US Axes Website For Reporting Human Rights Abuses By US-Armed Foreign Forces
The US State Department has removed an online portal for reporting alleged human rights violations by foreign military units supplied with American weapons.
The Human Rights Reporting Gateway (HRG) acted as a formal "tip line" to the US government.
It was the only publicly accessible channel of its kind for organisations or individuals to inform it directly of potentially serious abuses by US-armed foreign forces.
Its deletion has been condemned by human rights campaigners and by a senior congressional aide who drafted the law requiring it. The State Department insisted it was still abiding by the law.
The portal was established in 2022 following pressure on successive administrations to abide by updated provisions of the Leahy Law, named after former US Senator Patrick Leahy. These require the government to "facilitate receipt" of information on alleged gross violations of human rights by military units supplied by Washington.
Among the cases submitted via the HRG was the alleged excessive use of force by security forces during anti-government protests in Colombia, while several cases were due to be submitted relating to US-armed units of the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) in the occupied West Bank, according to Amnesty International.
Tim Rieser, former senior aide to Senator Leahy who wrote the 2011 amendment mandating information gathering, told the BBC the gateway's removal meant the State Department was "clearly ignoring the law".
He added it was a further sign that "the entire human rights architecture" within the department was being "rendered largely ineffective"...
Secretary of State Marco Rubio has overseen a sweeping reorganisation of the State Department involving widespread layoffs and eliminating some offices focused on human rights monitoring. The department this year released a slimmed-down annual human rights report which critics said omitted alleged crimes by US allies but included those by foreign leaders the Trump administration opposes.

Saudi Arabia already has sufficient hotel capacity to host the 2034 World Cup but is concentrating on expanding domestic hotel offerings and has not yet decided on investing in Egypt's Red Sea coast, the kingdom’s tourism minister said today.
Cairo has been planning a potential development of Ras Gamila, a mostly undeveloped coastal area near the Sharm el-Sheikh resort, following a large-scale investment by the United Arab Emirates along Egypt’s Mediterranean coast.
When asked about possible Saudi investment, Tourism Minister Ahmad al-Khateeb told the Fortune Global Forum in Riyadh that the kingdom is prioritizing new domestic projects, including the massive Red Sea Global development, which plans to open 17 new hotels by next May.
Khateeb noted that FIFA, soccer’s governing body, has confirmed that Saudi Arabia currently has enough hotel rooms to accommodate visitors expected for the 2034 World Cup.

The central Syrian city of Homs has become the epicenter of attacks on Alawites by extremists affiliated with Syria's new government
Sectarian killings and abductions targeting Syria’s Alawite religious minority continued this week, as the country continues to cope with the aftermath of the rise of former Al-Qaeda commander Ahmad al-Sharaa to power in Damascus.
On the evening of 24 October, unknown militants killed Raham Nizar Hamouda, a 32-year-old Alawite woman living in the Al-Waleed neighborhood of Homs City.
Hamouda, a teacher at the Sabea Rajoub School, was killed when the militants threw two grenades into her home. Her friend and colleague, Sara Muhammad Hamidoosh, was seriously injured by the shrapnel.
Hamouda’s husband, a former officer and engineer in the Syrian army, is currently detained in Hama Central Prison.
Earlier this month, on 7 October, another female teacher in Homs was killed when militants shot and killed her in front of her school in the Zahra neighborhood.

The UN’s Palestinian refugee agency UNRWA reports that the Gaza Strip is still being denied access by Israel for both its international personnel and humanitarian shipments, even as approximately 12,000 local staff continue providing healthcare, psychosocial support, and education under severely challenging conditions.
Israel had earlier banned UNRWA from operating in territory under its control, citing allegations that some of its employees were members of Hamas; a claim that the International Court of Justice (ICJ) found was not substantiated.

US Sanctions Colombia’s President Petro Amid Spat Over Boat Strikes
The sanctions also targeted Petro's wife, son, and Colombia's interior minister
The Trump administration announced on Friday that it was imposing sanctions on Colombian President Gustavo Petro amid a spat between the Colombian leader and President Trump over the US bombing campaign against boats in Latin America.
In a statement on the sanctions, US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent accused Petro of allowing “drug cartels to flourish” and refusing to stop the activity of the cartels, allegations the Colombian president denied.
“Fighting drug trafficking for decades — and doing so effectively — has brought me this measure from the government of the very society we helped so much to curb its cocaine consumption,” Petro said in response to the sanctions.
The US sanctions also targeted Petro’s eldest son, his wife, and Colombian Interior Minister Armando Benedetti, who also denied the allegations against him. Benedetti suggested he was targeted for defending Petro against US claims that he was involved in drug trafficking.
“In this country, no one buys the story that I am a drug trafficker,” Benedetti said. “For the US, a non-violent statement is the same as being a drug trafficker. Gringos go home.”

