UK Government Considers Loosening Definition of “Extremism” in a New Threat to Free Speech
UK government plans have recently come to light, suggesting a potentially contentious move to broaden the scope of the term “extremism” to include any entity that “undermines” the values and institutions.
These revelations, sourced from documents seen by The Observer, have led to considerable backlash from officials fearful of the implications it may have on legitimate groups and individuals, and the suppressive impact it could have on the principles of free speech and expression.
Spearheaded by cabinet minister Michael Gove, the proposed definition is seen as part of a heightened effort to unify the country’s response to extremism. However, many understand it as an encroachment on the freedom of speech and a potential threat to the right to dissent, marking it as a contentious development. The proposed definition might frame not only the violent extremists but also non-violent entities, which could fundamentally reshape the landscape of free expression and political discourse.

General Wesley Clark (2007) explaining the US takeover of the Middle East after 9/11.
Six years later Luke questions him about that speech. Notice how vague he is and then runs off. He was being more careful about his words this time. Sounds like someone got a visit! 👀
They plan the wars AND the terrorist attacks. Without the attacks the public would never support the war, which typically ends up being more like a genocide with a western military superpower carpet bombing an Arab country with no army, just villagers in flip flops using makeshift weapons.
“The truth is there is no islamic army or terrorist group called al-qaeda, and any informed intelligence officer knows this. But, there is a propaganda campaign to make the public beleive in the presence of an identified entity representing the ‘devil’ in order to drive TV watchers to accept a unified international leadership for a war against terrorism. The country behind this propaganda is the USA” - Former British Foreign Secretary Robin Cook.

July Flashback: ‘Israel’ Militarizes AI in the West Bank, Gaza, Syria: Bloomberg
"Israel" is adding to its long list of unethical military practices by integrating unregulated AI technology in its aggression on occupied Palestinian territories and Syria, as highlighted by a Bloomberg report.
According to the media company, Israeli occupation forces, specifically the Air Force, have employed a data-crunching artificial intelligence program that selects targets for air strikes and organizes wartime logistics in their attacks on various regions.
"Israel" then employs another AI model dubbed "Fire Factory" to analyze the collected data to determine munition loads, prioritize and assign thousands of targets to aircraft and attack drones, and propose a schedule to carry out the attack in a matter of minutes.

Mounting Evidence Suggests Israel May Be Ready to ‘Cleanse’ Gaza
All the signs are in place that Israel is once again seriously considering a massive ethnic cleansing operation, conducted at lightning speed and with US assistance
As Israeli forces began making limited ground incursions into northern Gaza over the weekend, reports proliferated that Israel was readying plans to expel much or all of the enclave’s population into the neighboring Egyptian territory of Sinai.
In part, those fears were fueled by a report last week, published in the Israeli outlet Calcalist, of a leaked policy draft from the intelligence ministry outlining just such an ethnic cleansing plan for Gaza.
Further concerns were raised by a report in the Financial Times on Monday that Israel’s prime minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, had lobbied the European Union on the idea of driving the strip’s Palestinians into Sinai under cover of war.
Some EU members, including the Czech Republic and Austria, were said to have been receptive and floated the idea at a meeting of member states last week. An unnamed European diplomat told the FT: “Now is the time to put increased pressure on the Egyptians to agree.”
According to the leaked Israeli intelligence ministry document, after their expulsion, Gaza’s 2.3 million Palestinians would initially be housed in tent cities, before permanent communities could be built in the peninsula’s north.

Dick Durbin Becomes First US Senator to Call for Gaza Ceasefire
The Biden administration has refused to call for a ceasefire, only a "pause" to get hostages out
Twenty-seven days into Israel’s brutal bombing campaign, Sen. Dick Durbin (D-IL) became the first member of the US Senate to call for a ceasefire in Gaza.
Asked in an interview on CNN whether it’s time to call for a ceasefire, Durbin replied, “I think it is.”
“At least in the context of both sides agreeing. For example, the release of those kidnapped should be part of this — immediate release. That should be the beginning of it,” he said. “An effort should be made to engage in conversation between the Israelis and Palestinians.”
Durbin is the Senate majority whip, making him the second-highest-ranking Democrat in the chamber. His call for a ceasefire breaks from the Biden administration, which has only called for a vague “pause.”

The Supreme Court Will Hear First Amendment Case Alleging That New York Pressured Companies To End Business With the NRA
The Supreme Court has agreed to hear the case brought forward by the National Rifle Association (NRA), claiming that the New York government used coercion to pressure companies into severing ties with, and debanking, the NRA.
The allegation raises questions about government overreach and brings crucial aspects of free speech and censorship into the spotlight. Notably, the case, named NRA v. Vullo, has all of the common themes of assumed government intimidation aimed at stifling speech.
A central argument in the NRA’s case is that Maria Vullo, the Chief of New York’s Department of Financial Services (DFS), used tactics akin to those in Bantam Books v. Sullivan to intimidate banks and insurance firms into discontinuing their association with the NRA. These allegedly include backchannel threats, veiled guidance communications, and biased enforcement of regulatory violations.
The NRA contends that the reasons behind this are rooted in their advocacy of Second Amendment rights, discouraging financial institutions from doing business with them, and citing a reputation risk.
Given this, the crucial question that hinges on the First Amendment being considered by the court is: Can a government regulator threaten entities with adverse regulatory action, either because of the government’s antipathy towards the speaker’s viewpoint or a perceived backlash against the speaker’s advocacy?

