Donald Trump signed the memorandum directing the withdrawal from organizations deemed to be ‘contrary to the interests of the US’

US President Donald Trump signed a memorandum on 7 January 2026 directing the withdrawal of his country from dozens of international organizations, conventions, and UN bodies deemed “contrary to the interests of the United States.”

The memorandum was addressed to the heads of executive departments and agencies and invokes presidential authority under the Constitution and US law to order immediate action.

Trump tied the move directly to Executive Order 14199, issued on 4 February 2025, which ordered a sweeping review of US participation in all international intergovernmental organizations and treaties.

That earlier order tasked the secretary of state, in consultation with the US representative to the UN, with determining which bodies run counter to US interests.

According to the memorandum, the secretary of state has now submitted the required findings, which Trump said he reviewed alongside his cabinet.

Authorities in Damascus are seeking to pressure the Kurdish-led SDF to relinquish its arms and territory

Syrian government forces shelled civilian areas in two Kurdish neighborhoods in Aleppo for the third day on 8 January, including near a hospital treating injured civilians, while issuing evacuation orders and threats to bomb a church-owned building sheltering displaced people.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR) reported that government forces have indiscriminately fired dozens of artillery shells, mortars, and rocket launchers at residential neighborhoods in Ashrafieh and Sheikh Maqsoud on Thursday.

Local sources speaking with SOHR said that government forces and allied armed factions fired heavy artillery shells on the outskirts of the Othman hospital, even though it was crowded with dozens of wounded civilians.

Syrian government forces deployed troops, tanks, and heavy weapons to Aleppo before launching an attack on Tuesday to take control of the Kurdish enclave in Syria's second-largest city.

Syrian state TV channel Al-Ikhbariyah published a map of the Sheikh Maqsoud neighborhood in Aleppo, marking specific areas and ordering residents to leave their homes, warning that government forces would attack their neighborhoods and houses.

Yesterday, On Thursday, 8 January, Two Civilian Staff Members Of Othman Hospital In Aleppo’s Ashrafieh Neighborhood Were Extrajudicially Executed After Forces Affiliated With The Caretaker Government’s Ministry Of Defense Shelled The Hospital With Rpgs And Stormed The Facility, According To The Syrian Observatory For Human Rights (sohr).

The victims, a pharmacist born in 1989 and his uncle, a hospital technician born in 1968, were arrested from inside the hospital before being executed, despite having no military or political affiliation and remaining at work to provide urgent medical care amid ongoing clashes and shelling in the area.
