Hamas Prepares 'Largest' Crackdown On Israeli-Backed Militias In Gaza: Report

Israeli-backed armed groups in Gaza have stolen aid, killed civilians, and collaborated with Israeli troops against the resistance

Hamas’s next crackdown on Israel-backed militias and gangs in Gaza is set to be “the largest yet,” a source from the strip's Interior Ministry told Mondoweiss on 21 October.

The resistance group has already been carrying out security operations against these gangs, killing and apprehending dozens in recent weeks.

According to the Interior Ministry source, this campaign is “expanding.” As a result, not a very large number of outlaws remain in the strip, the source said.

“The number of gang members collaborating with the occupation is small and does not exceed a few hundred throughout all of Gaza, [with the exception of] the militia led by Yasser Abu Shabab, which is based east of Rafah City. He relies on families close to him who live in the same area, and it is entirely under the protection of the occupation army,” the source went on to say.

“Our evidence demonstrates that these individuals are implicated in acts of sabotage, kidnappings, the execution of civilians, looting aid, offering armed cover for the occupation, and receiving logistical and financial support from the occupation,” another senior ministry source told the outlet.

Hamas Fears Israel Could Replicate ‘Lebanon Model’ In Gaza: Report

Israel has carried out scores of targeted killings in Lebanon since the ceasefire agreement was reached

Hamas has been concerned about Israel replicating the “Lebanon scenario” in the Gaza Strip by continuing to assassinate its members despite the ceasefire agreement, according to sources cited by Asharq al-Awsat on 22 October.

Sources close to Hamas told the newspaper that the resistance movement believes Israel may be trying to “recreate the Lebanese experience” and “replicate the Lebanon scenario,” following the assassination of several top resistance leaders in Gaza over the weekend.

“The assassinations carried out last Sunday confirm Israel’s intention to continue this pattern. It may use the issue of disarmament as a pretext to conduct future strikes inside Gaza, just as it has done in Lebanon,” one of the sources said.

The sources expressed confidence in Arab mediators, but warned that Hamas still lacks trust in the US, which “has often allowed Israel to pursue its plans.”

“The scenario unfolding in Lebanon could well be repeated in Gaza. That is why the movement’s leadership insisted throughout negotiations on a complete ceasefire, with clear guarantees from all mediators, including the US – guarantees that Hamas ultimately secured during the Sharm el-Sheikh talks,” the sources went on to say.

❗️UAE-backed Yemeni forces repel Al-Qaeda attack in Abyan

Yemeni forces in Abyan, affiliated with the Southern Transitional Council (STC), announced they repelled an Al-Qaeda attack that killed four of their soldiers and five militants.

Nasr Atif al-Mashoushi, commander of the First Support and Reinforcement Brigade, said: “Our forces managed to thwart a massive terrorist attack launched this morning by elements of the Al-Qaeda terrorist organization on the government complex in Al-Mahfad,” adding that four fighters were killed defending the site.

A medical source confirmed four soldiers were killed and 15 injured. Al-Qaeda fighters used two car bombs; the first was detonated near the main gate, while others tried to infiltrate. STC forces killed five suicide bombers wearing explosive belts.

The brigade is part of the UAE-backed STC, which calls for secession from northern Yemen. STC forces have been central in counterterrorism efforts in the south.

Founded in 2017, the STC is part of the Presidential Leadership Council (PLC), Yemen’s internationally recognized authority based in the south.

Al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula (AQAP) was formed in 2009 through the merger of Saudi and Yemeni branches, prior to the Saudi-led coalitions war on Yemen, which it launched against Ansarallah in 2015.

Vance Says Israeli Knesset Vote On West Bank Annexation Was A ‘Stupid Political Stunt’

Vice President JD Vance on Thursday criticized the Israeli Knesset vote that advanced a bill to annex the Israeli-occupied West Bank while he was visiting Israel, calling it a “stupid political stunt.”

The vote on Wednesday was a preliminary step , and the bill would need to be voted on three more times before it becomes law, something that’s not expected to happen. The vote was supported by some parties in the ruling government’s coalition, but it was opposed by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s Likud party, which called it a “stunt” meant to harm relations with the US.

Before departing Israel, Vance was asked about the vote and said he was told that it was a “political stunt, that it had no practical significance,” and was just symbolic. “If it was a political stunt, it was a very stupid political stunt, and I personally take some insult to it,” he said.

Vance said that the Trump administration opposes the Israeli annexation of the West Bank. “The West Bank is not gonna be annexed by Israel. The policy of the Trump administration is that the West Bank will not be annexed by Israel. That will continue to be our policy, and if people want to take symbolic votes, they can do that. But we certainly weren’t happy about it,” he said.

While the administration opposes annexation of the West Bank, US Ambassador to Israel Mike Huckabee has said the US won’t get in the way of the expansion of illegal Jewish settlements, which amount to de facto annexation, and US military aid continues to fuel the Israeli occupation of the Palestinian territory.

World Bank Reveals Price Tag Of Syria Reconstruction Exceeds $200Bn

The World Bank warns that its assessment is ‘subject to significant uncertainty,’ and that any future escalation in the country could amplify reconstruction costs

The World Bank announced in a new report released on 21 October that the reconstruction of Syria will cost $216 billion, revealing the massive impact on the country's economy and infrastructure as a result of nearly 14 years of war.

“Reconstruction costs are projected to range between $140 billion and $345 billion, with a conservative best estimate of $216 billion,” according to the World Bank’s Syria Physical Damage and Reconstruction assessment 2011–2024.

“Reconstruction costs include $75 billion for residential buildings, $59 billion for non-residential structures, and $82 billion for infrastructure. These estimates focus only on the reconstruction cost of the physical assets and do not cover the service restoration needs for sectoral functioning. Aleppo and the Damascus countryside require the most significant investments for reconstruction,” the new World Bank assessment reads.

It also notes “inflation” and “material scarcity,” which add to the cost of reconstruction.

“It is important to emphasize that the results of this assessment are subject to significant uncertainty. The security situation remains fluid as of August 2025, and this volatility could substantially influence provincial reconstruction costs, including potentially increasing required expenditures in the event of further security or political developments,” the World Bank added.

Judge Orders Tech CEOs To Testify In Case Using Algorithmic Design Rules As A New Avenue For Indirect Online Censorship Pressure

For the first time, design choices, not just direct speech, are being treated as moral acts in a court of law.

Three of the tech industry’s most recognizable leaders, Mark Zuckerberg of Meta, Evan Spiegel of Snap, and Adam Mosseri of Instagram, will be required to testify in court early next year.

The order came from Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Carolyn Kuhl, who ruled that their participation is essential in a lawsuit alleging that social media platforms were deliberately designed to harm young users’ mental health.

Attorneys for the companies had tried to prevent the CEOs from appearing, arguing that earlier depositions and other executive testimonies already provided sufficient information.

Judge Kuhl disagreed, stating, “The testimony of a CEO is uniquely relevant, as that officer’s knowledge of harms, and failure to take available steps to avoid such harms could establish negligence or ratification of negligent conduct.”

She also noted that their testimony would be “unique,” since the claims center on design features built to “be addictive” and “drive compulsive” use among minors.

Meta argued that compelling both Zuckerberg and Mosseri to testify would disrupt their ability to manage the business and “set a precedent” for future cases. Snap’s lawyers said the decision to call Spiegel to the stand was an “abuse of discretion.”

Judge Kuhl rejected both arguments, saying that those in charge must directly answer questions about their companies’ conduct instead of delegating that responsibility.

After the ruling, Meta declined to comment.
