President Trump agreed to reduce tariffs on Chinese goods by 10 percent following his meeting with Xi in South Korea
Chinese President Xi Jinping agreed on 29 October to delay restrictions on rare earth metal exports to the US in exchange for a reduction in tariffs during his meeting with US President Donald Trump in South Korea.
After the meeting, President Xi said Washington and Beijing would work to finalize their agreements to provide “peace of mind” to both countries and the rest of the world.
“Both sides should take the long-term perspective into account, focusing on the benefits of cooperation rather than falling into a vicious cycle of mutual retaliation,” he said.

An Israeli district court has allowed police to keep the phones of Yonatan Urich, a close aide to Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, as part of the so-called Qatargate affair. The ruling reverses a lower court's decision earlier this week that ordered the devices returned, saying police had not properly justified holding them.
The Qatargate affair centers on suspicions that Urich and another Netanyahu aide, Eli Feldstein, maintained improper ties with Qatari intermediaries.
The district court's decision overturns a ruling issued Sunday by Magistrate Judge Menachem Mizrahi, who had rejected a police request to continue holding the devices as part of the investigation, arguing that the police had failed to submit a confidential report detailing the probe's progress.
In response to the police appeal, District Court Judge Yaakov Spasser sent the case back to the Magistrate's Court, ruling that there was no requirement to submit such a document. Spasser said that Mizrahi had "erred in his handling of the matter" and that he "was not authorized to refrain from discussing the request on its merits."
Spasser added that if the lower court had believed a confidential report was necessary, it could have asked police to prepare one, "even at the cost of a brief postponement of the hearing." He clarified that submitting such a report in proceedings of this kind is customary but not mandatory, unlike in detention hearings or cases involving restrictions on a suspect's liberty.
"As there is no dispute that the request was not, in fact, examined on its merits, the appeal is accepted and the case is returned to the lower court, which shall hold a substantive hearing on the matter and issue its decision in accordance with its judgment and discretion," Spasser ruled.
Police representatives told the court they wanted to keep the devices until a hacking software update was released because they had been unable to access them so far. "Hacking and extracting information from two of the devices have failed. As for the third, we were told the model is unhackable, so we didn't try," they said.
Judge Menachem Mizrahi dismissed the request, calling it the easiest decision he had ever made. At the police's request, he stayed the ruling for 48 hours to allow them to appeal to the District Court.
Sunday's hearing followed last month's police request to extend the seizure of phones belonging to several individuals involved in the Qatargate affair, including businessmen David Saig and Gil Birger. The two agreed to an additional 180-day extension, but Urich refused.

Israel has also escalated its violent raids in the occupied West Bank, coinciding with a surge in settler attacks on Palestinians
Close to 1,000 new barriers have been set up by the Israeli military in the occupied West Bank since the start of the genocide in Gaza two years ago, according to a Palestinian government body called the Wall and Settlement Resistance Commission.
The commission said 916 gates, barriers, and walls have been erected across the territory since 7 October 2023.
Many of these barriers are metal gates, sometimes manned by Israeli soldiers, which are put up at many town and village entrances, as well as between West Bank cities.
The military uses these barriers to control the movement of Palestinians and prevent people from entering or exiting certain areas.
The UN said last month that it documented the establishment of 18 new gates in the occupied West Bank.

Israel has also escalated its violent raids in the occupied West Bank, coinciding with a surge in settler attacks on Palestinians
Close to 1,000 new barriers have been set up by the Israeli military in the occupied West Bank since the start of the genocide in Gaza two years ago, according to a Palestinian government body called the Wall and Settlement Resistance Commission.
The commission said 916 gates, barriers, and walls have been erected across the territory since 7 October 2023.
Many of these barriers are metal gates, sometimes manned by Israeli soldiers, which are put up at many town and village entrances, as well as between West Bank cities.
The military uses these barriers to control the movement of Palestinians and prevent people from entering or exiting certain areas.
The UN said last month that it documented the establishment of 18 new gates in the occupied West Bank.

