Tennessee Man Jailed Over Facebook Meme Has Charges Dropped After Outcry
A Facebook meme turned into a felony case.
A retired police officer from rural Tennessee spent more than a month behind bars over a Facebook post that authorities said hinted at school violence, a charge now thrown out, but one that has raised new concerns about criminalizing speech online.
Larry Bushart, 61, a longtime resident of Perry County and a familiar face in local Facebook debates, was arrested in late September after sharing a meme that officials said some interpreted as a threat.
The post appeared in a community group following the assassination of conservative activist Charlie Kirk.
The meme that landed Bushart in trouble was not new. It featured an image of President Donald Trump and the words “We have to get over it,” referencing his comment after a school shooting in Perry, Iowa, last year.
Beneath the image, and lacking the context, a caption read, “Donald Trump, on the Perry High School mass shooting, one day after.”
Bushart had added only a brief remark: “This seems relevant today…”
According to Perry County Sheriff Nick Weems, some residents saw the post and believed it referred to their own Perry County High School.
Channel 5 News pressed Sheriff Nick Weems on the origins of the meme that led to Bushart’s arrest.
The image, which referenced a school shooting in Perry, Iowa, had circulated widely online before Bushart shared it.
“It says ‘Perry High School mass shooting one day after,’ ok? That led people to believe in our county that he’s talking about Perry County High School – because it doesn’t say ‘Iowa’ either,” Weems explained.
When reporters pointed out that the meme was already known to be an existing post from the internet, Weems acknowledged, “Correct.”
“So it’s clear that he’s not talking about Perry County High School,” the reporter pressed.
“We knew,” the sheriff admitted. “The public did not know.”
Weems said calls poured into his office, and when Bushart declined to delete the meme, he was charged with recklessly threatening mass violence, a felony that carried the potential for years in prison.
Body camera footage captured the moment Bushart was taken into custody. “I’ve been in Facebook jail,” he told an officer with disbelief. “But I’m really in it now.”
His bail was set at an extraordinary $2 million. For over four weeks, he remained locked up as local officials insisted that the post crossed a legal line.

Netanyahu told the graduating class of Israeli military cadets that Israel has “more work” to do in Gaza. “At the end of the day, Hamas will be disarmed and Gaza will be demilitarized,” he said. “If foreign troops do it, great. If they don’t do it, we will.”
Netanyahu and other Israeli officials have made clear that they’re eager to restart Israel’s full-blown genocidal military campaign in the Gaza Strip, and Israel has repeatedly violated the ceasefire deal by launching attacks in Gaza, which have killed over 200 Palestinians since the truce began.
The Israeli leader’s comments come as the US is involved in negotiations for an international force to enter Gaza. The idea is for foreign troops to take the place of IDF soldiers inside Gaza.
Israel has strongly objected to the idea of a Turkish presence in Gaza, but according to a report from Axios , the US is pushing for Turkey to be involved. The report said Azerbaijan, Egypt, and Indonesia have shown a willingness to send troops, but there are concerns about the possibility of clashing with Hamas. The US plan also involves establishing a Palestinian police force trained and vetted by the US, Egypt, and Jordan.

Majority Of Palestinians Oppose Hamas Disarmament, Say Trump's 'Peace Plan' Unlikely To End War: Poll
The poll notes that the last two years have 'led to greater support' for Hamas, particularly in the occupied West Bank
A majority of Palestinians oppose the disarmament of Hamas and are skeptical of US President Donald Trump’s “peace plan” for Gaza, according to a new poll conducted by the Palestinian Center for Policy and Survey Research (PCPSR).
The PCPSR poll was carried out between 22 and 25 October.
It reveals that around 70 percent of Palestinians in the occupied West Bank and Gaza oppose the surrender of Hamas’s weapons, even if that means a renewal of Israeli attacks.
Opposition to disarmament is strongest in the occupied West Bank. Eighty percent of Palestinian respondents in the occupied territory believe the Hamas's military wing, the Qassam Brigades, should remain armed.
In Gaza, 55 percent said they opposed disarmament.

The poll notes that the last two years have 'led to greater support' for Hamas, particularly in the occupied West Bank
A majority of Palestinians oppose the disarmament of Hamas and are skeptical of US President Donald Trump’s “peace plan” for Gaza, according to a new poll conducted by the Palestinian Center for Policy and Survey Research (PCPSR).
The PCPSR poll was carried out between 22 and 25 October.
It reveals that around 70 percent of Palestinians in the occupied West Bank and Gaza oppose the surrender of Hamas’s weapons, even if that means a renewal of Israeli attacks.
Opposition to disarmament is strongest in the occupied West Bank. Eighty percent of Palestinian respondents in the occupied territory believe the Hamas's military wing, the Qassam Brigades, should remain armed.
In Gaza, 55 percent said they opposed disarmament.

