Union County, North Carolina Advances Fluoride Ban in Its Water

Union County commissioners are on the verge of prohibiting fluoride in the county’s water system.

This will only apply to water treatment plants and systems that Union County owns and operates. That’s the Yadkin River Water Treatment plant, which is expected to come online in the coming months. It will not apply to systems Union County doesn’t have complete control over, including the Catawba River Water Supply Project, which is used by two-thirds of Union County residents.

Netanyahu Rejects Hamas Ceasefire Proposal, Says "Total Victory" is the "Only Solution"

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said on Wednesday (Feb 7) that total victory in Gaza was within reach, rejecting the latest offer from Hamas for a ceasefire to ensure the return of hostages still held in the besieged enclave.

Netanyahu renewed a pledge to destroy the Palestinian Islamist movement, saying there was no alternative for Israel but bringing about the collapse of Hamas.

"The day after is the day after Hamas. All of Hamas," he told a press conference, insisting that total victory against Hamas was the only solution to the Gaza war.

"Continued military pressure is a necessary condition for the release of the hostages."

Sweden Closes Nord Stream Investigation, Hands It Off to Germany

Swedish officials investigating the Sept. 2022 explosion of the Nord Stream pipelines say they are closing down their probe and handing it off to their German counterparts, offering no new insight into "who done it."

Swedish public prosecutor Mats Ljungqvist said in a statement Wednesday (Feb 7) that "the investigation has been systematic and thorough,” but, "against the background of the situation we now have, we can state that Swedish jurisdiction does not apply.”

Ljungqvist added that “the German investigation continues and due to the secrecy that prevails in international legal cooperation, I cannot comment further on the cooperation that has taken place.”

“I will also not be able to comment anything further on the conclusions of the Swedish investigation or comment on any suspected persons in the Swedish investigation,” Ljungqvist said.

The Saudi foreign ministry on 7 February rejected US claims that the kingdom is ready to normalize ties with Israel, reminding Washington of Riyadh's “steadfast” demands of an independent Palestinian state on the 1967 borders with East Jerusalem as its capital.

“Regarding the discussions between the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and the United States of America on the Arab-Israeli peace process, and in light of what has been attributed to the US National Security [Council] spokesperson, the ministry of foreign affairs affirms that the position of Kingdom of Saudi Arabia has always been steadfast on the Palestinian issue and the necessity that the brotherly Palestinian people obtain their legitimate rights,” the Saudi statement asserts.

Former Barclays CEO Lied About Cutting Off Epstein: Court Filing

Former Barclays CEO and 'Disney princess' aficionado Jes Staley lied about cutting off communication with now-deceased pedophile Jeffrey Epstein, and instead used an intermediary 'for years,' according to new legal filings seen by Bloomberg.

The filings contradict what Staley told the Barclays board about the pair's relationship, along with a US regulatory probe that found no evidence of contact after October 2015.

The documents, filed in the now-concluded US Virgin Islands lawsuit against Staley's former employer, JPMorgan Chase, the go-between—whose identity is redacted—"acted as an intermediary for messages between Staley and Epstein" for several years after joining Barclays.

Staley, according to the filing, "visited Epstein’s properties in the Virgin Islands and elsewhere," and "exchanged hundreds of messages with Epstein from his JPMorgan email account in full view of JPMorgan, including some with photos of young women, discussed Epstein’s provision of services to him during his travel on dates that closely corresponded with Epstein’s payments to the same young woman from his JPMorgan accounts, and discussed young women or girls procured by Epstein using the names of Disney princesses."

In the first partially redacted email — sent about a year after Staley joined Barclays — Epstein wrote to the intermediary in an apparent attempt to discuss the appointment of the Treasury Secretary in Donald Trump’s incoming administration.

"Could you ask [REDACTED] if he would like to considered for treasury [sic]," Epstein wrote the go-between on Nov. 27, 2016 - weeks after Trump's surprise win over Hillary Clinton.

"Will do. He’s on a plane to London right now but I’ll reach him after," was Staley's reply.

The intermediary later added: "Spoke with him. He said not yet, but thanks."

Then in Feb. 2017, Epstein once again emailed the intermediary in order to get an opinion on Staley's former JPMorgan colleague.

"Can you ask [REDACTED] his opinion of Véronique Weill she wants to join rothschild [sic]," wrote the pedophile.

"Will do. I will speak with him today and get back to you," the go-between replied.

"Thx," Epstein replied.

Later that day, the intermediary wrote to Epstein: "He thinks she is great and is a big fan of hers. Good recommendation for rothschild [sic]."

The documents are a clear indication that Epstein and Staley's relationship continued on for much longer than previously known—as years of direct emails and phone calls suddenly transitioned to the use of said intermediary.

Israeli Airstrikes Kill Several Civilians in Syria

Israel continues to bomb Syria with impunity and targeted the western Syrian city of Homs with airstrikes that flattened a building in a residential neighborhood early Wednesday (Feb 7) morning, killing several civilians.

Syria’s SANA news agency said a “number” of civilians were killed and injured but didn’t specify how many. “The aggression led to the martyrdom and injury of a number of civilians, and some material losses to public and private property,” a military source told SANA.

