Joshua Schulte, who was convicted of orchestrating the largest leak of classified material in CIA history, was sentenced to 40 years in prison Thursday (Feb 1).
Schulte, 35, handed WikiLeaks a trove of CIA cyber espionage tools known as Vault 7. He was convicted in July 2022 of illegally handling classified information and obstruction of justice after an earlier trial had ended in a hung jury.
WikiLeaks began publishing the classified data from the stolen CIA files, the first of 26 disclosures, on March 7, 2017.
The trove of information revealed that the CIA had hacked smartphones in spying operations, and revealed the spy agency's efforts to turn internet-connected televisions into listening devices, according to The Associated Press.

ICJ Rules Against Ukraine on Terrorism, MH17
The World Court ruled on Wednesday (Jan 31) that Russia did not finance terrorism in its defense of separatists in Ukraine and the court refused to find Russia guilty of downing Malaysian Airlines Flight 17 as Ukraine had asked.
The case was brought to the ICJ by Ukraine in 2017, three years after the U.S.-backed coup in Kiev overthrew the democratically-elected President Viktor Yanukovych.
When Russian speakers in Donbass rebelled against the unconstitutional change in government that they had voted for, the coup leaders in 2014 launched what it called an “anti-terrorist” military operation to put down the rebellion.
Russia responded by helping ethnic Russians with arms and other military equipment. Ukraine claimed to the court that that was in breach of a treaty barring terrorism financing.
But the ICJ ruled on Wednesday that the treaty only covered cash transfers made to alleged terrorist groups. This “does not include the means used to commit acts of terrorism, including weapons or training camps,” the Court said in its judgement.
“Consequently, the alleged supply of weapons to various armed groups operating in Ukraine… fall outside the material scope” of the anti-terrorism financing convention, the Court ruled. The Court also said it had no evidence to show that any of the armed militias in Donbass fighting against the government could be characterized as terrorist groups.

NIH Abruptly Halts All Future Research on the Harms of Cell Phone Radiation
In a shocking reversal, the National Toxicology Program (NTP) of the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences has quietly disclosed that it will stop studying the biological or environmental impacts of cell phone radiofrequency radiation.
This decision comes despite results from the program’s carefully engineered and reviewed decade-long $30 million animal studies that found cancer, heart damage and DNA damage associated with exposure to cell phone radiofrequency radiation at levels comparable to those experienced by Americans today.
The sudden end of civilian government efforts to study potential health impacts of wireless radiation constitutes a glaring abdication of responsibility. In contrast, the U.S. Department of Defense continues to study this problem.
The European Union is providing multi-million dollar grants for multidisciplinary studies. The French government regularly monitors towers and phones and has recalled millions of phones for excessive radiation or other concerns, reflecting public concerns about both psychological and physiological impacts.

Biden Issues Sanctions on Israeli Settlers That Attack Palestinians in West Bank
US President Joe Biden issued an executive order on Thursday (Feb 1) that imposes targeted sanctions on Israeli settlers who attack Palestinians in the occupied West Bank.
Based on the order, the administration will also specifically sanction four Israeli settlers who engaged in violent activity against Palestinians, including an incident where settlers set fire to cars in an attack that killed one Palestinian civilian.
In a press call with reporters on Thursday, a senior US official said the move is being taken to curb the surge in violence in the occupied West Bank since the war in Gaza began on 7 October.
"All property and interest in property in the United States of those individuals will be blocked," one US official said during the call. The official added that the executive order will also bar Americans from "making any contribution or provision of funds" to the sanctioned individuals.

Hotez does not offer many specifics for what he wants these agencies to do or what his aforementioned “political solutions” might look like. However, censoring or prosecuting people who commit acts of anti-science aggression would seem like a reasonable assumption. The former has become commonplace on social media, and the latter is a tactic that has been called for by the American Medical Association in efforts to silence critics of doctors providing 'gender-affirming' care to children.

Plans to bomb Iranian personnel in Iraq and Syria have been approved anyway
Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin on Thursday admitted the US does not know if Iran was operationally involved in the drone attack in Jordan that killed three American soldiers. On the same day, US officials told CBS News that plans have been approved for strikes against Iranian personnel and facilities in Iraq and Syria.
When asked by a reporter how much Iran knew about the Jordan drone attack or if it was operationally involved, Austin said, “You know, we believe that this was done by an element of what is known as the Axis of Resistance, and these are Iranian proxy groups. And how much Iran knew or didn’t know, we — we don’t know, but it really doesn’t matter because Iran sponsors these groups.”

President Joe Biden ordered strikes on the IRGC and Shia militias in response to the killing of three US soldiers in Jordan last week
The White House started its military operations against Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps (IRGC) Quds Force and Shia militias in Iraq and Syria on Friday. The Biden administration pledged to strike Iranian targets in the Middle East after three US soldiers were killed by a drone attack in Jordan last week. The White House signaled that the campaign against Iran and Shia militias will involve several rounds of strikes.
US Central Command (CENTCOM) reported its forces dropped over 100 bombs on 85 targets. “CENTCOM forces conducted airstrikes in Iraq and Syria against Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps (IRGC) Quds Force and affiliated militia groups,” according to the statement posted on X. “US military forces struck more than 85 targets, with numerous aircraft to include long-range bombers flown from United States. The airstrikes employed more than 125 precision munitions.”
Earlier this week, the Biden administration leaked to the media that it planned to conduct strikes on Iranian military targets outside of Iran and that the operations would take place in several waves of strikes.
CENTCOM claims the targets were hit in response to attacks on US soldiers in Iraq and Syria.
