Biden's Patience with Netanyahu 'Running Out'
The Israeli prime minister is able to ignore the US president's requests, despite being highly dependent on US funding, weapons, and diplomatic cover to wage a genocidal war in Gaza
President Biden and other senior US officials are "running out" of patience with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who continues to ignore US requests regarding the ongoing war in Gaza, Axios reported on 15 January.
"The situation sucks and we are stuck. The president's patience is running out," one US official told Axios.
"At every juncture, Netanyahu has given Biden the finger," US Senator Chris Van Hollen, who has been in close contact with US officials about the war, told Axios. "They are pleading with the Netanyahu coalition, but getting slapped in the face over and over again."
Since the beginning of Israel's war on Gaza over 100 days ago, President Biden and Secretary of State Antony Blinken have given Israel unlimited support in the form of weapons and diplomatic cover despite clear evidence Israel is engaging in genocide.
But according to four US officials with direct knowledge of the issue, US officials are increasingly upset that Netanyahu has ignored requests to transfer tax revenue to the Palestinian Authority (PA), allow humanitarian aid into Gaza, scale back military operations to stop killing so many Palestinian civilians, and allow the PA to govern Gaza following the end of the war.
According to Axios, Biden and Netanyahu have not spoken in almost a month, after previously speaking several times a week. During their last conversation on 23 December, Netanyahu refused a request to transfer PA tax revenue. In response, Biden said, "This conversation is over," and hung up the phone.
For now, Netanyahu appears "more willing to listen" to the ultranationalist ministers in his government — namely Itamar Ben-Gvir and Bezalel Smotrich — than to "what the president of the United States says," Senato Van Hollen told Axios.
Despite being highly dependent on US weapons and funding to wage war on Gaza, Israeli leaders rarely take US requests into consideration. President Biden and other senior US officials are "running out" of patience with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who continues to ignore US requests regarding the ongoing war in Gaza, Axios reported on 15 January.

Crop-killing Weeds Advance Across US Farmland As Chemicals Lose Effectiveness
Crop-killing weeds such as kochia are advancing across the U.S. northern plains and Midwest, in the latest sign that weeds are developing resistance to chemicals faster than companies including Bayer (BAYGn.DE), opens new tab and Corteva (CTVA.N), opens new tab can develop new ones to fight them.
In many cases weeds are developing resistance against multiple herbicides, scientists said.
Reuters interviewed two dozen farmers, scientists, weed specialists and company executives and reviewed eight academic papers published since 2021 which described how kochia, waterhemp, giant ragweed and other weeds are squeezing out crops in North Dakota, Iowa, Wisconsin and Minnesota as chemicals lose their effectiveness.
..."We're in for big problems over the next 10 years for sure," said Ian Heap, director of the International Survey of Herbicide Resistant Weeds, a group of scientists in over 80 countries that maintains a global database. "We are in for a real shake-up."
The database records reduced effectiveness for glyphosate, one of the most common herbicides, against 361 weed species, including 180 in the U.S., affecting corn, soy, sugar beets and other crops.

The resolution called on the State Department to draft a report on whether Israel committed human rights violations in Gaza
The US Senate overwhelmingly rejected a resolution to freeze security aid to Israel on the evening of 16 January.
The resolution demanded that security aid be frozen unless the Department of State produces a report within 30 days examining whether Israel has committed human rights violations during its brutal war on Gaza.
Forced by independent senator Bernie Sanders, who caucuses with the Democratic Party, the vote settled with 72 votes against while only 11 voted for the motion.
"We must ensure that US aid is being used in accordance with human rights and our own laws," Sanders said in a speech urging support and criticizing what he described as the Senate’s failure to consider any measure looking at the war's effects on the civilian population.
“Hundreds of thousands of children in Gaza, innocent children, are starving right before our eyes. We cannot turn away. We must act,” Sanders said. “Tragically, despite the efforts of the UN and others, despite the growing humanitarian crisis we are seeing, the situation has actually gotten worse in terms of getting aid to the people in need, to these children.”
...."This resolution is not only off-base, it's dangerous. It sends absolutely the wrong signal at the wrong time," Republican Senator Lindsey Graham said.

Pakistan has conducted strikes inside Iran targeting Baluchi militants, a senior intelligence official told Reuters on Thursday, two days after Iran conducted strikes inside Pakistani territory.
There was no official confirmation of the strikes by Pakistani officials, but Iranian media said several missiles hit a village in the Sistan-Baluchistan province that borders Pakistan and that three women and 4 children, all non-Iranians, were killed.

Surveillance Overreach: Federal Investigators Asked Banks To Search Transactions Related to “MAGA,” “TRUMP”
A revelation by the House Judiciary Committee has raised concerns about federal investigators’ intrusion into individuals’ private financial transactions. According to the committee, federal investigators instructed banks to filter customer transactions using politically related terms such as “MAGA” and “TRUMP.”

A revelation by the House Judiciary Committee has raised concerns about federal investigators’ intrusion into individuals’ private financial transactions. According to the committee, federal investigators instructed banks to filter customer transactions using politically related terms such as “MAGA” and “TRUMP.”
This move, part of an investigation into the events of January 6, 2021, was exposed by the House Judiciary Committee.