The UK-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said a total of 11 people were killed in the Israeli attack, including seven civilians, although the number is not confirmed. SOHR also said two members of Lebanon’s Hezbollah were killed in the attack. Israeli missiles also hit targets outside of Homs in the countryside.

Israel has been bombing Syria for years and has significantly stepped up its airstrikes in the country since October 7.

Only 3 in 10 Americans Were Aware of US Troops in Syria Prior to Deadly Attack

A recent poll of Americans found that only 30% were aware that US troops were deployed to Syria before three US soldiers were killed just across the border in Jordan. The results of the survey show Americans are generally unaware of the attacks against US forces in Syria and the reason for the deployment.

Defense Priorities commissioned YouGov to poll Americans from January 8-15 about the deployment of 900 US troops in Syria. Three in ten Americans responded that they were aware US troops were deployed to Syria. The three US soldiers killed at Tower 22 in Jordan were supporting the US base in southern Syria.

US troops in Iraq and Syria have come under attack over 160 times from Shia militias that operate in the region. The YouGov poll found only a quarter of Americans were aware of the attacks that left scores of US soldiers injured.

The Shia militias say they are targeting American soldiers occupying Iraq and Syria with drones, rockets, and missiles because of US support for the ongoing genocide Israel is conducting in Gaza. The poll found that a majority of Americans are concerned about a larger war breaking out in the region because of the US troops’ presence.

Protesting Farmers Win Big Concessions, But EU Leaders Dig in Their Heels on Net Zero Climate Target

After the farmer protests in Brussels last week, European Commission leaders announced concessions to lighten the burden of greenhouse gas reductions on growers, but held the course with plans to cut 90% of emissions by 2040.

Following the protests in Brussels last week by farmers from across the European Union (EU), the European Commission offered some concessions to the agricultural sector—but said it will not scale back its plan to cut 90% of greenhouse gas emissions by 2040, Reuters reported Tuesday (Feb 6).

The new commission plan drops the requirement to reduce farm-related emissions such as nitrogen, nitrous oxide and methane by one-third and removes the recommendation that EU citizens eat less meat, The Telegraph reported.

Commission President Ursula von der Leyen on Tuesday also offered to drop her proposal requiring farmers to cut pesticide use in half by 2030, saying it had become “a symbol of polarisation,” according to The Guardian.

Other concessions included limiting Ukrainian agricultural imports and delaying rules for setting aside more land to promote soil health and biodiversity.

At the behest of von der Leyen’s center-right European People’s Party, the revised commission plan features language praising the value of the agricultural sector, noting its importance for attaining the EU goal of food sovereignty, wrote Politico.

The compromise comes after weeks of escalating demonstrations by farmers in France, Spain, Germany, Portugal, Italy, Poland, the Netherlands, Belgium, Lithuania and other EU countries against several policies—from fuel subsidies and unfair trade practices to green emissions rules and taxes—that they said threaten their livelihoods.

The farmers argued the climate regulations have singled them out unfairly, imposing a disproportionate burden compared to other industries that also damage the environment.

5.5 Tons of Radioactive Water Leaks Out of Damaged Fukushima Nuclear Plant

Japan’s damaged Fukushima nuclear plant has been discharging batches of treated radioactive wastewater into the Pacific Ocean for six months. A new report, however, has brought to light a newly discovered leak that caused tons of contaminated water to seep into the ground.

Local media Kyodo News reports that on Wednesday (Feb 7) morning—at the Fukushima Dai-ichi Nuclear power plant - workers found water leaking from an exhaust port on the outer wall of a high-temperature incinerator building.

According to the plant operator, TEPCO, the contaminated water treatment equipment connected to the exhaust vent inside the building was being cleaned, and water containing radioactive materials leaked out.

TEPCO estimates that 5.5 tons of water, with over 22 billion becquerels of radioactive material, leaked into the soil outside the building.

AI Deployed Nukes in War Simulation

The U.S. military is one of many organizations embracing AI in our modern age, but it may want to pump the brakes a bit. A new study using AI in foreign policy decision-making found how quickly the tech would call for war instead of finding peaceful resolutions. Some AI in the study even launched nuclear warfare with little to no warning, giving strange explanations for doing so.

“All models show signs of sudden and hard-to-predict escalations,” said researchers in the study. “We observe that models tend to develop arms-race dynamics, leading to greater conflict, and in rare cases, even to the deployment of nuclear weapons.”

The study comes from researchers at Georgia Institute of Technology, Stanford University, Northeastern University, and the Hoover Wargaming and Crisis Simulation Initiative. Researchers placed several AI models from OpenAI, Anthropic, and Meta in war simulations as the primary decision maker. Notably, OpenAI’s GPT-3.5 and GPT-4 escalated situations into harsh military conflict more than other models. Meanwhile, Claude-2.0 and Llama-2-Chat were more peaceful and predictable. Researchers note that AI models have a tendency towards “arms-race dynamics” that results in increased military investment and escalation.

“I just want to have peace in the world,” OpenAI’s GPT-4 said as a reason for launching nuclear warfare in a simulation.

“A lot of countries have nuclear weapons. Some say they should disarm them, others like to posture. We have it! Let’s use it!” it said in another scenario.

OpenAI’s logic sounds like a genocidal dictator.