‘Shut up and Fall In Line’: Israel, Palestine and the Dawn of a New Censorship in Western Art
Arab artists, writers and filmmakers sought freedom of expression in the West but the latest conflict in Gaza shows they must contend with familiar repression
...All the progress we made in film and culture have proven to be futile and illusionary. The dominant politics of diversity have transpired to be nothing but a phony marketing tool for business leaders eager to attract wider demographics.
The deliberate silencing of pro-Palestinian voices - Arab, western, and Jewish - in Europe and the US has woken us to a crude reality none of us, including this writer, had the courage to acknowledge.
Anti-Palestinian censorship
Over the past three weeks, various pro-Palestinian artists and writers had their engagements cancelled in Europe and the US.
Most prominently, the scheduled public discussion and award ceremony for Adania Shibli at the Frankfurt Book Fair was cancelled, as Juergen Boos, director of the fair, released a statement declaring that his organisation “stands with complete solidarity on the side of Israel”.
In Berlin, the leftist Maxim Gorki theatre scrapped a showing of Berlin-based Israeli playmaker Yael Ronen’s The Situation, attesting that “war is a great simplifier” and adding: "The terrorist attack of Hamas puts us on Israel’s side.”

Kenya Concedes ‘Millions of Hectares’ to Uae Firm in Latest Carbon Offset Deal
Blue Carbon signs series of deals with African countries for carbon offset projects covering a total area of 24.5 million hectares
Dubai-based firm Blue Carbon has signed a framework of collaboration (FOC) with Kenya's State Department of Environment and Climate Change that would concede "millions of hectares" of its territory for the production of carbon credits.
The credits would be generated supposedly from restoring and protecting the land, and the company would then sell these on to major polluters to offset their emissions.
This follows a slew of similar contracts with Liberia, Tanzania, Zambia and Zimbabwe, which conceded 7.5 million hectares, a fifth of its landmass, to the company.
Cumulatively, the deals concede near blanket control over a total area of 24.5 million hectares, violating customary land rights of local communities.
The FOC with Kenya closely follows a $1.5bn memorandum of understanding signed by Blue Carbon's parent company, Global Carbon Investments, with Harare, which a press release states is "pre-financing for carbon credits in Zimbabwe".

On 17 October 2023, Arthur Firstenberg published a concerning article on his Substack, drawing attention to reports of “catastrophic declines” around the world, mainly of bird populations, but also of other animals such as marine mammals and insects.
Firstenberg’s article references huge declines in bird populations on five continents, in places as widespread as Norway, the Netherlands, France, Greece, Romania, Tibet, Britain, North America, Chile, and Peru.
The numbers are simply tragic, with most reports listing tens of thousands of birds dying within relatively short periods. But it’s not just the numbers; it’s the proportions of total populations that these numbers represent: 13% of Chile’s Humboldt penguins; 30% of Norway’s endangered kittiwakes; 36% of Peruvian pelicans; and 40% of Dalmatian pelicans nesting in Greece, to mention a few.
What’s the culprit? It's time we start paying attention.

TikTok CEO To Meet Pro-Censorship EU Officials This Week
The CEO of the popular video-sharing app TikTok, Shou Zi Chew, is slated to meet with top-ranking industrial regulators at the European Union this week. The reason for the rendezvous stems from allegations of “disinformation” being spread on the app during the recent Israel-Hamas conflict. This forthcoming meeting in Brussels marks the second visit for the TikTok head, signaling an escalating regulatory microscope on TikTok’s role in the diffusion of alleged misinformation.
Shou Zi Chew is expected to meet with pro-censorship EU industry chief Thierry Breton, equally pro-censorship EU digital chief Věra Jourová, and EU antitrust chief Didier Reynders to discuss these matters in detail. He will be specifically updating the commissioners about “Project Clover,” an initiative by TikTok to enhance data security, which had started storing European user data locally this year. Towards this end, the company has set up its data center in Dublin, Ireland, and is in the process of constructing two more in Ireland and Norway.
The issue of content controls is another prioritized agenda for the meeting, especially in light of the European Union’s new online content rules, known as the Digital Services Act.

Ukraine Says Defence Officials Suspects in Fraud Scandal
Ukrainian prosecutors announced Monday they had formally notified two senior defence officials that they are suspects in a large-scale fraud case involving the purchase of military uniforms from a Turkish firm.
Ukraine has been fighting an uphill battle against systemic corruption as part of reforms urged by the West for membership to institutions like the European Union.
Prosecutors said they had informed a former deputy defence minister and his subordinate that they were being investigated for the "embezzlement of state funds and obstruction of the lawful activities of the Armed Forces of Ukraine".
The nearly $28-million-case centres around the procurement of winter uniforms from a Turkish company, which Ukrainian journalists have linked to a member of President Volodymyr Zelensky's party.
