The Covert Psychological Manipulation of Thought
"I naively assumed people went into psychology because they wanted to help people. But actually, vast numbers of the highest performing psychologists at university are cherry picked by, and I'm sure you can guess who, advertising companies, gambling companies. Now it's Silicon Valley. But also these nudge units."
Dr. John Campbell: "Nudge is an interesting euphemism, isn't it? Nudge means covert psychological manipulation of thought."
"One of the tricky things with the nudges is that so many people, and I think it's sort of there's an inverse correlation with the more educated and more letters after your name, people think they're immune. Oh, I'd never fall for marketing. I'd never fall for advertising and nudges. I'm too smart. I probably had that arrogance in my 20s myself."

JPMorgan Chase, BlackRock Drop Out of Massive UN Climate Alliance in Stunning Move
JPMorgan Chase and institutional investors BlackRock and State Street Global Advisors (SSGA) on Thursday (Feb 15) announced that they are quitting or, in the case of BlackRock, substantially scaling back involvement in a massive United Nations climate alliance formed to combat global warming through corporate sustainability agreements.
In a statement, the New York-based JPMorgan Chase explained that it would exit the so-called Climate Action 100+ investor group because of the expansion of its in-house sustainability team and the establishment of its climate risk framework in recent years. BlackRock and State Street, which both manage trillions of dollars in assets, said the alliance's climate initiatives had gone too far, expressing concern about potential legal issues as well.
The stunning announcements come as the largest financial institutions in the U.S. and worldwide face an onslaught of pressure from consumer advocates and Republican states over their environmental, social and governance (ESG) priorities.

Erdogan Vows To Help Rebuild Gaza On First Visit To Cairo In Over A Decade
Ankara and Cairo also pledged to increase bilateral trade by $15bn
Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan arrived in Cairo on 14 February for his first visit to the Egyptian capital in 12 years.
The Turkish head of state was received by his counterpart, Abdel Fattah al-Sisi, and the Turkish ambassador to Egypt, Salih Mutlu Sen.
The Turkish president previously indicated that the bilateral discussions will focus on defense, economics, tourism, and trade, as well as addressing Israel’s aggressions on Palestinians in Gaza. Erdogan also seeks to enhance cooperation within the Arabic-speaking world.
“I am happy to visit Cairo again after a long absence,” Erdogan said during today’s visit. “We share a common history with Egypt, and we want to raise the level of our bilateral relations.”
He noted the increasingly difficult situation in Gaza and Israel's continuous acts of aggression against the besieged enclave.
“The situation in Gaza topped the agenda of the discussions with the Egyptian President,” Erdogan said. "Israel targeted homes, places of worship, and international institutions in the Gaza Strip and did not care about international condemnation.”
He foregrounded the importance of delivering aid to Gaza, asserting that “we cannot accept the displacement of the population of the Gaza Strip … We will continue to cooperate with Egypt to rebuild Gaza and are ready to work with it in this regard.”

Israeli Military Says Hamas Will Not Be Defeated in Gaza Offensive
Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) officials have concluded that even if Israel can dismantle Hamas in Gaza, the group will continue to exist. American defense officials have warned that Israel’s indiscriminate killing in Gaza will fuel armed resistance among Palestinians.
Israel’s Channel 12 reported on Thursday (Feb 15) that even if the IDF eliminates Hamas organization in Gaza, the group will continue to fight Israel as “a terror group and a guerrilla group.” The Israeli defense officials concluded in their report that “authentic support remains” for Hamas among Palestinians.
The Israeli attacks on Gaza have killed tens of thousands of Palestinian civilians, including over 12,000 children.

Major Victory for Russian Army as Ukraine Forces Flee Eastern City
Following a year that saw little change in control of territory, the Russian army has secured a major victory in its war in Ukraine as Ukrainian forces have retreated from the eastern city of Avdiivka.
Shortly after midnight Saturday (Feb 17) in Ukraine, the country's newly-installed top commander, General Oleksandr Syrsky, announced that he had ordered troops to evacuate the city. Surrounded in three directions by the Russian army, Ukrainian soldiers in the city found themselves in a rapidly-tightening noose.
“Based on the operational situation around Avdiivka, in order to avoid encirclement and preserve the lives and health of servicemen, I decided to withdraw our units from the city and move to defense on more favorable lines," said Syrsky in a Facebook post.
The capture of the city is the most significant triumph for Russia since it took Bakhmut last May.