So far, the outrage in the Israeli political class and society is not due to the fact that IDF soldiers sexually assault prisoners, but rather the fact that a video of them doing so has leaked.
High-profile cases of rape, including the rape of children, are prevalent in Israel. In June, there was a scandal involving top rabbis and Knesset members who had engaged in the sexual abuse of children.
In 2011, a study revealed that 61% of Israeli men do not consider forced sex with an acquaintance to be rape.
A few years ago, it was reported that out of 654 Thai foreign workers in Israel who were questioned, every single one, meaning 100% of them, reported that they had been sexually abused by Israelis.

President Trump agreed to reduce tariffs on Chinese goods by 10 percent following his meeting with Xi in South Korea
Chinese President Xi Jinping agreed on 29 October to delay restrictions on rare earth metal exports to the US in exchange for a reduction in tariffs during his meeting with US President Donald Trump in South Korea.
After the meeting, President Xi said Washington and Beijing would work to finalize their agreements to provide “peace of mind” to both countries and the rest of the world.
“Both sides should take the long-term perspective into account, focusing on the benefits of cooperation rather than falling into a vicious cycle of mutual retaliation,” he said.

An Israeli district court has allowed police to keep the phones of Yonatan Urich, a close aide to Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, as part of the so-called Qatargate affair. The ruling reverses a lower court's decision earlier this week that ordered the devices returned, saying police had not properly justified holding them.
The Qatargate affair centers on suspicions that Urich and another Netanyahu aide, Eli Feldstein, maintained improper ties with Qatari intermediaries.
The district court's decision overturns a ruling issued Sunday by Magistrate Judge Menachem Mizrahi, who had rejected a police request to continue holding the devices as part of the investigation, arguing that the police had failed to submit a confidential report detailing the probe's progress.
In response to the police appeal, District Court Judge Yaakov Spasser sent the case back to the Magistrate's Court, ruling that there was no requirement to submit such a document. Spasser said that Mizrahi had "erred in his handling of the matter" and that he "was not authorized to refrain from discussing the request on its merits."
Spasser added that if the lower court had believed a confidential report was necessary, it could have asked police to prepare one, "even at the cost of a brief postponement of the hearing." He clarified that submitting such a report in proceedings of this kind is customary but not mandatory, unlike in detention hearings or cases involving restrictions on a suspect's liberty.
"As there is no dispute that the request was not, in fact, examined on its merits, the appeal is accepted and the case is returned to the lower court, which shall hold a substantive hearing on the matter and issue its decision in accordance with its judgment and discretion," Spasser ruled.
Police representatives told the court they wanted to keep the devices until a hacking software update was released because they had been unable to access them so far. "Hacking and extracting information from two of the devices have failed. As for the third, we were told the model is unhackable, so we didn't try," they said.
Judge Menachem Mizrahi dismissed the request, calling it the easiest decision he had ever made. At the police's request, he stayed the ruling for 48 hours to allow them to appeal to the District Court.
Sunday's hearing followed last month's police request to extend the seizure of phones belonging to several individuals involved in the Qatargate affair, including businessmen David Saig and Gil Birger. The two agreed to an additional 180-day extension, but Urich refused.

Israel has also escalated its violent raids in the occupied West Bank, coinciding with a surge in settler attacks on Palestinians
Close to 1,000 new barriers have been set up by the Israeli military in the occupied West Bank since the start of the genocide in Gaza two years ago, according to a Palestinian government body called the Wall and Settlement Resistance Commission.
The commission said 916 gates, barriers, and walls have been erected across the territory since 7 October 2023.
Many of these barriers are metal gates, sometimes manned by Israeli soldiers, which are put up at many town and village entrances, as well as between West Bank cities.
The military uses these barriers to control the movement of Palestinians and prevent people from entering or exiting certain areas.
The UN said last month that it documented the establishment of 18 new gates in the occupied West Bank.

US War Department officials don’t know the identities of the 61 people who have been extra-judicially executed in US military strikes on boats in the waters near Venezuela and in the Eastern Pacific Ocean, POLITICO reported on Thursday , citing House Democrats who attended a classified briefing on the campaign.
“[The department officials] said that they do not need to positively identify individuals on these vessels to do the strikes, they just need to prove a connection to smuggling,” said Rep. Sara Jacobs (D-CA). “When we tried to get more information, we did not get satisfactory answers.”
While the Trump administration has cited overdose deaths in the US related to fentanyl to justify the bombing campaign, lawmakers were told in the briefing that the boats that have been targeted were allegedly smuggling cocaine, though the Pentagon has not provided evidence to back up its claims..
“They argued that cocaine is a facilitating drug of fentanyl, but that was not a satisfactory answer for most of us,” Jacobs said.
The briefing on Thursday came after the Pentagon shut out Democrats from another briefing it held with Republicans a day earlier..
