following a meeting of Slovakia’s security council.
“I cannot say for what purpose and what they should be doing there,” he said, adding that Slovakia, a member of the EU and Nato, would not be sending soldiers to Ukraine.
Mr Fico, who was elected last October, said the move could risk an escalation of the conflict in Ukraine, but could not offer more information.
It was not clear whether he was referring to the prospect of Western troops being deployed to Ukraine while the war is still raging.

The Slovak leader has since performed a U-turn on his central campaign pledge, and private arms exports continue to flow into Kyiv.

Biden Warns Israel "They’re Gonna Lose Support From Around the World" if They Continue Down "Incredibly Conservative" Path
President Joe Biden warned Israel it would “lose support from around the world” if it opted to continue down its “incredibly conservative” path, Monday (Feb 26).
Speaking to Late Night with Seth Meyers host Seth Meyers about the ongoing conflict in Gaza, Biden said:
"There is a path forward, with difficulty. Here’s the path forward. Look, first of all, there are—the hostages being held must be released and if we’ve got at least in principle an agreement, there will be a ceasefire while that takes place. Ramadan’s coming up and there’s been an agreement by the Israelis that they would not engage in activities during Ramadan as well in order to give us time to get all the hostages out. That gives us time to begin to move in directions that a lot of Arab countries are prepared to move in. For example, Saudi Arabia’s ready to recognize Israel. Jordan, Egypt, and six other states have been working with Qatar."
The president continued, “You need not be a Jew to be a Zionist. I’m a Zionist. Where there’s no Israel, there’s not a Jew in the world who’ll be safe. But here’s the deal, they also have to make up– take advantage of an opportunity to have peace and security for Israelis and Palestinians who are being used as pawns by Hamas.”
After telling Meyers “there are too many innocent people that are being killed,” Biden said:
"Look, Israel has had the overwhelming support of the vast majority of nations. If it keeps this up without– with this incredibly conservative government they have, and Ben-Gvir and others—I’ve know every major foreign policy leader in Israel since Golda Meir—they’re gonna lose support from around the world, and that is not in Israel’s interest."

It’s the latest sign of financial problems buffeting the media industry. Digital sites the Messenger, BuzzFeed News and Jezebel have all shut down in the past year, and legacy media outlets like the Los Angeles Times, Washington Post and Wall Street Journal have also seen job cuts.
CNN — BuzzFeed on Wednesday sold Complex to NTWRK, an e-commerce company specializing in collectible items rooted in street culture, in a deal that further shrinks the struggling Jonah Peretti-led digital media empire that was once synonymous with virality and the social media age.
The $108.6 million sale of much of Complex Networks, which BuzzFeed purchased three years ago for $300 million, came as the company announced it would lay off 16% of its staff ahead of a “planned strategic restructuring” next week to “enhance the company’s profitability” and “reduce centralized costs.”

Gen Z Loves Donald Trump More Than Any Other Age Group
Donald Trump has a higher approval rating among young adults than any other age demographic, according to a poll.
A Harvard CAPS–Harris survey of more than 2,000 registered voters showed that 57 percent approved of the job the Republican did as president, with 41 percent saying they disapproved.
When the results are broken down further, they show that almost two-thirds (64%) of voters in Generation Z—or those aged 18 to 24—approved of Trump's job as president. The age range of this demographic means some respondents were children during Trump's time in office, 2017 to 2021.

Donald Trump has a higher approval rating among young adults than any other age demographic, according to a poll.
A Harvard CAPS–Harris survey of more than 2,000 registered voters showed that 57 percent approved of the job the Republican did as president, with 41 percent saying they disapproved.
When the results are broken down further, they show that almost two-thirds (64%) of voters in Generation Z—or those aged 18 to 24—approved of Trump's job as president. The age range of this demographic means some respondents were children during Trump's time in office, 2017 to 2021.
However, the results could be yet another warning sign for President Joe Biden's reelection hopes. ...