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio defended a deadly Israeli airstrike that hit Gaza over the weekend, saying Washington ‘does not view that as a violation’
The Health Ministry in Gaza said on 27 October that nearly 100 Palestinians have been killed by Israeli attacks since US President Donald Trump’s ceasefire plan went into effect.
According to the ministry’s daily statistical report, 93 people have been killed and 332 injured since 11 October.
The ministry added that it has so far recovered the bodies of 472 Palestinians killed during the war. “Victims are still under the rubble and on the streets, as ambulance and civil defense teams have been unable to reach them so far,” it said.
“So far, 72 out of 195 bodies released by the occupation have been identified,” the ministry added. Many of the Palestinian bodies handed over as part of the swap arrived in Gaza unrecognizable – either charred or decomposed. Numerous others arrived in cuffs, bearing signs of torture and execution.
Israel’s attacks on the Gaza Strip are ongoing, in stark violation of the ceasefire.

The episode, which unfolded outside Kenwood High School, has fueled public unease about the expanding use of AI surveillance in everyday settings.
Sixteen-year-old Taki Allen had just finished football practice on October 20 when several police cruisers raced toward him and his friends.
“It was like eight cop cars that came pulling up for us,” Allen told WBAL-TV 11 News. “They started walking toward me with guns, talking about ‘Get on the ground,’ and I was like, ‘What?’”
He said officers forced him to kneel, cuffed him, and searched his pockets. Only later did they show him the image that had prompted the confrontation: an AI-generated alert that had flagged a crumpled Doritos bag as a weapon.
“It was mainly like, am I gonna die? Are they going to kill me?” he said. “They showed me the picture, said that looks like a gun, I said, ‘No, it’s chips.’”
The technology behind the false alert was part of a gun detection program developed by Omnilert, which Baltimore County Public Schools adopted last year.
The system analyzes video feeds from school cameras and notifies police if it believes it has detected a gun.

As 24 October 2025 approached, anyone closely following politics in Turkiye was anxiously awaiting the court ruling in a case being heard in the capital, Ankara. That day, the court was expected to deliver a final verdict on whether to annul the 4–5 November 2023 congress of the main opposition party, the Republican People's Party (CHP).
The case seeking to annul the congress was brought by CHP members known to oppose both Ozgur Ozel, who won the party leadership at the congress, and Ekrem Imamoglu, the CHP’s jailed presidential candidate. But the consensus in opposition circles was that the case was politically motivated and orchestrated by the ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP) to weaken the CHP.
Indeed, under Turkiye’s laws, outcomes of party congresses confirmed by the Supreme Electoral Council (YSK) cannot be legally contested. Nevertheless, the AKP-controlled judiciary accepted the case and initiated proceedings, with ruling party officials publicly calling for the congress to be annulled.
But a year later, the balance of power had shifted, preventing any court decision that could remove the current CHP leadership. The party resisted effectively, and the ruling AKP was unwilling to risk the political and economic fallout of redesigning the CHP via the judiciary. Thus, this case came to a quiet close.

UNIFIL reported that the drone had flown over its patrol “in an aggressive manner,” prompting the force to take “necessary defensive countermeasures to neutralize the drone.”
Israel added that after the UAV was downed, another drone flew over the area and dropped a grenade. UNIFIL stated that the grenade landed near its patrol and that an Israeli tank also fired in the direction of its observers, describing the incident as a breach of a UN Security Council resolution and of Lebanese sovereignty.

