One year after Israeli forces abducted Dr. Hussam Idris Abu Safia, director of Kamal Adwan Hospital in northern Gaza, his son Elias has demanded his immediate release. Marking the anniversary on 27 December, Elias shared a statement on X recalling the moment his father was taken amid the destruction of Gaza’s healthcare system. “He refused to abandon the children and the wounded at the hospital, and for that, he was detained,” Elias wrote, accompanied by an image of Gaza reduced to rubble.

Dr. Safia has been held in Israeli prisons since 27 December 2024, reportedly transferred between Sde Teiman and Ofer prisons, amid repeated reports of abuse, torture, and worsening health. His lawyer, Ghaid Qassem, said that during rare visits, Dr. Safia displayed visible signs of torture, severe skin diseases, and significant weight loss, warning that prisoners urgently need medical care.

Despite international condemnation and repeated calls for his release, Israeli authorities have ignored all appeals. His name has appeared on multiple lists of proposed releases, including during abductee exchanges and the 11 October ceasefire negotiations, but his administrative detention was recently extended by six months. Elias emphasized, “A full year of injustice has passed. Today, we ask for nothing but his freedom.”

US Missiles Hit Two Nigerian Villages Far From Intended Target: Nigerian Government

Several buildings were destroyed in a village in Kwara state

Two villages in Nigeria that were hit by US missiles as part of the first US strikes in Nigeria launched on Christmas Day were not the intended target, according to a statement from the Nigerian government.

On Friday, Nigeria’s Information Minister Mohammed Idris said the strikes , which were launched by a US warship in the Gulf of Guinea, targeted “two major Islamic State (ISIS) terrorist enclaves” in the forests of the Tangaza district in Nigeria’s northwest Sokoto State, an area that’s not known as a hub for ISIS-affiliated militants, raising questions about why it was the US’s first target.

Idris also said that debris from US missiles landed in the village of Jabo in Sokoto, as well as Offa, a village in the central western Kwara state, hundreds of miles from Sokoto. Idris downplayed the damage to the villages, saying there were no civilian casualties, but residents of Offa say several homes were destroyed by the US missile, and some injuries were reported.

“At first, we were confused about what happened,” Benji Omale, a resident of Offa, told News Central TV , describing the loud sound he heard when a munition landed on the village. “So, we ran toward the area to find out. When we got there, we saw that several houses had been destroyed and many properties damaged.”

Omale added that the residents of the village are now “appealing to the government to take steps to address the destruction and provide some form of assistance.” Reports based on images of debris posted on social media suggest that at least three Tomahawk missiles fired by the US warship fell short of their target.

Catholic Bishop In Nigerian State Hit By US Missile Strikes Opposes Bombing | December 28, 2025

The top Catholic official in the Nigerian state that was targeted by US missiles on Christmas has come out against the US strikes, according to a report from OSV News .

“Violence cannot defeat violence,” said Bishop Matthew Hassan Kukah, the head of the Diocese of Sokoto in northwestern Nigeria. He added that Christianity has survived oppression through resilience, not force, saying, “Let us heed those solemn words of Jesus to Peter: Put your sword back in its place.”

Kukah has previously criticized the narrative from the Trump administration that a Christian “genocide” is taking place in Nigeria, while also urging an end to the violence. “The genocide stuff has been escalated by the Trump administration,” Kukah told The Crux earlier this month .

“This is what they used to muscle their way in, but I no longer want to be dragged into this. It is a distraction. My position is simple: By whatever name, stop the killings,” the bishop added.

During a speech at the Vatican in October, Kukah noted that he could travel and celebrate Mass freely in Sokoto, a predominantly Muslim state. “If we were dealing with outright persecution of Christians on grounds of identity, both myself and my small flock would not exist,” he said...

Back in October, Massad Boulos, President Trump’s envoy for Arab and African affairs, a Lebanese-born Christian who has lived in Nigeria, met with Nigerian President Bola Tinubu and said that ISIS and Boko Haram kill more Muslims than Christians since they operate in predominantly Muslim areas. Last week, five Muslims were killed in a suicide attack in a mosque in Maiduguri, the capital of Nigeria’s northeastern Borno state.

Virginia To Enforce Verification Law For Social Media On January 1, 2026, Despite Free Speech Concerns

Virginia’s push to police teen screen time edges the internet closer to an era where every click comes with an ID check.

Virginia is preparing to enforce a new online regulation that will curtail how minors access social media, setting up a direct clash between state lawmakers and advocates for digital free expression.

Beginning January 1, 2026, a law known as Senate Bill 854 will compel social media companies to confirm the ages of all users through “commercially reasonable methods” and to restrict anyone under sixteen to one hour of use per platform per day.

Parents will have the option to override those limits through what the statute calls “verifiable parental consent.”

The measure is written into the state’s Consumer Data Protection Act, and it bars companies from using any information gathered for age checks for any other purpose.

Lawmakers from both parties rallied behind the bill, portraying it as a way to reduce what they described as addictive and harmful online habits among young people.

Delegate Wendell Walker argued that social media “is almost like a drug addiction,” while Delegate Sam Rasoul said that “people are concerned about the addiction of screen time” and accused companies of building algorithms that “keep us more and more addicted.”

Enforcement authority falls to the Office of the Attorney General, which may seek injunctions or impose civil fines reaching $7,500 per violation for noncompliance.

But this policy, framed as a health measure, has triggered strong constitutional objections from the technology industry and free speech advocates.

Trump Says He’ll Support An Israeli Attack On Iran If Tehran ‘Continues’ Its Missile Program

The president made the comments while meeting with Netanyahu in Florida

President Trump said on Monday that he would support an Israeli attack on Iran if Tehran “continues” its conventional missile program or if it works to rebuild its civilian nuclear program that was damaged by US airstrikes during the US-Israeli war on the Islamic Republic in June.

The president made the comments at his Mar-a-Lago resort in Florida before a meeting with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, when asked if he would back more Israeli attacks on Iran. “If they continue with the missiles, yes. The nuclear, fast,” he said.

“One will be yes, absolutely,” he added, appearing to reference Iran’s missiles. “The other was we’ll do it immediately,” he said, referencing the possibility of Iran rebuilding its nuclear program. The president also threatened to “knock the hell” out of Iran if it “builds up again.”

According to media reports, Netanyahu was expected to ask Trump to support a new war against Iran over concerns related to its ballistic missiles. Iranian officials have been clear that they won’t agree to a deal to curb Tehran’s missile program since it’s the only deterrent the country has against the US and Israel.

After the meeting, Trump and Netanyahu held a joint press conference where the US president again expressed support for the idea of another attack on Iran, though he suggested it wasn’t “confirmed” that Tehran was “building up” again.
