A Joe Biden administration official told a group of Muslim American leaders that Israel is unwilling to take steps towards Palestinian statehood

A top US official admitted that the White House had made some missteps in how it has handled the Israeli slaughter in Gaza. President Biden has shipped 25,000 tonnes of weapons to Israel per Euro-Med Human Rights Monitor, and refused to place any conditions on the aid the US provides to Israel. The unfettered support has allowed Israel to conduct a genocidal military campaign that has killed tens of thousands of Palestinian civilians and pushed hundreds of thousands into famine.

On Thursday, Jon Finer, a deputy national security adviser, told Arab American leaders in Michigan that Biden had made “missteps” in handling Gaza and that Israel had no intentions of allowing Palestinian statehood. The aide made the remarks during a closed-door meeting, but an audio recording was leaked to the New York Times.

“We are very well aware that we have missteps in the course of responding to this crisis since Oct. 7,” Finer said. The Times did not report if the aide explained what Biden believed his missteps were.

The mistakes Finer admitted Biden had made are rhetorical, such as not issuing a faster condemnation of calls for genocide from Israeli government officials. Many top Israeli government officials, including Prime Minister Netanyahu, have made remarks that have incited the genocide in Gaza.

After the meeting, participants in the meeting were dissatisfied because Finer would not agree to any policy changes. The US has provided Israel with near-daily weapons shipments that allow the Israeli forces to continue fighting. Washington has refused to condemn any Israeli actions, even well-documented war crimes.

Egypt Threatens Israel With Suspension Of Peace Treaty If Rafah Invaded: WSJ

Israel seeks to forcibly expel Gaza's 2.3 million inhabitants to Egypt's Sinai under the guise of humanitarian concerns

Egyptian officials warned their Israeli counterparts that any Israeli ground invasion of the southern Gaza city of Rafah "would effectively suspend" the 1979 peace treaty between the two countries, the Wall Street Journal (WSJ) reported on 11 February.

Israel Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced on Friday that an Israeli ground operation in Rafah, located on Egypt's border and where hundreds of thousands of displaced Palestinians are living in tents, was necessary to destroy the four brigades of Hamas' armed wing allegedly present there.

"There is limited space and great risk in putting Rafah under further military escalation due to the growing number of Palestinians there," Egyptian Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry said on Saturday during a press briefing, warning that an escalation would have "dire consequences."

Aid agencies have warned of a "blood bath" worse than that already taking place in Gaza should Israel move ahead with such an operation.

US Intel Determines Israel 'Far From Defeating' Hamas

Hamas dismissed Israeli claims that its battalions are being dismantled as mere ‘illusions’ aimed at boosting morale

The New York Times (NYT) reported on 9 January that while Israel’s war in Gaza has “degraded” Hamas’ combat capabilities, the resistance group remains far from defeated.

Israel has “degraded Hamas’s fighting capabilities but is not close to eliminating the group, which is the principal war aim of the Israeli government,” US officials told members of Congress this week, according to NYT.

According to the report, US officials are also expressing doubt that destroying Hamas is a realistic option for Israel.

“It operates like a guerrilla force, hidden in a network of tunnels that are difficult to penetrate. Weakening the combat strength of the group may be a far more achievable goal,” NYT wrote.

During the closed-door intelligence briefing in Congress, there was no talk of how many Hamas fighters have been killed.

Israel maintains it has killed around 10,000 of the group’s combatants.

“American intelligence officials have refrained from offering specific estimates of how many Hamas fighters have been killed, arguing that such estimates are neither accurate nor meaningful.”

Israel continues to maintain that it has struck the majority of Hamas’ battalions across Gaza with devastating blows.

But the group is still able to confront Israeli troops in the northern, central, and southern parts of the enclave. Moreover, it can fire rockets at Israeli settlements from several areas in the strip.

Ironically, a few couple weeks ago[11/11], Antiwar.com reported in “Top US General Warns Israel’s Killing of Civilians Will Create More Hamas Members” that “Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Gen. Charles Q. Brown has expressed concern that Israel’s killing of Palestinian civilians will help Hamas recruit more militants and cautioned against a long war in Gaza.”

Of course, Israel is not going to listen to the Joint Chiefs of Staff chairman in regards to avoiding a long war. On Dec 1st, Antiwar.com published “Israel Planning for Gaza War To Last Over a Year”

“One source said, ‘This will be a very long war . . . We’re currently not near halfway to achieving our objectives.’ ”

Mutant Wolves Roaming Chernobyl Exclusion Zone Have Developed Cancer-resilient Abilities: Study

Mutant wolves that roam the human-free Chernobyl Exclusion Zone have developed cancer-resilient genomes that could be key to helping humans fight the deadly disease, according to a study.

The wild animals have managed to adapt and survive the high levels of radiation that have plagued the area after a nuclear reactor at the Chernobyl power plant exploded in 1986, becoming the world’s worst nuclear accident.

Humans abandoned the area after the explosion leaked cancer-causing radiation into the environment, and a 1,000-square-mile zone was roped off to prevent further human exposure.

But in the nearly 38 years since the nuclear disaster, wildlife has reclaimed the area — including packs of wolves that seem to be unaffected by the chronic exposure to the radiation.