The Neocons Have Finally Found A Way Into MAGA Hearts
“Neocon” may have become a dirty word, but after a few years, their agenda is back in play.
And no doubt many of their players, too.
After being banished to the wilderness for plunging the nation into a 20-year war, the neocons fell flat with the Trump base in Ukraine and lost the thread with MAGA in Israel . Venezuela and the Western Hemisphere are another matter. The neocons have evolved, and regime change is back on the menu.
How? Rather than pushing “democracy” and “freedom” like George W. Bush’s famous second inaugural speech at the height of the Iraq War, neoconservatives have adopted the prevailing MAGA/New Right language of “America First” to inject regime change back into fashion.
If you don’t think so, just listen to what Marco Rubio – once a reliable foot soldier for neoconservative foreign policy on Capitol Hill since his election to the Senate in 2011 – has to say about Nicolas Maduro today. He insists that Maduro is “not the President of Venezuela and his regime is not the legitimate government,” but a “corrupt, criminal and illegitimate (regime)” that undermines “America’s national security interests.”
Meanwhile, he calls Maduro an “enemy of humanity” who “has strangled democracy and grasped at power in Venezuela” and announced a $50 million bounty on his head. Since then, there has been a massive military buildup in the region and talk of bringing the lead narco terrorist to justice.
This hasn’t been lost on observers, even in conventional Right circles. “You thought I was joking when I said Trump was the greatest neoconservative president we’ve had in ages,” National Review’s Jim Geraghty exclaimed in a recent column.
Supporters of Trump say the president is still allergic to “regime change wars” and that the administration is only interested in short, sharp actions against drug cartels and Maduro. Yet Trump hasn’t fully denied that aspiration either. In fact, he teases a little about it every day. The President has even confirmed that he gave the CIA – who know a thing or two about assassinations and toppling governments – the authority to conduct covert operations in and around Venezuela.
If it walks like a duck, quacks like a duck, it’s a duck.
So what is different about today? Trump’s populist base elected him because he espoused a nationalism that promised a foreign policy focused on American interests and our own backyard: cracking down on illegal immigration and drugs being top priorities. Going after cartels fits neatly into a “return of the Monroe Doctrine” and “pivot back to the Western Hemisphere.”
“Both inside and out of the administration there are many MAGA-aligned thinkers who want a more regionalized strategy in place of a globalist or imperial American foreign policy. They tend to be for less engagement with the Middle East and Europe and more attention to the Western Hemisphere,” noted Modern Age editor Daniel McCarthy.
“Where that outlook intersects with neoconservatism is that the neocons have, of course, long wanted regime change and the promotion of liberal democracy in Latin America. Since there’s a fight on to define what the Monroe Doctrine means in the 21st century, the neocons have an advantage in that they already have a plan for Latin America and for Venezuela in particular.”

Israeli Weapons Firm Opens First UAE Branch
The company will produce and sell Israeli surveillance systems in the UAE under Israeli oversight
Israeli defense technology company Controp Precision Technologies Ltd. announced the establishment of its first subsidiary in the UAE, Maariv reported on 26 October.
The new branch, Controp Emirates Ltd., will operate from Abu Dhabi’s Free Trade Zone (ADGM) with full ownership retained by the Israeli parent company.
This move marks the first Israeli arms venture in the Gulf since the 2020 Abraham Accords, described by Maariv as an “unprecedented security and economic step.”
According to the Israeli outlet, the government approved the creation of the subsidiary following authorization from the Ministry of Defense.
The Defense Security commissioner reviewed the plan and introduced “strict oversight mechanisms” to prevent the transfer of sensitive military information to foreign parties.
The Abu Dhabi branch will manage sales, maintenance, technical support, and local manufacturing of Controp’s electro-optical systems used for surveillance, targeting, and reconnaissance.
The initial investment, estimated at $30 million, will be financed through Controp’s equity and owner loans.
The company stated that Controp Emirates would “enable improved service, shorter delivery times and stronger trust with local customers.”

Sudan’s RSF Storms El-Fasher After UAE Shuts Down Talks On City
Sudan’s paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) has stormed the North Darfur city of el-Fasher, prompting fears of widespread killings and abuses, hours after ceasefire negotiations in Washington collapsed.
There were hopes late last week that the US -sponsored talks could achieve some sort of breakthrough.
However, sources told Middle East Eye that the UAE , which is the RSF’s most significant patron, refused to address the situation in el-Fasher, which has been under siege for over 500 days.
On Sunday morning, RSF fighters entered the city, where around 260,000 people have been trapped, seizing an army base and causing the defences to collapse.
The RSF claims it is in control of the city, describing its capture as a “decisive turning point”, after the paramilitaries had lost significant ground to the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) in recent months.
So far, the SAF and its allied Joint Forces have not commented on the developments, despite videos emerging that purport to show the RSF detaining and lashing people in and around el-Fasher.
One video, which Middle East Eye was not able to independently verify, appeared to show fighters forcing some detained people to praise RSF leader Mohammed Hamdan Dagalo, commonly known as Hemedti, before opening fire on them.
Others, which MEE has also been unable to verify, seem to depict RSF fighters firing on fleeing civilians...
Contact with people in el-Fasher has become very difficult, with people in the city only able to communicate to the outside through Starlink over recent months.
However, MEE was able to reach military sources, local fighters and activists in the city’s pro-democracy Popular Resistance Committee, who said they are still fighting and that el-Fasher’s defenders made a tactical retreat from the Sixth Infantry garrison.
One of the fighters told MEE that the RSF attacked on Sunday with more ferocity than in any previous assault.
“Serious fighting has erupted in el-Fasher in the past few days, with all kinds of weapons used - both sides using drones especially,” said the fighter, who is not being identified for security reasons.

