🚨🚨FBI Tied January 6 Pipe Bomber To Metro Card Of Ex-Gov Official, But Blocked Interview Of Him, Former Agent Says

A former FBI agent said that the Bureau quickly believed that it tied the person who planted pipe bombs at the Democrat National Committee and the Republican National Committee to a particular Metro fare card and license plate, but did not allow him to interview the person of interest and pulled his team off of the lead.

The allegation raises more questions about the pipe bombs, which were by far the most violent aspect of the January 6 protests, but which Democrats and authorities have seldom mentioned since.

Kyle Seraphin, who led FBI surveillance teams, told The Daily Wire that shortly after January 6, a counterintelligence team met him at a firehouse in Falls Church, Virginia to brief him on his next surveillance target: They had used security footage to follow the person into a Metro station after he planted the bombs, and identified the fare card that was used.

That fare card then allowed them to determine that the person got off at a Metro stop in Northern Virginia, where surveillance footage showed the person entering a car. Both the car and the fare card were in the name of the same person — a retired Air Force chief master sergeant who was now working as a contractor with a security clearance, they said.

Seraphin and his team were assigned to stake out the person’s row house for days, but the FBI blocked his request to interview the person, he said. Then they were called off the target completely and told to pore through low-priority leads about minor January 6 participants, he said.

The creator of ChatGPT has updated its policy statement, enabling it to start defense work

Less than a week after OpenAI made it easier for its chatbot technology to be used in military applications by deleting language out of its usage policy, the creator of ChatGPT announced its first partnership with the Pentagon.

The previous usage policy banned ChatGPT users from activities like “weapons development” and “military and warfare.” On Jan. 10, OpenAI updated the page that users must comply with. It now says its chatbot tech cannot be used to “harm yourself or others.” The page lists “develop or use weapons” as an example of a way that ChatGPT cannot be used. Military uses and warfare are no longer listed.

Anna Makanju, OpenAI's vice president of global affairs, said on Tuesday at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, that the company is already working with the Pentagon on open-source cybersecurity software and is in discussions about how it could assist with preventing veteran suicide.

The change, first reported by The Intercept, sets the artificial intelligence pioneer up to go after lucrative military contracts. Microsoft, which has a partnership with OpenAI that is reportedly worth $13 billion, works closely with the Pentagon on multiple projects, including a multi-year cloud contract worth $9 billion that is split between Microsoft, Google, Amazon and Oracle.

DW: EU Elections a 'Prime Target' for Disinformation

Top EU diplomat Josep Borrell issued a stark warning about misleading information spread from abroad. But much disinformation — be it on Ukraine, the climate or migrants — comes from EU politicians themselves.

With a bumper year for elections worldwide, including June polls for the European Parliament, European Union officials tasked with monitoring disinformation are on high alert.

A dedicated EU task force investigated 750 incidents of deliberately misleading information being spread by foreign actors last year, published in a new report. As in previous years, Russia was the primary source, "trying to justify its war of aggression against Ukraine," the authors of the European Union External Action Service (EEAS) document wrote.

...Presenting the findings, EU top diplomat Josep Borrell, a frequent target himself for disinformation, according to the report, described it as one of the biggest security threats of our times. "[It] is not about not about a bomb that can kill you. It's about a poison that can colonize your mind," Borrell said Tuesday evening in Brussels.

Several Arab states have re-embraced Syria after years of failed regime-change efforts

Hassan Ahmad al-Shehhi, UAE ambassador to Syria, arrived in the country’s capital, Damascus, on 30 January, marking the first visit of an Emirati envoy to the war-torn nation since 2011...

Shehhi had previously been the Emirati envoy to Iraq since 2015. Before that, he was the UAE ambassador to Sudan.

Damascus and Abu Dhabi restored diplomatic relations in 2018 following seven years of severed ties.

Syria-UAE relations deteriorated after the wealthy Gulf nation’s support for the US-led regime change war on Syria, which started in 2011.

Half Of US Tenants Can’t Afford To Pay Their Rent. Here’s What’s Ahead

Half of renters in the United States have found themselves paying more than they can afford, following years of surging rents. But an increase in the construction of multiple-unit buildings has boosted the supply of apartments, which is slowly beginning to rein in runaway rents.

Nationally, rents declined annually in December for the eighth straight month, according to Realtor.com’s monthly report. The median asking rent was $1,713, which was down $4 from November and down $63 from the July 2022 peak.

However, median rent is still $309 higher than the same time in 2019, before the pandemic. That’s a 22% increase.

And people have been feeling it. In some places, rents aren’t dropping at all. Rent is just increasing at a slower pace.

Imran Khan Barred From Public Office After Back-to-back Convictions

The 'hurried' verdict was delivered in absentia as officials from Khan's party condemned the rampant use of lawfare against Pakistan's most popular political figure

The accountability court in Rawalpindi on 31 January sentenced former Prime Minister of Pakistan Imran Khan and his wife, Bushra Bibi, in absentia to 14 years in jail in a case related to the alleged selling of state gifts.

This is Khan's second conviction over the past two days and the third since he was ousted from office in a US-backed legislative coup in 2022.

According to Wednesday's verdict, Khan and his wife are barred from holding any public post for 10 years and must pay a fine of 757 million rupees ($2.7m) each.

Khan's Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party blasted the court's decision, calling it a “kangaroo trial” and that the conviction represented the “complete destruction of every existing law in Pakistan.”

American Troops Put on Standby for Potential U.S. Ground Involvement in Gaza

US Air Force personnel in Iraq received a memo in January ordering them to be on standby to support potential US ground involvement in Gaza, The Intercept reported on Tuesday (Jan 30).

The memo contained orders for the airmen to be placed “on standby to forward deploy to support troops in the case of on ground US involvement in the Israel Hamas war.” A separate personnel document also obtained by The Intercept showed the order was meant for personnel deployed to Iraq last year.

The revelation of the memo comes as the situation in the Middle East continues to escalate. President Biden could potentially target the Iranian military in the wake of a drone attack in Jordan that killed three US troops even though the Pentagon admitted it has no evidence Tehran was directly involved.

The US has also continued to bomb the Houthis in Yemen, and Israel is threatening total war with Lebanon. The memo suggests that the US might be planning to get involved in ground operations in Gaza if the region does explode into a full-blown war that involves the US and Iran.