U.S. Asks for Help from China and India to Stop Russian Nuclear Space Weapon: Report
US Secretary of State Antony Blinken spoke with his Chinese and Indian counterparts at a conference in Munich, Germany, on Friday and Saturday (Feb 17), trying to convince them to talk to Russian officials about not putting a nuclear weapon in space, according to The New York Times.
Blinken told his Chinese and Indian counterparts that the detonation of a nuclear weapon in space targeting US satellites would also harm Chinese and Indian satellites, leading all global communications to fail, according to the NYT. US officials’ concerns over Russia’s possible use of a nuclear weapon in space follow intelligence revealed to the public on Wednesday (Feb 14) that the country had new nuclear capabilities that posed a “serious national security threat.”
Putting a nuclear weapon in space is in violation of an over 50-year treaty that has so far stopped the proliferation of the weapons into the region, according to the NYT. Besides telecommunications concerns, Blinken also warned that debris from the possible nuclear explosions would pose a threat to low-earth orbit navigation, putting further satellite operations at risk.
Blinken spoke with the two officials, believing that Russia would be more likely to listen to them as opposed to the US.

Israel Responsible For Sabotage Of Key Iranian Gas Pipelines: Report
The destruction of civilian infrastructure in Iran was considered a 'major escalation' in the shadow war between Tel Aviv and Tehran. [The disruption temporarily took out around a sixth of Iran’s daily natural gas production, causing outages in several regions.]
Israel was behind clandestine strikes on two critical gas pipelines inside Iran this week, which disrupted the flow of gas to millions of citizens in the middle of winter, according to western officials and a military strategist affiliated with Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) who spoke with the New York Times (NYT).
The unnamed officials called the Israeli sabotage attack “a major symbolic strike” and “a stark warning of the damage that Israel could inflict” as the country sinks deeper into conflict with the Resistance Axis.
According to the report, Tel Aviv was also responsible for a “separate blast on Thursday inside a chemical factory on the outskirts of Tehran that rattled a neighborhood and sent plumes of smoke and fire into the air.” However, Iranian officials say the factory explosion was caused by an accident.
On 14 February, twin explosions hit Iranian pipelines that carry around 57 million cubic meters of natural gas and run for more than 1,000 kilometers in the provinces of Fars and Chahar Mahal Bakhtiari. The disruption temporarily took out around a sixth of Iran’s daily natural gas production, causing outages in several regions.

Egypt Building Walled Camp in Sinai Desert to Absorb Palestinian Refugees from Gaza
Israel will likely try to push Palestinians from Rafah into the camp
Egypt is building an 8-square-mile walled enclosure in the Sinai Desert near Gaza to prepare for an influx of Palestinian refugees as Israel is vowing to launch an assault on Rafah, which borders Egypt and is packed with about 1.5 million Palestinians.
The revelation of Egypt’s construction, which was reported by The Wall Street Journal and an Egyptian rights group, signals Cairo is caving to Israeli pressure to allow Palestinians to enter its territory.
Egyptian officials told the Journal that more than 100,000 people would be able to fit into the camps they are constructing. If a mass exodus of Palestinians from Gaza does happen, the Egyptian officials said they want to limit the number of refugees they allow in to between 50,000 and 60,000.
The Sinai Foundation for Human Rights first reported on the construction on Wednesday and said the project is expected to be completed within 10 days. Egyptian officials told the Journal they expect a broad Israeli offensive on Rafah could start “within weeks.” Israel must be aware of the construction and will likely try to push as many Palestinians into the camp as it can.
Israeli government officials have not been shy about their desire to cleanse the Gaza Strip of its Palestinian population and re-establish Jewish settlements. A document prepared by Israel’s Intelligence Ministry that was leaked back in October[2,3] said the best-case scenario for Israel would be to send all 2.3 million Palestinians living in Gaza into Egypt.