Sudan’s paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) has stormed the North Darfur city of el-Fasher, prompting fears of widespread killings and abuses, hours after ceasefire negotiations in Washington collapsed.
There were hopes late last week that the US -sponsored talks could achieve some sort of breakthrough.
However, sources told Middle East Eye that the UAE , which is the RSF’s most significant patron, refused to address the situation in el-Fasher, which has been under siege for over 500 days.
On Sunday morning, RSF fighters entered the city, where around 260,000 people have been trapped, seizing an army base and causing the defences to collapse.
The RSF claims it is in control of the city, describing its capture as a “decisive turning point”, after the paramilitaries had lost significant ground to the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) in recent months.
So far, the SAF and its allied Joint Forces have not commented on the developments, despite videos emerging that purport to show the RSF detaining and lashing people in and around el-Fasher.
One video, which Middle East Eye was not able to independently verify, appeared to show fighters forcing some detained people to praise RSF leader Mohammed Hamdan Dagalo, commonly known as Hemedti, before opening fire on them.
Others, which MEE has also been unable to verify, seem to depict RSF fighters firing on fleeing civilians...
Contact with people in el-Fasher has become very difficult, with people in the city only able to communicate to the outside through Starlink over recent months.
However, MEE was able to reach military sources, local fighters and activists in the city’s pro-democracy Popular Resistance Committee, who said they are still fighting and that el-Fasher’s defenders made a tactical retreat from the Sixth Infantry garrison.
One of the fighters told MEE that the RSF attacked on Sunday with more ferocity than in any previous assault.
“Serious fighting has erupted in el-Fasher in the past few days, with all kinds of weapons used - both sides using drones especially,” said the fighter, who is not being identified for security reasons.

ICE Arrests British Journalist Over Criticism Of Israel
Sami Hamdi was detained while on a speaking tour in the US after being accused of ‘Hamas links’ and ‘terror ties’ by a conservative activist
US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) arrested UK journalist and commentator Sami Hamdi, revoking his visa as he was carrying out a speaking tour across the country.
“Under President Trump, those who support terrorism and undermine American national security will not be allowed to work or visit this country,” said a spokesperson for the Department of Homeland Security.
Hamdi had spoken at a Gala for the Council on American Islamic Relations (CAIR) in Sacramento, California, over the weekend. He was also due for a speech at a CAIR event in Florida on 26 October.
The British commentator was arrested at San Francisco International Airport. According to CAIR, his arrest is directly tied to his criticism of Israel and support for Palestinian human rights.
“Abducting a prominent British Muslim journalist and political commentator on a speaking tour in the United States because he dared to criticize the Israeli government’s genocide is a blatant affront to free speech,” CAIR said.
It also said Hamdi’s arrest came “at the urging of notorious anti-Muslim, pro-Israel extremist” Laura Loomer.
CAIR added that its lawyers were working to “address this injustice,” demanding an end to the abduction of Israel’s critics at the “behest of unhinged Israel First bigots.”
Loomer, a conservative journalist and pro-MAGA, pro-Israel activist, confirmed that Hamdi’s detention was carried out in response to her demands.
“CAIR has been identified in federal proceedings as having historical financial and organizational ties to Hamas – a designated foreign Islamic terrorist organization – and the Muslim Brotherhood,” Loomer claimed.
“CAIR issued a press release criticizing my advocacy efforts to get Jihadist Sami Hamdi deported from the US,” she added. She called Hamdi a “vocal supporter of Hamas and the Muslim Brotherhood” who has “Islamic terror ties.”
“I demanded that federal authorities inside the Trump administration treat Hamdi as the major national security threat that he is,” she went on to say.
