Julian Assange is one of the greatest journalists of all time.
He exposed inconvenient truths to the public and, in turn, threatened the interests of those in power.
For that, he is treated like a criminal, instead of the hero that he is.
In 2010, WikiLeaks published a secret cache of documents titled “Collateral Murder, 5 Apr 2010.” This included a gunsight video from an Apache helicopter showing the killing of civilians in Baghdad. As such, the U.S. government’s misleading statements about the event were exposed, extending to the Pentagon’s claim that the video didn’t even exist.
Assange’s release of Democratic National Committee (DNC) emails disrupted the 2016 presidential race, revealing internal bias against Bernie Sanders in favor of rigging the Democratic primary for Hillary Clinton. Contrary to claims of Russian hacking, the emails were leaked by a disgruntled DNC employee.
Assange’s final major revelation involved an illegal CIA spying program in 2017. Although WikiLeaks withheld certain details to protect American national security, this was a major embarrassment to the CIA.
As such, the establishment wants to get rid of the Julian Assange problem — for good.
Assange, an Australian citizen, faces charges of violating the US Espionage Act and the potential for a staggering 175-year prison sentence if convicted.
He is set to appear before two High Court judges in London on February 20-21, 2024, in what will likely be his final appeal against extradition to the United States.
This “may be the final chance for Julian Assange to prevent his extradition to the United States,” WikiLeaks warned.

Manufacturing Consent: The Border Fiasco and the “Smart Wall”
The political response to the crisis at the southern border continues to advance the bipartisan “smart wall,” having been backed by Trump and Biden alike. This bipartisan consensus reaches far beyond the US, as much of the world is similarly speeding along in implementing “digital borders.”
The disastrous situation at the US-Mexico border is, and has been, intentionally produced. Throughout the last several administrations, regardless of campaign and other public rhetoric, the porous nature of the border has remained unresolved. On several occasions, the situation as it has developed has been blamed largely on incompetence and government inefficiency. Though some administrations have been tougher than others in regards to terrestrial migration (under some metrics), the US-Mexico border has not been sealed off so to force entrants to cross through officially recognized and managed ports of entry.
Under the current administration, it has been pointedly obvious that even the sections of the border that do contain physical barriers are being dismantled on purpose, all the while illegal crossings have risen to unprecedented levels. Whatever the motives for this deliberate policy on the part of the Biden administration, the end result has been the widespread characterization of the crisis as an “invasion,” priming the voter bloc usually most concerned with border security – the American Right – for military-style “solutions.”
While the justifications for the frenzied media coverage are based on the actual reality that the border is indeed highly insecure (and has been for some time), the policy responses from American politicians reveal that there is a bipartisan consensus about what must be done. Tellingly, the same “solution” is also being quietly rolled out at all American ports of entry that are not currently being “overrun”, such as airports. That solution, of course, is biometric surveillance, enabled by AI, facial recognition/biometrics and autonomous devices.
....This “solution” is not just being implemented throughout the United States as an alleged means of thwarting migrants, it is also being rapidly implemented throughout the world in apparent lockstep. The reasons for the unspoken, but obvious, global consistency in implementing invasive, biometric surveillance is due to the fulfillment of global policy agendas, ratified by nearly every country in the world, that seek both to restrict the extent of people’s freedom of movement and to surveil people’s movements (and much, much more) through the global implementation of digital identity. Those policy agendas include mainly the UN’s Agenda 2030 or Sustainable Development Goals, specifically SDG 16, as well as Interpol’s Global Policing Goals.

Did the Leak of Alleged Russia National Security Threat Kill the Bill to Reform Warrantless Surveillance?
The contentious US surveillance program’s reauthorization faced a major setback over the last week. TechCrunch (9/15/23) — X, formerly Twitter, has launched government ID-based account verification for paid users to prevent impersonation and give them benefits such as “prioritized support.”
The social network has partnered with Israel-based Au10tix for identity verification solutions. The pop-up for ID verification indicates that the Au10tix could store this data for up to 30 days.
Al Jazeera (9/21/23) — Many X users were unhappy with the choice of the company to store user data, pointing out its employees’ links to Israeli intelligence. Others expressed their discomfort with giving a company their data when so many data breaches have been reported in the past.
AU10TIX helped to create the identity verification systems for airports and border controls in the 1980s and 90s before expanding, with the growth of the internet, into what it describes as “digital spaces” in 2002. It now boasts several high-profile clients such as Uber, PayPal and Google.
Elon Musk, who acquired Twitter in October 2022, appeared to have completed ID verification on August 1, suggesting that the ID verification system is already operational and could therefore appear publicly soon.

The United States has proposed an alternative draft United Nations Security Council resolution calling for a temporary ceasefire in the Israel-Hamas war and opposing a major Israeli ground offensive in Rafah in southern Gaza, according to the text seen by Reuters on Monday (Feb 19).
Washington has been averse to the word ceasefire in any U.N. action on the Israel-Hamas war, but the U.S. draft text echoes language that President Joe Biden said he used last week in conversations with Israel's Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
The U.S. draft text "determines that under current circumstances a major ground offensive into Rafah would result in further harm to civilians and their further displacement including potentially into neighboring countries."
Israel plans to storm Rafah, where more than 1 million of the 2.3 million Palestinians in Gaza have sought shelter, prompting international concern that such a move would sharply worsen the humanitarian crisis in Gaza.
The draft U.S. resolution says such a move "would have serious implications for regional peace and security, and therefore underscores that such a major ground offensive should not proceed under current circumstances."
It was not immediately clear when or if the draft resolution would be put to a vote in the 15-member council. A resolution needs at least nine votes in favor and no vetoes by the United States, France, Britain, Russia or China to be adopted.