UAE, Other Arab Nations Restrict US Ability to Launch Airstrikes from Its Territory
Arab countries don't want to be perceived as supporting the Israeli slaughter in Gaza and some want better relations with Iran
The UAE and other Arab nations are increasingly restricting the US’s ability to launch airstrikes from their soil as the US has been bombing Iraq, Syria, and Yemen, POLITICO reported on Wednesday.
The US relies on its military presence in several Arab nations to support its wars in the Middle East. Basing and overflights are being restricted as the populations of the Arab states don’t want to appear too supportive of the US as it backs the Israeli slaughter in Gaza.
The Jordanian government has come under increasing criticism from its citizens and members of parliament for its military relationship with the US after three US troops were killed at a secretive base in northeast Jordan on the Syrian border.
Sources told POLITICO that another reason the UAE and other unnamed Arab states are restricting US operations is because they seek better relations with Iran. “They don’t want to appear like they’re against Iran, and they don’t want to appear too close to the West and Israel for public opinion reasons,” one Western official said.
The UAE and Kuwait restored diplomatic relations with Iran in 2022, which was followed by Saudi Arabia last year. The diplomatic push threw a wrench in the US and Israel’s plans to form an anti-Iran NATO-style alliance in the region, which was a key goal of the Abraham Accords.

Israeli Forces Killed 75% of All Journalists That Died in War Zones Last Year
A global watchdog group for the treatment of journalists found that Israeli forces were responsible for about three-quarters of all journalists killed in war zones during 2023. The Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) found that 72 Palestinian reporters were killed last year.
“More than three-quarters of the 99 journalists and media workers killed worldwide in 2023 died in the Israel-Gaza war, the majority of them Palestinians killed in Israeli attacks on Gaza," the report concluded. “The conflict claimed the lives of more journalists in three months than have ever been killed in a single country over an entire year.”
In the last three months of 2023, Israel killed 72 Palestinian and three Lebanese journalists. Two Israeli journalists were killed in the Hamas attack on October 7. Excluding the Israeli onslaught in Gaza, CPJ found worldwide deaths of journalists last year was less than half of 2022’s total. At least 11 Palestinian journalists have been killed so far in 2024.

‘Drop the Charges,’ Says Amnesty Ahead of Key Julian Assange Hearing
Amnesty International on Tuesday (Feb 13) renewed its call for the U.S. government to drop charges against jailed WikiLeaks publisher Julian Assange, whose final hearing before the United Kingdom’s High Court regarding his extradition to the United States is fast approaching.
Assange’s February 20-21 hearing before the High Court will determine whether the Australian journalist—who has been imprisoned in London’s Belmarsh Prison since April 2019—has exhausted all of his U.K. appeals and will be extradited to the United States, where he has been charged with violating the 1917 Espionage Act and the Computer Fraud and Abuse Act for publishing classified U.S. military documents and files on WikiLeaks over a decade ago.
“The risk to publishers and investigative journalists around the world hangs in the balance. Should Julian Assange be sent to the U.S. and prosecuted there, global media freedoms will be on trial, too,” said Julia Hall, Amnesty International’s expert on counterterrorism and criminal justice in Europe.
“Assange will suffer personally from these politically motivated charges and the worldwide media community will be on notice that they too are not safe,” Hall added. “The public’s right to information about what their governments are doing in their name will be profoundly undermined. The U.S. must drop the charges under the Espionage Act against Assange and bring an end to his arbitrary detention in the U.K.”

Leading Scientific Journal Publishes Fake AI Generated Paper About Rat With Giant Penis
🤡@COVID19Up: A leading scientific journal faces humiliation after it published a completely fake paper, purportedly written by Chinese researchers, which contained AI generated images of a rat with a penis bigger than its own body.
The Telegraph reports that the journal Frontiers in Cell and Development Biology published a paper that claimed to show the signaling pathway of sperm stem cells, but depicted a rat sitting upright with a massive dick and four giant testicles.
Remarkably, the paper found its way into the journal, where it was read by scientists who immediately recognised the images and descriptions were not grounded in “any known biology.”
The journal retracted the paper, issued an apology and announced that it is working to “correct the record.”