Cara Love, an evolutionary biologist and ecotoxicologist in Shane Campbell-Staton’s lab at Princeton University, has been studying how the mutant wolves have evolved to survive their radioactive environment and presented her findings at the Annual Meeting of the Society of Integrative and Comparative Biology in Seattle, Washington, last month.

In 2014, Love and her colleagues went inside the Chernobyl Exclusion Zone and put GPS collars equipped with radiation dosimeters on the wild wolves.

They also took blood from the animals to understand their responses to the cancer-causing radiation, according to a release published by the Society of Integrative and Comparative Biology.

With the specialized collars, the researchers can get real-time measurements of where the wolves are and how much radiation they are exposed to, Love said.

The charges stem from an encounter in December 2020, when Hall and another deputy were sent to the residence of an "extremely inebriated" woman, according to court documents.

Investigators said the woman was taken to the hospital, but Hall returned to her home with alcohol and had sex with her 13 hours later. He allegedly tried to hide the sexual encounter from investigators.

Hall was given pre-termination papers on June 8, 2021, after a Bullitt County Sheriff's investigation. He resigned two days later, before he was fired. On the same day, he was sworn in as a part-time officer for the Pioneer Village Police Department, but he was placed on administrative unpaid leave after the indictment, which alleged Hall "engaged in sexual intercourse with another person who was incapable of consent due to being physically helpless."

Hall told investigators after his arrest that the woman had asked him to return to her home when he was finished with his shift.

"That is probably not a good idea," Hall said.

The conversation was captured on Hall's body camera video.

Court documents allege that Hall changed his mind and later admitted to returning to the woman's home with a bottle of vodka and having sex with her.

Audio Cloning Can Take Over A Phone Call In Real Time Without The Speakers Knowing

"Audio cloning can take over a phone call in real time w/o the speakers knowing" - The implications of this are monumental. And this should not be surprising, I bet this has been possible for decades, well the cloning at least. The age of deep fakes.

Generative AI could be listening to your phone calls and hijacking them with fake biometric audio for fraud or manipulation purposes, according to new research published by Security Intelligence. In the wake of a Hong Kong fraud case that saw an employee transfer US$25 million in funds to five bank accounts after a virtual meeting with what turned out to be audio-video deepfakes of senior management, the biometrics and digital identity world is on high alert, and the threats are growing more sophisticated by the day.

A blog post by Chenta Lee, chief architect of threat intelligence at IBM Security, breaks down how researchers from IBM X-Force successfully intercepted and covertly hijacked a live conversation by using LLM to understand the conversation and manipulate it for malicious purposes – without the speakers knowing it was happening.

“Alarmingly,” writes Lee, “it was fairly easy to construct this highly intrusive capability, creating a significant concern about its use by an attacker driven by monetary incentives and limited to no lawful boundary.”

Hack used a mix of AI technologies and a focus on keywords

By combining large language models (LLM), speech-to-text, text-to-speech and voice cloning tactics, X-Force was able to dynamically modify the context and content of a live phone conversation. The method eschewed the use of generative AI to create a whole fake voice and focused instead on replacing keywords in context – for example, masking a spoken real bank account number with an AI-generated one. Tactics can be deployed through a number of vectors, such as malware or compromised VOIP services. A three second audio sample is enough to create a convincing voice clone, and the LLM takes care of parsing and semantics.

“It is akin to transforming the people in the conversation into dummy puppets,” writes Lee. “And due to the preservation of the original context, it is difficult to detect.” With advanced social engineering added to the mix, the size of the attack surface only grows. Jailed Imran Khan Claims Electoral Win , ‘Head-Spinning Upset’ as Imran Khan’s PTI Wins Most Seats in Pakistani Election

Supporters of the former prime minister and cricket star have won the most seats in the National Assembly despite opposition from the country's military establishment

Independent candidates affiliated with imprisoned Pakistani political leader Imran Khan's Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party have won the most seats in elections for the National Assembly.

Vote counting is ongoing, but the Election Commission of Pakistan announced that independent candidates have won 98 seats so far, with the winners of 22 seats still undetermined. The majority of the independents are affiliated with Khan's PTI party.

Members of the PTI ran as independents after the party was effectively banned last month. The Pakistani Supreme Court ruled that the party could not use its traditional electoral symbol, a cricket bat. Because many PTI supporters in rural areas are illiterate, the symbol would be the only way to identify the party on the ballot for many.

Khan was slapped with three jail sentences last week and barred from holding any public post for ten years. The former premier has been the target of lawfare since being ousted in a US-backed legislative coup in early 2022.

The PTI has been the target of harassment and even abductions of its candidates by pro-military elements that do not wish to see Khan or his party return to power.

The party has also seen restrictions imposed on rallies and media coverage, as authorities ordered journalists and television stations not to mention Khan's party as part of their election coverage.

The Pakistan Muslim League Nawaz Party (PMLN) has won 69 seats, while the Pakistan People's Party (PPP) has the third-most with 51 seats.

None of the country's three major parties will win the necessary 169 seats to form a government on their own, meaning a coalition must be formed to determine the next prime minister.

Khan used an AI-generated video of himself to claim victory in the election from prison, asking his supporters to “now show the strength of protecting your vote.”
