Israel has granted final approval for the long-delayed E1 settlement project in the occupied West Bank, a move rights groups warn will bisect the territory and make a future Palestinian state impossible.
The plan, which includes around 3,500 housing units to expand Maale Adumim, cleared its last legal hurdle on 6 August and was formally approved by Israel’s Planning and Building Committee on Wednesday. Infrastructure could begin within months, with construction starting in about a year.
Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich, a former settler leader, hailed the project as a direct response to western governments recognizing Palestine, declaring: “This reality finally buries the idea of a Palestinian state.”
The E1 zone is the final land corridor linking Ramallah and Bethlehem, and its development would sever the northern and southern West Bank. Peace Now called the move “deadly for the future of Israel and for any chance of achieving a peaceful two-state solution,” warning it guarantees more bloodshed.

“Shaibani met today in the French capital, Paris, with an Israeli delegation to discuss several issues related to ‘enhancing stability’ in the region and southern Syria. Iraq has reached an agreement in principle with US oil giant Chevron for the Nasiriya project, which includes four exploration blocks as well as the development of additional producing oil fields, Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammad Shia al-Sudani announced on Tuesday.
“We are confident that Chevron, with its proven track record and expertise in successfully developing oil and gas projects, has the resources, experience, and technology to support Iraq to further develop new energy resources,” Chevron’s vice president of corporate business development, Frank Mount, said in a statement.

The Indian external affairs minister is in Moscow for three days of talks focusing on economic cooperation
India and Russia plan to increase their annual trade to $100 billion over the next five years – an increase of 50 percent – despite US opposition to the growing cooperation between New Delhi and Moscow, a top Indian minister announced on 21 August.
During the first day of a three-day visit to Moscow on Wednesday, Indian External Affairs Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar emphasized the need for India and Russia to broaden their trade ties, foster additional joint ventures between their companies, and hold more frequent meetings to resolve issues such as payment systems.
Russia ranks as India’s fourth-largest trade partner, while India holds the position of Russia’s second-largest.
“We are all acutely aware that we are meeting in the backdrop of a complex geopolitical situation. Our leaders remain closely and regularly engaged,” he said while speaking at the India–Russia Business Forum in the Russian capital.
Jaishankar added that rising global uncertainty puts the emphasis back on “dependable and steady partners.”

Inmate Who Criticized Ghislaine Maxwell Punished With Move to Higher-Security Prison
A former inmate at Ghislaine Maxwell’s cushy prison camp says she was recently booted to a high-security prison—hours after an article came out in which she spoke out against Jeffrey Epstein’s co-conspirator.
According to a report from the Daily Mail, 44-year-old Julie Howell gave an interview to a British newspaper in which she said that she was “disgusted” by Maxwell’s transfer to the Federal Prison Camp in Bryan, Texas.
Hours after the story ran on August 4, prison warden Tanisha Hall called Howell into her office and told her she was being transferred to the high-security Federal Detention Center in Houston.
“Julie has been punished for crossing the system and speaking her mind openly,” attorney Patrick McLain told the Daily Mail. “President Trump has talked about wanting to punish and put in jail his political opponents. ... By speaking her mind, [Howell] has angered this administration and has suffered the consequences.”
In the article published by The Telegraph, Howell said that “every inmate I’ve heard from is upset she’s here” and that “this facility is supposed to house non-violent offenders.”
Howell is serving a one-year sentence for theft after she admitted to stealing from her former employer.
She was sentenced in June and had served just a few weeks at the Bryan camp—which has been referred to as a “Real Housewives prison” for its lax rules and cozy accommodations—before she found herself in the warden’s crosshairs for her comments about Maxwell.
...On Friday, the government released transcripts and audio recordings from the Blanche-Maxwell interviews, in which she said that she “never witnessed the president in any inappropriate setting.”
“Trump was always very cordial and very kind to me,” Maxwell said. “And I just want to say that I admire his extraordinary achievement in becoming the president now.”..
Trump has not ruled out pardoning Maxwell.

The Ukrainian suspected of coordinating attacks on the Nord Stream pipelines had served in Ukraine's Secret Service and in the Ukrainian Army's special forces, Sky News understand.
Serhii K., 49, was arrested in northern Italy on Thursday following the issuance of a European arrest warrant by German prosecutors.
It is not known whether he was still serving at the time of the pipeline attack in 2022 and Ukraine's government has always denied any involvement in the explosions.
According to sources close to the case, the suspect has been found in a three-star bungalow hotel named La Pescaccia in San Clemente, in the province of Rimini.
...In Germany, he will face charges of collusion to cause an explosion, anti-constitutional sabotage and the destruction of structures.
German prosecutors believe he was part of a group of people who planted devices on the pipelines near the Danish island of Bornholm in September 2022.
Serhii and his accomplices are believed to have set off from Rostock on Germany's north-eastern coast in a sailing yacht to carry out the attack.