US Launches Fourth Round of Strikes Against Houthis in Yemen
The US launched another round of missile strikes against the Houthis in Yemen, marking the fourth time the US has bombed the country since last Friday.
US officials told AP that the strikes were launched from US Navy warships and submarines. The attack came after the Houthis, officially known as Ansar Allah, struck a US-owned cargo ship with a drone in the Gulf of Aden.
Reports on social media said there were strikes in towns and cities across Houthi-controlled Yemen, including Hodeidah, Saada, Dhamar, and Al-Bayda. The Houthis control the Yemeni capital, Sanaa, and govern territory where 70-80% of Yemen’s population lives.
US Central Command later confirmed the strikes and claimed it targeted 14 “Houthi missiles that were loaded to be fired in Houthi-controlled areas in Yemen.”
The US strikes in Yemen have significantly escalated the situation in the region as the Houthis have expanded the scope of their targets to American commercial shipping. The Houthis have shown no sign of backing down in the face of the US military and have repeatedly stated they won’t stop attacking Israeli-linked shipping until the Israeli onslaught in Gaza ends.
President Biden has come under significant criticism from some members of Congress for not getting authorization for the strikes on Yemen, but that hasn’t stopped him from continuing to bomb the country.

Images and videos circulating on various social media platforms documenting the devastation in Gaza have made many Americans increasingly sympathetic to the plight of the Palestinians and against providing future arms to Israel.

Economic sanctions have united our adversaries in shared resistance. Less predictably[entirely predictable as I predicted it in March of 22'], the outbreak of Cold War II, has also led countries that were once partners or non-aligned to become increasingly multi-aligned.

The World Economic Forum (WEF) annual gathering of elected and unelected elites from around the world is once more under way in Switzerland’s Davos, and this year AI is unsurprisingly garnering a fair share of attention.
More precisely, how to harness its power, including through new regulation, but as one participant, DeepLearning.AI founder Andrew Ng put it, not of the tech itself, but rather of its “applications.”
Ng told the WEF that while there is amplification of warnings about problems arising from AI, calling them hypothetical, and of risk assessments that are sensationalist – what he says as the real potential issues get overlooked.
So let’s not vilify AI – but let’s still seek to control, i.e., regulate it, via “applications.” And here Ng seems to go straight for the sensationalist, only under a different pretext, mentioning rather broadly defined “systems that can emotionally manipulate people for profit” as something that would be justified to regulate.

US Re-Designates Houthis as ‘Specially Designated Global Terrorists’
The Biden administration on Wednesday announced that it was re-designating Yemen’s Houthis as “Specially Designated Global Terrorists,” a move that could complicate aid deliveries in Yemen and make peace between the Saudis and Houthis more difficult.
President Biden lifted the SDGT designation on the Houthis in February 2021 as well as a “Foreign Terrorist Organization” designation, which was implemented by the Trump administration. Both designations come with economic sanctions, but the FTO is considered more harsh and would essentially criminalize delivering aid to Houthi-controlled Yemen, where 70-80% of Yemenis live.
However, sanctions under the SDGT designation could also hamper aid deliveries. The State Department said the administration would issue exemptions for “certain transactions related to the provision of food, medicine, and fuel, as well as personal remittances, telecommunications and mail, and port and airport operations.”
But even with exemptions, history has shown that sanctions scare away international companies and banks from doing business with the targeted nations or entities and cause shortages of medicine, food, and other basic goods.

Both designations come with economic sanctions, but the FTO is considered more harsh and would essentially criminalize delivering aid to Houthi-controlled Yemen, where 70-80% of Yemenis live.
However, sanctions under the SDGT designation could also hamper aid deliveries. The State Department said the administration would issue exemptions for “certain transactions related to the provision of food, medicine, and fuel, as well as personal remittances, telecommunications and mail, and port and airport operations.”
But even with exemptions, history has shown that sanctions scare away international companies and banks from doing business with the targeted nations or entities and cause shortages of medicine, food, and other basic goods.

A scathing Justice Department report into the 2022 mass shooting at an elementary school in Uvalde, Texas, described "cascading failures of leadership" during the attack and an "unprecedented" level of misinformation in its aftermath that crippled the community's attempts to recover.
A review team empowered by the department to investigate the shooting "identified several critical failures and other breakdowns prior to, during, and after the Robb Elementary School response," the report released Thursday morning found.

NATO is launching its largest exercise since the Cold War, rehearsing how U.S. troops could reinforce European allies in countries bordering Russia and on the alliance's eastern flank if a conflict were to flare up with a "near-peer" adversary.
The exercise, composed of a series of smaller individual drills, will span from North America to NATO's eastern flank, close to the Russian border. It will involve 50 naval vessels, 80 aircraft and over 1,100 combat vehicles.
Aimed at showing the capabilities of the alliance to defend all of its territory up to its border with Russia, NATO announced to launch its biggest military exercises in decades next week with around 90,000 personnel set to take part in months-long wargames.
The exercise, composed of a series of smaller individual drills, will span from North America to NATO’s eastern flank, close to the Russian border. It will involve 50 naval vessels, 80 aircraft and over 1,100 combat vehicles.
The exercise — the biggest since the 1988 Reforger drill during the Cold War — comes as NATO overhauls its defences in the face of Russia’s war on Ukraine.