Pentagon Tells Congress It Doesn’t Know Who It’s Killing In Latin American Boat Strikes
US War Department officials don’t know the identities of the 61 people who have been extra-judicially executed in US military strikes on boats in the waters near Venezuela and in the Eastern Pacific Ocean, POLITICO reported on Thursday , citing House Democrats who attended a classified briefing on the campaign.
“[The department officials] said that they do not need to positively identify individuals on these vessels to do the strikes, they just need to prove a connection to smuggling,” said Rep. Sara Jacobs (D-CA). “When we tried to get more information, we did not get satisfactory answers.”
While the Trump administration has cited overdose deaths in the US related to fentanyl to justify the bombing campaign, lawmakers were told in the briefing that the boats that have been targeted were allegedly smuggling cocaine, though the Pentagon has not provided evidence to back up its claims..
“They argued that cocaine is a facilitating drug of fentanyl, but that was not a satisfactory answer for most of us,” Jacobs said.
The briefing on Thursday came after the Pentagon shut out Democrats from another briefing it held with Republicans a day earlier..

Russia Warns Of Tit-For-Tat Response If Washington Breaks Nuclear Moratorium
Trump has ordered the US Department of War to resume nuclear tests for the first time in over 30 years
Russia will respond “accordingly” if the US violates a moratorium on testing nuclear weapons, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told journalists on 30 October.
Russian President Vladimir Putin has stated many times that “if someone abandons the moratorium [on nuclear testing], then Russia will act accordingly,” Peskov stated.
His comments came after US President Donald Trump ordered the Department of War on Wednesday to resume nuclear weapons testing, claiming that “other countries” are carrying out nuclear tests.
“That process will begin immediately,” Trump said.
The US has not tested nuclear weapons since 1992, following legislation passed by Congress. Russia has not tested a nuclear weapon since 1990, before the fall of the Soviet Union.

Southern Syria: Where Israel Redraws The Levant Through Water And Gas
Behind Israel’s military push in southern Syria lies an effort to command the region’s lifelines – its water and gas – and with them, its future influence.
Since the fall of former Syrian president Bashar al-Assad's government, Israeli incursions into Syria have expanded steadily. Tel Aviv now controls strategic high points, including Jabal al-Sheikh (Mount Hermon), which stands at 2,814 meters and overlooks Syria, Iraq, Jordan, Lebanon, and occupied Palestine.
From this vantage, Israel can monitor air activity stretching from Gibraltar to Syria, a capability enhanced by advanced surveillance systems.
In Quneitra Governorate, Israel has entrenched itself across nearly the entire area, establishing multiple checkpoints and fortified positions. Its forces have even advanced into the Damascus countryside, reaching as far as the dissolved 78th Brigade – just five kilometres from Qatna and 20 from central Damascus.
Israeli positions now extend to Rakhla, opposite the Lebanese town of Yahmar. Rakhla is a strategic point that rises 1,500 meters and overlooks three vital roads linking Damascus to Baalbek and Beirut, as well as overlooking the Lebanese Bekaa Valley, and is about 30 kilometers from the Masnaa crossing – the main road between Damascus and Beirut.
Further east, Suwayda province has effectively slipped from Damascus’s authority. Following Israel’s declared “protection” of the Druze community – reiterated by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and other officials – local factions have formed a 3,000-strong “National Guard” under unified command, reportedly funded directly by Israel, according to Reuters.
While these territorial gains are often discussed through a security lens, their implications go far beyond the battlefield. Israel’s control over geography is increasingly intertwined with control over resources – particularly water and gas – two commodities that define power and survival in the Levant.
Water and gas as instruments of power
Tel Aviv’s recent advances have turned southern Syria into a theater where resource competition is reshaping regional politics. Beyond military encroachment, Israel’s ambition lies in dominating the Yarmouk Basin – an essential water reservoir feeding Syria, Jordan, and occupied Palestine.
Its integration into Israel’s existing water grid, stretching from the Galilee to the desert, would mark a significant expansion of Israeli hydro-hegemony.
Yet water is only part of the story. Southern Syria also sits at the crossroads of energy ambitions. Israel seeks to obstruct any future route of the long-proposed Qatari–Turkish gas pipeline that would pass through Syria on its way to Europe – an alternative that could undermine Israel’s EastMed gas export corridor.