Middle East War Expands with Massive Israeli Airstrikes 60km Deep Into Lebanon
The Israel-Hezbollah war is expanding, which was on display Monday (Feb 19) as Israel for the first time struck near a large city which is deep inside Lebanon, far away from the border, in the region of Ghaziyeh.
Israel Defense Forces (IDF) Spokesman Rear Adm. Daniel Hagari has confirmed in a statement that military was behind large airstrikes that rocked a town just south of Sidon earlier in the day. Hagari the strikes targeted Hezbollah weapons depots, and also served as a response to an explosive-laden that struck northern Israel previously on Monday. Video captured the moment of the massive airstrikes.
Sidon is the third largest city in Lebanon, and the region that was attack lies at least 45-60 kilometers from the Israeli border.

US Drafts Its Own Gaza UN Resolution After Threatening to Veto Ceasefire
The US is circulating its own Gaza-related UN Security Council resolution after threatening to veto one being drafted by Algeria that calls for a humanitarian ceasefire.
The new US version calls for the Security Council to express support for a “temporary ceasefire in Gaza as soon as practical, based on the formula of all hostages being released.”
The resolution essentially reaffirms the US position that it opposes a permanent ceasefire in Gaza and doesn’t want a temporary one without a hostage deal. But as things stand now, a hostage deal is far off as Qatar, which is mediating the talks, said the prospects of an agreement are “not very promising.”
The US resolution also warns Israel against launching an assault on Rafah under the current conditions. “The Security Council should underscore that such a major ground offensive should not proceed, under the current circumstances,” the resolution reads.
But the US warning is meaningless since the Biden administration is not considering imposing any consequences on Israel if it invades Rafah and is still providing unconditional military support.

But as things stand now, a hostage deal is far off as Qatar, which is mediating the talks, said the prospects of an agreement are “not very promising.”
The US resolution also warns Israel against launching an assault on Rafah under the current conditions. “The Security Council should underscore that such a major ground offensive should not proceed, under the current circumstances,” the resolution reads.
But the US warning is meaningless since the Biden administration is not considering imposing any consequences on Israel if it invades Rafah and is still providing unconditional military support.

"Is American Journalism Headed Toward an ‘Extinction-Level Event’?” asks an Atlantic headline. The numbers are deadly. The grimmest news was from the Los Angeles Times, the biggest newspaper outside the East Coast. The paper announced it was cutting 115 people, more than 20 percent of its newsroom. In June of last year, the Times dropped 74 people. Some 2,900 newspapers have closed or merged since 2005.
Sports Illustrated is in trouble. The Washington Post, NBC News, ABC News, CNN, NPR, Vice, Vox, and BuzzFeed, among others, have shed hundreds of journalists over the past year. (The author of the Atlantic article himself was a layoff from the Post.) Job losses among print, digital, and broadcast-news organizations grew by nearly 50% during 2023.
The reason for all this professional carnage, according to the article? Something something the Internet something something digital advertising revenues blah blah social media.
One proposed solution calls for “direct and muscular government intervention” and legislation forcing Facebook and others to pay for “news” they feature from sources like the New York Times. Yet, as journalist Glenn Greenwald asked, “Will there ever come a moment when liberal journalists who work for corporate outlets, and who are being completely consumed by layoffs and financial failures and audience indifference, ask whether there’s anything they’ve done to contribute to the profession’s failure?”
The answer, of course, is no. No one important is going to ask.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Monday boasted that he had worked “for decades” to block the establishment of a Palestinian state.
“Everyone knows that I am the one who for decades blocked the establishment of a Palestinian state that would endanger our existence,” Netanyahu said, according to The Times of Israel.
He made the comments while discussing a plan to introduce legislation into the Knesset that would match a declaration made by the Israeli cabinet on Sunday that rejected “international diktats” related to a Palestinian state.
The strong statements came after reports said that the US and some of its Arab partners were looking to unveil an outline for a long-term peace deal that would include a “firm timeline” toward a Palestinian state.

One of the two High Court judges who will rule on Julian Assange’s bid to stop his extradition to the U.S. represented the U.K.’s Secret Intelligence Service (MI6) and the Ministry of Defence, Declassified has found.
Justice Jeremy Johnson has also been a specially vetted barrister, cleared by the U.K. authorities to access top-secret information.
Johnson will sit with Dame Victoria Sharp, his senior judge, to decide the fate of the WikiLeaks co-founder. If extradited, Assange faces a maximum sentence of 175 years.
His persecution by the U.S. authorities has been at the behest of Washington’s intelligence and security services, with whom the U.K. has deep relations.
Assange’s journalistic career has been marked by exposing the dirty secrets of the U.S. and U.K. national security establishments. He now faces a judge who has acted for, and received security clearance from, some of those same state agencies.
As with previous judges who have ruled on Assange’s case, this raises concerns about institutional conflicts of interest.

The judge has had time to watch deposition videos, look over evidence, and prepare a series of questions for attorneys. Both the plaintiffs (FAN) and the defendants (EPA) have approximately 40 minutes each for their remarks, though last week the judge said that he would like most of that time to be used to answer his questions, favoring a dialogue rather than presentations.
The FAN legal team has also advised us that Tuesday’s proceedings will likely be very technical and focused on science and risk assessment.
The hearing will be streamed live for the public on Zoom:
